This is probably my favorite Phil Collins album. Most of the songs here are easy-going and calm to listen to. Perfect for listening to on a long trip. Listening to it on a short trip wouldn't hurt either. Or just letting the music put you to sleep at night is good to do, too.

This two-record set on one CD collects 16 Paul Simon hits from his solo career after Simon & Garfunkel without much rhyme or reason. The selections are not in chronological order and several of the cuts are oddly chosen. Those minor points aside, there are some landmark works presented on these discs. "Hearts and Bones" is a brilliant depiction of a crumbling love affair, while "Slip Slidin' Away" uncovers the hurt of divorce and middle age with a groove that's pure mid-'70s decadent. Simon's infatuation with rhythm is all over the place, from the reggae of "Mother and Child Reunion" to the South African bounce of "You Can Call Me Al." --Rob O'Connor

Paul Simon not only wrote words and music, he performed his own songs too. His passionate voice displays a quiet yet potent masculine strength to it on this album. The CD gives us most of his very best from the years 1971 through 1986. The sound is great and this CD ably demonstrates Paul's prowess as a musician.

The CD opens with the reggae ballad entitled "Mother And Child Reunion." Although the title might suggest a happy event, Paul sings from the perspective of a man who might not be too comfortable with this reunion. "Me And Julio Down By The Schoolyard" is a playful, upbeat song even though the person Paul sings of is in trouble with his parents and probably the law as well. Nevertheless, Paul's character remains unrepentant for any errors in his judgment. Indeed, he plans to run away with his buddy Julio so that he can be free from his parents and the law.

"Something So Right" boasts a beautiful melody and Paul delivers this song with great sensitivity; and "St. Judy's Comet" is a touching ballad about a father putting his child to bed. The words and music for "St. Judy's Comet" make this song a masterpiece.

Other classic and famous ballads on this retrospective CD include "Kodachrome;" "Have A Good Time" with its laid back musical arrangement and exquisite lyrics and "Still Crazy After All These Years" which tells the story of two former lovers meeting by chance and spending some time together. "Still Crazy After All These Years" sports a wonderful instrumental segment between verses, too.

"50 Ways To Leave Your Lover" certainly got its share of air time when it was released. Paul meets a woman and she encourages him to leave his current lover even if he doesn't become her own boyfriend. The melody stuns you with its sophisticated arrangement. The numerous "ways to leave your lover" are presented in a sing-song manner that is in sharp contrast to the sadness of a couple's breakup.

"Late In The Evening" also sports a reggae melody with a great backup chorus; and "Slip Slidin' Away" explores the experience of a couple's breakup with dreams of what could have been instead of the sadness of their failed relationship. In addition, "Hearts And Bones" has a great musical arrangement--love that guitar!

The CD closes with the famous "You Can Call Me Al." Amazon correctly notes that this number has a South African beat to it. The song sports a catchy, upbeat melody as it explores the good and bad of relationships.

The liner notes spend too much time on song credits. I would have liked an essay about Paul and his work but that is a minor disappointment.

Paul Simon remains one of the most successful songwriters of our time. Paul Simon's words and music explored universal topics relating to basic human emotions and everyday experiences. Paul will never be forgotten; his work will live on for quite some while to come. If you liked this CD I recommend other Paul Simon CDs including The Paul Simon Anthology and Surprise. Fans of rock and pop will also enjoy this CD.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite.......2007-02-06

This is my all-time favorite album. Ever.

Although I only ever listen to half the songs on it, it's not the quantity that counts here. It's the quality.

The fact that Paul wrote both lyrics and music for every song on this wonderful album is a testament to his incredible talent in both those areas. The unique lyrics to songs such as Call Me Al, Slip Slidin' Away, and Me And Julio Down By The Schoolyard are what set him apart from more mundane, cookie-cutter lyricists. They push him into the category of poet. And, the music is equally as refreshing, even after all these years. His unique phrasing also sets him apart.

