5 out of 5 stars "Totally Gnarly" or "Gag me with a Spoon"?.......2007-05-31

Some of the greatest moments of my life were in high school!! The mid 80's when I was carefree and lived life unfettered! No bills, no boss, no cares! Just me and my pastel suits and thin leather ties and full head of hair....(Man, I actually WORE those suits?!?!)
Fond nostalgia aside, the whole 'retro' thing is forcing the 80's upon us once again and you might as well admit that you were one of the characters from The Breakfast Club! (Mmmmmm....Ally Sheedy.)
Dropping these discs into my player and hitting shuffle just makes it all come flooding back!
But to tell a shameful truth? I really HAD to buy this set because of "Pac-Man Fever" by Buckner and Garcia and "Sweetheart" by Franke & the Knockouts. I've never seen these songs anywhere else!
I'm not sure I even looked at the other songs before my credit card was being swiped by the good folks at Amazon!!
So, yeah, again, I bought on impulse but I damn sure don't regret it!! In fact, I'd suggest we embrace the "ME, ME, ME" decade just once more and "BUY, BUY, BUY" this set.
If you went to high school in the 80's like I did, simply put, this will bring back some great memories.
(Unless, of course, your high school years sucked. To which, I say, "That's too bad. I'm sorry for you.")
Either way, just admit that the 80's were a great time for music and pastel suits and thin leather ties.........(chicks dig the thin tie still, right? Right? Anybody? Can I get a witness?)
Where's Don Johnson when I need him?
Oh, here he is....Disc 6, Song 19!

4 out of 5 stars Time Warp.......2007-05-23

I guess only someone who was a teen or 20something could really appreciate
this set. The 80s were my high school and college years and I was
certainly guilty of listening to the radio .... This set is awesome and
is really made indispensable with the booklet. My only gripe lies with
the artists that were huge in the 80s, but evidently could not be licensed
for this set....Notably U2, REM, Hoodoo Gurus, Wall of Voodoo, etc

3 out of 5 stars Shut up!.......2007-03-04

Like, for sure, half of it is like totally major gross-out, but the other half is like bitchin! Just shut up already and buy it!

2 out of 5 stars missing tracks.......2007-02-26

lots of great 80's music available in these cds, but missing one of the greatest groups of the decade...Wham!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent CD Set!.......2007-01-18

I purchased this set for my 13 year old daughter. It seems the 80's are making a big comeback. She loves it! I love it, too!! It has all the most popular songs from the 80's plus a few you do not hear anywhere now. It's great! It brings back a lot of memories, GOOD TIMES!!

A good, inexpensive single-disc compilation of Rundgren singles may not be what the world's been waiting for, but it's a fine thing nonetheless. Largely avoiding the big pretensions of many of his post-Something/Anything? albums, this record distills 15 years of releases into a hits-just-keep-on-coming set which makes sense of the sensibility that produced the bemusedly soulful "Hello It's Me," the straightforwardly sweet "Dream Goes On Forever," and the outright goofy "Bang the Drum All Day." --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars OLDIES BUT GOODIES.......2007-05-14

I LOVE THIS CD. IT IS SO FULL OF MEMORIES. GREAT VOCALS.

5 out of 5 stars Lots of depth and songs that speak to everyone, not just Todd Rundgren fans.......2007-03-17

I am not what would be called a "dyed in the wool" Todd Rundgren fan. However, I think he is very talented and some of his songs demonstrate a depth and sensitivity that are rare. Through music and his ability in the area of vocal nuances, Todd reaches deeply into the soul. Two of my favorite songs on this album are "Can We Still Be Friends" and "Love is the Answer." Both of these have made my hair stand up because they convey their message so powerfully.

