Album Description

"Ike Turner can still get it up, definitely." - Rolling Stone

"There's no doubt that Ike Turner is a musical treasure … [this is] ample evidence of his deserved place in the pantheon of popular American music." - Pop Matters

"On Risin' with the Blues, the R&B icon and Rock & Roll Hall of Famer takes the intensity level up with typically slashing-stinging guitar work, rollicking boogie-woogie piano flourishes, and some of the nastiest, rawest, most potent vocals he's ever summoned up in a fabled career that dates back more than fifty years." - Bill Milkowski

Ike's back! Risin' with the Blues is the first new CD by R&B icon Ike Turner since his critically acclaimed, Grammy-nominated Here and Now in 2001. Turner again fronts his legendary Kings of Rhythm band in a mix of new originals, a few re-worked Ike & Tina Turner hits from the sixties, and some blues classics, all in brand-new arrangements.

I've never heard anything so inconsistant in a long time, it's all a mismatch and just does not appeal to me at all.

4 out of 5 stars Menacing.......2007-07-03

With the whole wide world against him,its really wonder Ike Turner is still recording. Not only recording, man kicks with such unexpected fire, passion and snarl that its impossible not to rock along with his music. What was just a curiosity to hear his new album, immediately turned to awe and joy - forget everything else you read or heard and if you can listen with ears open, this album is a BLAST!Althought he started in stone age of rock, there is nothing old fashioned here - production is modern, sound crisp and music excellent.Best of all,Turner (who has never been much of a singer before) somehow turns his big-bad-wolf-with-scars persona into surprisingly expressive voice,he sounds completely believable on each single song and knowing his earlier work,Im glad to hear that particular bluesy sound still alive and so full of life."Caldonia" ia of course tribute to his idol Louis Jordan (Turner paid his hospital bills when he found jordan was down on luck),"Going home tomorrow" a nod to Fats Domino and "Big Fat mama" reminder that blues and country are very much two faces of same coin (as his early recordings show,Turner could play country with the best of them)."A love like yours" is of course old Phil Spector chesnutt and and surprisingly soft spot for Turner who recordeds and performs it often, but there is also "Jesus loves me" where he bleeds and dares to point at his critics:"Point your fingers at me,you should take a look at yourself".Its clearly one of my favourite new albums and every musician I talked to loves it.How strange that he would prove to be more vital and interesting than his superstar ex-wife who for the past 20 years lives basically on charisma, but her music is not as half as fun as this!

4 out of 5 stars BACK TO THE ROCKET 88.......2007-06-27

Yes, Ike Turner was hell on Tina. Yes, he is probably not a guy you want to have a drink with. But, hell you sure can listen to his blues (and earlier with Tina, rhythm and blues) work here. I knew all of Ike and Turner's work at one time back in the days. I saw Ike resurface on Martin Scorseses' blues series on PBS and got interested again after hearing his hot riff of the classic Rocket 88. Here he seems to have captured some of that same energy reworking some of the classics (including his own). Okay, maybe you have to hold your nose about his personal life but lend an ear to this.

5 out of 5 stars Get up and LISTEN! .......2007-01-11

This is one of best blues albums I've heard in years. Ike Turner is a true legend, genius and innovator.
I was fortunate to see him live in 2001 at Burnaby Blues Festival in Canada where he was promoting his 2001 release "Here and Now". I must admit that when you see Ike Turner live you know that you are in the presence of one of a kind. His stage presence and intensity is just as remarkable as his guitar and piano skills.

The new album is a MUST own (just as much as "Here and Now"). The sample tracks on Amazon can give you some idea but definitely don't do justice to a full sound and heavy base on this album. When you realize that at 75 Ike was able to produce such high quality product, you wish him another 200 years of music career.

Enjoy it!

2 out of 5 stars The Ike & Tina Turner Review, 1960-1975.......2007-02-02

Finding a good Ike & Tina compilation is no easy task. Not only did they record for multiple record labels, there are a plethora of low-budget and low-quality compilations available. This is one of the decent ones.

PROUD MARY: THE BEST OF IKE & TINA TURNER (from the "Legends of Rock n' Roll Series") consists of 23 songs recorded 1960-1975, in chronological order. Also included are two uncredited ("bonus") tracks; they are two commercials/radio ads for Ike & Tina. Disc packaged in black jewel case; total running time: 73:07. Booklet (in the form of a 6-pannel map-style fold-out sheet) includes a substantial small-font essay by Al Quaaglieri, one b&w photo of Ike & Tina, a photo of an assortment of original Ike & Tina album covers, and track information (including release dates and chart positions). Sound quality ranges from poor (on earlier recordings) to good; volume is low on all tracks.

