Brandy has a lot to prove. She's had five Grammy nominations; she's won one Billboard Music Award, one American Music Award, and several Image and Soul Train awards; and she's sold over 4 million records--all by the age of 19. Never Say Never enters the scene after four years of sophomore jitters and plain old fear. And it enters with a bang. Brandy's voice suggests serious vocal training from her father, and strong songs--some written by her now-19-year-old woman-child self--attempt to take R&B back to its proper plateau. The album's first single, "The Boy Is Mine," and the Mase duet "Top of the World" serve as proof that Brandy still has the chops, determination, and cuteness to take a record to the top. --Asondra R. 5 out of 5 stars Never Say Never.......2007-07-16

This is a great cd which I go back to frequently. I haven't gotten tired of it yet. I like the range of songs and vocals by Brandy and the Bryan Adams remake was well done. I hope she still releases her upcoming album despite the difficult life circumstances she is dealing with. She has too much talent and too much to share to stop now.

4 out of 5 stars Everyone keeps saying that Brandy's vocals are weak on this album. I don't really see it..........2007-07-01

I do agree with anyone who thinks her vocals between this album and her next album, Full Moon improved immensely though.

This CD is a great mix of pop and R&B and although it's not as strong as Full Moon which is her best album to date, it is still a good album to listen to straight through.

I've been listening to Kelly Clarkson's new album lately but I took a break from it today (mostly) to listen to Brandy's Never Say Never. I am still impressed with it today and think that the song "Tomorrow" is SO underrated.

Best songs:

Learn The Hard Way
The Boy Is Mine
Have You Ever?
One Voice
Tomorrow

Best to worst albums to date:

Full Moon
Never Say Never
Brandy
Afrodisiac (so overrated) a 3 star album, easily

Edit: OK, I have noticed that Brandy's vocals aren't the best now that I've listened to it closer. On Put That On Everything and One Voice she strains to hit a note. But she's nowhere as bad as Hilary Duff or Ciara are. Now if you want to talk about bad vocalists overall, please, talk about them. Especially Ciara. >_>

4.5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Absolute Classic!!!.......2007-02-24

When Brandy came out with this album a few years back, she really blew up on the scene bigger than her first self titled album. This is first of two albums featuring the now famous Rodney Jerkins. She really switched up her style and also had a hand in writing a lot on the album. This album really showed growth in Brandy as a young woman and artist. The best tracks are "Truthfully", "Tomorrow", "Almost Doesn't Count", "The Boy Is Mine", and "Angel in Disguise". There really aren't any fillers on this album you could listen to it straight without skipping any tracks. This is a classic album of heartbreak and disappointments so ladies could definitely feel Brandy on this one.

4 out of 5 stars One of the well known albums in the 90's........2006-06-06

The first I'd ever heard of Brandy was when I saw her duet with Monica, 'The Boy Is Mine' on TV. From this I became a fan of both artist. Brandy's 'Never Say Never' is a mixture of funk and gospel and is one of the few R&B albums that manages to appeal to the pop market yet retain its roots at the same time, much like Janet Jackson.

There are plenty of stand-out tracks, especially 'One Voice' (with Bebe Winans and his gospel choir) and the fantastic 'Top Of The World' with rapper Ma$e. Unlike Mariah Carey, Brandy doesn't let the rappers overpower her fantastic vocals and each song is produced neatly. One big surprise though would have to be Brandy's cover version of Bryan Adams '(Everything I Do) I Do It For You', which Bryan Adams himself said was the best cover of his famous song. Others I like are "Angel in Disguise," "Almost Doesn't Count," "Never Say Never," "Truthfully, Have you Ever?" and the cover of "Everything I do (I do it for you)."

That pretty much covers everything on the album except the so-called "Filler" tracks which include "Learn The Hard Way," "U Don't Know Me (Like U Used To)," "Happy" and "Tomorrow." According to me they are "fillers" but you should listen to them and hear it for your self. I believe she could have worked on them more, 'cause they had good potential to really make this album flow together more nicely. Other than that I would recommend this album to you, especially if your an avid Brandy fans.

