Ike & Tina's Kent/Modern recordings.......2007-06-21

Amongst the many labels that Ike Turner licensed his records to during his unbelievably busy mid-sixties period (managing and touring the Revue, playing guitar and piano, constantly writing and recording) after he left the Sue label, were the Bihari Brothers' Kent and Modern labels, and it is the bulk of these these that are collected here. Ike Turner had an association with the Biharis that dates back to at least 1951, when he played piano on the Howlin' Wolf's first single, Morning At Midnight.

During the period between 1964 and 1966 six singles appeared on Kent and Modern with varying degrees of commercial success (only two charted): I Can't Believe What You Say, Am I A Fool In Love, Goodbye So Long, Gonna Have Fun, Chicken Shack and, finally, Flee Flee Fla. The frenetic I Can't Believe What You Say (For Seeing What You Do) went on to become a club classic and the song has since been covered by Manfred Mann and Toots and the Maytals, among others. Seven of these twelve sides were collected on a Kent label LP in late 1966 along with five other tracks. The LP was titled The Soul Of Ike And Tina Turner (as an earlier Sue label album had been), and was later reissued on United Artists with a slightly amended track list. The Kent Years includes this LP almost in full (If I Can't Be The First is left off) and adds three of the other single tracks (omitted are Am I A Fool In Love? and its James Brown cover flip, Please, Please, Please).

Of the other eleven tracks, none were released at the time. Some appeared in 1987 on an album called The Ike And Tina Turner Sessions, the rest are previously unissued; probably stockpiled and gradually forgotten. A couple of these appear to be studio workouts in rehearsal for the live Revue, because the old Eddie Boyd blues Five Long Years begins with a spoken introduction from Tina, as if on stage, and their version of Etta James' All I Could Do Was Cry contains the lengthy monologue about Tina watching her man marry someone else, just as when performed live.

Virtually all tracks feature the wonderful Ikettes, horns are liberally sprinkled and Ike's distinctive guitar and piano are prominent. He also adds a few vocal moments on the ultra-fast Goodbye, So Long and on Something Came Over Me, a sort of sequel to their most famous hit, A Fool In Love, which it references musically throughout just as Hard Times harks back to It's Gonna Work Out Fine. From The Ike And Tina Turner Sessions, Makin' Plans Together has some rare soulful strings but suffers unfortunately from some wonky edits half-way through - a singular blemish on an otherwise well-presented round-up.

Tina Turner's vocal style at this time was a world away from that with which she dominated the world in the eighties and nineties, but was aimed at a wholly different audience with whom she was highly successful, and it is excellent news that the confusing clutter of releases from this era are gradually being made sense of and becoming available on compilations such as this one.

that you usually never hear when someone plays Ike and Tina. A lot of fast moving, up tempo tunes from two of the "hardest working people in show business" No way you won't like this CD.

I agree with the previous writer that Ike and Tina albums have been treated bad by the record companies. We have been getting compilations by the tons, but almost none of their original albums have been available on CD. Collectables records did release the early albums of their Sue records period on CD. This compilation is a perfect showcase of Ike and Tina in the sixties. It is a must for any Ike and Tina collection. Now let's hope that EMI finally will release their seventies albums with original covers. There are some signs...Delilah's Power and Working Together have been released in Europe this summer...Now all the others please!!!!

Finally - a missing link!.......2000-07-08

As a big fan of Ike & Tina Turner music,I had always find very annoying the fact that their albums are all over the market butchered up and cut up in pieces,in so called "compilations" without any sence or chronological order.Besides,whatever happend to their early period between first hit "A Fool In Love"(1960) and Phil Spector's ""River Deep,Mountain High"(1966) fiasco?These were years in wilderness,when Ike & Tina Turner Revue worked hard without hits,and FINALLY this wonderful "Kent" compilation traces the missing link.I find very intriguing the way Ike's simply melodies remind on his own early hits (covering himself!),and Tina's vocals were just stunning,althought songs were far from being sutied to her.Its clear that Ike didnt really care much for the recorded material,pushing his simple R&B novelties and earning money on the nightly tours instead."Making Plans Together" was a clear way to get a "Drifters" kind of song,very unusual for a Turner's style!They moved from Spector's "Wall of sound" ("River Deep,Mountain High"1966.) via blues ("Bold Soul Sister"1968.) to rock ("Come Together"1970.,"Working Togeher"1971.,"Nutbush city Limits"1973.) even recording a gospel album ("Gospel According To Ike & Tina"1974.) but this was a important period before they hit big time with white audience.Now,if anyone can trace their work for Ray Charles "Tangerine" label...

A Mixed Bag From Aretha's Little Sister.......2006-09-11

This really is a decent collection of soul material from Aretha's little sister. She has a great voice but the material is weak. Some songs are spot on top notch soul but it really only boils down to about 5 or 6 tracks. That means there's quite a number of tracks that are lacking and a number that sound fairly dated (particullarly the song about Muhammad Ali). If your looking for a lost soul gemm this isn't it. I'm not saying to turn away from this album either because their are some cool songs, just beaware.

The Lovelites were one of the best but most underexposed and underappreciated R&B girl groups of Soul's golden era. This compilation reissues most of the group's best songs and is a worthwhile addition to your collection of R&B CDs. This Chicago-based group's recordings were as good as those of The Supremes, Martha & The Vandellas, The Marvelettes, The Ronettes, The Shirelles and other world-famous girl groups...and this CD's release finally anthologizes their best tracks.