If you are a casual Todd Rundgren fan this is the album to get. The choice of material is excellent and there is a lot of music here for a low cost that stands up well to repeated listening. I would pat twice the price just to have the two songs I mentioned above. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars TODD RUNDGREN RISES FOR THE OCCASION WITH THIS COMPILATION........2007-03-07

I will be writing a review on the legendary compilation album entitled "THE VERY BEST OF TODD RUNDGREN" by one of Rock's legendary artists, I give you TODD RUNDGREN. This legendary compilation album was originally released in 1997 on Compact Disc on the Rhino Records label which is licensed from Bearsville Records Inc. As always, if I hear any new additional information concerning this legendary compilation album or the artist, I will edit this review immediately so that you the consumer will get the best informative and most accurate review possible.

TODD RUNDGREN will forever go down in Rock n' Roll history as being the most modest music artist ever. RUNDGREN never gives himself any credit nor does he give himself a pat on the back when deserved. In reality, RUNDGREN has written, recorded and delivered some of the greatest classic songs in Rock n' Roll history. RUNDGREN would begin his career in the late 60's with a band called NAZZ. However, it would be his solo career that RUNDGREN would strike gold. RUNDGREN would write and record several hits throughout his whole solo career. This compilation album highlights RUNDGREN'S solo period from 1970 to 1985. This compilation album also includes the hits he wrote with the band UTOPIA from 1977 to 1980. This compilation album also includes the 1989 hit single "The Want Of A Nail" recorded with Bobby Womack. In my opinion, "THE VERY BEST OF TODD RUNDGREN" is a true testament of a unheralded genius and a fine fitting tribute to a legendary singer/songwriter that was indeed, ahead of his time.

Now it is time to let the music speak for itself and do all of the talking. This compilation album begins with the legendary mellow Rocker "We Gotta Get You A Woman," the slow beautiful mellow "Be Nice To me," the breathtaking mellow Rocker "I Saw The Light," the forever RUNDGREN trademark mellow Rocker "Hello It's Me," the blistering Rocker "Couldn't I just Tell You," the beautiful mellow Rocker "Just One Victory," the beautiful acoustic soulful "A Dream Goes On Forever," the fast paced sythesized Rocker "Real Man," the beautiful acoustic Rocker "Love Of The Common Man," the beautiful slow soothing RUNDGREN composition that was also a hit for England Dan & John Ford Coley "Love Is The answer," the merciless Rocker "Love In Action," the slow beautiful synthesized song that was also a hit for Rod Stewart "Can We Still Be Friends," the groundbreaking mellow Rocker "The Very Last Time," the circus filled like atmosphere fast paced synthesized mellow Rocker "Bang The Drum All Day," the incredible synthesized fast paced mellow Rocker "Something To Fall Back On" and the danceable synthesized killer Rocker "The Want Of A Nail." May I also add that RUNDGREN really lets loose on this fabulous compilation album. I grew up listening to all of these songs and it felt great listening to them all over again on one disc.

Overall, this is one hell of a compilation album worth seeking further into and cheeking out especially if you are the new and curious beginner for the first time of RUNDGREN'S sound and music.

I would like to highly recommend purchasing this legendary compilation album to own as a valuable and important part of his or her own personal music collection. This legendary compilation album has already proven to stand the test of time and will always be around to be enjoyed, appreciated and cherished for many years to come, NOW AND FOREVER. This is one great collection that a serious devout music collector would not want to be without.

In closing, TODD RUNDGREN is here to stay. Rock n' Roll needs a modest artist and entertainer like RUNDGREN to keep Rock n' Roll humble and breathing happily. As of now, RUNDGREN has been touring as a new member with THE CARS. From what I hear, THE CARS have been doing extremely well. I guess that goes to show you that we have not seen or heard the last of RUNDGREN yet. I also anticipate that we will be hearing from RUNDGREN again in the near future soon. So here's to you TODD. Keep Persevering. Keep The Faith. And as the saying goes, "AND THE REST IS ROCK N' ROLL HISTORY," am I wrong? Thanks for reading my review and I hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also hope that you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. TODD RUNDGREN RULES. Long Live Rock n' Roll. Rock out always and take it easy. Forever In Rock, John L.

3 out of 5 stars udork.......2007-01-04

I bought this CD just so I could hear some old favorites over and over again.