This compilation seems to cover, with the exception of their Blue Thumb recordings, most of their career. Ike & Tina's labels included Sue, Modern/Kent, Warner Bros./Loma, Minit, Atlantic/Pompeii, Liberty, and United Artists. I do wish it included "Shake a Tail Feather".

The vocals of this Tina Turner are closer to that of LaVern Baker, Etta James, Lyn Collins, or Janis Joplin than to the pop/rock singer she would later become. She shouts and screams, often singing in a strained, almost forced-sounding, voice.

Notes: The version of "River Deep, Mountain High" is not the Phil Spector version; the version included is from the "Nutbush City Limits" LP. The voice heard on "It's Gonna Work Out Fine" and addressed as "Ikey" is not Ike Turner; it is Mickey of studio team Mickey & Sylvia. Ike's voice is heard on "Baby-Get It On", where he sings co-lead vocals. It is also interesting that the essayist mentions several times that the Ike & Tina story "would make a great movie" - this was a couple years before the 1993 bio-pic "What's Love Got to Do With It" was released.

1 out of 5 stars What a mess.......2007-01-25

First the sound quality is poor - I had my stereo turned almost up to max and it was just loud enuf to hear.

Then there are the uncredited/unlisted "bonus tracks" - they are comercials/radio ads for Ike & Tina.

The version of "River Deep, Mountain High" is not the Phil Spector version.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......2005-08-26

This is a really good album. Anybody that hasn't heard this should listen to it.

This is some great music from a golden era. Funky and Nice!

5 out of 5 stars Phil Spector Brings The Best Out Of Ike and Tina.......2002-07-12

I'll be honest. The only reason I like this album is because of Phil Spector's contributions. I happen to think that Tina Turner is somewhat overrated, and I'll also point out that, "River Deep," is the only appearance she makes in my most impressive music collection. This album is Phil Spector's moment of glory. The Wall Of Sound he creates on here sounds as if it's about to explode through the headphones. He went for it all on this one, and although it was a bomb in the US commercially, it stands as one of the most successful pieces of pop art to come out of the 60s (and that's sayin' a lot).

5 out of 5 stars Some unique tracks... not all Spector........2001-12-18

Other reviews will tell you how excellent this album is. I just want everyone to realise that the tracks were produced by Ike Turner, EXCEPT 1, 3, 6, 8 and 10 (produced by Phil Spector). 'Hold On Baby' is a good bit of Turner-Spector frenzy, and has only ever been issued on this album.

5 out of 5 stars Ike & Tina and Spector stereo classic.......2001-11-20

This album is one of the most influential albums of all time and is a highlight of Phil Spector's career. A few of these songs: I Idolize You, A Fool In Love and It's Gonna Work Out Fine were hits when they were signed to the Sue label and the original versions are on the "Proud Mary: The Best of Ike & Tina Turner" compilation on EMI which is THE essential compilation of their hits spanning their entire career but with nothing from this album although that compilation does have an inferior remake of the title song from this album. The title track of course is the most essential track of the album but the rest of the album is as well produced as this album. I actually have another CD pressing of this album that features this album in stereo plus "Sonny Charles & The Checkmates, Ltd.'s "Love Is All We Have To Give" on CD in stereo, featuring "Black Pearl" as a Spanish import The Sonny Charles album is not available on CD otherwise. As mentioned in another review, all songs from this album that are on the Back To Mono boxed set are in mono, the stereo versions are great while I'll add that another mono copy of the title song is on Tina's "Simply The Best" compilation from 1989 on Capitol with her 1980's comeback hits.

4 out of 5 stars her best art creation so far.......2001-11-20

the first track is awsome. but there r other songs on the album, of very good quality. I'm thinking about "Save the last dance for me", especially, but also about "A love like urs"
Save the last dance it's full of emotion, of passion, of feelings. All this comes through due to Tina's ***** vocals.
I think this whole album is her best art creation so far.
If the title track is indeed most crafted song, possibly the best on the album, i'd like to stress "save the last dance" too, because it's a true song, it expresses pure feeling, nothing from the overwhelmed intensity of the heart is missed, everything is recreated with an almost perfect mastery.
listening to it one senses the hardwork, but it's all the more impressive, because it's trying to reach for the truth and get it out.
river deep mountain high is beyond fashion, while save the last dance for me is under its influence. but it's in a way reflected back, it's used to create the whole, and that's y i consider it one of tina's masterpieces.
maybe someone should re-release it. it has still a lot to say

5 out of 5 stars The roughest, hardest, rarest and best of Ike and Tina!.......2004-01-28

This stuff is the perfect compliment to any best of Ike and Tina album. There are no other albums, apart from the album 'Working Together' that are currently available, that give you such a good impression of Ike and Tina.