5 out of 5 stars The reason why I love music........2006-06-04

When I was 11 years old listing to the radio a lot coming from school on the radio I herd this song oh the song that made me feel so emotional inside a song that oh geesh love. I herd "Have You Ever" on the radio man I was in love with the song. A few moths later my mom got it for my birthday. I ran upstars for the radio and listed to it and enjoyed it. I recommened this album to and Brandy fan and every person who loves R&B. Best of the 90's.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful value.......2007-07-25

I see people giving this album 2 and 3 stars for 'two' good songs. My question to them is, "What are you listening to?" This is a fine album so often overlooked and generally dismissed as that record with the "Brandy" song. In truth, I always loved this song and that's what eventually led me here to buy it. Hey, for five bucks that fantastic song is worth it alone! But I was pleasantly surprised when I got the CD and listened to it in it's entirety a week after purchase. What an absolutely wonderful album for only five dollars! I didn't know it was possible to get a 5 star CD for that price but it is, you simply need look no further.

For the first song, well you all know it so well so I won't go into any great detail. "Brandy" is one of the finest songs ever written. Very few songs in this world are perfect, and ladies and gentlemen this is one of them. Love it forever. As for the rest, "Jimmy Loves Mary-Ann" is probably the second best song on here as you have probably already read in the other reviews. It is very similar to "Brandy" in many ways. Good bass, good beat, and a very nice chorus. If it weren't for the existance of the title track I daresay that Looking Glass would be popularly remembered for this song instead. Two quick 5 star songs to begin with. Looking Glass trades lead singers for the next track and throughout the album creating a nice balance of voice and harmony. For instance, "Highway to Hollywood" is a more wholly upbeat track while "Are You Dreamin'" returns back to the sound already firmly established in the first two songs. "One By One" may be the only really bland track here, I just can't seem to get into it. Slower, and a little too quiet compared to the rest of this album I think. It seems out of place if you ask me. Therefore skip down to the next song "Rainbow Man", a happy, feel good tune that's suitable for the mood. "Sweet Jeremiah" kicks up the pace, injecting pure american rock and roll to the mix without comming up for air. Fast classic rock the way it should be, and "Dealing With the Devil" follows suit. A little slower than it's predecessor, it still manages to maintain that rock ballad quality. Nothing fancy, just good ole music. "City Lady" was kind of a surprise to me because it seems more sophisticated than the rest, like it's a little before it's time or something. And it has a bass line and drums that make me think vividly of some Steely Dan creation, "Gold Teeth" to be exact. This song slides suddenly but gracefully into "For Skipper", a lamenting and beautiful sea sounding ballad just suited for the seaish, coastal kind of quality that brandy posesses. A fine finish, and that's precisely the saddest thing about this album... it has to end.

Brandy is an immoveable album in music's history that somehow became forgotten along it's way. Sad really. But here for your enjoyment on CD, and honestly, you really can't find better value for a better price anywhere. Buy it now!

I received the CD Brandy in a timely manner. I played the CD and the music was clear and good. I gave the CD to a young lady named Brandy who was born about the time the song was released.
She was thrilled with the gift and I was thrilled with my purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Unappreciated Artists.......2004-12-08

"Brandy" is fine, catchy tune with a story to tell. Great song, but not all this band was capable of.
"Jimmy Loves Mary-Anne" is another of the same.
But "Sweet Something" (on Golden Classics
Looking Glass) and "For Skipper" are jazzy and breezy works of art. The folks who say that all there is to this group is "Brandy" and "Jimmy" are missing something special because their ears are tuned to Top 40 or "Classic Rock."
Pay attention! Take time to savor the talent and musical vision of this group. Don't believe these two songs are just filler (like some of their other tunes).
While this band never broke through, they deserved more encouragement for what they were capable of, the art of "Sweet Something" and "For Skipper."
Too bad that these two songs are not on the same album as they were on the vinyl release "Subway Serenade" -- which I have from the early 1970s. These two songs are timeless gems.

4 out of 5 stars Fun Sunshine Music.......2004-10-20

Another reviewer said it best, it's the kind
of music when the world was a little more
innocent, and not as jaded. "Brandy" is a
guilty pleasure, its a great summer songs that
evokes the early 1970's, the beach, and love.
Jimmy Loves Maryanne is great as well. As others
have noted this was essentialy a harder rocking
boogie band, than is evident on their big hits.
But what a time it was, I would also suggest from
the same time "Dancing in The Moonlight"-King Harvest,
"Go All The Way" Raspberries, & "Long Cool Woman" -Hollies.

