Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars One of the finest garage rock sets ever assembled. .......2007-06-07

Along with Nuggets and the Back from the Grave CDs, the first volume of the Essential Pebbles series is one of the greatest purchases that a garage rock fan can make. The two discs that make up this set are crammed full of brainbending mid-60s classics of the highest order. The songs are raw, crude, murderously energetic, and more fun than a roller coaster- in other words, everything that rock 'n' roll is supposed to be.

The first disc of the set is particularly impressive. It cobbles together 29 of the best tracks from the first ten CDs of the long-running Pebbles series, as well as three cuts from Ear-Piercing Punk, an offshoot of the series. These songs are simply astounding. The Preachers' cover of "Who Do You Love" opens the album with a menacing burst of drums, some filthy guitars, and an absurdly thuggish, greasy, mean-as-hell vocal. The Grains of Sand keep the party going with the hyperactive "Going Away Baby," which features an ultra-hip vocal and an organ solo that practically bounces off the walls of the recording studio. The Jujus' "You Treat Me Bad" is as absurd as it is catchy, thanks to its oddly appealing impish vocals and shimmering guitar line. The Haunted's "1-2-5" is a churning, greasy punk rocker with a nasty guitar line and a strutting rhythm section. The Wild Knights' "Beaver Patrol" is pure macho-posturing frat-rock, with a hilariously stupid vocal performance and a grinding R&B sensibility. The Lyrics' "So What" is a furious snarling stomper with some truly mean harmonicas. The Green Fuz's "Green Fuz" may very well be the greatest garage rock song of all time- it's inarticulate, deranged, played without an ounce of professionalism, and catchier than anything you've ever experienced. Crank it up. Teddy & The Patches "Suzy Creamchease" is a hilarious Frank Zappa ripoff with a brutal fuzz guitar onslaught, while T.C. Atlantic's "Faces" is a grooving acid storm with some truly trippy lyrics. William Penn V's "Swami" is a gut-bustingly funny piece of acid-rock-garage with some buzzing guitars and an addictive rhythm. The Tree's "No Good Woman" is a raving three-chord pounder with furious vocals, and the Plague's "Go Away" expands on the wildest aspects of the Kinks' early singles. The Gentlemans' "It's A Crying Shame" is a roaring stomper that begs you to sing along with it, and the Omens' "Searching" is a firestorm of swirling organs and roaring guitars. The Foggy Notions' "Need a Little Loving" is a (relatively) slow burning tune with some awesome, sensual vocals. Dean Carter's "Rebel Woman" is a classic piece of salivating desire, and the Lost Agency's "One Girl Man" is a sneering stomper of the highest order. The Trolls' "Every Night & Every Day" is a catchy three-chorder with some surprisingly funny lyrics. The Starfires' "I Never Loved Her" is quiter than some of the other songs here, but it burns with its own fiery intensity. The Beckett Quintet's "No Correspondance" is a merseybeat popper with a shimmering guitar lick. The Dovers' "She's Not Just Anybody" is just plain astounding, a bewitching slice of Beatles-influenced folk rock with a delicate cascade of guitars and a wistful, haunting vocal. The Hysterics' "Everything's There" has what may be the single filthiest vocal performances in history, and the broken-glass guitar line is icing on the cake. The Good Feelings' "Shattered" is a spacey swirl of keyboards and crunching guitars, while the Breakers' "I Ain't Dead Yet" is a defiant rocker with a rumbling melody. The Uncalled For's "Do Like Me" is one of the catchiest songs ever, a strutting popper that steadily builds in intensity. The Gonn's "Doin' Me In" is another one of those incredble garage rock epiphanies- it's a two chord punk apocalaypse with what can only be described as a gloriously desperate vocal. The Mile Ends' "Bottle Up and Go" is a sneering, dissafected raver, and the Bohemian Vendetta's "Enough" pounds along with a smokey organ riff. Keith Kessler closes out the disc with the surging "Don't Crowd Me." So, yep, every single song on disc 1 is awesome.

Disc 2, meanwhile, brings together a bunch of incredibly rare garage rock tunes that've never been reisuued before. They're not all winners, but there are enough good 'uns (such as the Motifs' "Someday" and the Shays' brilliant "Brainwashed") to make it an excellent listen for both newbies and diehard garage fans alike.