The variety on this album makes it one I never tire of listening to. A definite gem, and the prize of my collection.

Based on Hans Christian Andersen's tale The Princess and the Pea, Once Upon a Mattress opened in May 1959 and was a solid success, if not a huge blockbuster. It did well enough, in any case, to warrant a 1997 revival starring Sarah Jessica Parker. The show was far from revolutionary, but it provided a really fun vehicle for a cast of top stage personalities, including black actress Jane White, who played Queen Aggravain (a part originally written for comedienne Nancy Walker) in whiteface. But of course, Once Upon a Mattress's heart and soul was Carol Burnett, who, in her Broadway debut created the part of Princess Winnifred and delivered two of Mary Rodgers's best songs, the hilarious "Shy" and the spunky "Happily Ever After," which sounds a bit like Jule Styne at his most rhythmic. Burnett's timing and performance remain as sharp as they were 40 years ago. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

I've really enjoyed this CD. I only wish the play was available on DVD.

Loved Carol Burnett then and love her now. This original cast CD is a lovely trip down memory lane.

5 out of 5 stars Nothing like the original -- .......2006-01-30

No offense to any of the subsequent "Freds" but Carol Burnett OWNS this role. The recording is as fresh and funny as anything being done today and this is the version musical theatre fans should have in their library. Get it.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2006-01-22

My school did this musical last year (Spring 2005) and I had never heard of it before, so I bought both the Revial and the Original Cast Recordings. Fell in love. I was Sir Harry and loved both songs that I sang in. In my opinion, those are the two best songs in the entire musical, but then again, I'm biased.

Once Upon A Mattress OCR is by far the best out there. Don't get me wrong, the Revival Cast did a wonderful job (soundtrack at least) But There is something about Carol Burnett. She was meant to sing be Fred. But one thing that I didn't like is that "The Minstrel, the Jester & I" wasn't in this recording. But that is really the only problem I had with this.

My fav songs include:
In a Little While (because I sang it)
Yesterday I Loved You (again, I sang it)
Many Moons Ago
Shy

Would I recomend this CD? YES I WOULD!! I would shout it from the rooftops that people should by this CD! It's a funny, quaint little musical that people need to know about. I LOVE IT!

5 out of 5 stars I saw the original on Broadway.......2005-12-19

Once Upon a Mattress was one of the first Broadway shows that I ever saw and I was totally mesmorized and laughed so hard that my side hurt. Carol Burnett was the perfect person to play Fred and it was one of those magical performances that stays with you for a lifetime. The original cast album captures the fun and spirit of the show.

Later during the run of the show a friend of mine joined the chorus and when we talked about the experience, he told me that the joy that was on stage was similar to that felt by the cast and that was apparent on the album. They especially liked working with Ms. Burnett as she was a giving and caring actress.

I recommend this album to anyone who wants to spend some time just feeling good.

Amazon.com essential recording

"The Power of Love" was Celine Dion's first chart-topping song in America, but it was a career-defining moment in more ways than one. It established her as a dependable hitmaker and also fixed the pattern of her biggest successes to come--songs that begin with delicate melodies and spare instrumentation and build into big, powerful productions over which Dion's incomparable vocals hit stratospheric heights. Dion attempts other directions on The Colour of My Love, such as the light dance-pop of "Misled" and "Everybody's Talkin' My Baby Down," but they don't ring as true as her duet with Clive Griffin in "When I Fall in Love" (from the film Sleepless in Seattle) and the title track. --Daniel Durchholz

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars there are moments.......2007-06-18

There was a time when it seemed there would be no getting past Celine Dion's overwhelming voice. Vocal music would end, then and there, along with the 20th century and the millennium. No higher musical peaks worthy of scaling appeared on the horizon.

This album was a watershed in the career of a woman who sang so strongly and then appeared to disappear suddenly from the recording world. From the opening lines, 'The whispers in the morning ....', Celine put us on notice that her diminutive size in no way correlates to the sound that flows with what looks like effortless ease--artists know that it is nothing of the kind--from the skinny songstress.