5 out of 5 stars The Whole Album is Great!.......2004-02-10

While I agree that Brandy and Jimmy Loves Mary-Anne are great songs, I like the rest of the album as well. It brings back a fresher, lighter time when the world seemed like a friendly and happy place!

On her first CD in three years, the newly married and pregnant Brandy sounds confident and assured and lets us know that she has found her man (even if it takes a numbing 17 tracks). The stately ballad "He Is" shimmers with unabashed, but never treacly, adoration, as Brandy huskily sighs, "Prince Charming, my angel, my king, my friend." It's the sound of a woman in love, and that sentiment guides this satisfying CD's strongest cuts, from Mike City's tangy title track to the snaky seduction of "Apart," which burnishes Brandy's vocals with a metallic glow. Most of the CD was produced by longtime collaborator Rodney Jerkins, but he overloads Brandy's plate with bombastic, predictable beats that do little to draw listeners in. Full Moon truly glows when the intensity is muted and emotion is in the forefront. --Amy Linden

5 out of 5 stars Brandy's Phases.......2006-11-20

"Full Moon" found Brandy reaching a moment where she was ready to grow as an artist. She again enlisted Darkchild (Rodney Jerkins, et al.) to set-up the musical backdrops that caused "Never Say Never" to become one of the best R&B records of it's time. So, the question in 2002 was, did Brandy bring the goods?

In one word, yes. The arrangements on "Full Moon" divide between the stunning adult balladry & sharper, urban driven dance material. Though the sound is more dark at times, more sensual, & it seems that the transition of adulthood wasn't that hard for her.

On the dance end, you have "What About Us", the lead single. This mechanized, deep grind of a groove was the perfect vehicle for the angst of the subject of a spurned lover. The British two-step inflected "All In Me" is another highlight, & sits next to the dizzying, heavy handed bass laden "I Thought" perfectly. From the urban dance perspective, Brandy paints herself as a modern-day Jody Watley vocally & from a compositonal standpoint. There wasn't a better female empowered anthem that could move you like "What About Us?" at the time since "Looking For A New Love".

For further allusions to Jody comparions, the vocals on the previously mentioned ballads are the true treat. Sensual, probing, emotionally poignant, & convicted. While Brandy didn't handle (beyond some co-write credits) majority of the songwriting, the passion she sings with makes these songs all hers. The title track sets the compostional mood for the ballads. Harder beats, paired with violin & piano work, & Brandy's voice for organic purposes blend here. This pairing of studio wizardry & more soulful elements helps make these ballads warm & inviting.
It drives home the hauntingly spectacular "It's Not Worth It". This song features backing vocals from Michael Jackson, though credit is only listed in the liner notes, it sounds incredible. Brandy's vocals at the fore & Michael's at the back sound like Brandy singing over an old, mournful 1970's soul gem. Other notables include the fitting tribute to the P.M. Dawn classic "I'd Die Without You" (with brother Ray J on vocals), "WOW" wows in it's honesty, & the sweet come-ons that are "When You Touch Me" & "Like This" charm without effort.

Overall, despite the length, "Full Moon" is a rewarding listen. One that brings Brandy's need to connect through thoughts on matters of lonliness, unrequited love, infidelity, true love, romance, & finding oneself in another successfully. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars brandy's best work ever!.......2006-10-31

Till this day it still amazes me how Brandy released this fabulous album in 2002, and yet no-talents like ashanti were getting more attention than her. Brandy and Rodney Jerkins both hit their creative peak with this CD, which is full of r&b and pop tunes with a futuristic millenium sound to it.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic :-).......2006-10-21

As I download my cd's onto my ipod, I'm revisiting my old cd's and I came across this gem again.
Brandy has always been one of my favourites. This cd is one of her best; it's some of her most mature music. It's full of great songs and the beautiful voice that keeps getting better with each release. My favourite tracks here are Full Moon, the beautiful remake of Die Without You, WOW and the stunning Love Wouldn't Count Me Out. She is very talented and her vocal range shines throughout this great cd. If you are a fan of hers, this cd has to be in your collection. It's beautiful and I highly recommend it.

