The Indigo Girls, now marking their 20th anniversary, were in a bit of slump before turning to producer Mitchell Froom, who serves them well on this energized effort--their 10th studio album and first for a new label. Recorded at Froom's home studio in Santa Monica, California, the album finds Ray, Saliers & Co. trying a few new things--recording with everybody in the same room, for example, and stepping further out of their acoustic framework for an enhanced sonic landscape, e.g., the Beatlesque "Little Perennials." They also invited impressive newbie Brandi Carlisle to harmonize on "Last Tears," one of the disc's most memorable tracks, and called on Pink (the IGs appeared on I'm Not Dead) for "Rock and Roll Heaven's Gate." All this contributes to a fresher sound and attitude, but the songwriting (Amy's rock leanings, Emily's moody balladry) is up a notch, too, with the social activism ("Pendulum Swinger") better expressed and more sophisticated than their usual banner-waving. What hasn't changed is the way the duo's vocal lines entwine like tangled lovers--at their best, it's hard to tell where one leaves off and the other begins, their corduroy-and-denim harmonies becoming a sort of third tone. That's a neat trick for voices as diverse and distinctive as these, still commanding as they enter their third decade. --Alanna NashCustomer Reviews:

With a new producer and a new label, it seems as though IG has shaken off the doldrums that populated their last effort, when they replaced strong songwriting with lots of instrumentation. They use a variety of guitars here, mostly acoustic, but with electrics, slide and mandolin counterpoints. (No banjo, more's the pity.) Their back up musicians are solid and sparse. Pink appears on one song, and although her appearance and the rocker quality of the song made waves when the CD first appeared, the song "Rock and Roll Heaven's Gate" is an anthem about the music business, and, while clever and tuneful, fades away in the power of the other songs.
I normally gravitate towards Emily's songs, and here she is the sad balladeer of love lost, for the most part. She writes the opening song, "Pendulum", which is the most political ("the ticker of the nation breaking down like a bad clock") of the songs here. As in all Emily's political statements, she blends the political and the spiritual; it's a woman's power song, and lyrically stirring. My favorite of her songs on this CD is also one of those songs I can't let go of. It's entitled
"Run". In this song, Emily is relegating herself to the role of one of many lovers who've been left by someone who becomes fearful of giving too much in a relationship:
...."And you run, that's all you've ever done
It's all you know to do
I can't hold that against you.
And you'll flee, you're born to be free
And if you go, I'll understand
But you better get out while you can."
Her lyrics are as intense and as fiery in "All the Way", and her "Last Tears" and "I Believe in Love" are equally beautiful in the combination of lyrics and music. Only "Fly", with its metaphors about birds, is a weak contribution in her portion of the CD.
Amy Ray surprises with a rhythmic "Little Perennials", my favorite of her songs on this CD and the tune that keeps coming to mind whenever I look to find the CD to play again. It's a bit nonsensical, and finds, uniquely, Emily doing the low harmony instead of the high. Amy's two "rural" songs are drawn from the land on which she lives, with "Dirt and Dead Ends" the most striking and "They Won't Have Me" describing how little she fits into the rural southern landscape, despite her good intentions.
"Three County Highway" describes just about every little town I've been in and it's a love song, a little different than what Ray usually writes about.
Musically, "Despite Our Differences" is a great blend of two musicians coming together and blending their differences in a collaboration that weaves back and forth. Lyrically, it is outstanding. As usual, it gets more frequent play than anything else I've purchased in the last 6 months in my car. It's good road music, it's articulate, it's everything I buy an IG collaboration for.
I hope you listen and enjoy.