What we have on here is the wild and funky hard soul stuff, albeit with a touch of psychedelic funk-rock. For me this is what I had hoped that they had recorded. Most tracks I'd heard by them sounded a bit dull, or uninspired compared to Bold Soul Sister and a handful of the tracks on the best ofs.

These tracks sound pretty rough, even for the time, and would dfinitely benefit from remastering, to bring out the brightness of the drums and tighten the bass. But then again that garage band sound is part of the charm. I mean, Tinas voice is at least as rough as the recordings!

Best track on here is, for me, The Game Of Love. I wish that heavy soul sound had been pursued a bit more. Theres shades of Ann Peebles or Ann Sexton on it.

Quite a bit of over eager 'fozzie bear' style guitar (Wacka Wacka!) but Ike's playing is great, punctuated with some firey R and B/Blues style licks.

All in all, my favourite recordings by the band and in some ways the most cohesive re-release yet by Ike and Tina.

Dont be put off by the fact that Tina's 80's to recent output is so sterile, or the fact that Tina is so famous. This is the absolute antithesis of that sound. If you want hard soul, raw funk and rocking tunes then this is where to start!

5 out of 5 stars The Best of the Forgotten Classics.......2002-10-23

This compilation has been a long time coming. Many of these Ike and Tina Turner songs have never seen the light of day on CD. It's about time. Gems like "The Chopper", "Up on the Roof" and "Doin It" should not be relegated to sitting in the bins of used LP stores. These songs deserve to be heard. Ike and Tina Turner have created a number of classic records and these songs sit comfortably among their best.

The disc opens with the ever funky "Funkier Than a Mosquitas Tweeter" which was penned by Tina's sister Alline. Was she talking about Ike? :) Tina's wildly uplifting reading of the track blows Nina Simone's bastardized rendition out of the water. The disc continues on with funk and soul drenched songs such as "What You Don't See" and "Baby, What You Want Me To Do" which would make Sly Stone proud. Soul, always a component of every Turner record turns up more predominately on cuts such as "Game of Love", "Up On the Roof (from the 'Let Me Touch Your Mind' LP) and "Whole Lotta Love" which was an R&B hit for Tina alone in 1975. And though many think Ike to be the sole svengali and mastermind behind the revue, Tina also made her writing attempts. You would be remiss to neglect to mention "Nutbush City Limits" (not on the disc), but she had other fine moments. "The Chopper" sits right alongside 'Nutbush' and other Tina tunes such as 'Sexy Ida' and 'Help Him'. The showstopper of this disc, however, is the addition of a sexy, soulful song from the Turner's 1969 LP 'Come Together' entitled, "Doin' It". Tina's raunchiness is restrained, but her sexual energy explodes over the track as Ike and company pander to her every desire to "change the groove". This is Aaliyah's "Rock the Boat" 32 years earlier.

In all, this disc has been over 26 years in the making. It's a pleasure to know that these classics are now available to hear without the cracks, pops and hisses of vinyl. The original 'Bold Soul Sister' and her erstwhile husband were indeed as funky as the title of this album suggests.

    Album Description

Ike Quebec's 1961-1962 comeback albums for Blue Note were all pretty rewarding, but Blue and Sentimental is his signature statement of the bunch, a superbly sensuous blend of lusty blues swagger and achingly romantic ballads. True, there's no shortage of that on Quebec's other Blue Note albums, but Blue and Sentimental is the best one by far. Quebec was a master of mood and atmosphere, and the well-paced program here sustains his smoky, late-night magic with the greatest consistency of tone. Part of the reason is that Quebec's caressing tenor sound is given a sparer backing than usual, with no pianist among the quartet of guitarist Grant Green, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer Philly Joe Jones. It's no surprise that Green solos with tremendous taste and elegance (the two also teamed up on Green's similarly excellent Born to Be Blue), and there are plenty of open spaces in the ensemble for Quebec to shine through. His rendition of the Count Basie-associated title cut is a classic, and the other standard on the original LP, "Don't Take Your Love From Me," is in a similarly melancholy vein. Through it all, Quebec remains the quintessential seducer, striking just the right balance between sophistication and earthiness, confidence and vulnerability, joy and longing. It's enough to make Blue and Sentimental a quiet, sorely underrated masterpiece.