3 out of 5 stars Vocal Prowess Displayed w/ Great Production Too.......2006-10-18

In 1994, Brandy entered the R&B arena with a voice that belied her age and slick production that proppeled her to instant stardom. In "Full Moon," her third album, that same recipe for success is as prevalent as ever. Brandy has one of the most recognizable and skilled voices in the music industry today. With its emotive raspiness and impressive range, each song on "Full Moon" is given incredible depth, never overpowering the melody yet always staying the focal point. On songs like the soft "When You Touch Me," the soulful thump of "Like This," and the swaying, Eastern-influenced gem of "Apart," Brandy's skill as an interpreter of song is beautifully displayed. She takes commanding possession of each lyric, infusing creative riffs and runs throughout the song to make it undeniably hers. Tracks like "He Is," a soothing ode to a faithful lover, and the feel good, I'm-better-off-without-you anthem "Wow" display her strong lower register that furthers shows Brandy's vocal control. For singers, Brandy is a great model to follow.

It doesn't hurt that the production is impeccable either. Rodney Jerkins and company create a sonic delight, such as with the ethereally pulsating title track or the technological wonder of "What About Us." Each song seamlessly transitions into the next, creating an album that is enjoyable to listen to and admire from beginning to end

...well, almost. While Brandy's voice is certainly at its best, and the production is top-notch, "Full Moon" isn't without its fillers. Songs like "Can We," "Anybody," and "Love Wouldn't Count Me Out" seems like unneccessary additions to an otherwise great R&B album. Nevertheless, Brandy's "Full Moon" is an influential album for aspiring singers and avid music lovers who admire soulful vocal creativity and skill, and for those who enjoy great musical arrangements to accompany such undeniable talent.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Album!.......2006-06-08

This by far my favorite album all of time. Brandy does it again! EVERY song on this album is a hit... From start to finish! Her sound is so mature and it demands your attention. I really enjoy how she stayed away from the cookie cutter songs other artists like her always put out. I recommend this album to everyone who is a fan of R&B, Pop, Rock, Hip Hop, or any type of Music! Thank you Brandy for an awesome album!

5 out of 5 stars The legacy of Brandy begins! (4.5 Stars).......2007-06-29

I agree with another reviewer in stating that the mid 90's was the best time for urban music. With the likes of solo artists (Brandy, Monica, Aaliyah) and groups (TLC, Silk, Boyz II Men) ruling the r&b AND pop charts, who could argue? Brandy's debut is the epitome of that glorious time for urban music.

Spawning no less than FOUR huge hits ("Baby", "Best Friend", "I Wanna Be Down", "Brokenhearted"), Brandy became an instant bestseller, selling 4 million copies and still counting. Who could resist the irresistible grooves, the sultry-driven vocals, and most importantly, Brandy's sweet innocence? She was the entire package and the public responded warmly to her.

But enough about Brandy and the public response. What really sells this album, IMO, is the album tracks. And there are plenty to name. My personal favorite is "I'm Yours". This is quite possibly the best track on the album (even though "Brokenhearted" is a very close second). Brandy displays so much power and conviction into this song. It's a wonder it wasn't release as a single. Other highlights include "As Long As You're Here" (a smoky, midtempo tune reminiscent of jazzy rap), "Love Is On My Side" (a syrupy ballad also as charming as "Brokenhearted"), and "Give Me You" (a great closer to an otherwise stellar album).

In sum, Brandy turned out an very impressive debut album. Sometimes, you forget that she was only 14 at the time of release. Amazing huh? But believe it or not, better records would turn up for Brandy as her career took off (Never Say Never anyone?). However, this one has always been my personal favorite so I am biased in my review:). You know it. You love it. Get it if you don't have it.

This album waz a great way 2 start off her carriere, and a great way to show off the mid 90s beats. With such hits like Baby, Best Friend, I Wanna Be Down, Brokenhearted (pretty much the whole album) The soulful legend brandy kills this album ( in a good way) with her smokey little girl vocals which will certainly make u happy on a dark day. this album has both slow and fast songs to fit whatever mood u may be in. The single
Brokenhearted for example is a great song for those who have lost a girlfriend/boyfriend.This is also a great album for fans of 90s music, even those who are not big fans of brandy. Great for rainy days, i give this album 10 out of 10.

