The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra needs a guitar player!.......2006-11-09

Granted, they only need it for one composition (the last one, "The James Bond Theme") but still, without the guitar it's just not the same. Barry didn't compose this one so I suppose it was a bonus and I shouldn't complain, really. The rest of the music on all the CDs is fantastic. Some of the stuff I had heard before without realizing who had composed it. Very enjoyable, to say the least.

A Variety Of Classics!.......2005-12-06

John Barry has been composing film scores for over forty years and this is only scratching the surface of his productions. Never mind that the entire set is recorded by the Prague Philharmonic; it's pure to Barry's themes. While John Williams compositions ("Star Wars", etc.) are wild and flamboyant and Jerry Goldsmith's (Hoosier's, etc.) are mood pieces, John Barry crosses over all barriers and is amazingly diverse. Barry has recorded most of the exciting James Bond themes, melodramatic classics like "The Lion In Winter' and moody theme hits like "Midnight Cowboy". He also tugs at the heartstrings with compositions from, "Somewhere In Time", "Frances" and "Out Of Africa". He varies his themes for all types of films and few composers capture it so well.

There is over four hours of music in this set with a colorful and informative booklet.

Incredible Barry Collection.......2004-03-11

Any fan of movies will absolutley love this collection. Being a movie buff I couldn't wait to get this boxed set. Knowing Barry from all the James Bond movies, I did not realize his involvement with so many others. The orchestra is magnificent in all these themes. I'm listening to "High Road to China" right now and I'm drifting in the clouds in a Tiger Moth with Tom Selleck and Bess Armstrong. If you are familiar with a movie it will definitely have you seeing it again, if not the scores are still beautiful. Any fan of classical music will be pleased as well. Travellers will defintitely enjoy it for a long drive. I know from when I use to travel that music like this made the miles float by faster. I highly recommend these four CDs even if you just know a handful of the songs.

I have only one complaint about this CD.......2006-04-16

My one complaint is that after I listen to this CD, the catchy tunes get stuck in my head! And then I want to keep listening to it more and more. I love the selections on this CD, the fact that the songs are in English (I always wondered what the "Figaro, Figaro, Figaro" song was about!), and that a little background is given to each piece as well.

What every kid (and parent needs!).......2004-02-06

All I can say is my family LOVES this CD! We have a blast singing along, dancing, etc. It's made opera a new discovery for all of us.

What's Opera Doc?.......2003-03-29

No, this isn't Bugs Bunny's version of opera. It is, however, an excellent introduction to opera, for young and old alike. The the translations to English are quite clever, and the singers' voices are, for the most part, excellent and clear (overly florid voices can be such a turn-off). Grant Doyle, the baritone, is a particular stand-out: rather than sing "at" you, he manages to convey humor and emotion in his parts... you can almost *see* the funny bird catcher, Papageno, in the three songs from Mozart's "Magic Flute", which happent to be my 5-year old's favorite tracks. Doyle's turn as Figaro in "Largo al Factorum" from "The Barber of Seville" is pure joy. The children's chorus in "The Children's March" from "Carmen" is also delightful, and Gabriella Santinelli's(?) voice as the doll from Offenbach's "Tales of Hoffman" is simply amazing.

As much as I enjoy this album, I question the inclusion of the last three songs, which come from "Hansel and Gretel". The voices on the songs are of the overly florid nature, and I can see my daughter lose interest. I think it would have been more interesting to include more "Carmen," or arias from other such popular operas "Rigoletto" or "Aida". Or if the album needed to end on a slower note, the overcoat song from "La Boheme."

IAC, I have caught my daughter humming bits and pieces from the operas. Even I have managed to amaze people by correctly identifying the Flower Duet from "Lakme"! I strongly recommend this album.

Lots of Fun Music.......2002-11-29

Our baby seems to enjoy this operatic CD almost as much as her parents enjoy it. Maybe she doesn't even really hear it, but she does see her parents acting silly and singing along to the catchy opera songs. I think we'll be listening to this one for many years to come. You'll probably really enjoy this CD if you have an appreciation for opera already.

If you really like 70's themes, you should like this CD. It was a little too dated for me.

