Fronted by Reggie Watts, whose expressive baritone has been a pillar of the Seattle music scene since the early '90s, the talented quintet Maktub (say it, "mocktube") blaze a righteous road of psychedelic soul-pop on Khronos, the follow-up to their 1999 debut Subtle Ways. Equally rooted in '70s soul and West Coast hipster rock, Maktub's skillful layers of groovy keyboards, drums, bass, and guitars result in tasty concoctions that are at once wholly original and appealingly familiar. Imaginative embellishments from a modified 1950s telephone mic (a.k.a. the "Regg-a-phone"), a guitar talkbox, synthesizers, and samples give the multifarious 11-song playlist novelty, although you'll hear everyone from Al Green and Robert Plant to Jamiroquai and Chris Cornell throughout. The uplifting opener, "You Can't Hide," is a superfly morsel of funk that's likely to be one of the album's biggest hits; the third track, "Give Me Some Time," is a very cool rocker evocative of what might occur were Steely Dan and Faith No More to meet in the studio; and "Just Like Murder" is a gorgeously dark medley of Hammond organ and guitars that escalate and recede as Watts reflects on heartbreak. Their inspired cover (perhaps explaining the slightly off lyrics) of Led Zeppelin's "No Quarter" is followed by the album's most leaden entry, "Motherf**ker," but the chilled-out "Then We'll Know" is a gentle wind down. In all, the excellent Khronos ensures that if you don't yet know and love Maktub, you should and will. --Rebecca Robinson

Why wasn't this a hit?.......2007-07-16
It really is too bad there's so much hip hop crowding the airwaves. This deserved to get heard.
Modern Funk/Soul Throwback.......2007-03-11
Like the song says, Give It Some Time..........2006-08-14
A year later, I found Khronos stuck in a bargain bin at a record store. For some reason, it struck a chord and I bought it on a whim. I popped the disc into my car stereo and, crazy enough, there it stayed, for most of the summer.
Maybe I was still a little prejudiced from the lame live show, but it took a few listenings for me to get into this album. Maktub is one of those bands who's stylistic influences don't always mesh gracefully, resulting in music that oozes all over the place: bland, soul-less ballads mixing with with bombastic, Led Zepplin-ish style rock and Sly Stone funk; much like the original Saturday Night Live crew, when the boys are on, they are on. Unfortunately, when they're not, they're not.
Thank God for my iPod. It's given this album a whole new life, being able to edit out the boring crud from the jams. 'Give Me Some Time' rocks, and the moody 'Just Like Murder' is the best song on the CD - and they're probably the most radio-friendly tunes on the album, too.
After immersing myself in Khronos, I went back and bought Maktub's debut album, Subtle Ways. The leap Maktub has made musically since then is immense. The band is solid, but the addition of versatile guitarist Thaddeus Turner since that first effort has really fleshed out the band's sound (and their follow up to Khronos, 2005's Say What You Mean, is even better).
The star here though, is Reggie Watts (a fixture of the Seattle music scene since the early '90's), and his deep, expressive baritone. He's got the vocal chops - and the hair - to burn bright enough to eventually leave these guys behind (see his solo album, Simplified).
Smooth..........2006-03-29
addictive.......2005-03-02
My other favorite is "Then We'll Know", although the whole album is good for listening straight through. For lack of a better and less cliched sounding term, Reggie Watts exudes a seductive soulfulness in his vocals. He takes his work seriously while having fun and using the tools he has.
All this said, I only started listening to Maktub by accident. I learned the Arabic word "maktub" from a former boyfriend, and I was completely delighted by this word (later saw it used frequently in Coelho's The Alchemist). When I saw that there was a band called Maktub, I was curious. Maktub's musical style is not normally a genre to which I listen; however, there was something special about Maktub, with which I immediately felt a kind of connection... I have been a fan ever since.

My Personal Favorite RC Album!.......2004-12-08
"I'll be the fire that keeps you warm".......2004-05-05
Great agressive shocker.......2004-01-30
I loved their previous effort (Sleep of the Angels), and liked the progression from Dead Poem. I guess I was expecting a continuance of that direction, and was taken off guard. I got over that quickly.
Though this album has a few weak tracks, it is possibly more diverse than the average Rotting Christ album. The best songs make up for any minor shortcomings: Aeternatus, Khronos, Thou Art Blind, Art of Sin, etc. Aeternatus and Khronos are probably my two favorites, yet probably the most opposite on the album. There is also a great cover of Current 93's: Lucifer Over London.
The Art Of Khronos.......2003-12-12
With this album they show us their more aggressive side, which I must add, is not as good. It is overall a much more heavy album than what we are used to from Rotting Christ. Their previous albums, "A Dead Poem", and "Sleep Of Angels", are much more melodic and tranquil than this one, however, this album has plenty of good songs, some resembling their previous work.
"If It Ends Tomorrow" and "My Sacred Path" are very good tracks. The guitars play a major role yet they seem to be kept in the background. The sound in this album is very full, and dispite what these other reviewers said, the production is very good, these reviewers don't know what they are talking about. They make it sound like it was recorded in their garage or something, c'mon be serious, and get informed before reviewing an album. My favourite song in this album is "Art Of Sin", it possesses an amazing riff that few bands can come up with. "Khronos" is another strong track, so are "Fateless", and "Glory Of Sadness".
The reason I gave this album a 4 star review is that even if this album has too many songs that are mediocre (tracks like "Aeternus", "Law Of the Serpent", "You Are I", and even "Thou Art Blind") Rotting Christ still manages to get me hooked to it. I love this band, they are really good, so you must definitely listen to them. If you have never heard their stuff I recommend "A Dead Poem" or "Sleep Of Angels" as they are the classic Rotting Christ albums.