Album Description

Multimedia phenomenon Brandy rose to superstardom in the '90s while only in her mid-teens, and was one of the decade's most successful new talents. Her string of smashes soared to the heights of the R&B and pop charts, as did her top-selling albums. The young recording artist and actress also reaped major acclaim in the television world with her hit sitcom Moesha, and the starring role in Disney's beloved TV adaptation of Cinderella.

Many of them bring back memories of when I was a senior in high school on the verge of graduating. While the other hits just bring back memories in general(LOL). Why skip any track on this CD? All I can say is that it's off the chain. If you don't have it, go get it!

4 out of 5 stars Best Of Albums Always Have One Good Song Missing........2005-08-06

I love this album. Brandy is great and very talented. I didn't enter a fifth star, becuase Sitting Up In My Room isn't on here. That would have made this absolutely the best. All the other songs are great though and you'll love this.

5 out of 5 stars List is Wrong.......2005-08-01

There is no song called "He Is" on this album. And "Sittin' up in my room" is on this album but is not on this list.

The Album is great!!!!! I love both songs that were remade: Rock With You and Paradise. They were great.

If Roast Beef of Old England isn't enough to spawn a dose of contact scurvy, many other of these two dozen salty tunes will set the boat a-rocking. Treasures such as "A Jolly Sailor's True Description of a Man-of-War" and "Drops of Brandy" detail life among British seamen of the early 1800s without dredging up too much of the usual pirates, shipwrecks, or mutiny. It's an historical document of the regular life at sea, inspired by the British Navy novels of Patrick O'Brian, with intentions to anchor the writing in the ordinary sounds and stories of those fictionalized seafaring times. Glad fiddle, fife, and Jerry Bryant's humble six-man choral crew Starboard Mess spill the beans in suitable fashion without a sailor's colorful vocabulary. They supply the "yo ho ho" and annotations, you bring the rum and black powder. --Ian Christe

4 out of 5 stars Set Sail With These Great Songs.......2007-01-28

Jerry Bryant and his Starboard Mess offer up to the listener some wonderful performances of traditional British sailor tunes. They are all performed acapella, and despite other reviewers saying that these songs lack spirit, I find that there's plenty in store. Pennywhistle and fiddle songs are also thrown in and do nothing but add to the enjoyment of this album. Read your favorite Jack Aubrey novel or other seafaring tales such as "Treasure Island" while listening to this album to truly enhance your literary experience. My personal favorites include "Spanish Ladies" and "Bay of Biscay-o."

You should see the looks I get from the little wannabe thugs in their tricked out Hondas listening to hip-hop when I pull up next to them in my conservative white Toyota Camry and I'm belting out lines like "We'll rant and we'll roar like true British sailors...." Jay-Z can't even hold a candle to these wonderful old tunes.

Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Jack Aubrey would have loved it..........2007-01-09

This is the real thing! It takes some time to get into these songs...but then I started to join in. For someone reading O'Brian its a MUST.

4 out of 5 stars Good traditional stuff.......2007-01-05

Just what I was looking for, some traditional British songs from the age of sail. I recomend this for anyone with an interest in British maritime and naval history.

5 out of 5 stars Continuing Enjoyment.......2006-05-05

I've owned this CD for a few years now, and it hasn't become stale yet.

Being a 'younger' person with generally 'younger' preferences in music, and yet still a person thoroughly devoted to Patrick O'Brian and all his works, on first listening I was doubtful.

Another two or three spins around the CD player, though, and I was hooked. Crisp, clear and obviously as historically accurate as they can be, these songs give delight even now.

Best use? Volume dialled up to eleven for the morning drive to work, bellowing along at the top of my voice - and often the bottom of my range! Heart of Oak, Roast Beef of Old England, The Shannon and the Chesapeake - uproarious. Sailor's Jacket is the foot-tappingest instrumental; it still sets my toes a-jumping. And the sweeter songs? Give them plenty of wellie .. Adieu Sweet Lovely Nancy is fabulous.