Another Chapter In The Indigo Girls Story.......2007-01-10
Listening to "Despite Our Differences" will force long time Indigo Girl fans to think back through the years and various periods of the girls work and once again appreciate having a new age of Indigo Girls music to step into. After a long history at CBS/Sony, "Despite Our Differences" is the first release on the Hollywood Records label and a wonderful sign of an artist receiving a fresh welcome from a new home to continue to create in their own unique way.
"Pendulum Swinger" is an apt name for an opening track on an album that finds both Amy and Emily taking a fresh view at the current landscape of our world, our popular culture, our politics, and their own place inside of it. "Rock and Roll Heavens Gate" is an Amy Ray track that rocks with the punk rock fueled angst of her solo work and is an excellent song for many of us middle aged rebels who still believe in the power of music to be true and inspirational despite the way the corporate climate tries its best to stifle the life out of all of it. "Lay My Head Down" is Emily Sailers at her best. Her songs are always so emotionally powerful and she seems to lay out her heart and soul into all of her tracks on "Despite Our Differences."
It has been a long time since the Indigo Girls amazingly successful 1989 debut, but one should never overlook a new release from them as they consistently find a way to get under your skin with their sense of searching and always seeking to inspitre themselves and all of us with each new work.

Living Legends are underground, but they concoct many songs here I would not be mad at hearing in a club or at a party. Don't fret! They got some surefire underground/conscious Hiphop hits like "Days Go By," "Damn It Feels Good," "Hold Your Own," and "Aspirations," which are introspective and provoke thought. The last two are probably my favorites off the album. Each of the eight members get their own solo here, and I think the best ones out of these were The Grouch's "No Strings Attached" and Eligh's "Friends Are Calling." Odd that those two happen to be the only non-African-Americans out of the group. Sunspot (Jonz) cooks up a rock-solid party hit with "It Might Be You," which I listen to often and it has a cool beat.
"Creative Differences" starts out with the 6-minute title track which is the only song with all eight members involved. This one is loose, funky, and comical. Next is the lighthearted "Fill My Drink Up," which is not terrible, but it is forgettable. "Addicted" is actually very good. It uses A LOT of dark humor, and is memorable just because many artists are afraid to touch upon the topic(see for yourself). Scarub's "Time To Ride" is next and showcases his wacky wordplay, although it doesn't do him much justice. This one should grow on you though. Elsewhere, Bicasso controlls the solid "Get It In Your Soul," and Murs's solo is the underwhelming "Real Slow The Fast Way," which has some good moments, but a lame chorus and an eyesore of a third verse(I need not repeat it). The only song I'm not feeling at all was "How You Take It," mostly because 2/3 of it is in a different language by Arata, while Scarub raps(in English) for the rest of it. However, how many artists do you see out there including a track in a foreign language? At least it was different.
This album turned out to be good because it's like a grab bag for fans of all different tastes. I bought this album having known a little of Scarub, and while he holds it down, the member who caught my ear was Eligh. Eligh participated in three of the four strongest songs on this album, as well as dropping a memorable solo track. He displays a quick rhyming technique at times, and constantly has insightful and witty lyrics. Yes, some of the tracks may sound rather mainstream-ish, but I think they wore the hat well and weren't trying to sell out. They just want to rock the party as well as stimulate the minds, that's all. The beats were all done by a variety of the members, and they range from fresh to unnoticeable. If you see "Creative Differences" in the stores, it may very well be worth your money to see what's it's all about!

Nonfiktion aka Gangsta Dre is one of the siccness rappers I have ever heard. This album "Creative Differences" has to be on top of my favorite west coast albums of all time besides Brotha Lynch's albums and Young Ridah. My favorite type of rappers are flow/speed rappers and this man did it all on this album. Everytime I listen to it I don't skip one song EVER because none of them are sorry.
I suggest if you don't have this album you order it now or find it at your local mom and pop's stores because it's rare and it's one of the greatest albums you will ever hear. The production is out of this world and Nonfiktion rappin style is also out of this world. I would have to say he is one of the greatest rappers of all time.