Some found the highly produced quality of this cd worthy of their scorn. But in the tradition of big stage music, Celine's style is - unapologetically - just what it is. When she announced her transition to a grueling feet-on-the-ground commitment to Vegas, no one could be too surprised. She sings from the stage even when there is no stage.

It is difficult to choose the best track on this CD. Certainly 'Next Plane Out' would Compete'. Though laurels may go in the end to 'Love Doesn't Ask Why', that piece--an existential untruth but a marvelous piece of singing--would have to edge out 'I Remember L.A.':

'I remember L.A.'
Seems a lifetime ago
We were stars on Sunset Boulevard
What a move we made

There were days in the sun
That have stayed forever young
Nights when passion was invincible
We thought love would never die

There were moments in that lifetime
That my heart still replays
There were minutes, there were hours
There were days
There are moments I still love you
That same way
When I remember L.A.'

Who can not place themselves in Celine's L.A. with a lover who is now just a memory, though - in moments - a living presence? The almost imperceptible passage from 'were' to 'are' as the heart replays tells the whole story.

It is in conjuring up the colours of love, as she did with such surging prowess, that Celine carved out a place in our memory. A fine album.

5 out of 5 stars Two thumbs up.......2007-02-28

I never listened to Celine Dion's music much. I happened to check this album out from the library and had to go out and buy it after it was returned. This album has just the right mix of sad, slow love songs and up-beat ones. I would buy all of her CD's simply based on this one.

4 out of 5 stars Good Cd....Love/ Romantic Ballads.............2006-12-24

I am a die-hard Celine fan and yes, this cd is mostly romantic/love songs ballads but this Cd does have some variety a little pop and dance ballads (song choice is why its 4/5 stars because there could have been more variety, some of the songs sound the same*).

Yes most of the songs are sappy and that is why a lot of people don't like this cd, but love is what this cd is all about.

Just to point out a few songs on the Cd:

Refuse to Dance(a good violin ballad in background) sounds like A Madonna song, its kind of a dark deep song.

The best song is The Power of Love, Celine's vocals are amazing! It has more of a rock edge to it.

The Colour of My Love is the most romantic song and if you a romantic at heart it could make you cry (some would also find is sappy/cheesy as well).

*Think Twice(excellent guitar ballad in the background), *Next Plane Out and *Only One Road, are very romantic ballads just as *Colour of My Love. All are good.

Remember L.A. is a sad song, remembering back to a previous relationship.

Anyway, this is a good cd to add to your collection just for the Power Of Love alone (the original verison).

WARNING if you are not into sappy songs this cd isn't for you...

After listening to it for awhile it might grow on you (I first thought it was ok and then each time i listened to it I liked it better and better).

That's all for this Album..

2 out of 5 stars Step in the wrong direction.......2005-12-20

I love Celine Dion's music. Even though Mariah Carey is my all-time favorite I still love Celine's incredible voice. However she does have her misses... like this album. I am a huge fan of her Self-titled, "Falling Into You" and "Let's Talk About Love" albums. Unfortuantely I didn't enjoy this. It didn't seem like it was from the heart. it seemed like it was made for mass appeal like her debut album. The only songs I really liked was "The Power of Love"--one of her best singles. I'm being VERY generous for giving this 2 stars. The only reason I'm doing it is because of the "Power of Love." I'd reccomend "Celine Dion", "Falling Into You" or "Let's Talk About Love" over this anyday. D-