Other big numbers: A Jolly Sailor's True Description of a Man-of-War, A New Sea Song (Sweethearts & Wives) - which has some fabulously 'historically accurate' narrative within (POB readers will know whereof I speak! ;-} - and Distressed Men-of-War - another song referred to within the POB Canon.

Heartily recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD!.......2005-10-28

I am very impressed with the quality of this CD. The sound is clear and the tones perfect. It was a surprise just how familiar all the song is! They are very vivid and worldly. I bought this CD with out knowing what was on it; I was truly surprised and happy with it. My 6th graders will enjoy learning to this CD, and as well as singing the songs to complement our reading of Treasure Island.

5 out of 5 stars Lush and Sultry!.......2007-06-01

Dolores Gray, fabulous, Tony-Award winning (for a show which ran on Broadway only 1 week!) star of stage and Fifties screen, gives beautiful renditions of standards on this, her only studio album. Somewhat of a cult figure (for all the Right reasons!), Gray was a strong vocalist in the tradition of Ethel Merman, fully capable of projecting over and above a big Broadway orchestra and to the very last row of the balcony in those pre-amplification days; she needed no body microphone to be heard distinctly and clearly. This album was a departure for her: soft ballads, lushly orchestrated, and sung in a sultry, whispery, close-to-the microphone voice. The selections are romantic rather than melancholy, and are perfect for a candle-light dinner, or a relaxing soak in the tub after a hard day.

While this album has been on cd before, first as a Japanese import, then as part of EMI's British two-albums-on-one-cd series, this release is crucial for the addition of several singles Gray also recorded for Capitol, including a great (and different) rendition of one of her signature songs, "There'll Be Some Changes Made", which she sang in the MGM film "Designing Woman." Her costars in that production, well worth seeking out on DVD, were Gregory Peck, Lauren Bacall, and in his only onscreen appearance, Broadway and Hollywood dancer-choreographer Jack Cole.
Looking forward to Decca Broadway hopefully re-issuing her Phillips LP "Dolores Gray Live at London's Talk of the Town" on cd!
Designing Woman

4 out of 5 stars welcome back, Miss Gray!.......2007-03-18

Broadway star...movie actress...Dolores Gray had many hats during her long showbusiness career, but the talented songstress only recorded one album, under a brief contract with Capitol Records. WARM BRANDY makes it's compact disc premiere here, and no doubt many people will be anxious to grab it.

To the hardcore Broadway musical fans, Dolores Gray is one of the all-time classic voices. She rose to fame playing the title role for the 1947 London production of "Annie Get Your Gun", then got cast in Broadway's notorious flop "Carnival in Flanders". Gray moved to Hollywood in the mid-1950s, where she snagged roles in the M-G-M movies "Kismet", "Designing Woman", "The Opposite Sex" and "It's Always Fair Weather". Mainstream movie fame alluded her, and she returned to Broadway to star as Frenchie in the musical version of "Destry Rides Again", and later played Lorraine in the ill-fated "Sherry!". Gray replaced Angela Lansbury in the 1974 London production of "Gypsy"; played Dorothy Brock for the Broadway and touring productions of "42nd Street", as well as Carlotta in a 1986 London revival of "Follies". She sadly passed away in 2002.

During her time with M-G-M, Gray recorded a series of singles as well as her WARM BRANDY album for the Capitol label. Here on this compact disc from DRG, her entire Capitol output has been compiled for the very first time.

WARM BRANDY features a mix of musical theatre favourites and jazz standards, and Gray wraps her velvet chops around each and every one of them. Highlights include "You Go to My Head" (sung in an arrangement that'll definitely go to YOUR head!), "You're Getting to Be a Habit With Me" (a 1930s chestnut), and "Shangri-La" (another exotic number which works well with Gray).

The series of bonus singles will also thrill the long-time Gray fans: "There'll Be Some Changes Made" (from the "Designing Woman" soundtrack), "Fool's Errand", "I'm Innocent", and "My Mama Likes You".

The remastering job for WARM BRANDY is a little muddy in places, but the selection of bonus singles are as fresh as paint.