    Personnel includes:
Ike Quebec - Piano, Sax (Tenor)
    Grant Green - Guitar
    Paul Chambers - Bass
    "Philly" Joe Jones - Drums

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Sound of Relaxed Romance .......2007-07-30

All of Ike Quebec's bluenote albums are superior efforts, but "Blue and Sentimental" , along with "Easy Living" (which came after this one and before "Soul Samba") take the proverbial cake. Quebec mesmerizes with the languid-smokey-late-night-romance that he breathes deeply into his tenor saxophone. Without the accompaniment of the piano there is more space and time for Ike to move about in at his lazy leisure, and in place of it is the gentle strumming of Grant Green, who is at his most relaxed with Quebec at the helm. This fits the mood just right, and Ike Quebec is nothing if not a master at sustaining the blue tinted mood of a seemingly endless night. Images of laying in a bed with no sheets, late on a humid night, a gentle rain smearing the windows and the black streets below, a woman asleep with her head buried in your shoulder and her body pressed against you swaying with her breath, blue wisps of smoke from a cigarette lingering in the thick still air. This music is the sound of relaxed-romance, romance after passion but before sleep. A strange mingling of melancholy and quiet satisfaction. This is an album that is totally complete in and of itself, perfectly capturing a frozen moment. A still, perfect, and beautiful moment. This is Ike Quebec at the summit, and so this is jazz at the summit.

    5 out of 5 stars Breathtaking album.......2006-05-11

This album is simply beatifull. Iqe Quebec's (tenor) tone is irremarkable. Iqe and Grant Green (guitar) colaborate so smoothly on this album, and the rytham section of Philly Joe Jones (drums) and Paul Chambers (bass) is just right for this session. The album's title does kind of say it all and I must warn you fast paced music lovers, this album is slow, blue, and sentimental. So if speed is what you need you ain't gonna get it here. The first three tracks are simply the law, they make this album what it is. Don't get me wrong the whole album is terrific, but the first three tracks set the pace for the rest of the album. Track 8 was recorded a week after the rest of the album and there are different musicians present. Quebec and Green are the same, but Sonny Clark plays piano, Sam Jones plays bass, and Louis Hayes plays drums. A great album to listen to first thing in the morning, or last thing after a good night of roaming the streets. Play it loud!!!

5 out of 5 stars blue and sentimental.......2004-10-09

the title song says it all. this CD is great jazz and anyone can enjoy it from the conneseour to the casual jazz fan. ike quebec never got his due, but he knows how to blow.

4 out of 5 stars Tremendous music, but..........2001-04-22

The music here is as affecting as suggested by the other reviewers, but the sound quality, specifically the digital transfer, is poor, in my opinion to the point of being unlistenable. The highs are very harsh and metallic, and Ike Quebec's mellifluous tone is not done justice. There were a number of blue note transfers in the mid eighties that suffered in this regard: many of these are thankfully available remastered in the RVG edition, as is this, albeit as a Japanese import.

The language of the blues is available to everyone, and probably more to the guy who helped invent rock & roll with 1951's "Rocket 88" than to most people--though Tina's ex-husband might have thought twice before including quite so many lyrics on his comeback album about how women keep leaving him and he doesn't understand why. Even so, the whammy bar on Turner's Stratocaster has lost none of its sting. He bangs on the piano like a man a quarter his age, too, and when he manages to dodge the curse of modern electro-percussion, Here and Now has the drive and verve of the records he made half a century ago. Turner even reaches back for remakes of "Rocket 88" and a few other jump-blues faves, like Albert Ammons's arrangement of "Swanee River Boogie." --Douglas Wolk

2 out of 5 stars not quite THAT hot.........2004-06-21

I had very high hopes for this album, but I can't help finding it pretty derivative - although musicianship is solid, there's nothing TOO exciting going on. I guess I was expecting a more inspired offering form the controversial and mercurial Mr. Turner. Many tunes (written by WHOM, extacly?) are makeovers of already existing material, albeit with new/other lyrics. For example, "Ike's Theme" is merely Freddie King's "The Stumble" rehashed, and lacking the catchy hook of the original. On the up side: Ike's vocals are raw, strong and punchy, PLUS he's wearing a nasty lime green jacket, so some credit IS due.