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant!.......2005-09-14

Since it contains six tunes that Richie wrote and performed as lead singer of the Commodores, the title for this collection may be technically a little misleading. That said, those who appreciate Richie's instantly recognizable vocal style are unlikely to complain about the inclusion of such pop standards as "Three Times a Lady," "Still," and "Easy." Maybe it's the passage of time, but Richie's solo work sounds more emotionally satisfying than the hits he had with the group: "Hello" is still eminently soulful and "Penny Lover" has a warm and cozy feel. "Endless Love," Richie's memorable duet with Diana Ross, shows that both singers can truly deliver powerhouse vocal performances, while the oft-overlooked Commodores hit "Sweet Love" is a welcome addition to this collection. Richie may not have been in favor chart-wise for a while, but this package is a reminder of the contribution he's made as a contemporary writer of classic love songs. --David Nathan

Lionel Richie is the greates singer of love songs. I love to hear his voice. He has this way about making a woman feel good about herself in a song. I love the old stuff.

5 out of 5 stars Love this CD.......2007-01-17

Lionel Ritchie is the man! I find myself singing to one song after another. Great listen for when I'm in a mellow mood...

5 out of 5 stars One of the best songwriters of all times.......2005-08-28

No one comes close when it comes to writing love songs like Lionel. He's so gifted. The best song (one of the best - there are so many), is Still. It's so beautiful, you could almost cry. What a talent.

5 out of 5 stars Relationship Music.......2005-08-20

What could you say about Lionel Richie when he started his career with The Commodores and later solo. All fourteen songs were written by him which were all chart toppers of its time. Let alone his music crossed genres over to country from pop / R&B tunes. Only those in relationships that's worth fighting for will find this LP of all love songs pleasurable. This has feelings and depths with the arrangements and vocal range of Lionel.

5 out of 5 stars A Tue Classic.......2005-05-08

How could you give this anything less than a 5? I'm a 23 year old college student who listens to all types of music, but this is a classic that transcends age. Every track on this CD is awesome and relaxing, that is rare now days. You can just put the CD in and hit play, lay back an enjoy a one of a kind album. Do your self a favor and buy this, you'll love it.

There was a time, before Karen Carpenter was born, when most American female popular singers, even the black ones, sounded a lot like the way she would one day sound. The music of singer-drummer Carpenter and her piano-playing brother Richard came to be called soft rock, but it's really just good, straight American pop. This CD, released in March 1998, is a collection of greatest hits, with a special emphasis on romance. Paul Williams, Burt Bacharach, Sam Lewis, and Victor Young provide lovely melodies, and Carpenter's expressive voice makes each song genuinely affecting. --Stanley Booth

5 out of 5 stars The Voice......................2007-04-17

When I was 21 (1974),it wasn't cool to like The Carpenters. It just wasn't. Although, secretly, I loved Karen Carpenter's magnificent voice. So good, I would just sit there alone, and cry.Picture a guy, doing that. When Herb Alpert first heard it, he knew it. That girl was GOOD. I have dearly missed her, since 1983. Nobody since has even come close to Karen, and what she could do with a song.

4 out of 5 stars Over-produced!.......2007-04-15

As much as I adore Karen Carpenter's voice, I'm just shocked by what's been done to it on this collection. It's almost obscured by the multi-layered production and arrangements that made me wonder if Richard had re-mixed this album for quad (I was listening on headphones)! Too many electronic enhancements on her vocals.

I would have given this collection 5 stars, but the remixing just ruined it for me. I can remember back when the albums were actually sonically relaxing. Now they sound as if Richard has too much time on his hands.

Let Karen's vocals shine, please, and leave the electronics off!

5 out of 5 stars She is the Best of ALL Time.......2007-02-20

The most Wonderful music ever put together on one CD..............

5 out of 5 stars Love Songs by The Carpenters.......2006-07-16

The CD was received within the alloted time and was in excellent condition. This is a great album and we highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in their music.