This is one of Garage rock's very finest compilations, a testiment to the power of the music at its best. Nobody who's even remotely interestred in garage shoudl be without this.

5 out of 5 stars the unheard music is usually the best.......2006-09-17

Very enjoyable rock-n-roll. Any one of these bands could've made it big had they been in the right circumstances. I wonder what all these guys are doing now. This stuff is timeless.

5 out of 5 stars time warp.......2005-07-06

What a surprise to discover that a song I recorded when I was 15 years old, in 1965, is selling on a compilation in 2005!!! I played the farfisa organ on "Searching" by the "Omens". We recorded this in a cramped, second floor apartment in Hammond, Indiana on a reel to reel tape. It was a wild time, playing teen clubs and sock hops, and paying WLTH DJ Ron Borden every $ we made to play the record on his radio show. This collection captures the vibrant energy of the 60's and showcases the raw talent that was rampant at the time.

5 out of 5 stars Don't think twice about picking this one up!.......2004-06-07

It goes without saying, with a collection title like ESSENTIAL PEBBLES, each song should be a winner. Disc 1 collects the creme de la creme of the first 10 CD volumes of the PEBBLES garage/punk series, and not one of these songs is bad! From The Preachers' "Who Do You Love" to Teddy and Patches' "Suzy Creamcheese" to The Trolls' "Every Day and Every Night" to The Uncalled For's "Do Like Me" to Keith Kessler's "Don't Crowd Me", all 29 tracks are a superb primer for the newcomer to the garage scene and will have you scrambling to get every volume of the PEBBLES collection (buyer beware: not all of them are this great). The last three songs, The Mile Ends' "Bottle Up and Go", Bohemian Vendetta's "Enough", and "Don't Crowd Me", are from the EAR PIERCING PUNK CD, an offshoot volume of the PEBBLES run.

Disc 2 is where the collection starts to wane. Containing 26 rare 45's and acetates from around the U.S., including some groups whose names are unknown (!), this is the real reason that even those who have every PEBBLES CD will be in heaven with this set. Not every song on this disc is a classic; as a matter of fact, you might say some of them deserve to be left in the dusty vaults they came from. But the highlights include: The Motifs' "Someday", The Shays' "Brainwashed" (which is bleeped for profanity!), The Sinners' French-language "Sinnerisme", The Mixed Emotions' "Can't You Stop It Now", The Thunderbolts' "Heart So Cold", Peter and the Wolves' "Hey Mama" and "Only Everything" (a cover of Them's "I Can Only Give You Everything"), The Shades' "Down the Road Apiece", The Dynamic Nutones' "Sick and Tired", The Hustlers' "The Sky is Black", The Thorns' "I'm in Love", and an unknown group's "Fed Up". Unfortunately a lot of the songs tend to sound identical to one another, but the fact that they probably weren't heard outside of their particular region makes them a real treat to finally be able to experience!

5 out of 5 stars USA Today.......2004-04-04

I was getting my oil changed at the local walmart the other day when I saw a lead article in USA today about how kids are starting to listen to the same music their parents did. Most of the kids quoted complained about a lack of quality with todays rockers. This is true. The problem is that no kids are learning to make it anymore.
The essential pebbles collection has none of this. All of the songs here were made by kids who were emulating everyone else they could see. 1966 was the most prolific musical year in history. And there are no bad songs on disc one. Even disc two is historically interesting. By the way, there are no master tapes to make the cd from. The singles are all that survives now. Some of what is on disc two has only one copy known worldwide. It saddens me to think what likely has been lost over the years.
This is the disc that made me get off my rear end and break out the old bass guitar, at age 42. If you know a kid who listens to Queen or the Rolling Stones, get them this and the nuggets box. We need new blood very badly.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Garage-rocking brilliance from SoCal!.......2007-06-23

Released after two somewhat dissapointing volumes that focused on the Chicago garage rock scene, the 8th CD installment of the Pebbles series is a welcome return to form. Gone are the mediocre, uninteresting, and occasionally flat-out awful songs that marred the two previous discs-this album is crammed full of fun, exciting, and ultra-obscure mid-60s rockers from Southern California.

Some of these songs are among the best garage rock records ever. The Dovers' "She's Not Just Anybody" should have (and could have) been a chart-topping smash. It is, simply put, a masterpiece, a haunting, emotional burst of chiming guitars and dreamy vocals, bolstered by a relentless river of percussion. The Starfires' tense, throbbing "I Never Loved Her" is almost as good. Same goes for "She Needs Me," a hypnotic fuzz rocker courtesy of the Grains of Sand. The Rumors' "Hold Me Now" is positively anthemic, thanks to its rousing, "Louie Louie"-inspired melody and exuberent vocals. The Cindermen's "Don't Do It Some More" is a relentlessly catchy twist rocker that features a wonderfully off-the-wall guitar solo. Terry Randall's "S.O.S." is a spooky, paranoid protest tune with a subtle, smoldering lead vocal and a churning rhythm. The Gigolos' "She's My Baby" is a storming, double-time punk-rocker with a strong rockabilly influence, and the Humane Society's "Knock Knock" is a fiery, snarling tune with some thorny guitars. The Cloudwalkers' "Sunglasses" is insanely cool, and the Bush provide a fantastic version of "Got Love if You Want It" that features some compact but explosive rave-up sections. The Green Beans' "Who Needs You" is every bit as sneeringly sarcastic as its title suggests, and The Beckett Quintet's "No Correspondence" is a quietly insane bouncer with an anthemic chorus. The Caretakers of Deception close out the album with driving "X+Y=13."

The afformentioned tunes are only a few of the highlights of this spectacular disc, one of the finest entries in the entire Pebbles series. Your garage collection isn't complete without this one.

5 out of 5 stars Yet another compilation of undeservedly obscure rock howlers.......2004-06-06

The PEBBLES series, which doesn't really pick up speed until Vol. 7 (CHICAGO VOL. 2, which Amazon doesn't carry for some reason but is essential listening), continues with SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA, gathering together rare 45 singles and acetates of garage bands and high school rock groups from Sacramento to San Diego, with plenty of small towns hit in-between. 2 of the songs, "Knock Knock" by The Humane Society (without a doubt one of the best unheard songs of the 60s) and "Hold Me Now" by The Rumors (which I dare you not to rock out to), are included on the NUGGETS boxed set, but they're surrounded by so many amazing gems here that this volume simply cannot be passed over.

Terry Randall's anti-riot anthem "S.O.S." kicks off the album with a bang; this is one dark little mother of a single, half-sung, half-spoken by an unknown artist. Of the 25 songs, the highlights are: The Starfires' "I Never Loved Her", The Grains of Sand's "She Needs Me", The Cindermen's "Don't Do It Some More", The Colony's "All I Want", The Cloudwalkers' "Sunglasses", The Beckett Quintet's "No Correspondence", The Dovers' "She's Not Just Anybody", Sean and the Brandywines' "She Ain't No Good", The Rogues' "Wanted: Dead or Alive" (the guitar work is very similar to that of "Hey Joe"), The Last Word's "Sleepy Hollow", The Green Beans' "Who Needs You", Limey and the Yanks' "Guaranteed Love" and "Out of Sight, Out of Mind" (a cover of a terrific single by New York City's Bit-A-Sweet, which has never been available reissued) are all singles which should have been national hits, blowing anything by The Dave Clark Five or Herman's Hermits out of the water. Not every song is a bonafide classic, but they're all sterling examples of what makes 60s garage rock a highly sought-after subgenre of classic rock.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars 4.5 stars- a fantastic beginning to a great series........2007-05-21

