Classic Soul.......2005-10-26

Juduging by the CD title you might expect Etta James and Sugar Pie DeSanto's "In The Basement, Part One" but...just kiddin' - there's really nothing missing here.
If you expect all Kent-Modern sides, this is not the one (although) you'd be missing many great sides from famous independents. Vernon Garrett's "Shine It On" is the only number actually from listed as Kent.
Rodger Collins' "She's Lookin' Good" and Little Richard's "Get Down With It" are presented. Maybe they didn't make a whole lotta noise way back when but the've gotten reinvigorated on this classy CD. I must confess I bought the CD hoping that one of R. Penniman's live in Atlanta cuts finally made it to the new medium, but "Get Down..." [in mono] comes by way of Abbey Road about a year later. Some heavy-handed horns weigh it down at the end but it's a better try than the earlier rough workout.
By the way, it's been reported that Reggie Dwight (aka Elton John) is heard on the LR track included here.
"You Left The Water Running" by Barbara Lynn on Tribe is a moving statement; Erma Franklin's "The Right To Cry" on Shout is another tune which I might not label a "lost hit" because the artistry transcends any Golden Oldies designation.
Also sit back and enjoy Mighty Sam's 1967 version of "When She Touches Me (Nothing Else Matters)" from Amy.
Dave Godin's notes read real easy and the packagaing works, too.

Sixties soul sampler.......2004-02-27

Coming from Ace Records' of the U.K. soul subsidiary label Kent, this collection is geared to the British music-buying public but offers an eclectic sampling of music for customers on both sides of the pond. Here are gathered up 26 mid- and late 60's soul singles, many of which were big r'n'b hits as well as some that also made an impact on the pop charts. A few of the more widely popular crossover tunes include Bettye Swann's "Make Me Yours" (in beautiful stereo, not the stifled mono stuff found on a domestic CD), the Intruders top-10 pop gem "Cowboys To Girls" and the Purify's bouncy "Let Love Come Between Us". For the collector, there are such rarities as "Karate-Boo-Ga-Loo" from Jerry-O, the Packers' "Hole In The Wall" and the Steelers' "Get It From The Bottom". Most of the remaining tracks are r'n'b hits, misses and rarities. While many of these tracks are relatively obscure, Ace/Kent maintains their usual high standards for sound sources and presentation. Six (4-6,9,14,15) of the 26 tracks appear in stereo with the remainder in mono. Providing backround on the included tracks is a 16-page liner notes booklet with pics and other illustrations, that completes this high-quality piece. Another fine effort from the folks at Ace/Kent.

This is an excellent collection of "lost souls" as I like to put it. The first volume is better, however you must have both volumes in your collection.
