Anthologist Quincy Newell's superb series continues with a snapshot of the tracks that underground hip-hop radio was banging in 1991. Rap was starting to splinter into factions: there was Will Smith (as the Fresh Prince) and the poppy side of Heavy D. in one corner, and in the other was the gunslinging school that was starting to develop into a gangsta culture on the West Coast (and that Run-DMC, surprisingly, allied themselves with). But there was also a third way--the politics-and-dancing route of Brand Nubian and Leaders of the New School--and a fourth, the wildly creative, nearly absurdist flow of cult favorites like Organized Konfusion and the Ultramagnetic MCs. And Chubb Rock, who ruled the underground's dance floors and broadcasts that year, shows up with three stone classics. --Douglas Wolk

Not what I expected........2007-04-26
One of the pieces has irritating and dissonant passages mingled with relaxing, soothing passages. Also the music changes tempo and volume quite often, which would wake me up if I did start to drift off.
Since I expected something that would put me to sleep, listening to this is upsetting, because I wasted my money.
However, since it works well for most reviewers, I figure I must hear things differently, or have a harder time falling asleep than most. Maybe if I listened to it enough to get used to it, it might work better.
I would like to find something totally soothing and relaxing--maybe I need actual recordings of water or rain, but I prefer music. Any suggestions?

Album Description
Waxing Deep Records is pleased to announce the first ever compilation of Cuban funk: Si, Para Usted: The Funky Beats of Revolutionary Cuba, Volume One. An unprecedented combination of socialism and artistic freedom flourished during the mid-years of Castro's Cuba, enabling musicians to create an innovative body of music based on traditional styles like those made famous by the Buena Vista Social Club. Si, Para Usted captures the spirit of this time. The music ranges from son, beat, jazz, and funk, and abounds with psychedelic influences, electronic experimentation, and a heavy dose of soul. Communist funk may seem unlikely, but here it is. Si, Para Usted was lovingly compiled by Dan Zacks of Waxing Deep Radio in response to massive listener demand for the Cuban music played on the show. Outside of the Waxing Deep archive, the bulk of funky Cuban music is virtually unobtainable. Cuban recordings were never widely distributed and few have been reissued. Utterly committed to sharing good music, Dan took it upon himself to make these fantastic tracks more widely accessible. Almost all of the tracks were re-mastered from the original tapes kept by the Cuban government in a dusty Havana warehouse. Given the poor quality of Cuban vinyl, this means the music on Si, Para Usted has a quality of sound previously unavailable. Quite simply, the music has never sounded this good.

The music develops energetically throughout the set, slowly mounting into a fascinating soundscape; one that is full of elation and wonder. From its beginning to end you get lost in a reminiscent daydream, wondering if the next track will be as beautiful as the last. I was never disappointed.
I highly recommend this album, along with Above and Beyond's other releases, to people who listen for the emotional beauty of music. There is musical genius hidden in every track; and for that simple reason alone, it is quite an album to own.

Tribe's fourth album, Beats, Rhymes, and Life, should be the awkward one, the album on which the group, growing up, falters a little as it figures out what it's going to do next. It isn't. Marked by a number of changes, both internally (this is the album on which the Ummah production crew takes over, and it also marks Q-Tip's new religious faith) and externally (by 1996 Quest's jazzy approach to hip-hop had fallen out of popular favor), Beats finds Tribe taking it as it comes and handling all of the challenges with flair. It's a slower, steadier album than either People's Instinctive Travels or The Low End Theory, but that's a description, not a complaint; rather, it gives you plenty of time to enjoy jams like "1nce Again." It doesn't hurt that Q-Tip and Phife Dog are feeling the flow here; an inspired pairing with distinctive voices and different strengths, they trade verses with fluid grace. --Randy SilverCustomer Reviews:

Public Enemy is not the kind of group that does compromise--either you own It Takes A Nation of Millions To Hold Us Back and its explosive follow-up Fear of a Black Planet in their entirety or you simply hate music. So use this all-too-brief primer merely as a map to find your way to the albums that actually shook the world, mixing blunt politics with hard-hitting beats and Chuck D's prophet-like zeal for affecting change. If nothing else, tracks like "Bring The Noise" and "Fight The Power" serve as timely reminders of how much power hip-hop can wield when not tripped up in name-calling and bitch-slapping (D famously dubbed the genre "CNN for black people"), while on "911 is a Joke" Flava Flav proves there's a fine-line between laughter and tears. --Aidin VaziriCustomer Reviews:

This is what got me into Public Enemy!.......2006-08-01
Anyway, I had heard a few samples from p.e. on tv and the internet, and decided to look for one of their cds. They sounded so different than anything I've heard before. Chuck D's vocal energy and style grabs your attention right away, while Flava's crazy wierdness keeps you hooked. While looking through Wallmart's cd selection, I came across this cd and decided that a greatest hits cd would be a perfect introduction to a group I had never really listened to before.(It was only 10 bucks, so what harm could it be?) Lemme tell ya, after listening through the cd once, my jaw was dropped, and I was floored.
First off, for any fans of pop-rap with candy-coated beats, this cd is NOT for you. Public Enemy are raw, hard, and abrasive. They're definatly not for everyone.
Second, their lyrics are political, and confront many serious issues that were being ignored during that time. Pay close attention, and you'll see that they actually have something important to say and aren't just grunting about their cars, money, hoes, bling-bling, whatever.
Finally, while their music may sound somewhat cacaphony at times, they were definatly way ahead of their time. They have the rare ability to make seemingly clashing noises work together in an intriguing and almost harmoneous way. For example, "Rebel Without A Pause" uses a repetitive screeching tea kettle in the background, which would be ear-drum-breaking in any other circumstance. However, combined with the song's heavy bass and Chuck D's lyrical wit, the kettle becomes less of a nussance and more of an actual instrument that enhances the song's quality. (Yeah, that sounds really stupid, but I don't have any other way of describing it.)
So yeah, that's another one of my rambling reviews. I would recomend this cd to hip-hop fans who are open-minded and ready for beats that are rough and different from anything else. I've become a huge fan of p.e. because of this cd, and I plan to buy more of their work. That's all for now. PEACE
PE Keep Bringin That Noise! [and sonnin' Viper].......2006-07-06
Public Enemy albums are consistent affairs with segues, inserts and instrumentals acting as the musical glue for each release. Some have therefore argued that listening to the singles in isolation is a less cohesive affair. I disagree. While Chuck D maintains that the group has never been singles orientated, their discography begs to differ: throughout the early 1990's, Public Enemy single releases were massive affairs accompanied by groundbreaking videos and fantastic cover art. Remember that "Fight the Power" only appeared on "Fear of a Black Planet" some several months after it "hit" - as did the B side release of "Rebel without A Pause" prior to "It Takes a Nation of Millions...".
This collection of singles reinforces their creative output, musicianship and legacy. The groups most commerciably accessible offerings are all here in their high-rotation-strong-unit-sales glory: the aforementioned "Fight The Power", "Hazy Shade of Criminal", "Shut Em Down", "911 Is A Joke" and the hugely popular "Give It Up", arguably the groups most successful single in terms of retail sales.
PE have crammed 18 cuts on to this release - but this just barely represents their release schedule. There are several cuts that have been released as singles and/or videos that are ommitted, including "Livin In A Zoo" (from the CB4 soundtrack), "Get off My Back", "Shake Your Booty", "I Stand Accused", "Louder Than A Bomb (Remix)", "Anti N*gga Machine/Burn Hollywood Burn" and the love-it-or-hate-it Anthrax thrash version of "Bring Tha Noize". A double disc edition with say, 28 tracks would have been nice - but then again, Def Jam/Universal dont want to cannibalise any trailing album sales the groups catalogue may still command!
Oh yeah, the reviewer "Viper" is the embodiment of the typical ignorant white American youth that PE originally set out to educate! Its unfortunate, but he of his ilk will never understand what true hip hop is or represents. "Hip hop" to Viper and most other Generation Y'ers constists of gun toting and talking about how much money you have and how many "biyatchs" youre doing. Grafitti? Breaking? DJ'ing? Beatboxing? Get outa here - that stuff's ancient, right Viper? Cats like Juvenile and Fitty Cent are the truth yeah!? heheheheh!!!!
Not all is lost though - I know plenty of young cats who take the time to check their history and educate themselves. Its just that people like Viper are already a lost cause - this album is the antithesis to his played out, thugged out BS so it will never get heard. But thats okay, cos dudes like me will never check for G Unit or Juvenile - so like PE's ratio of message:music, in the end there is some balance...
Kids, put away your Paul Wall and Nelly albums...this is some REAL rap music.......2006-04-12

Product Description
Joining up once again with the boys at the Backroom, the team that brought you 2001's critically acclaimed "Color Of Silence," Tiffany has continued her passion and has at long last recorded the consummate Club/Dance project her fans have so eagerly awaited. This collection of eleven house oriented tracks includes a fresh take on her smash hit "I Think We're Alone Now" and a remix by the up and coming dance duo "Second Sun." Finding her stride on this energetic and brilliantly crafted album, Tiffany's unique and mesmerizing voice is reminiscent of Aretha and Anastacia at their soulful best, and will leave you breathless.Customer Reviews:
Appropriate Album Title for a Terrific Album.......2007-04-16
"Dust off and Dance", is quite likely to be a reference to Tiffany herself dusting off the past (be it harsh reviewes, haters, or the mood of "The Color of Silence"), and quite literally just dancing. At least "Dust off and Dance" doesn't try to be anything more than a dance / disco / Hi NRG album - and a fantastic one at that. Production blends the best of modern day sounds with a bit of the 80's, combined with Tiffany's powerful voice and some great lyrics, most of which are written by her, resulting in an album that is easy to listen to over and over again.
The songs may not seem as deep on the surface as those from her previous album, but they all tell a story and do have important meanings to them, like enjoying life as it is so short. Some of the songs and lyrics are a bit suggestive, but the album was written, according to Tiffany, with her gay fans in mind. It's also appropriate for the dance floor (obviously). While the overall mood of the album is upbeat, there are a couple of ballads, but even they are upbeat. It's great to see that the album has been getting some play on the hit TV series "Ugly Betty". The biggest problem with the album though is that it is too short - only eleven songs, two of which are remixes. But hey, quality over quantity anyday.