5 out of 5 stars A great intro to Todd Rundgren's work.......2006-12-18

I bought this disc on a whim, knowing how much I enjoyed Rundgren's mainstream work and I was not disappointed. There is not a single bad track on this disc, although I'm not a huge fan of Bang The Drum All Day. Real good stuff. I'd like to recommend this disc to those who've only listened to the pop stuff on the radio these days. Here's what music is really all about.

James Ingram to me is one of the best singers of all time. His voice is very unique, and I love the fact that he doesn't have to riff in any of his songs. Listen to songs like How do you keep the Music Playing, and Baby, Come to Me, and you will see what I mean. James, come back out with a new album!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars The best of the best!.......2007-07-09

This 2001 Tower of Power anthology spans the period between 1972 and 1976, during which they were signed to Warner Records. The albums represented include 1972's Bump City, 1973's Tower of Power, 1974's Back to Oakland, and 1975's In the Slot and Urban Renewal. These albums are widely considered the best TOP ever recorded, and this collection is a well-selected compilation of the best of these fine albums. During this period, Oakland's Tower of Power set themselves apart from the budding west coast music scene with their brand of soulful funk (or funky soul, whichever you prefer). Most famous was their incredibly tight horn section, which had as many as six players and full instrumentation. Besides being a vastly talented section, these players play so well together and their chemistry makes them a joy to listen to. The rhythm and percussion section is also very talented, so musically Tower of Power is just awesome on this disc. During this period, Tower of Power had two lead vocalists. On the earlier albums, the competent Rick Stevens was the singer, before being replaced by the wonderful Lenny Williams in 1973. Williams is very entertaining. Besides being a really gifted vocalist, he is so much fun because of his yelling and performance, you can tell he's having fun too. His voice has great range and versatility, and he brings a lot of soul and even gospel influence to the group. The tracklist is very well selected, and it is done in chronological order, so you can watch the band's progression. There's a nice balance of pure upbeat funk tracks and their signature slow jams. Tower of Power songs are all so well written and produced, and this record is a perfect example. I highly recommend "The Very Best of Tower of Power: The Warner Years" to all.

The compilation kicks off with a bang, the blasting "You Got to Funkafize," showcasing the awesomely powerful horn section. "What Happened to the World That Day?" is a heartfelt love song, Rick Stevens' influence is pretty clear on these earlier tracks. "Down to the Nightclub" was their first big hit, a swinging party song. "You're Still a Young Man" is another solid early-70s slow jam. "What Is Hip?" is their best known song, musically incredible, with a gorgeous arrangement for the funk guitar and horns. Lenny Williams also lends one of his finest performances ever on this song. "So Very Hard to Go" is among my favorites, an inspired love song, and "This Time It's Real" is also very appealing, a happy and hopeful ode. The slow "Will I Ever Find a Love?" precedes the awesome "Soul Vaccination," a fast and funky cut from the same mold as "What Is Hip?," but maybe even better. "Time Will Tell" and "Below Us All the City Lights" are both fine examples of TOP's range and versatility, and "Don't Change Horses (In the Middle of a Stream)" is a pumped up, swinging number. The slow, well-produced songs "Willing to Learn" and "I Won't Leave Unless You Want Me To" are split by the unforgettable "Only So Much Oil in the Ground," with the soaring horn cadence and Williams' wild vocals. The collection closes with the inspired "You're So Wonderful, So Marvelous."

One thing I love about Tower of Power's 1970s discography is that unlike so much music from that era, it really doesn't sound dated at all even today. Their music is so unique, well-produced, and exhibiting talent that the sound is timeless. For anyone who's a new listener or was a fan back in the day, "The Very Best of Tower of Power: The Warner Years" is a must have in the collection.

4 out of 5 stars Not so faulty Tower.......2007-01-09

A bit dated, but I'm such a screaming fan I'd take recordings from when they were all in diapers!