A modernist miscellany.......2004-01-04
Salvatore Sciarrino's Introduzione all'oscuro was written in 1981, and is for twelve instruments. Much of the writing here verges on silence, with brief, insistently repeated motifs swirling out of the pianissimo writing, growing in diversity as the work progresses (in his note, the composer mentions distorted fragments of popular songs amongst the material). Ceccanti directs what is to my mind an overly swift reading that glosses over the subtleties in the score--the ensemble recherche's reading on Kairos is much more to my taste.
Sylvano Bussotti's 1985 work Nascolto is a brief quodlibet for nine instruments in honour of Pierre Boulez's 60th birthday. It entertains for its three-minute duration without threatening to become something more major.
Luciano Berio's Différences, completed in 1959, is one of the composer's most important early scores. It contrasts live music (for flute, clarinet, viola, cello and harp) with a tape of electronically modified versions of the live music. Inevitably the taped part sounds rather dated now, but the work still stands up remarkably well (and demonstrates how different Berio's essentially lyrical music was to that of his colleagues Boulez and Stockhausen. This performance doesn't strike me as any inferior to the long-standard Juilliard Ensemble recording (now deleted, formerly on Philips) and arguably it integrates tape and live playing more effectively.
Waarg, a 1988 composition by Iannis Xenakis, is a fairly typical product of the composer's later years. It progresses slowly and heavily, with a tendency towards block chords and regular rhythms, from an arresting opening to a pungent climax. I would have preferred a slightly more vigorous rendition, but this performance captures much of the essence of a work that appears otherwise unavailable.
Mixed results, then, with the rather short 43-minute playing time somewhat made up for by the low price. Those looking for the Berio or the Xenakis need not hesitate.
Some info for you, but only about differences........2003-04-29
It's only available for hire - at some expense. It is VERY difficult to negotiate with the publishers about viewing it, but I have a feeling that this is only because UE have some problem in their Vienna headquarters about this, not the British or American agents, that's for sure.
Differences is actually one of Berios most cogent pieces, and has such a strong tonal feel, that it is scarcely an inheritor of the post serialist sphere of ideas - yet it undoubtedly is a puzzle of a piece, and definitely part of the jigsaw of the late 20th century.
Because I have never had access to the score, I can only guess, but the piece contains very novel unfolding of themes in an overlapping way that is reminiscent of fugal development. Perhaps the strong tonal feel is due to the unconscious recognition of fragments with strong logical connections, each fragment having the feeling of specific location. Some people will say that this is evidence of strict atonal technique, and all my feelings of key centers are actually illusional and based on comparative cognition only.
Certainly, a piece like "Le marteaux sans Maitre" by Boulez is on the extreme edge of the this kind of cellular development idea. I have a book by a certain Bogaslaw Schaffer which describes this piece in great detail in these terms.
One might compare Differences with Tempi Concertati, composed in the same year - but you would get nowhere fast. Tempi Concertati is for a far larger ensemble, with a leading instrument (the flute) with very different compositional intentions. It's interesting how Berio always seems capable of holding so many very different ideas at the same time.
My very brief discussion with him was quite revealing. He is mildly dissatisfied with the development section after the second electronic interlude. He really wanted to return to this and re-write it, but it turned out that other projects really demanded attention, together with a time in America (I believe the piece was composed in Europe, probably Oneglia), and was interupted by the unexpected arrival of a member of Cathy Berberians family.
But even unfinished, or incomplete pieces from this man are treasure indeed.
I first heard a rendition from the Juilliard ensemble, which was played at a slightly slower tempo, and perhaps a little clearer. But I suspect that those players had the benefit of a long while with the score, and a lot of time to really contemplate the piece structurally. The players on this recording are nevertheless splendid and, give, of course, yet another view of the mystery. Thank you very much for a great and spirited performance.
The other pieces are wonderfuly played, but I don't have a great deal of knowledge about them.
Solid selection at budget price.......1999-04-20

Album Description
Differences In Space is an album of lively new age music. This is not meditation or background music. Each of the 20 tracks is unique and has a style of its own. There are no vocals. Everything is synthesizer but it doesn't always sound like synthesizer. Today synthesizers can simulate the sounds of acoustic instruments very realistically. The synthesizer simulated sounds of flute, piano, guitar, drum, marimba and other acoustic instruments are used on this CD. Three of the tracks are based in rhythm and percussion. Theses are Controlled Chaos, Sensible Nonsense and Craziness To The Second Power. The two tracks that could be considered space music are Harmonious Space and Cricket Chorus. Most people who enjoy classical, popular and light rock should enjoy the music on Differences In Space.Christian Music:
