Rio is the prominence of being a political commander as well as a musical phenomenon. He went from being born and raised living poor in the ghetto projects of Chicago, to many years later finding himself being a symbol of urban African American culture. Songs from the Street, the boxed set that stretches back to "Sesame Street's" 1969 debut, is the kids' record of the year, if not the decade: Big Bird and the gang might've pulled it off themselves--for a crew of fix-it store workers, shopkeeps, and goofball monsters, the talent quotient's off the charts--but when you've got this many names to drop, they've got to land somewhere. What impresses most in three discs is the lack of a single thud. Cab Calloway, Pete Seeger, and James Taylor mosey in on disc one; Johnny Cash, BB King, and Tony Bennett take seats on the stoop for disc two; and the Dixie Chicks, Gloria Estefan, and R.E.M. raise the brownstone roof on disc three--and that's leaving out stars like Lena Horne, Stevie Wonder, Billy Joel, and Trisha Yearwood. When it comes to inspiring preschoolers and their parents to sing the praises of rubber duckies, bein' green, and the people in their neighborhood; "The Street" gets busy. --Tammy La Gorce

This set of 3 CD's had a great mix of classic and contempary Sesame Street songs.

About half the songs are the original television versions. But the liner notes for the other half list them as being "from" other COMPILATIONS released in the 1990s.
Nowhere is it stated whether those compilations used the original versions or re-recordings, so who knows? Even the TITLE theme is not the original (It might be the version they use nowadays, but it's not the version most people know from the 70s).
Sesame should have just used the original TV versions of all tracks as that's what collectors of vintage material would be looking for (and paying quite a lot for).
They also should have focused more on the early years when the show was the most innovative. And as music was a major element, I'm sure there's a lot more material that could have been used, particularly those odd demonstrational songs about the number 5 or the letter R. Instead they've focused on the celebrity guests, most of whom don't really add much value.
I personally hoped there'd be that funky counting to ten song that featured on almost every episode (not the Pinball one, which I love too).
Disappointing, but until a better option comes along, this will have to do.

A great buy, you'll play this over and over........2007-03-15

I bought this when my daughter was born, and two years later she still asks for them to be played. The set contains three CDs, on which are collected famous songs, and ditties from the Sesame Street show...favorites like C is for Cookie, Healthy, Happy Monsters performed by famous groups like REM and more. The songs are not just kid friendly, adults will enjoy the refreshing take on some old favorites too:)

An All-Round Pleaser.......2007-02-15

I have always loved the music from Sesame Street, and as I have gotten older I have found that the next generation loves it just as much as I have, whether it be the older or newer songs. Since I bought this album, I have had it regularly playing at my sons' request. Funnily enough, anyone who walks in to our house smiles when they hear the music, ask what the album is, then sit back and enjoy it all - regardless of whether they have ever watched Sesame Street or not. Furry and real voices have universal appeal whatever the age of the listener! A beautiful album.

If you grew up on Sesame Street - or just want some music for kids that isn't annoying - this is the box set for you! The songs are clever, amusing, lively, and educational. We bought it for ourselves as a trip down memory lane before our son was born - and since then it has been our favorite baby shower or first birthday gift! Everyone who has it loves it!

The successful TV series The Wonder Years could be viewed as the ultimate in baby boomer narcissism, a nostalgic generation marvelling at how special it once was (try running that notion by a child of the Depression--or a Gen X'er). Whatever the reasons for its success, the show's musical soundtrack at least tried to reinvent some of its inherently shopworn '60s staples by letting contemporary artists cover them: The Indigo Girls tackling the Youngbloods' "Get Together"; The Stones' "Ruby Tuesday" covered by the son of a late rival, Julian Lennon, "Baby I Need Your Lovin'" given a strange sort of respect by "Was (Not Was)." And for a little modern nostalgia, how about two tracks by (including the saccharine title) by Debbie Gibson? --Jerry McCulley

Many customers have chosen to give this CD a poor review. In response to them... This CD is wonderful. It reminds me of loading in the back of my parent's car with my brother and sister and driving to the Florida coast for summer vacation. So the songs are not the orignial. Big deal. It contains memories for me and I am proud to have it in my collection. An amazing show...an amazing CD!

A difficult one.......2005-11-16

Although I liked the cover picture and could never give 1 star to anything connected to the Wonder Years, I have to say I was more than a little dissapointed to discover that Fred Savage wasn't singing all the songs. A wasted opportunity.

A good old classic .......2005-11-07

These songs are really good. My favorites are Ruby Tuesday, and Baby I need your loving. I have listened to this crusing down the highway with the windows down and brings back old memories. It is worth buying, don't expect a Gem, but expect some good classic songs.

This CD is not Wonder Years!.......2004-06-27

I bought this CD to listen to one of my favorite songs from the show and what did I get nothing. It doesn't even have the songs that were in the show. It's just songs that they just copied from various oldies CD's. There are maybe a few songs that were in the show in there but most of them aren't. It's a good thing I get to hear the score piece in there it's beautiful but the rest of the songs sucks. Don't even waste your money on the other Wonder Years CD's because most of them are the same as this one. Good thing I got my Kazaa to look at the list of songs that were in The Wonder Years so I can make my own instead of buying these crappy CD's.

Puzzling song selection makes this a CD for WY fans only.......2003-09-28

As a huge fan of The Wonder Years, I was overjoyed when this soundtrack was released, but unfortunately it barely resembles the type of soundtrack I had envisioned at the time. The whole concept of this particular album is puzzling at best, as only a smattering of these songs were ever used on the show, several of them are inferior recordings by someone other than the original artists, and not one of the songs that really and truly define this wonderful television series are to be found here. You do get the show's theme song, Joe Cocker's version of The Beatles' With a Little Help From My Friends, but the album begins to lose focus as early as the second track, an unnecessary cover of Baby I Need Your Loving by Was (Not Was). This pattern continues itself throughout the rest of the album. On the positive side of things, Buffalo Springfield's For What It's Worth (Stop, Hey What's That Sound) is a welcome track, as it provided a most memorable opening for the show's second episode; other highlights include CSNY's Teach Your Children, Van Morrison's trademark Brown Eyed Girl, and Carole King's Will You Love Me Tomorrow.

The remaining tracks beg for some sort of explanation. The Escape Club's Twentieth Century Fox not only varies considerably from the other songs collected here, it has nothing to do with The Wonder Years or its era. The Indigo Girls do a good job with Get Together, but why do we have their version instead of the original? Having Julian Lennon perform the Stones' Ruby Tuesday is sheer madness. Then there are the two Debbie Gibson tracks; I for one have always liked Debbie Gibson, and I know that she was a big Wonder Years fan (Danica McKellar actually appeared in one of her music videos), but most people enjoy her rendition of In the Still of the Night less than I do, and even I would prefer to hear the original version of the song. Gibson's second track, Come Home, is actually a song she herself wrote many, many years after the time in which the show was based.

In the end, I can only recommend this soundtrack to devoted fans of The Wonder Years, as a select few of the songs do bring back memories of the show. For the casual fan, there's little point investing in an album that contains so few original versions of classic songs.

I got involved with JJ Niles by watching Scorseses Movie about Bob Dylan.
Dylan himself got influenced by Niles and his aproach to folk music.So I
bought this Disc without hesitation.First of all it is music for listeners which haven't lost their abiltiy for music so deep and rich,as it can be.Niles's voice is like this of an angel.But be warned there is no music to dance or snap or listen while driving on the highway.Take your time and get moved forever.Highly Recommended.

Essential folk artist.......2007-02-01

John Jacob Niles, "The Dean Of American Balladeers," influenced many who came after him. He was both a musical preservationist and one of the most unique performers of all time. During the 1920s, Niles collected and published Appalachian mountain songs such as "Barbara Allen" and "Pretty Polly." He also wrote "I Wonder As I Wander" and "Black Is The Color Of My True Love's Hair." "Go Way From My Window" was penned by him at age 16, yet Niles never performed it until 22 years later. These three compositions are some of the many highlights on: THE TRADITION YEARS * I WONDER AS I WANDER.

Around 1960, John Niles performed on NBC's TODAY Show-- I saw him that morning. Although a very little child, this man's lovely counter-tenor voice and unusual dulcimer really registered with me. About a decade later, I found a scratchy LP copy of this very same album in a thrift shop and it immediately became a favorite.

This high quality CD reissue brings back memories and is a joy to listen to. Recommended for all lovers of traditional folk music.

Oh, Very, Very Good.......2006-03-10

I am so happy to see this reissued. I had a two record collection by Niles on vinyl but lost it over the years. Now so great to hear him sing again. I'm hoping someone will release his ballads in one set so I can once again enjoy his rendition of these great songs. The reviewer who described his voice as "fallen angel" was oh, so right.

Rare American folk connoisseurs rejoice! Finally re-issued on CD are the long awaited Tradition label recordings of John Jacob Niles. If you saw the recent Dylan documentary by Martin Scorsese, you won't forget the clip of Niles singing Go Away From My Window. This is a CD of Carols and Love Songs recorded in 1957 (Rev-Ola will be re-issuing My Life in the Public Domain, ballads culled from older 78 rpm recordings later this month, which we'll list when we get it).