5 out of 5 stars You want to know the truth in life..........2006-06-24

...don't pass Tower of Power by. This band is smokin.' They have it all, great vocals, great compositions, great horns and arrangements. I would have loved to see Man From The Past on this one, but overall a very solid collection. So Very Hard To Go is top notch material - one of my all time favorites and they have so many great tunes - Below Us All The City Lights, Down To The Nightclub, What Is Hip, This Times It's Real, Only So Much Oil. Easily one of the best bands from the 70's. Got to have this one!

5 out of 5 stars I would give it 6 stars if I could .......2005-11-02

This band is one of the greatest bands of all-time, and most people don't even know it. Their Top Ten songs are:
1. "What is Hip?"
2. "Down to the Night Club."
3. "Soul Vaccination".
4. "Only so much Oil in the Ground".
5. "Your still a Young Man".
6. "Diggin' on James Brown".
7. "Clever Girl".
8. "Attitude Dance".
9. "Oakland Zone".
10. "Page One".

3 out of 5 stars Tower of Power: Live they are far better.......2005-06-26

Hallo Folks. I went to two concerts of TOP in the previous years in Holland, One time outdoor for the North Sea Jazz Fetival in The Hague and one time In Paradiso, in Amsterdam. I like TOP live far better than their album recordings. So for me the best CD is TOP live. This contains all their best hits, which are played more free, open and are recorder with much more base and a clearer sound. If you are a new fan, or a a huge fan, I would recommend the Live CD.

This double record from 1972 remains the definitive collection of Rundgren's long career. With Rundren acting as a one-man-band for three-quarters of the session, it was also his bid for a Ph.D. from the college of musical knowledge. He deserved the degree for simply writing the lead-off track, "I Saw the Light," a melodic pop-rock gem that remains Rundgren's greatest hit. Rundgren excels at Beatles-esque pop-rock ("Couldn't I Just Tell You," "Wolfman Jack") and Philadelphia-styled soul ballads ("It Wouldn't Have Made Any Difference," "Hello, It's Me"). He also sticks his toe into heavy metal ("Black Maria"), jazz-rock fusion ("Breathless"), and cerebral pop ("The Night the Carousel Burnt Down"). Like most double albums, there's fat on the play-list, but the best of Something/Anything gave credence to Rundgren's boast of being a wizard and a true star. --John Milward

5 out of 5 stars What's more to say? TR is a GENIUS........2007-07-22

I've been a Todd fan for....37 years now and though I've been away from his light for a few years, I am in the process of re-discovering his music. ALL HIS MUSIC MAKES YOU FEEL GOOD! We can debate pros and cons of this and that, but the simple fact remains that EVERYTHING he puts out is "city in my head" preciously supurb. You can pick any cd...go ahead...pick something/anything...and you'll see what I mean. A lot of what he does in the solo masterpieces he does all by himself...vocals, instruments, production, treatments. And Utopia is so very, very excellent. What more to say?

5 out of 5 stars something/anything What a talent!!!!!!!!!.......2007-05-08

I recently bought a Bonnie Tyler CD(super hits) because I loved a couple of her songs(Bright eyes,I'm holding out for a heroe)which by the way is terrific.Every song was great but I loved her duet with Todd Rundgren. I searched the internet for Todd Rundgren and fell in love with him. He is probably the most talented man in the music business. He does it all. I am buying everything he has ever done. The man is amazing.!!!! I went to the Hard Rock Hotel in Hollywood, Florida recently and I can understand why they have a wall dedicated to him. My dream would be to meet him to tell him how wonderful he is. DEBBIE

5 out of 5 stars Masterpiece.......2006-08-06

An amazing double album by , at the time, a very young Todd. An interesting variety of songs. Todd can rock, he can croon, he can play bubble gum, he can jam, he can harmonize, he's got soul. "Hello it me" was a fav when I was young and it is still way up there today.

It so wrong that this ultra talented musician, song writer, performer, producer, and chance taker is not in the rock and roll hall of fame.