5 out of 5 stars I LIKE IKE.... An awesome comeback.......2004-03-16

Unfortunately a lot of people can't get past some bad things Ike did decades ago when he was out of his mind on all kind of substances. Thats their problem. Ike is one of the most imporatnt musicians that ever lived and nothing can alter that. How refreshing to hear an album of real instruments. Ike comes back hard with a big slice of TRUE Rhythm & Blues. This is real music, and all the jams here are hitting.

My personal favorite is the awesome 'Gave You What You Wanted', which rides a crazy bassline and tells his ex, 'I gave you what you wanted, it ain't my fault you didn't like what you got'... Preach on, Brother Ike! Another cut is the hilarious opener, 'Tore Up', an ode to inebriation, where Ike simply went to get his paycheck, but met with the boys, one drink turned to two, two turned to ten, 'And everything went wrong'... Damn Ike, you know the deal. 'You Can't Winnum All' is another awesome cut, and he even resurrcts 'Rocket 88' for the modern era.

The production is mind blowing on this album. Song to song is just full of so much soul, grit and craftsmanship, this is an absolute essential. Ike not only jams hard on the guitar, he also bangs those piano keys like no ones business. The basslines are out of this world and the whole vibe here is uplifitng and perfect to whack on where your feeling down or some woman done you wrong.

If you can appreciate real music & open up your mind, this album is a worthy purchase, and sure to stay with you for a long, long time.

      5 out of 5 stars Tina who?.......2003-05-09

At last, Ike without Tina once again and laying an unshakeable claim as one of the true fathers of rock and roll. My favourite track is ``Gave you what you wanted (it's not my fault you didn't like what you got)''. Is that an ode to wotzername or WHAT????!

      5 out of 5 stars I Like Ike.......2002-06-20

This CD is a hoot with Ike back in a serious R&B groove! Check out "Ike's Theme" and "Cold Day in Hell". His versatility is on full display in this collection with Ike exhibiting his prowess on guitar and piano along with his mangy, low-down vocal style best displayed on "You Can't Winnum' All". A funkier piano styling than "Swanee River Boogie" is hard to find. Five stars (*****) for this back-to-the-roots tribute to R&B and the very birth of Rock n'Roll. (Check out the liner notes for more on the evolutionary development of the genre)

I have the old vinyl to this CD so I put my order in. Now I won't have to flip it over to hear the other side! (lol) I liked a few songs by Ike and Tina as well as by Tina herself. However, this album is probably my favorite. The other reviews said it all so well...so I'll keep it short. It's just hard not to feel the energy they put out on this one. Truly is a MUST have!

      5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Essential.......2006-02-14

This ranks up there with James Brown's "Live At The Apollo" as one of the greatest R&B concert documents. If you're worried (as I was) about whether playing at Carnegie Hall might have caused Ike and Tina to tone down their performance, fear not. This set absolutely sizzles.

I've read some criticism that the opening intros and performances by the Ikettes diminishes the impact of the album. I totally disagree. These opening performances give Ike and the Kings Of Rythm the opportunity to show off what a crack band they are, without being overshadowed by Tina. Ike is a superb guitarist and bandleader - I especially like Socow Richardson's drumming. The Ikette's performances are very good but wouldn't carry a whole album. But this allows you to share with the audience the anticipation of Tina's first appearance on stage, whipping the place into a frenzy. By the time she belts her first line "Do you like good music?", almost ten minutes into the CD, it comes across more as a proclamation than a question.

From the moment Tina first appears to the end of the CD, the energy level never lets up. All of the songs are covers but so what? Tina reinterprets them and makes each song her own. (Nobody would ever confuse this version of "Proud Mary" with the original by CCR). It might take guts to take on "Respect" after the legendary version cut by Aretha. But Tina doesn't try to redo Aretha's version, she completely makes the song her own, and does so highly successfully.

The fidelity of this remastered recording is exceptional. The sound is pure and natural, extremely well recorded and mixed. Crank it up and you feel like you're right there at Carnegie Hall.

If you only own a handful of R&B albums from the early 70s, this has to be one of them.