4 out of 5 stars I love Carpenters.......2006-06-06

Carpenter are a legend. They are the greatest brother/sister duo I have ever listened to. They are my favorite. I own only two of their compilation CDs. One is this one and the other is GOld. They are a real treasure i must say. My all time favorite is Top of the world, Good bye to love, Rainy days and Mondays, Sing. I tell you everything in this collection is a gem. Not one can be compared to the other. Even though these songs are decades old they still hold that freshness. Karen Carpenter was one in a million. Who knows what the Carpenters would have acheived if they were still alive today. Trust me you must own atleast one cd by carpenters if not more

Our Kind of Soul, the follow-up to 2003's VH1-propelled Do It for Love, is mostly a can't-miss proposition: Daryl Hall's smooth, expressive voice, synonymous with the Philly soul sound, is so well suited to this material that it feels shrink-wrapped overtop. "Can't Get Enough of Your Love," the Barry White classic, is given a breezy makeover (and, maybe more impressively considering that most artists wouldn't touch it, not mangled); Teddy Pendergrass' "Love TKO" is dusted off and tinkered with till it takes on a signature H&O sound; and "After the Dance," one of Marvin Gaye's most cryptic compositions, comes across like a solved mystery--there's a gentleness and a reverie in the reading will prompt thoughtful listeners to return to it more than a few times. That said, a couple of these covers--the O'Jays "Used to Be My Girl" and Aretha Franklin's "Rock Steady"--seem cursory, and the duo can count on a cranky contingent decrying their lack of fresh material. But the strength of three songs introduced here should keep them at bay. First track "Let Love Take Control" gutsily and convincingly glides into Four Tops' "Standing in the Shadows of Love," "Soul Violins" strikes notes at once heartfelt and spontaneous, and "Don't Turn Your Back" has the classic Hall & Oates marks of their-kind-of-soul songs like "Out of Touch." --Tammy La Gorce

5 out of 5 stars Great renditions of some soul standards.......2007-07-29

This is a great album, well sung, well produced. Good choice of songs. These guys are aging like a fine wine - just getting better and better.

5 out of 5 stars Gettin Back to the Basics.......2007-05-26

This is their best work in a long time. They recorded a lot of classic soul songs. What makes this collection so unique is they recorded them close to how the songs were originally written. They use acoustic guitars and violins. Of course they put the classic H&O style. In many cases their version is better than the original.

There are a couple of new songs on the CD also. I like those also. I notice the boys are getting back to their roots the older they get. I would give this CD a 10 out of 10. With the best song being Soul Violins. If you like soul music this is a must for your collection.

The more I listen to this CD the more I like it! There is nothing better than sweet soul music done with acoustic instruments. I started reading the cover and found the CD was recorded in 5 weeks at Daryl's home in the Bahamas!

The background vocals are amazing. I just love the way they harmonize with each other. Daryl still has his pipes and can still hit those really high notes. He does a great rendition of the Al Green classic "Still in Love".

I heard an interview with John Oates one time were he said "he brings a certain shortness to the group". I think he is selling himself short! (Ha I made a pun) His rendition of "Ooh Child" is remarkable. It's like the song was written for him.

I noticed that on many of the songs some of the lyrics and the key were changed. At first I had a problem with this, because I am used to hearing the songs done a certain way. I get it now! They took these classic R&B songs and made them Hall & Oates songs. This was done intentionally and I have to say it works.

5 out of 5 stars Timeless, Ageless, Music.......2007-05-12

When I heard #3 played on the radio, I looked everywhere for the CD. I recognized D.Hall's voice right away. This is MUSIC,timeless, ageless talent and style. Thank you AMAZON.com and Thanks to Hall and Oates.