5 out of 5 stars excellent double album.......2006-05-23

todd rundgren really proves to be great in many different areas on this double album. he dabbles in a bunch of musical styles, writes some great songs with great melodies, produces everything, he's a one man band, he's a band leader, he's a one man carole king album, he gets heavy, and does some pretty weird experiments. one man... doing all of that! wow! listen and enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars LOVE THAT TODD.......2006-03-23

Todd Rundgren is definitely one of the best songwriter's ever. Pop, rock, jazz...the man can write anything. This double album is awesome and one of his best. Besides the obvious hits, Wolfman Jack is rockin' as is Black Maria. I recommend it.

Amazon.com essential recording

At its best, Prince's biggest seller of the '90s is an archetype of seemingly casual inspiration, thanks mainly to the ease tracks such as "Cream," "Money Don't Matter 2 Night," and "Willing and Able" exude. Of course, he's working as hard as ever, whether in a mellow groove or an aggressively funky one ("Gett Off"). Compared with the masterpiece Sign o' the Times, Diamonds and Pearls is a minor creation, but it's one for the long haul. --Rickey Wright

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A gem of an album!!!!.......2007-07-25

One of my favorite albums by Prince would definitely have to be Diamonds and Pearls. Every song is beautiful, especially Diamonds and Pearls. Prince is a musical genius. One of my favorite songs on the album is Insatiable. This album is a must have for anyone who calls themselves a Prince fan.

5 out of 5 stars Loves it!.......2007-05-23

This CD is fantastic! I mean it's Prince, what's not to love, right!

5 out of 5 stars High-Water Mark of NPG Phase.......2007-04-07

The first half of the album is really tight.(I used to listen to "side A" repeatedly on road trips.) And it's a sexy album too, rivaling Madonna's "Erotica" as the best sex/dance album of the early 90s. (My vision of a perfect college party would be going into a dark basement and everyone is dancing to this album and making out.) The only weak spots here are where Prince lets his New Power Generation bandmates shine: "Push" and "Jughead" are especially forgettable. Still, if you like this dirty & danceable phase of Prince's career, this album is much better than the other New Power Generation-era albums, mostly because it's so concise you can listen to it in one sitting. And there are moments of real Marvin Gaye-esque pathos in "Insatiable" and "Money Don't Matter 2 Night".

3 out of 5 stars Prince lite.......2006-04-05

In the early 90's, before the "alternative" music explosion, new jack swing and rap ruled the airwaves. And it's clear that, perhaps for the first time in his career, with "Diamonds and Pearls" Prince was catering at least somewhat to a mainstream audience. It's still a Prince album, to be sure, filled with the usual sexual bravado (on the slinky "Cream" and the throbbing, intoxicating "Gett Off") and mellow political criticism (on the somber "Money Don't Matter 2 Night", and the closer "Live 4 Love"). But the musical influences on the album never stray far from fairly conventional R&B. The album does take a slight detour with the jazzy "Strollin'", but it's a far cry from the sonic adventurousness of "Around the World in a Day", or even the preceeding "Graffiti Bridge". Just call it "Prince Lite".

5 out of 5 stars Diamonds and Pearls - A New Prince.......2005-12-18

The Year was 1991, Prince had released 2 consecutive albums that weren't that good. The Batman soundtrack and Graffiti Bridge to his movie that flopped. This time around he had found a new band "The Power Generation" and had added a new more hip hop influented sound. Basically, the days of catchy pop-funk were gone and he had joined the hip hop revolution. Read on to find out the result.

Diamonds and Pearls is a new chapter of Prince music, although we already had seen hints of that on Graffiti Bridge in 1990, it fully came out here. A very hip hop influented album recorded with new band the Power Generation. It does have other infleunts aswell and some songs still sound like in the late 80's but it's difficult to not point of the sound of hip hop he's added here, almost like a re-born Prince. The album "Diamonds and Pearls" was a big hit, and not surprising with all the good songs it has. Although his top albums of the 80's where slighyly better this got enough good songs to be called "Near Masterpiece".