The Best Worldwide........2007-07-24
The mixing is pretty consistent in both CDs. What is the noticeable difference between the two? Disc one contains vocal numbers (especially male vocals), while CD two doesn't. However they work in their own ways.
CD 1 starts with two enjoyable electro influenced numbers (including another good Jaytech release) that, in my opinion, are upfront and energetic and get your ready the real sonic journey that takes place between tracks 3 and 8. "Year Zero" is another predictably good song with Andy Moor (and I've yet to hear anything bad by Mr. Moor)and Orkidea and it continues this nice vibe with two great songs by Super 8 and Tab with good male vocals, and very enjoyable number by Above and Beyond "World on Fire. It then explodes with Daniel Kandis smasher "Child" and then continues this energy with the rapid fire vocal on David West's "Make U Mine" and Super 8 and Tabs "Won't Sleep Tonight". Tracks 9-13 lose this great energy for some reason at the end (Disc 2 does this to) but not to worry the tracks are all great, especially Stephen J. Kroos's "Sadistick," Kyau and Albert's addictively catchy "Are You Fine" and a very nice closer in "Blue Bird."
On Disc 2 "Sex on the Beach" is an interesting song, but the disc doesn't really begin until track 2 with another great Daniel Kandi number "Nova" follower by another great Sunny Lax number "M.I.R.A", tracks 5 and 6 keep it moving but it isn't until the glory of Above and Beyond's "Tri-State" that the CD really gets back on track. "Tri-State" was the song I was really dying for a remix of and the finally released a mix CD with this one by Robert Nickson (another great mix of this is the Frase mix). Only problem is that Mark Pledger cut this song too short in my opinion. But all is forgotten when we reach Mark Pledger own contribution "On the Edge" and this continues into the beautiful "Morning Drive" by Mike Shiver and Nitrous Oxide's "Morning Light." However, again, by the end at track 11 this vibe is lost. Again the songs are good but they don't fit in well with the rest of the CD.
Bottom Line: If you are a fan of Anjunabeats in particular or good trance in general this is a CD you want in your collection. However if this is your first Anjunabeats album, don't get this. Instead get Above and Beyond's Anjunabeats 5 which is simply mindblowing. If you already have Anjunabeats and want another great mix by some up and coming DJs on the Anjunabeats label, then you've come to the right place. Get this.
Excellent compilation for fans of Above & beyond........2007-02-02
You can't go wrong with Anjunabeats!.......2007-01-28
If I were to rate the CDs individually, I would give CD1 4 stars and CD2 4 1/2 stars. CD1 started out with a house track followed by a techno track that didn't appeal to me. It did have some excellent standouts, namely "Year Zero" (by Andy Moor), "World On Fire" (by Above & Beyond), "Child" (by Daniel Kandi), "Won't Sleep Tonight" (by Super8 & Tab), and "Untitled Audio" (by Mike Koglin vs. P.O.S.), and a stunning closer in "Blue Bird" (by Sunny Lax).
CD2 was a notch better, with excellent high energy and melodic trance throughout most of the CD. The only tracks that really disappointed me were the last two, for they were quite "hard," and didn't fit in with the rest of the album. Tracks 1-4 were very good, followed by 2 mediocre numbers, and then starting with track 7 we are treated to a string of 6 tracks that defy description; they are soooo good. I just loved Robert Nickson's remix of Above & Beyond's "Tri-State" (it was much more energetic than the original mix). When the piano kicks in one is reminded of Robert Miles' immortal hit "Children." This track is followed by Mark Pledger's "On The Edge," a very refreshing number, and the energy continues to build with more "ear candy" on tracks 9-12. Again, it was too bad Mr. Pledger chose to end his excellent mix with 2 "hard" trancers that didn't jibe with the previous tracks, but I will forgive him because of the smile he brought to my face up to that point.

Who knew that combining booming Miami bass booty sounds, super cheesey `80s samples and loud Brazilian beats in a deliberately lo-tech manner, with (honestly) poorly shouted off-key rhymes sung atop the whole distorted, chaotic business would provide some of the most amazing dance music of the `00s? Like the best punk rock, this Brazilian dance music clearly aims to be as stupid as possible and just get people moving. But, as with "Mulher Coca Cola" by Ricardo E Esquisito, and De Falla's " Popozuda Rock'n'roll," the result is, often enough, sublimely brilliant. Even the songs that don't really work, such as MC Jack E Chocolate's choppy, opera-sampling "Pavaroty," are worth repeated listens. People are writing their dissertations on this stuff right now, while at the beyond-bump-and-grind-heavy parties this music fuels in Brazil, girls allegedly wake up pregnant a month later without knowing who the father is. So, use this music responsibly, kids! --Mike McGonigalCustomer Reviews:
