5 out of 5 stars I Can See Clearly Now: Johnny Nash.......2005-11-14

Nash's beautiful soaring vocals (he can't hold a note? Are we listening to the same Johnny Nash here?), gorgeous melodies together with some hypnotic reggae rhythms and rousing soul tracks... this is a classic 70s album. Oh, and J. P. Kraus, Bob Marley did not write or contribute to the title track: it's pure Nash. Several of the songs on the album, correctly attributed to Marley, were commissioned (not stolen off a kid for $50) from him by Nash, including Stir It Up, Guava Jelly and Comma Comma - the latter is just sublime in Johnny's hands. Buy this album for an uplifting soulful experience.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful with a story that got lost in the process.......2005-02-26

Johnny Nash does indeed do a spectacular job with "I Can See Clealy Now". What is little known is the genesis of the song. Johnny had a couple of regional hits, vacationed in Jamaica and heard a very, very young group of kids play and sing Mento. Or maybe already Rock Steady. Who knows. Anyway, he got to talking with the kid singing lead, and Junior sang a new song that he had written to The Big Man From America. The BMFA liked it and gave the kid fifty bucks for it. Took it back home, and had an international hit on his hands.
The kid who wrote and sold it was Bob Marley.

1 out of 5 stars Oddly enough, Nash version not the best.......2003-07-17

Although Johnny Nash wrote this diddy, I'd have to rank his
version as a poor fourth to three others. Too many "yo, yo yos"
is part of his problem in trying to sing his own song. His voice also isn't a particulary good one - he can't hold a note for any length of time and he can't accentuate his stops the way this song requires. What an irony, but then again, Hoagy Carmichael would never be my first choice for any of his songs either. This
certainly isn't the first time a song found better nterpretation by someone other than the composer. Several of Simon's songs
(of Simon and Garfunkel) were given superior treatments by others.

5 out of 5 stars wonderful effort.......2000-09-18

It's hard to turn on an "oldies" format station and not hear Johnny Nash's beautiful voice streaming from it, singing "I Can See Clearly Now." It is one of the highpoints of reggae in the United States, and a pop song legend.

What is missed, however, is that Nash had several hits, and was instrumental in helping Bob Marley jumpstart his career. Indeed, Nash's cover of the Marley staple "Stir It Up" did much to bring Marley's name to the lips of American listeners.

This collection is a great one, showcasing Nash's beautiful voice that sends shivers up and down the spines of many a listener (myself included) and is worth having in any collection, if for the title track alone, one of the most positive songs in all of reggae.

Add to the title track "Stir It Up," the uptempo "That's the Way We Get By," and the beautiful "So Nice While It lasted" and "There Are More Questions Than Answers," and this collection is close to perfect.

Add it to your collection now and you, too, will have blue skieeeeeeessssssssssss...

5 out of 5 stars Conniff does it again!!.......2007-05-26

An uptempo CD collection of Ray Conniff's finest is found in this set from the 1970's. His own version of "Harmony" is a delight to listen.Ray and the singers did a splendid job in this collection of familiar tunes that all of us enjoyed back then!

5 out of 5 stars Two of the Very Best.......2006-04-05

This "two-fer" couples two of the very best examples of the "New Conniff" sound of the seventies and early eighties that provided masterful rearrangements of popular hits of the time. Following on the heels of the breakthrough Conniff LP, "Theme From the Godfather...," "I Can See Clearly Now" was a new classic for Conniff. It firmly established the "sound," and other highly successful, and eminently listenable LPs followed. As a single continually played on radios across the world, "Harmony" was a logical partner for this reissue. These two CDs reflect Conniff "as good as it gets!"

4 out of 5 stars Fun & Entertaining, But Short........2006-10-25

This album includes six songs both as audio recordings by characters from Shrek as well as the karaoke versions of the songs. The songs include:

"Disco Inferno" by Donkey

"These Boots are Made for Walkin'" by Puss in Boots

"I Can See Clearly Now" by Three Blind Mice

"Hooked on a Feeling" by Captain Hook

"I'm Too Sexy" by Prince Charming

"What I Like About You" by Shrek & Fiona

Some of the songs are funny to listen to a few times especially after having seen the movies. However, the only song that I enjoy listening to over and over and over is "What I Like About You." I wish they would have had a few more tunes on the album. A good cd for fans of the Shrek movies.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars DeRose is a fabulous musician, period.......2005-09-04

I could quite easily pontificate for five or six paragraphs on the startling, brilliant music that Ms. DeRose produces, but just listening to this album (and her latest, "A Walk in the Park") says it all for me. As a pianist, she synthesizes elements of Red Garland, Ahmad Jamal and Bill Evans into her own personal style; as a singer, she has in my view the clearest, most attractive and best-controlled voice since Ella (though her style is not the same). She sings with a clear, bell-like tone, attacking notes cleanly and with greatly varied swing even in ballads, ending her phrases with a terminal vibrato. Her "trick" of singing with her own improvisations is brilliant - an extension of the similar work done by bassist Slam Stewart in the 1940s and `50s.

Dena DeRose is the modern, female equivalent of Nat "King" Cole. It is indeed a shame that the music and entertainment worlds no longer have room for someone this talented and lacking in superficial attractions (gorgeous looks, wardrobe malfunctions, dancing with her thumb in the belt of her pants a la Britney Spears) to make a big name for herself.

If you enjoy not only Nat Cole but also Garland, Jamal and singers of the quality of Connee Boswell or Mavis Rivers, these CDs are for you.

5 out of 5 stars Upbeat jazz from talented singer-pianist.......2003-07-12

This was the third album from Dena, a singer-pianist from New York with a voice as clear as a bell. The liner notes describe the album as philosophically upbeat, reflecting Dena's mood at the time. While the mood is upbeat, the tempo of the music varies. Six other musicians - Joe Locke (vibes), Joel Frahm (saxophone), Jim Rotondi (trumpet), Dwayne Burno (bass), Mark Taylor (drums) and Mark Wilson (drums) - accompanied Deana on the sessions.

If you love me was originally written by Edith Piaf in French. With a smile was written by Dena, demonstrating that she can write her own material. I can see clearly now was originally a reggae song by Johnny Nash but has been covered in a variety of styles. As well as adapting it to suit her own particular style, Deana slows it right down - very interesting, although the slowness does not make it better. The remaining seven songs are from the Great American Songbook. One of the most famous of these, Day in day out, features a rousing saxophone solo.

If you are looking for a modern jazz album that pays respect to tradition without being constrained by it, then you will enjoy this album.

5 out of 5 stars The most sensational female jazz vocalist/pianist.......2003-03-12

I stumbled on to this CD quite accidentally when I went through the alphabtical list and when I listened to the first title "If I should lose you", I was completely overwhelmed by her ability to impart on the listener the total feelings the song is meant to convey.I ended up getting all four of her CD's and I never cease asking myself if it is real that talent like Dena exists. I am constantly looking out for more CD from her and certainly would like to have video of any live performance of her.

5 out of 5 stars Entertaining and a great listen.......2003-01-14

I purchased this CD after hearing an interview and review on PBS. I consider myself a person of eclectic tastes and not necessarily a jazz fan -- and I really enjoy Dena's sound ... easy listening, mellow and relaxing, yet full of fun. Even my kids like it.

5 out of 5 stars Once heard, forever hooked........2002-02-21

Dena DeRose's recent airing on NPR really grabbed me by the ears. If you haven't heard her, check her out, and you'll immediately understand why. It's hard to recall the last time I was so wowed by a CD (nothing else has motivated my writing a review here). Whoever did the very tasty arrangements deserves the year's gold medal for fresh takes on old standards. Topnotch sidemen throughout deliver some exciting rides, but they'd have to be really bad to taint DeRose's performance on these recordings. Her piano alone is impressive, but her singing - yowza! What an incomparable combination. Diana Krall's sulky looks will never get her around this lady.

THIS CD IS SO HOT. You have to buy it man. Best Christian rap cd ever. Mr. Solo, Tikk Tokk, and Chily Baby are hot in this cd. These guy used to be gangstaz but it is cool that they are Christian now cause then I wouldn't of enjoyed this cd. It has West Coast groove to it. Real gangsta rap. CHeck out #3, I Call Your Name.

3 out of 5 stars Good beats, but not enough Satan.......2006-03-16

Being THE definitive hiphop encyclopedia that I am, I decided to give this album a try - especially for the fact that I know my Chrisitian Gangsta Rap like no one else in the states.

So I checked it out. The beats are pretty hot. Actually, the beats are downright smokin'. Hot fire westcoast sounds. Makes you wanna rob a liquor store, smoke dippers and call up your local neighborhood chickenhead to get your swerve on.

The lyrical content is outright garbage though. I mean, the flow is nice, but man - could these guys get any more preachy? I don't wanna hear about Jesus and saving ourselves and heaven and all that.

What these guys SHOULD'VE done is bust phat rhymes about sacrifices dedicated to our Dark Lord Kromdor and everything that he represents. Lord Kromdor will save you. He's tight with Satan, so you know for a fact His crew is a tight crew to be representin.

So next time Gospel Gangstaz, less Jesus, more Dark Lord Kromdor. Your album will be hot fire!

    Peace

5 out of 5 stars Classic gospel rap album!! Probably my favorite gospel rap album of all time.......2005-09-28

The gospel gangstaz came correct on this album. I knew about the gospel gangstaz for several years now. But, this was the 1st time i ever bought one of their albums. And man, did i get my money's worth or what? All of the songs have that nice west coast groove that i've enjoyed for many years. The best songs on the album are ''Once was blind'' [Rap and Gospel versions], ''Questions'' [The best song on the album], ''Live it up'', And ''Let us pray''. If you're looking for a christian rap album that's great [And has a little gangsta edge to it as well] Get this now. Be blessed.
