Get Back (to 1970).......2005-04-14
Al Green's 2nd album, 1970's "Green Is Blues" is a nice mix of stylish covers and a couple originals. The Right Stuff label has reissued this Hi release with a 4 bonus tracks, remastering and doing a nice job technically with this release. "Talk to Me" has Green's swinging soul groove that is sure to set your hips in motion. Green's cover of Smoky Robinson's "My Girl" is a soft gentle rendition, then the horns come in to punch up the mix. "The Letter" is a slow smoker as Green milks his romantic longing. Green's funky James Brown-inspired "Get Back Baby" comes before his pulsing version of the Beatles' "Get Back." The original release ended with Gershwin's "Summertime" that Green takes into a slow mellow stream as opposed to the popular Billy Stewart version from that same era. Of the bonus tracks, the Beatles' "I Want to Hold Your Hand" becomes a churning soul kitchen of desire & Chuck Berry's "Memphis, Tennessee" is likewise a tad slower, stirred by some tasty lead guitar. "Green Is Blues" is a great soul CD that sounds good 35 years after its original release. Enjoy!
A Great Debut.......2004-03-30
Al Green had been on the scene for several years before he signed with Hi Records in 1970 & got to record his debut. 'Green Is Blues' is an impressive set of covers, which also showcase Greens vocals as he varies up his styles far more than usual. The production is up tempo and well crafted, and the overall vibe here is breezy & fun.
The lone dud is 'Get Back Baby', the only original song on the album, and a sequel to his underground hit 'Back Up Train'. This version is less catchy, however the rest of the album is consistently solid and flows smoothly. Overall this is an essential 70s recording and a great glimpse of a different face of Al Green. The man always had a nice style back in the day and this is captured here perfectly. And while I don't appreciate record labels cluttering classic albums with left overs from the cutting room floor, I do appreciate the remastered sound. Check this album out for some of the Revs most awesome vocal performances.
Green Day.......2003-06-06
No one can get into a song like Al Green. On Green Is Blues, his interpretations of songs like "Get Back", "The Letter", "My Girl" and "Summertime" strip them to their core and Rev. Green refills them in with his expressive and inventive voice. Other songs like "One Woman", "What Am I Gonna Do With Myself" and "Gotta Find A New World" also show off his magnificent voice.
Fans will dig it.......2003-03-09
A grittier side of Al, before the slinky Philly sound jelled. This sounds a bit like Al fronting the Stax house band -- how could that be bad? The covers are so-so, but overall, this is Al with some edge. Great remastered sound, and songs you probably haven't heard. For Al Green fans, a refreshing taste of the emerging artist, just before the hit machine kicked in.

Customer Reviews:
not to great.......2007-04-04
We were disappointed with this CD, but for the price I guess we can't expect much. I didn't care for the new style presentation of the songs. I like a more traditional rendering.
Not so bad, 100 tunes for 4$.......2005-06-22
I red the comments of two other people who have bought this 4 CD BOX SET and it is not really so bad. I will even add that there are some excellent tunes. However, I must agree with the fact that few tunes seem to have been recorded 40 or 50 years ago, mainly when you hear the scratches of an old turntable but it is just 2 or 3 tunes. Furthermore, if you do not know American music, it is a good BOX SET to buy if you consider that you received 4 CD for 4$ including 100 tunes. On these 4 CD, I have heard some orchestration that I have never heard before and I consider that they are different but interesting. Any way, after hearing these 100 tunes, you will say to yourself that you like this tune, this other tune, this other tune and so on and you will be able to buy a more expensive CD with the tunes that you like. However, I have bought many CDs in the last few weeks and as you know, there are always some tunes that you like and some tunes that you do not like on every CD that you will buy. So, don't buy it at 25$ but at 4 or 5$ dollars, it is a very good choice for 100 tunes.
You get what you pay for........2004-07-04
You get what you pay for. The singers put their own spin on the singing of each song. If you didn't hear the words you would not recognize some of them. Even some of the music sounds like a bad recording of music played on a turntable. Definitely not worth the price.
Now I know why there were no song samples to listen to ..........2004-07-04
I wish this review had been here when I was thinking of purchasing it. I guess you get what you pay for. If you are thinking of buying this, you are better off recording your own CDs (or at least buying one that you can listen to a sampling of the songs). This album includes songs that were mere recordings of the songs playing on an old record player. It's almost so unbelievable that it is funny.