Originally released in 1978 by a small Australian record label, the first volume of the Pebbles series is one of the quintessential platters of obscure 60s garage rock. The songs here are rough, rowdy, and raw, bashed out by pimple-popping teenagers with a surplus of passion and youthful agression. The set boasts some of the most revered garage rock tunes ever- The Litter's "Action Woman," for example, is widely considered to be one of the greatest 60s punk tunes of all time. Which makes perfect sense when you consider the fact that its a brutal, cathartic masterpiece, brimming with manic energy and sexual frustration. The Preachers' rendition of the classic Bo Diddley tune "Who Do You Love" is a grimey, thuggish, violent masterpiece, decked out with some caveman vocals and a mencaing, roaring melody. The Haunted's "1-2-5" is the epitome of slinky, greasy rock n roll, and "Going Away Baby" by the Grains of Sand is a hyperactive barn-burning organ-bashing extraviganza. The Outcasts' "I'm In Pittsburgh" is pure, double-time proto punk, and the Wild Knights' "Beaver Patrol" is fantastically filthy. There are also a few flat-out weirdos: Kim Fowley's "The Trip" is a wonderfully sleazy psychedelic rant, and The Elastik Band's "Spazz" may very well be one of the most insensitive songs of all time- and it's still great. The JuJus' "You Treat Me Bad" features some fantastically odd lead vocals and a great, driving guitar line. The Soup Greens contribute a hilarious cover of Bob Dylan's "Like A Rolling Stone" which bears almost no resemblance to the original. But never mind that- with its driving, "Louie Louie" style chord progression and sing-along vocals, it's still a great song. The Gonn's "Blackout of Gretely" and the Sparkles' "Ain't No Friend of Mine" (both of which were included as CD only bonus tracks) are two of the loudest, rawest, and meanest garage songs ever. There are a few somewhat unspectacular tracks: "Potato Chip" is an obscure number by the relatively well-known Shadows of Knight, possibly released as a promotion for a potato chip company, which features a spoken word "interview" with the band followed by a weird song about the titular snack food. The interview, which is obviously scripted and features the band cracking some terrible jokes in a bored monotone, is interesting for kitsch value and not much else. The song itself is weird, dull, and worthless. Positively 13 O Clock (a doppleganger for Texas' Mouse and the Traps) turn in a fun but largely forgettable cover of the Count Five's "Psychotic Reaction," and the Split Ends' "Rich With Nothin'" is a decent but unnecessary number that I could really give or take. Also, the packaging itself contiand a couple of truly boneheaded errors: Two of the songs listed as being on the CD (The Wig's "Crackin' Up" and "I Need Love" by the Third Booth) are left off of the disc. The compilers also left off the Squires' excellent "Going all the Way," even though it was one of the highlights of the vinyl edition. Nonetheless, this is an excellent garage compilation, and a key purchase for any fan of 60s obscurity.

5 out of 5 stars Great garage sloppers from the masters!.......2006-05-03

This whole damn series is great! This is what rock is about! The pebbles series is the best in psychedelic freak outs and punk that makes Jhonny Rotten hide under his bed. This is a good primer for what lies ahead. The politcally incorrect song "Spazz" by the Elastik band is a great funny song about, how do I say it nicely, the mentally challenged, then you got "Beaver Patrol" by a bunch of horny teenagers looking for some action and then the song "Black Out of Greteley" the best line of the song being " the universe is permeated with Kerosene" then a insane scream and they just rip in to the song. Picks up where Rockabilly stopped in 1959.

3 out of 5 stars A good kick-off to an essential series.......2004-06-02

The PEBBLES series is well-documented as the underdog follow-up to the infamous NUGGETS set, but real music lovers in the know have learned it is the far superior collection, compiling more obscure tunes by more obscure bands. Now, to be fair, not all the volumes in the series are really worth getting. VOL. 1 is a superb introduction to the series. Word of warning: The Litter's "Action Woman", The Haunted's "1-2-5", Kim Fowley's "The Trip", The Elastic Band's "Spazz", The Sparkles' "No Friend of Mine", and Gonn's "Blackout of Gretely" all have appeared on either NUGGETS or NUGGETS II, but they're presented here sounding like they're blaring out of your turntable, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. Plus "Blackout of Gretely" is much longer here than it appears on NUGGETS!

Not all the songs on this set are worth a relisten, but some of the real gems are The Preachers' "Who Do You Love" (quite a departure from the familiar Woolies version), The Grains of Sand's "Going Away Baby", The Split Ends' "Rich With Nothin'" (great song about a rich girl who turns her back on her roots), and The Wild Knights' "Beaver Patrol", which must be one of the raunchiest rock records ever recorded. A bonus track, "It's Your Time" by The Weeds, is really cool, too!

Another word of warning: Wig's "Crackin' Up" and The Third Booth's "I Need Love" are not included on this CD, despite being on the track listing. Most of the best songs on this CD would be included on the later ESSENTIAL PEBBLES compilations, but this is still one disc you shouldn't be without in your 60s garage band collection.
