i'm ashamed to admit, arthur alexander fiend that i am, i never knew he recorded for monument/sound stage 7. So, here come my old friends ace records uk to let me in on this stuff. I'm telling you, you gotta get one of these. The first four tracks were recorded in Nashville with many of the same cats who played on "Blonde on Blonde," the next half dozen in LA with most of the Wrecking Crew, and many others under Reggie Young's direction, so needless to say, the production value is impressive and varied. The songs themselves, save a few odd covers, are some of Mr. Alexander's finest...the frenetic "You Don't Love Me (You Don't Care)" and "I Really Need You" are incredible recordings and easily two of his finest. In fact, there really are no bum tracks here, you can buy this with confidence...this is some of the best country soul you will ever hear. I just wish I'd heard it sooner!

Album Description

Digitally remastered four CD set containing all three of White's Monument Records albums in their entirety plus a slew of unreleased tracks, including ten 1969 Paris sessions and seven live performances from the Isle Of Wight. Recorded with such Muscle Shoals musicians as David Briggs, Norbert Putnam, and Jerry Carrigan, White's first album, 1969's Black And White, featured such originals as "Willie And Laura Mae Jones" and "Polk Salad Annie," along with such covers as Jimmy Webb's "Wichita Lineman." Released later that year, White's second album, ...Continued, featured the same Muscle Shoals players, along with Mike Utley, Tommy McClure, and Sammy Creason. Tony Joe came out in 1970, revealing an absence of the horns that had been so dominant on the previous records, and anchored by White's acoustic guitar. Following an electrifying performance at the legendary Isle Of Wight festival, White moved to Warner Bros. Records, ending this first chapter. Rhino. 2006.

Finally A TJW Box Set !!.......2006-12-16

Granted there is more to Tony Joe White than is provided in this box set. But,if you are a fan of his older work then this is for you. There are several alternate versions , some good, some not so good. And of course there are some killer covers such as WHAT DOES IT TAKE, WICHITA LINEMAN, LITTLE GREEN APPLES. Don't forget Tony's original works such as Roosevelt and Ira Lee, Rainy Night in Georgia and of course Polk Salad Annie. This is a true gem and it's been a long time coming !!!!!!!!!