Bond and beyond on an excellent career retrospective........1998-08-25

Imitation is often considered the greatest form of flattery. John Barry's oeuvre has been sampled by dozens of contemporary musical artists, and he is often credited as being the godfather of "trip hop" (check recent albums by Portishead and Mono to hear the Barry influence). The Academy-award winning composer has been producing music for over forty years, but this collection focuses on the artist's most commercially successful period, the 1960's. The instantly recognizable and inimitable Barry style is well documented throughout 23 varied compositions. Selections range from classic to obscure, and include all the title tracks from the early James Bond soundtracks. Barry's film and television music is the defining sound of that era - lush orchestrations, cool jazzy riffs, pure excitement. Great, but no prize.......2002-03-31

The selections from the Ring trilogy, Friends in need and Fallen Angel were excellent, however, some of the special request such as joxer the mighty, seemed a little bit rushed. Wasn't that song on Volume 2 already? Where was M'Lila's song from Destiny, or the music played During the first Kiss in "The Quest"
The cd has its good points, personally "It's Over" from "THAB" with its haunting melodies portraying the consequences of war.

Xena;Warrior Princess volume six.......2002-01-09

I am so happy that the last and final cd has come out, now my collection is complete. I am very sad for the show ending, but I am glad to still collect things.

Exceptional.......2001-11-30

I am a fanatic and devoted Xenite.I have a huge problem:i can't stop listening to that cd,since the first time i listened to it,which means 1 month!That cd is really exceptional and i think that every true and genuine Xenite should buy it!It's really good!I was moved when i heard the Fallen Angel part.I was passioned when i heard the Ring Trilogy!I was astonishing when i heard the bonus cues that were included,especially the cue from The Quill Is Mightier(fishin part),oh,i was completely satisfied!
Though,there is a complain:i can't understand,why after 6 cd's,the producers don't do a cd including cues like:M'laila's song,the cues from the Bacchaen festival,music from Deja Vou All Over Again,where in the end,Gabrielle says to Xena those wonderful words,or even the scene of the kiss in The Quest!That,i can't understand it!
Last, i believe that whoever likes LoDuca's music style,should buy this cd.
Pay attention to the 22 cue:Pas De Deux Femmes.It is one of a something and whoever remembers what's the scene of this song,will agree with me!Mmmm!

A MIX OF THE BEST, THE WORST AND THE MISSING.......2001-11-29

To all truly Xena fans this CD is a must-have but have some lacks... Fun (comedy episodes music) scores destroy the the great combination of FALLEN ANGEL, THE RHEINGOLD TRILOGY AND I FRIEND IN NEED. In the first selections LoDuca creates spectacular high level music good enough to be played in a Symphony orchestra concert. The others selections have easy-to-fill-space western cowboy music instead of put M'Lilas song of DESTINY, Amazon's climbing trees of ADVENTURES IN THE SIN TRADE and NAJARA vs XENA music that would be gladly accepted by us. I doubt the company will launch a next CD but if they'll do this track and another valuable more must be there and the adittion of some famous characters quotes like "I have many skills" from Xena.

A century of British art songs to delight those who love them.......2006-06-26

These 53 songs have been collected by Naxos from their extensive acquisitions from Collins Classics, and perhaps other British sources now out of business. There's a steady cottage industry, year after year, producing the typical English art song, which is usually based on folk songs, but even in more modern idioms is profuondly conservative and nostaligic. Half these songs, not to mention half the composers, are totally unknown to American audiences, but the familiar names of Vaughan Williams and Britten represent high quality, and the lesser lights, such as Warlock and Quilter, are mainstays in this repertoire.

I'd challenge all but the most addicted listener to make it through more than ten songs at a sitting, and many of these pieces are tepid, offering comfort rather than inspiration. The singers are among the best, but Graham Johnson and Steuart Beford, who do most of the accompaniments, are lackluster. I know that won't be a popular comment, yet if you compare any of these songs with rendiitons done by Janet Baker, John Shirley-quirk, and most recently Bryn Terfel and Ian Bostridge, you immediately notice how much more intensity and drama is pesent than htis colleciton reveals.

GREAT RECORDING, BUT THE PRICE..........1999-12-01

This is 20th century opera at its most vivid. Once considered a failure, Osud was resurrected in an English translation that actually improves upon the original libretto. The music is as vital as anything in Janacek: the piece starts a churning riff strangely reminiscent of Philip Glass; the ending is equally memorable -- startlingly brusque and humorous. Throughout, we get musical drama tied to the quick of spoken language; conversations overlap, or suddenly fall silent. At times the story is ridiculous, but the production rides over any problems. Philip Langridge, as always, is great. My only qualm: this was originally a single disc CD on EMI, for a single disc price. Though the package is nice, the price is steep for some 70:00 odd minutes.