5 out of 5 stars Daryl Still knows what Soul is all about. .......2007-04-25

Hall and Oats were one of the only Blue Eye Soul groups I believed understood what soul is about. Over the years I haven't heard much from them. I just happen to catch the concert on tv, it looked like it was at some big bar in the suburbs at first. But I understand it was in the Bahama's.
I was very delighted to hear that Daryl Hall still can sing. The songs were not songs from their music but covers of various R&B songs from people such as Gladys Knght and the O'Jays and the Four Tops. and one or two newer original songs. Whoever said their version of the O'Jays, She Use to Be My Girl was the worst song he ever heard must not of listened to any of the 10,000 cd's he has. It was fine, I get nervous when people sing covers of great R&B songs. Most do it pretty horrendously. Not Daryl Hall even 34 years later the man can still sing and he does a very good job singing that song. Surprisingly he took on sacred cows like Neither One of Us, by Gladys Knight and he was excellent. He did not try to over sing Gladys, he made the song his own. He sang Rock Steady like he has been singing it all of his life.
Same with Marvin Gaye's song.
Again I will say Hall and Oates were the only Blue Eye Soul group particulary Daryl Hall who knows what soul is about and that is why they were able to tackle songs most singers would sound foolish singing. This CD proves it.

1 out of 5 stars 'Used ta be my girl' gets my vote for worst song of all time!.......2007-03-13

I consider myself a music expert or something close to it. I own close to 10,000 albums. I say this because I hope that you will listen to some very good advice. Do not buy this album. Do not borrow it from the library. If you see it in the record store, look away as fast as you can. 'She used to be my girl' is the WORST song I have ever heard. That is taking into consideration all of the generic bubblegum pop, 80's hair metal, disco, and rock blands that I have had the misfortune to hear. To describe it as infinitely dreadful would be giving it too much credit. 'The O'Jays' should be ashamed and embarrassed that they are responsible for this miserable catastrophe of a 'song.' Daryl Hall & John Oates simply take 'worst' to a whole new low. Absolutely horrible! Hearing this song is like being forced to eat cow dung while suspended by your toe nails above a steaming pit of molten lead. Please, do not buy this album! (Rating: No stars whatsoever!)

5 out of 5 stars Women dig it.......2001-04-04

My friend got this cd for my birthday and it works great! All the ladies that hear these soothing love songs totally dig it... and then they dig me. Even though this is a 2 cd set, the music usually runs out before we're done. I with they had a volume 2 or something.

Thanks, JenH.

5 out of 5 stars Definitely the best love album!!!.......1999-09-09

I bought this a year ago when it was first released, and I still find myself listeneing to it everyday, and falling asleep to it everynight. The ballads on here are beautiful and touching. Especially,"I'm Not in Love"by 10cc & "I Wanna Know What Love is" by Foreigner. I recommend this album to everyone!

4 out of 5 stars Excellent as compilations go.......1999-03-03

Excellent selection of songs is transformed into a must have by the inclusion of the FULL versions of these songs. I have purchased many compilations from Amazon, but this is one of a select few that actually contain the full versions of the songs (with the notable exception of Nights in White Satin): 10cc's "I'm Not in Love" is 6 minutes, Stephanie Mills "Never Knew Love Like This Before", and Peaches & Herb's "Reunited" is 5:42. I only wish it had "Sara Smile" by Hall & Oates. Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Air Supply rocks.......2006-03-01

I can't get enough of Russell's voice. This is a great CD. Songs like Where Did the Feeling Go, Daybreak, Without You, Unchained Melody and Always are wonderful. I play it over and over and never get tired of it.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive collection.......2005-04-08

Air supply were much bigger in America, where they had a string of big hits, than in Britain, where they had just two hits - All out of love made number eleven and Even the nights are better was a minor hit. Both of those made the top five in America, as did Lost in love, Every woman in the world, The one that you love, Here I am, Sweet dreams and Making love out of nothing at all. They had other hits in America too, including Two less lonely people in the world, Young love (an original song, not a cover of the rock'n'roll classic) and Just as I am, all included here.

Their last American hit was Power of love, the song that was originally a massive hit in several European countries for Jennifer Rush (including number one in Britain where it charted at the same time as a completely different song with the same title by Huey Lewis) and was later an American hit for Laura Branigan. Celine Dion revived the song in the nineties and had a huge hit with it in both Britain and America.

All the above-mentioned hits can be found on the first CD of this collection. The second CD includes the best of the rest of their music, showing that there was more to Air Supply's music than just the hits.

For those of you that enjoy romantic pop music, this collection should be just ideal. Fans of Bread in particular should enjoy this.

5 out of 5 stars Lost In "Forever Love".......2004-04-21

This 2-disc Asian import is the most complete summary of Air Supply's ouvere, rendering "The Definitive Collection" and "Ultimate Air Supply" redundant by including all the band's Top 40 hits(Lost In Love,All Out Of Love,The One That You Love,Every Woman In The World,Sweet Dreams,Here I Am(Just When I Thought I Was Over You),Even The Nights Are Better,Making Love Out Of Nothing At All,Two Less Lonely People In The World,Young Love,Just As I Am)plus two of their last charting US singles(The Power Of Love,Lonely Is The Night)and those that were big hits in Asia(Goodbye,The Way I Feel). It also has choice album cuts from the Arista(Tonite,Chances,Come What May,Taking The Chance,I Can Wait Forever) and Giant(Too Sentimental,Always,Daybreak,Once,Yours Truly)periods that are on a pair with their biggest hits and has three fine songs from the impossible to find 1988 Russell Hitchcock solo album. It also has insightful track-by-track essays by Graham and Russell, assorted photos and lovely layout-and-cover art as well. While a fan favorite or two might be missing(i.e Keeping The Love Alive,Someone),"Forever Love" should for the most part satisfy both casual fans looking for a soild introduction to the 1980's soft-pop duo and diehard fans looking to complete their Air Supply collections.

4 out of 5 stars Most complete collection.......2004-03-17

Love 'em or hate 'em, no one can argue that Air Supply wasn't one of the most prolific and popular soft-rock presences on the airwaves during the first half of the 80's decade. This group, or duo technically, of Russell Hitchcock and Graham Russell had their lush and sometimes over-the-top productions consistantly occupy the top-5 for three years. Their tunes continued to appear on the charts less consistantly in the mid-80's but there's no denying the legacy they left. As popular as they were and still are to many, there are almost as many who despise their often syrupy, Spectorian in splendor, odes to love. They are second only perhaps to the Carpenters in the degree of love-hate they elicit from music listeners both now and in their heyday on the charts. If you are not a fan, then no collection of Air Supply's works would be of interest but for those who connect with these guys' music, selecting from the myriad of CD's available is the challange. For those seeking a "greatest hits"-type package, there are many available, however in spite of the parade of domestic collections, titles such as "ultimate" and "definitive' notwithstanding, there are still no truly complete domestic packages. For whatever reason, every domestic collection leaves off at least one of their charted hits yet with 18 or so tracks available on a CD, one wonders who is making these decisions to drop legitimate singles for b-sides and the like. This Taiwanese import is one of the few packages that does in fact contain all the American top-100 hits, including the domestically-evasive "Lonely Is The Night", Air Supply's last charting single. Beyond the American hit singles within the 36 tracks on two discs offered here are album cuts, Asian hits, a few Russell Hitchcock solo tracks and a few cuts from their "Greatest Hits Live" album. All in all, this represents about the best overview of Air Supply's music. Add in its decent sound quality and the substantial liner notes booklet with song-by-song commentary by Russell and Hitchcock, and you have the best overall package for these icons of 80's soft-rock and pop.

4 out of 5 stars EZ listening from EJ.......2007-07-04

Calling this "Love Songs" is something of a misnomer. I would be hard pressed to call "Daniel" or "Candle In The Wind" love songs as much as they are romantic ballads. But as a collection of Adult Contemporary hits from Elton John, this is a good greatest hits. Elton and Bernie Taupin were always masters of popcraft, and when they took aim at a ballad, they were often the best of their time.