Product Description
Jeremy Nicholas writes: Phrases that chill the heart: I want a volunteer from the audience. Is this your car, sir? Have we shown you our holiday snaps? Or how about Tonights lecture is on the art of writing comedy. Go to that seminar and one thing you know for sure in advance is that you are consigning yourself to an evening devoid of any humor. Dissecting comedy, analyzing jokes or, in this case, comic songs, has all the allure of pulling off the wings of a butterfly to see how it flies. Setting off writing a comic song is rather like being your own crossword compiler, designing the grid, filling in all the squares, setting your own clues. No, its not, really. Its more like taking a pile of kids building bricks and making a spectacular skyscraper from them. No, thats not it either. But there are elements of both that are pertinent (a good word for seminars). In other words, comedy (and comic songwriting) is hard work. Think of the last time you told a joke and it didnt come off. The material was right but maybe the delivery was off. But remember the joy when the response was perfect: not only did they laugh, but you sensed the anticipation: this is going to be funny. And for this album, the anticipation certainly pays off. Anyone who grew up in the 1950s and 1960s will recall the wonderful humor of the works of Tom Lehrer, the classic HMV (Angel in this country) LPs of Michael Flanders and Donald Swann. More recently weve seen how Stephen Sondheim and William Bolcom can easily move back and forth between the serious and the humorous. And just to prove that comedy can be serious business, we have the participation of Marc-Andre Hamelin, one of the most highly regarded concert and recital pianists as accompanist and composer, joined by his wife Jody Karin Applebaum. Her resume includes performances of Bachs Christmas Oratorio and St. Matthew Passion, Handels Messiah, to contemporary works by Stephen Albert, Heitor Villa-Lobos and Gorecki. Together they have performed in New York, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Canada, England and the Middle East. Together they have recorded music of Britten, Schoenberg, Bolcom, Wolpe, Weill, Satie and Poulenc. Here both they and you have some fun for a change!
Customer Reviews:
A Trancendental Sense of Humor!!!!!!.......2005-07-14
As an amateur pianist, I know how it is to play music of different styles for different occasions. I also have a slightly skewered sense of humor as well as a love of serious classical music. So on my shelves I have Dr. Demento as well as Mahler, Broadway Shows as well as Shostakovich. Marc-Andre Hamelin, one of the best pianist nowadays because he makes the most hardest piece of music sound easy, is married to Jody Karin Applebaum, a wonderful singer. They have recorded the Cabaret songs of Bolcom, Britten and Fredrich Hollaender and now turn their attention to comedy songs from many eras. Much of this repertoire is taken from Sarah Walker's Cd on Hyperion. Applebaum's diction is very clear and every song has a different mood and different voices and accents when needed. Comparisons between William Bolcom and Joan Morris are inevitable. Bolcom's "Lime Jello Marshmallow Cottage Cheese Surprise" is also included. The program notes are written by Jeremy Nicholas, who has provided us with very informative program notes for Hyperion CD's, and who has written some wonderful songs such as "Usherette's Blues" and "Place Settings". Tom Lehrer's classic "Masochism Tango" makes an appearance (which is also on one of Dr. Demento's greatest hits CD's).Hamelin's recordings and performances have one thing that many pianist's do not have-HUMOR (when it's needed, of course). Here, he gets to put it to good use, and you can tell that they're having fun. This is a live recording, so there is much laughing from the audience, and I wouldn't have it any other way. Hamelin keeps suprising me with his CD's and repertoire choices, and this is no exception. Let's have some more, please!!! (maybe Dave Frishberg, more Flanders and Swann?).

Customer Reviews:
Pre-Al Green Al Green.......2002-08-13
In the 70's Al Green perfected his own unique sound; excellent, moody melodies, crisp horns, sassy female backing vocals and his trademark falsetto. Consequently, he had a string of consistent, excellent albums longer than almost any artists, yet because of the lack of variety another Al Green release could hardly be considered exciting. "Green Is Blues," however, was recorded before Al Green fell into this formula. Here a younger Al Green tries to find his niche by experimenting with southern soul, r&b and blues. It may not be as jaw-droppingly amazing as subsequent albums, but it is worth having simply because its one of the few releases where Al Green mixes things up a bit. Fans of Al Green who are looking for an interesting departure from his trademark sound will love this. You can't really go wrong with any Al Green release, but those looking for a typical Al Green release would be better off with "Still in Love With You" or his greatest hits.
Green Is Money.......2001-03-13
No one can get into a song like Al Green. On Green Is Blues, his interpretations of songs like "Get Back", "The Letter", "My Girl" and "Summertime" strip them to their core and Rev. Green refills them in with his expressive and inventive voice. Other songs like "One Woman", "What Am I Gonna Do With Myself" and "Gotta Find A New World" also show off his magnificent voice.

Big Fan.......2000-03-25
Back in 1972 when i walked in to our local "record store" ,only vinyl then, and I asked for "I'm still in love with you" the sales guy said, "if your fan of al green try this one" and handed me "green is blues" well this album showed me what Al Green really had and still has, TALENT. Songs like "One woman" and "Got to find a new world" are insights into Al Green's gift of soul, phrasing, and melody all wrap into a great performer. This is one of my favorite albums "yea I still have and I still play it.

Not that you would buy this, but just thought i'd warn you to stay away from it, should you see it second hand for a dollar and think that might a good use of a dollar.
This CD is 90% of the rubbish Green produced in the 80's. It has none of his 70s' classics. It has probably two songs not from the 80's, and they're instantly a relief to the ears.
Your dollar would be better used buying a shoe-horn or a pack of gum.