"Thunder" is a psychedelic-funk song where the hook "Thunder - all thru the night,Promise to see Jesus in the morning light,Take my hand, it'll be alright, C'mon save your soul tonight" is defenitely about religion. "Daddy Pop" got hip hop all over it. If You like songs like "Get Off" you'll this one too. The title track is magnificient. It's a sensual ballad and yet somehwat pompous and duet with Rosie Gaines. Not surprising it was a big hit. "Cream" is one of those trademarks songs about sex, this funky number was another hit single. "Strollin" is a slow and sensual retro-soulish song where Prince sings in falsetto. It got these jazzy infleunces too. "Willing and Able" got gospel choirs in the back and accoustic guitars. A very good song on it's own right.

"Gett Off", with it's hip hop influented sound and introduction of NPG doesn't need further presentation. A big hit and a funky hip hopish number with very explicit lyrics. "Walk Don't Talk" is funny, and it's extremly catchy and it adds sound fom cars. "JugHeads" is hip hop sounding with raps and cool sounds, but it's one of the weaker songs here, but Prince raps on here. "Money Don't Matter Tonight" is a wonderful romantic ballad, it takes up issues like gambling, finding partners for invetsment and killing kids in order to control oil supply. The message is clear though, it's far more important to have a soul then to have cash. "Push" is another hip hop sounding sound, and like the other simular one's it's catchy but lacks a good hook. "Insatiable" is a great erotic slow jam with horns. Lush and beautiful. "Live 4 Love" is another hip hop sounding song, starts with an original robotic countdown. This one also offers a psychedelic guitar solo and a rap. A beautiful closer to a near-masterpiece.

Conclusion, Diamonds and Pearls was a new chapter in Prince's music, he joined the hip hop revolution of the early 90's where basically all hip music had a flavour of hip hop. However, not all songs are hip hop sounding, many still sound like the old Prince of the mid 80's. As a result this album is very rich and is full of variety. Psychedelics, Hip Hop, Romantic Soul and Pop. Perhaps it sound a little unfocused but in the end it's a fantastic album where Prince shows all of his sides, also a big commerical hit. Must have.

5 out of 5 stars Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

5 out of 5 stars Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

5 out of 5 stars Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

3 out of 5 stars Frank's view.......2006-08-19

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite Prince CDs........2006-09-16

I remember actually buying this CD many moons ago not even hearing any of the songs on it but man, it was a great purchase and completely blew away all of my expectations that I had for his 1992 'symbol' album. This is easily one of his greatest CDs of his career. "My Name Is Prince" proves this with a heavy driving rhythm, hard-edged lyrics and an extremely funky feel throughout. The album is very experimental and far removed from his more conventional sounding records but it ranks as one of my favorites of his.

4 out of 5 stars It keeps the story flowing..........2006-08-31

It seems that Prince decided to be a storyteller with this release featuring Mayte throughout the CD. But with each story, it flows into one another with spoken "segues" in between the songs. Also features Kirstie Alley as the frustrated reporter, possibly echoing Prince's real-life evasion of reporters! Very enjoyable as it includes the hits 7, SEXY M.F., & DAMN U!

5 out of 5 stars Before Prince found his...well, whatever he found..........2006-06-25

Ever since Prince "converted" there's been a slightly subdued "edge" to his music. The "love symbol album," as this one is commonly referred, shows the singer at his most enigmatic, hedonistic, self-centered, controversial, and, to a certain extent, spiritual, than anything he produced up to that time, and, perhaps, more than his releases in the last decade. When he announces "My name is Prince" in the first track, the listener should be prepared. There is truly no one else like the guy from Minneapolis.

With backing on vocals and instrumentation by The New Power Generation, Prince has never sounded better and clocking in at just under seventy minutes, there's a lot of good music to behold.

The album comes with a "parental advisory" for the album's explicit lyrics and that disclaimer is warranted. Even though many of the songs are populated by profanities, they don't detract from the songs. In fact, unlike others who need a "cuss word" or two to supply a shock, Prince's songs are enhanced by a zinger here or there. But, mind you, the subject matter is definitely for the adult and caution should be advised when playing around "little ears."