5 out of 5 stars At Last....Dolores Gray at Her Finest.......2007-03-18

This jazzy collection of ballads contains the album "Warm Brandy" and all additional sides recorded by Dolores Gray at the height of her fame in 1957. Long out-of-print, this is a pristine example of this premiere vocalist who has unjustly been largely forgotten. Dolores Gray was primarily a Broadway performer (check out "Two on the Aisle" and "Destry Rides Again" as two Original Cast Recordings that showcase her at her finest). She had a voice for the ages, superior to Merman and all of her contemporaries. Unfortunately, her tempestuous nature undermined her career but what she left us is of the highest quality. She worked briefly for MGM (her Lalume in "Kismet" is definitive) and displayed a natural flair for wry comedy that was never fully utilized. Our loss.

Still, it is that magnificent voice that remains eternal and "Warm Brandy" is quite an unusual foray for Gray. Here, she eschews the roof-raising sound that was better than the "Merm" for a gentler, jazzier approach to some classic material. Quite a sophisticated album, "Warm Brandy" displays the broad range of Gray's instrument and her exquisitely warm and nuanced interpretations are the antithesis of that famous "belt". One can't imagine Merman or any of Gray's contemporaries pulling this off so effectively. From the gentle opener "Shangri-La" to the sultry "How Long Has This Been Going On", Gray shows she's got the goods. Her pitch, phrasing and intonation are perfection itself, but it is her interpretive ability that makes these songs live. "Speak Low" may be definitive, and "Don't Blame Me" smolders with her special brand of sexy cooing. As a bonus track (one of four) we get "There'll Be Some Changes Made", a brassy piece of dynamite from Gray's last movie, "Designing Woman", and Gray shines in her most familiar element.

Still, "Warm Brandy" is class in every respect and deserves to find an audience who'll rediscover the immense talent Ms. Gray possessed. Let us never forget.

After a breakup, childbirth, and a reality show, the one-time teen star finds herself growing up a little more on Afrodisiac. While this isn't a concept album--the songs aren't ordered as such--it's filled with the frustrations and pleasures of Brandy's past few years. At the same time, her vocals are richer than ever, reaching a Blige-like level of expression on "I Tried" and "Who is She 2 U." Timbaland's production on nine cuts anchors the disc; he even makes the title track's sampled baby, a link to his classic work on Aaliyah's "Are You That Somebody," belong. The biggest triumph, though, is "Talk About Our Love," pop-soul from Kanye West that could come straight from the summer of '74, even including his rap. Further release comes with Timba's "Sadiddy," an anthemic celebration of being out on the town with a carload of friends. The girl may be older, but she still knows how to have fun. --Rickey Wright

Album Description

Afrodisiac is sensuous, soulful, even a little gritty, an album that showcases Brandy's passionate voice and announces in no uncertain terms that she's all grown up and knows what she wants. The hot first single, "Talk About Our Love," was produced by and features Kanye West.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Change of Heart.......2007-03-06

When I heard this CD when it was first released, I felt that it was a huge disappointment. The only song I really liked was Turn It Up, but I have since had a change of heart and added this to my collection. After giving it another listen (well, a few more listens actually), I have found that it's a decent effort by Ms. Norwood. Some of the lyrics are still really silly..."everything he eats I cook," "have 3 or 4 kids by you and some more if you ask me to." And Sadiddy, that album filler she so desperately doesn't want to have, is just that. Otherwise, I'll give it a C for Afrodisiac, Should I Go, Turn It Up, Who Is She To You, Cool, Focus, and Where You Wanna Be. I wonder now with all of the controversy surrounding her whether Ms. N is still wondering if she should go or should she be looking for another record deal. Never Say Never is still her best effort. Brandy is #2, Full Moon #3 and this would be my least favorite.

5 out of 5 stars A good CD that was Underrated!!.......2007-02-25

This was one of Brandy's best albums and was seriously not promoted correctly. There were a number of tracks that could've been released as singles and I think the controversy of her "so-called failed marriage" and her ex going on the air on Wendy Williams dishing the dirt on Brandy really effected sales. But for the real Brandy fans, they will not be disappointed. Even though she strayed away from long-time producer Rodney Jerkins, Timbaland picked up the slack and took her a long way and gave her some bangin' tracks. The best tracks are "Afrodisiac", "How I Feel", "Say You Will", "Thought It Would Be". Some tracks that you could skip over would be "Sadiddy" and "Turn It Up" otherwise this album gets a thumbs up. Can't wait for your next album

5 out of 5 stars Won't be let down.......2006-11-23

This gal knows how to pic her songs and make the most of her voice. This album showcases some of the hottest new beats as well as her silky smooth voice. You won't be let down by any of the songs on this cd. She has great smooth, love songs as well as slamming dance tracks by producers who know how to make catchy music.

5 out of 5 stars Entertaining CD!!!!.......2006-10-19

I just joined Columbia house and got this album from there. It gets 5/5 because I can listen to it from start to finish without feeling the urge to skip songs. My favorite tracks are Afrodisiac, Who is she to you?, Talk about our love feat kanye west, I tried, Focus, Sadiddy, Turn it up (club banger), Come As You Are, Finally and Should I go. That's most of the tracks on the CD. My overall favorite song is Finally.
'Where you wanna be' sounds like a song from puff daddy and the family's no way out album - TI raps on this one and his rap is tight. 'Should I go' is cool because she is contemplating her place in the current music industry. The beats are sick. The Timbaland-produced tracks are blazing. This album is 100% entertaining and Brandy's voice sounds great.

5 out of 5 stars Definitely The Best Album Of Her Career! One Of Timbaland's Best As Well!.......2006-10-07

After listening to "Afrodisiac", singer/actor Brandy's 4th studio effort, I can't help feeling sorry for her. This is one of many stellar R&B CDs that commercially make it nowhere due to lack of promotion or just flat-out neglect on most of the public's part. "Afrodisiac" is more than just an artistic statement - it is the sound of a maturer, stronger, vocally more powerful and emotional Brandy taking risks with her music while still remaining real with it. Once again, reigning super-producer Timbaland is the main person to thank for delivering with the production on 9 of the album's 15 tracks. Other producers include Kanye West, Organized Noise & others. Sean Garrett's pensive genius also blesses this record with spectacular results.

While Brandy may have only lent her actual helping hand to one of the album's 15 tracks in terms of songwriting, Brandy not only sings the material with a lived-in feel, but the material itself was obviously related to her in the 1st place. "Who I Am" is an emotional ballad where Brandy finds strength after a bad relationship with lyrics equally compelling as her actual voice. Album track favourite "I Tried" is a heavy-hearted ballad where heavy synthesizers, faint guitar strings & closing violins emphasize Brandy's emotional struggle with an unfaithful lover whose misdeeds she tries to neglect, but in the end, refuses to put up with (in other words, she eventually leaves). "Finally" is a ballad that, while lighter with the production, is equally passionate and emotional with the same purpose of making the right decisions & leaving a bad relationship. "Come As You Are" uses more revealing lyrics, Brandy's vulnerable vocals, Timbaland's bouncy production and breathy background vocals to create a song about her rough transition into womanhood, and how she searches for a man who's equally mature.

Considering how deep every track on this album is, highlights come down more to one's opinion on each track's quality. In this case, many of those highlights go to the actual singles. Lead single "Talk About Our Love" is a beautiful, slightly up-tempo ballad with a lush groove, courtesy of guest artist Kanye West. The song itself talks about not worrying about the gossip and rumours other people say about them, and to just keep on showing love to each other, despite everyone else's perceptions of it. Second single "Who Is She 2 U" is another slightly up-tempo ballad where Brandy begins to frustratingly question her man's intentions with another woman who caught his eye. Piano keys, flutes, violins strings, ethereal choir background vocals and catchy drum patterns provide a perfect sonic backdrop for Brandy's sultry vocals & the expectedly impressive lyrics. Timbaland's killer minimalist beat on the title track (which samples from Aaliyah's "Are You That Somebody") is equally infectious, while Brandy professes her drug-like love for another man with breathy sexuality. Other non-single highlights include the emotionally furious club banger "Saddity" and "Should I Go", a stellar ballad where Brandy contemplates all kinds of things -whether or not to leave the industry for her family, remembering the days when it just her, Monica & Aaliyah, etc.- with pensive lyrics & airy vocals over a well-chosen sample of Coldplay's song "Clocks".

Altogether, "Afrodisiac" is a wonderful studio effort that deserved more attention and success than it received. To this date, "Afrodisiac" remains the best album of her career, and is a testament to both her artistry and longevity in an endlessly fickle music industry. 5 stars!