"Love Songs," released by MCA just before Elton switched labels to Island Records, covers material from 1970 ("Your Song") to 1985 ("Blessed"). There were two so-so new songs, and also the hits from "The Lion King." (Saving you from buying the lackluster soundtrack.) What "Love Songs" doesn't do is present the full spectrum of Elton; instead of "Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting," you get "Blue Eyes." If all you want is Elton's pleasantries, this will do fine. Otherwise, I'd suggest "Rocket Man: Number Ones," "Elton John - Greatest Hits 1970-2002" or even "To Be Continued...."

5 out of 5 stars So much more than mindless muzak--BRAVO, ELTON JOHN !!!.......2007-06-04

This CD of just a few of Elton John's love ballads gives us a collection of some of the very best love songs of all time. When Elton sings these songs, you listen--and you listen closely, too, because only Elton could deliver these rich and stunning numbers with a flair all his own.

The CD track set begins with "Can You Feel The Love Tonight;" this ballad is from the soundtrack to the movie The Lion King. Elton's voice is rich, warm and full of masculine sensitivity. Elton's piano playing leaves nothing to be desired; and the lush musical arrangement features a sublime backup chorus, too. "The One" celebrates the joy Elton feels when he has found the perfect lover for him; again the musical arrangement glistens like gold. The overall effect of both "Can You Feel The Love Tonight" and "The One" produces a heavenly effect that I rarely enjoy from any singer. Great!

Then there's the classic Elton John ballad, "Daniel." "Daniel" gives Elton the opportunity to sing about the sadness he feels when his man has left him. The percussion enhances the beauty of this number; and Elton's voice is in top form here as it is throughout the CD. "Someone Saved My Life Tonight" changes gears as Elton now sings about how relieved he feels to realize--before it's too late--that his love affair will never bring him true happiness. The lyrics reflect great judgment and Elton's voice exudes a type of sensitivity that showcases his remarkable talent.

"Your Song" is probably my favorite love ballad on his CD; the straightforward lyrics require no interpretation and Elton sings this straight from the bottom of his heart. The musical arrangement stuns you with its beauty; and the piano and strings are well used in the musical arrangement. "Your Song" always moves me deeply.

Other golden nuggets on this album include the marvelous live duet Elton does with George Michael entitled "Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me" and the sublime "Blue Eyes" which deals with the sadness Elton's woman feels when he needs to go away from her for a while. "Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word" explores the heartbreak Elton feels as he realizes a love he wants so badly will never exist. There is a live recording of "Candle In The Wind," too; this song deals with misunderstanding other people using Marilyn Monroe as an example. Excellent!

"You Can Make History (Young Again)" stuns me with its beauty; and the CD ends fittingly with "Circle Of Life" from the movie entitled The Lion King. "Circle Of Life" provides the album with an especially strong ending.

The liner notes give you the lyrics and the song credits; and the cover picture of Elton is excellent, too.

Elton John possesses the ability to take words and music, fuse them together, give them a special injection of passion as only he can and finally perform these ballads with great panache and pure elegance. Elton blesses us with his artistry; and I can only hope that if we're lucky Elton will continue to perform for many years to come.

4 out of 5 stars Elton John Love Songs.......2007-03-12

A nice collection of Elton John's love songs. Great for Valentines Day or a nice gift fo your sweetheart.

4 out of 5 stars Fans can never be objective..........2006-05-06

From the OBJECTIVE reviewer...a great overview it isn't, but as a concept album it is great...plus both of the new songs are really good especially "You Can Make History" and for those two reasons worth the 4 stars.

4 out of 5 stars I really like this CD but..........2005-12-19

I bought this CD as a Valentine's Day gift for my wife (another reviewer also mentions that as a good idea). It is a great collection of Elton John material that we both really enjoy, BUT as some other reviewers have pointed out, it is not completely filled with love songs. I would have left off "Circle of Life" (although I like the song) in favor of "I Guess That's Why They Call It the Blues." Also, I didn't realize when I bought it that the CD includes the live George Michael version of "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me" instead of Elton's original studio version, which I would have preferred. As a result, I find myself almost always skipping this track.