Can Mayte screech any more louder? It's obvious that this project was doomed from the start and Prince must had been on acid to write and produce this fiasco. Carmen Electra was 3 times better than this awful, poor excuse for a cd. The cd is best for shooting practice. "Ready, Shoot!"

I love this album.......2003-12-11

This album is a great production with many styles. Mayte does freestyle, ballads, dance...you can hear Indian sounds, Spanish sounds. You really feel Prince's love for Mayte here. In my view this is the best Prince female protegee album. All songs are great. Unfortunately Mayte does not have the strongest voice, but the great songs and the great production really make this album a great one. "Baby don't care" is Spanish-influenced, "Most beutiful boy in the world" is the female version of the Prince hit, "Mo better" is a nice ballad, "Children of the sun" makes you dance....it's all good :) And Prince sings on "How much U want" :)

A wonderful cd with a talented singer and artist.......2002-07-05

I do hope Mayte's next cd is a little better.But this cd has alot of Prince sound to it, so it is unique and rocks. I love "the most beautiful boy in the world" it sound way better than prince's.The best songs are "children of the sun","If I love you tonight",and my personal favorite "loves no fun' which she delivers which such great emotion.Mayte has a sexy but sweet voice,which sound great on a ballad and dance cd rather than rock/funk which is what prince is known for.And this album deserves more than 1 or 2 stars,it deserves 3 1/2 at least.I hope to hear a great house/latin freestyle with a few ballads. from this beautiful boricua.Which will give her more devoted fans,than some of these reviewers who do not really hear music.And the only reason why I do give this album 5 stars is hopefully the reviewers total, will lead to what i think the album deserves, 3 1/2 stars.

AWFUL, AWFUL, AWFUL!.......2002-01-25

Did I mentioned it's awful? What was Prince thinking letting this woman with no talent make a cd?! Is he nuts? Maybe if someone else sang the cd, a talented vocalist maybe the cd would had been better. But it seems rushed and having Mayte trying to be sexy and breathing hard and trying to hit the high notes is not my cup of tea! Don't even bother with this one!

Incredible Guitar!.......2007-01-09

I think this CD is an incredible example of how different types of guitarists can get together and create something that is very special to listen to. Liona Boyd is a fantastic classical guitarist, and Eric Clapton, David Gilmour and Yo Yo Ma aren't bad on their instruments either! Put them altogether with some great arrangements of songs, and you have a very interesting, highly enjoyable, and remarkable CD. I highly recommend it.

This has a "New Age" feel, but it's good in spite of that..........2002-10-24

I used to own a few Liona Boyd records back in the 70's and 80's, but they were limited to the classical guitar literature. I have always loved her playing...smooth and sensual. This disc originally came out in 1986, and Ms. Boyd presents herself accompanied by percussion, keyboards, strings and other guitarists. Eric Clapton joins her on one number, and Yo-Yo Ma on another. A little bit of rain and a few bird calls pop up here and there as well. The final result is closer to an Andreas Vollenweider production than to the exotica of Martin Denny or Arthur Lyman, but the core is still Liona's guitar work. If you only know her, as I did, from her classical albums, you may have to listen to this two or three times to really like it (as I did.) For hard-core fans, the disc is a must-own, and for "New Age" adherents it will be a gem. I like Liona more casually, and find "New Age" music is best in small doses. I found this at a bargain price, which makes me happier with it than I might be if I spent the usual amount a new CD costs. Still, it seems a four-star CD to me.

An excellent combination of new and reinterpreted works.......2001-04-24

In this album, Ms. Boyd demonstrates the unique ability to take another person's work and present it in an entirely different light. The best example is the piece, "L'Enfant": Vangelis (the original composer and performer) created a light airy melody that was a tribute to the New Age concept, using only a few simulated instrumental sounds. In Ms. Boyd's interpretation, however, the piece takes on a more dynamic, even primal, feel by adding in a very strong percussion background and acoustic guitar for the main melody, evoking strong imagery of the primal forces of nature at work. Regarding the few original pieces in the album, "Sun Child" is an absolute delight, bringing to mind images of parents and children playing at Ye Olde English Faire (or your local Renaissance Festival ;) ). The only major disappointments were the two "Phoenix" pieces written by Michael Kamen for Ms. Boyd, and I must also admit that the title composition, "Persona," was not as strong as I would have thought given Ms. Boyd's beautiful interpretations of other composers' works. Still, this is a good album and I highly recommend it.