5 out of 5 stars Perhaps the greatest live album of all time..........2002-03-05

It's already been documented. Yes, we know that they had a stormy personal relationship, but often overshadowed by Tina's recent revelations of spousal abuse is the music. Though they had relatively few hits (only 6 Top 40 hits, and 25 R&B hits over a span of 16 years) onstage it was a completely different story. The Ike and Tina Turner Revue was the most explosive touring spectacle. Fronted by Tina, often referred to as the female James Brown and the human bombshell, and backed by Ike, The Ikettes and the Kings of Rhythm, the Revue toured constantly and on April 1, 1971 they found themselves about to make history at Carnegie Hall.

The disc opens with intros to the band, the Ikettes and Ike himself, yet as one would come to expect, the cd begins to burn up as Tina roars onto the stage. She instantly takes command of the audience with her incendiary vocals and spellbinding gyrations. They burn through covers of Jessie Hill's "Ooh Poo Pah Doo", and the Rolling Stones' "Honky Tonk Woman" a song which Tina did make her own. The show continues on with a remarkable performance of "A Love Like Yours" on which Tina's emotional depth and heartfelt singing (even if not to Ike really in hindsight) truly shine. Yet the ultimate showstopper arrives with the inception of "Proud Mary" their Grammy winning cover of the John Fogerty penned classic. Tina begins the song with her now famous locution that helped Ike and Tina to own this song. "We never, ever do nothin' nice and easy" she proclaims to uproarious approval. "We always do it nice and rough!" Then both Ike and Tina begin to sing the opening to the song just as they said they would, easy at first, then Tina launches into the wild and raunchy part of the song for eleven minutes and forty-two seconds of the finest rock and soul ever to rock Carnegie Hall. To follow is a marvelous blues performance of Don Robey's "I Smell Trouble" and Tina's fine performance convinces you of every word. Ike, not to be left out should be noted for his fine guitar playing. A cover of Sly and the Family Stone's "I Want To Take You Higher" comes across very well on the stage, and perhaps it was startling to Sly as Ike and Tina's version charted "higher" on the charts. The final climax to the show however, is the wildly rauchy, dirty, yet fun rendition of "I've Been Loving You Too Long". Complete with simulated orgasms and stroking of microphones, this song wows the Carnegie Hall audience and you can hear the ovations and approval of the crowd as Ike and Tina live up to their reputation as live performers of the first rate.

If one can listen to the music without bias, it can be seen that this performance by Ike and Tina Turner is one of the best live albums of all time. Onstage they were at their best, and what you hear is definitely what you get!

Good overview of Ike, although missing some of the instrumental gems. Check out "I Like Ike" on Rhino as another good compilation.

Contrary to the implication of the "Editorial Review", Jackie Brenston was not only CREDITED with writing "Rocket 88", he actually DID write it, according to the folks still living in Clarksdale who knew both of them at the time.

5 out of 5 stars Exellent cd of Ike Tuner & His Rhythm Kings.......2006-05-13

This is a great single disc collection of Ike Turner & His Rhythm Kings' brand of hot & sizzling rhythm & blues. From the huge hit Rocket 88 to the All The Blues medley, Ike's wild boogie piano playing and blues guitar is showcased well. This is one of those cd's you pop in your 50's custom/hotrod and blast while cruisin.' Great cd that jumps all the way through, and is great for jive dancers and swing dancers alike. Hot sizzling wild 50's r&b.

5 out of 5 stars I wish I could rate this one higher........2003-06-13

Forget that this alblum is a good sampler of Ike Turner's best work. Forget that this is high quality release from Ace. The original version of Rocket 88 is included here! The song, for those of you that don't know is, THE mother of all R&B songs. If I have a favorite song - "rocket 88" is it. It is the epitome of the 50's R&B feel- drinking, women.. and that's not all...it *is* afterall, a song about a car! What makes this song so special is the feel. The unique guitar sound was achived form stuffing a damaged guitar amplifier full of paper. The result was the *first* example of distortion. Mix that with some killer tenor sax and some tough-guy lyrics, and you have one of the most historically important and hardest rocking songs of all time. Some claim "Rocket" to be the first Rock n' Roll song. Other great songs include: 'All the blues all the time' A medley in which Ike's tearin' it up on some popular blues riffs of the day. In most cases better guitar work than the original song!, 'Night Howler' A lawdy miss clawdy spin off...and a good one too!, 'I Ain't Drunk', 'Nobody Wants Me' in the tradition of fats domino's 'nobody loves me'

Rocket 88 alone, make this worth picking up. This alblum is the prize of my collection.