Highlights include the aforementioned first cut, the James Brown-like "Sexy M.F.,", "The Max," "Blue Light," "I Wanna Meet with U," "Damn U," "The Flow," the gospel-influenced "7", and "And God Created Woman."

The entire album is a showcase for the funkiness of an artist that has been influential for close to three decades...with many more to come.

4 out of 5 stars It's About The Songs,Stupid!.......2006-05-31

I always have been an admirer of Prince and his music and this is an CD,I must admit I always have trouble talking as a whole. It's a rock opera with a lot of obscure spiritual references. This is not part two of 'Lovesexy' though-the arrangements are far less jazzy and dissonant.Nonetheless Prince tries to do a lot on this album.Especially on "My Name Is Prince" this album is very sonic and noisy. For such a trendsetter Prince spends an awful lot of time following the hip-hop/new jack thing and in this day and age some parts of this album sound painfully dated. Some songs are pretty good such as "3 Chains O Gold" and the frenetic "The Max" but both showcase one problem-both songs turn into rap midway and don't really need to.For ballad purposes the better song is "The Morning Papers".There is a lot of variety besides the heavy hip hop experimentation such as two great rock tunes-"The Continental" and "7",the latter being one of his standards. As far as funk tunes one was a hit-the somewhat rap oriented "Sexy MF",which actually works very well and the more bare bones "The Sacrifice Of Victor",with it's nostolgic take on civil rights. If this album had been wittled down to an album containg nine or 10 of the best songs here, including most the ones mentioned above this would have been a classic Prince album. But due to artist's tendency in the early 90's to fill every available space on a CD this ended up being an obscure rock 'soap opera' that features too much information and music that distracts from some good seperate songs that are wonderful. In my opinion not exactly the highest point in Prince's career.

5 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece.......2006-05-28

I signed up to this web site to pay this album its just due. Largely overlooked, this CD was one of Prince's crowning acheivements. If 1999 was a sign of what was to come with Purple Rain, then Diamonds and Pearls was Prince warming for the Symbol album. The album finds Prince sucessfully covering more musical ground in 75 minutes than most artists would attempt in their entire career. There's something here for everyone - Rock (The Continental), Dance (Melt With U), Reggae (Blue Light), Funk (The Maxx, Sexy MF, My Name is Prince) and everything in between (Damn U, Arrogance and Sacrafice of Vistor). Oh and if you need a hit, this the album where the single 7 is from. Each song has its own distinct personality and so well written that they stay in your head after just one listen. I must admit, this is not my favorite album (that title goes to his 1987 classic Sign O' The Times), but its one that shouldn't be overlooked. When people ask me which Prince album they should try first, I always recommend this one as it can not be categorized... most people should find much of this album appealing. He trades in the raunch of the 80's for style and sophistication. The album has it's sexy moments, but they are much more subtle. If you are a music fan, but not a Prince fan - this is an album you should check out!

5 out of 5 stars A must!!.......2006-03-03

I'll keep this review brief. This CD is nothing less than a Blues guitar statement. One like few others! An absolute must for Blues fans, period! Five stars are not enough for this CD!

5 out of 5 stars can't get enough of it.......2005-02-12

Wow. I just came across this CD for real cheap, and boy was I glad I got it. I have listened to lots of blues players of different types, and the guitar of Albert King is amazing, especially on this disc. I have his In Session CD live with SRV, which was a really strong CD, but this particular CD presents a better sound of his guitar, in my opinion. It sounds sweeter, more well-rounded, powerful, diverse, and dead-on. I really love Albert King's work, and I always wish songs like "Blues Power" and "Blues at Sunrise" were much much longer because this type of slower blues has the sweetest licks. Get this CD. It radiates such warm, positive energy.

5 out of 5 stars BEST BLUES I've heard in MONTHS !.......2004-10-17

I just unwrapped this CD this afternoon, popped into the player and ... it's EXCELLENT! What an inspiration Mr. King must have been to Clapton et al. Each track on this one SMOKES BIG TIME ! The guitar is perfect, raw, loud and captivating. This is what I've been looking for since I expired all of Michael Bloomfield's stuff. If you love Bloomfield, you'll love this and vice versa.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome, but Wed & Thurs in SF even better!!!!.......2004-03-24

Albert is THE master!! This CD is truly powerful guitar playing and great vocals! A must for ALL Blues and rock fans.
As great as Live Wire / Blues Power is, it is very misleading to say that these were the best songs of the live SF shows. ALL songs were great, and the "leftovers" that were placed on the Wednesday night in San Francisco and Thursday night in San Francisco were just as good. All three CD's form the greatest collection of the sweetest guitar playing ever!!!! He was the TRUE master. It's amazing how few paople know about this secret pearl of music.

5 out of 5 stars king of the flying v's and more...........2003-12-09

This is a seminal album....one of the finest live concert recordings ever, irrespective of genre. I saw King Albert twice at the Fillmore East in the old days [this one was recorded at Fillmore West], and this CD [or my old vinyl LP for that matter] captures him in all his live glory. Albert was a consummate professional who hadn't played large venues for the most part in his career when Bill Graham tapped him for the Fillmores, and he succeeded in pleasing [no, knocking out!!] audiences and turning them on to the blues....if you're counting your coins and wondering which next blues CD purchase will best serve your budget [or even if you're made of money and don't care either way but love the blues] - BUY THIS ONE!!!

5 out of 5 stars Stewy in Music City.......2007-07-12

This is truly one of the best albums of the early 70's. I am a big fan of CHICAGO but this collection and "Bump City" should have blown them right off the charts. The fabulous horn section played on many other artist's records, but listen to "What is Hip?" and hear them in their own element knock it out of the park! These guys are the real deal.

3 out of 5 stars Tower of Power Self Titled CD.......2006-07-05

Although this is not a current selection (which actually was origianlly recorded back in 1973), Tower of Power will remain one of funk/R&B's premier bands which used a massive horn section to highlight their work.

On this CD, the noteworthy "What is Hip?" stands out as their rocking, syncopated, break-induced tunes. AOR lit into this one, as well as the soulful "So Very Hard To Go." Both these individual tunes are worth the price of the CD, but it doesn't stop there.

AOR never quite latched onto "Soul Vaccination" but that doesn't detract from the signature sound of ToP. The horn section is what drove ToP, and to this day I cannot think of another band that accomplished what ToP was able to do, when it was able to do it.

Tower of Power still receives airplay, but on a much smaller scale, considering this style of music is now considered as what ToP said in their song "What is Hip?": "What you think might really be passe'."

It is unfortunate that ToP is not still riding the airwaves in it's former glory, but since times and tastes have changed with the generations, we can only hope that ToP will remain an icon to older boomers who remember hard-driving funk and R&B.

5 out of 5 stars This Time Is Real.......2006-05-09

If I may make up a word, then, this is FUNKTIFICATION TO THE HIGHEST LEVEL!!!! While listening to "Clever Girl" on an online radio station, I fell in love with the song. The vocalist was clear, the horns rocked (I am a Trumpet player, so, the screaming Trumpets grabbed my attention!!). I did some research and found out the group was the same group to release "You're Still A Young Man", just with a new singer, Lenny Williams. I found this CD and haven't stopped playing it!!! I would recommend this CD to ANYONE!!! Oh, and you will love Tower Of Power's trademark, THAT MONSTER HORN SECTION!!!!! Just listen to "Soul Vaccination" and you will do as Lenny Williams suggest. Get in line to get yours because I got mine!!

5 out of 5 stars See them Live!.......2005-11-26

I won't regurgitate what is written already, this is just a kick-a** album!

I really want to add they still tour, usually jazz clubs, and are a not-to-be-missed act. If you ain't moving when "the Tower" is groovin' -- you dead.

5 out of 5 stars Funk that's as hot and danceable as it gets.......2005-08-04

This is one helluva band. And really greased on this early 70s gem. Go get it. It's wonderful.