Niles, old beyond his years, accompanied by handmade dulcimer, had an intense other-worldly fallen angel like voice that perfectly captures the hauntingly lonely and creepy hill country feel where the bulk of his catalog of songs originated. Niles, like Jean Ritchie, was a folk musicologist and performer from Kentucky who spent his time wandering through isolated American mountain communities collecting folk songs, or scraps of melodies and lyrics, embellishing them with his own inventive arrangements and often fleshing them out by writing additional verses. For example, his version of "Black Is the Colour of My True Love's Hair" has become the definitive arrangement for all versions following (from Nina Simone to Patty Waters), because while he loved the verse he disliked the original tune. This is why folk historians have had a famously difficult time classifying which songs in Niles repertoire are originals or reinventions of songs in the public domain. Some people may be turned off by Niles high-alto voice (At times he can look and sound like the evil preacher man in Poltergeist II), but don't let that hinder you from exploring the work of a true American folk original whose recordings have finally been made available to folks who cannot afford the hundreds of dollars his albums go for on eBay. Fans of Devendra Banhart, Joanna Newsom, and Anthony & the Johnsons take note!

An imperfect but must-have collection for Wonder Years fans.......2003-09-28

This 5-CD collection of songs from The Wonder Years and the era in which the show was based is a must-have for devoted Wonder Years fans. It is easy to find fault with some of the tracks collected here, and some of the show's most important, memorable music is absent, yet this collection does bring back vivid memories of the good times spent with Kevin, Paul, and Winnie while continuing to touch hearts with some of its more impressive offerings. You get 50 songs in all, 10 of which are exquisite Snuffy Walden compositions written specifically for the show - these tracks, much more than the top 40 type songs making up the remainder of the album, are the real magic key to some of the best of times from The Wonder Years. Among the most notable tracks to be found in this collection are My Girl by the Temptations, Smoke Gets in Your Eyes by the Platters, Ain't No Mountain High Enough and Someday We'll Be Together by Diana Ross & the Supremes, The Tears of a Clown and The Tracks of My Tears by Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, and With a Little Help From My Friends and You are So Beautiful by Joe Cocker. An eclectic mix of contemporary songs rounds out the remainder of the musical selections, and these can be hit or miss at times.

All Wonder Years fans could write volumes asking why certain songs were not included on these albums. My own list of the tracks that should be here but are not would begin with In My Life by Judy Collins, When a Man Loves a Woman by Percy Sledge, I'm a Believer by The Monkees, Tell It Like It Is by Aaron Neville, and There's a Kind of Hush by Herman and the Hermits. Episode 37, "St. Valentine's Massacre," is in my opinion the most important episode in the show's five-year run, yet two critical songs (Jimmy Ruffin's What Becomes of the Broken Hearted and the Marvin Gaye-Tammi Terrell duet You're All I Need to Get By) from that greatest of episodes are not here, and that's a shame. I could go on and on, as could any fan. In the end, though, we must feel blessed by what we have rather than moan about what we lack, and there truly are some great classic songs in this set that will have extra special meaning to those who considered The Wonder Years as not only a favorite television series but a part of our very lives.

Essential Wonder Years.......2002-02-13

Even if you've never seen The Wonder Years, then these CD's are worth it for the music, from the tingling MY GIRL from The Temptations to the origional music there is something for everybody. Anybody over 35/40 will enjoy the classics of the era. If you've followed the TV series then you can almost see the scenes played out whilst listening to the music. There are some great songs missing like Percy Sledge - When a man loves a woman and Bob Segar - We've got tonight.

Don't be fooled by 5 CD Box Set.......2002-01-15

Don't be fooled by the advertised 5 disc box set. Each disc contains an average of 29 minutes of music. This "Box Set" could have easily been condensed to 2 discs. There are repeated selections of "Original Music From The Wonder Years" throughout all five discs. The same "Original Music" is on every disc!

While the song list is impressive and welcomed, the recording quality is poor. It sounds like the label, "LaserLight Digital", did this "on the cheap." Some of the songs sound like they were transfered from a used LP, with pops & scratches. I was astounded at how poorly this set sounded.

I liked "The Wonder Years" and hoped that this soundtrack would reflect the quality of the show. The song selection did. However, as with the poor reviews concerning the quality of the DVD & VHS copies of the show (also produced by LaserLight Digital), the public is being short-changed with this collection.

For those wanting a similar collection of songs from the same time period, I would recommend the soundtrack to "Forrest Gump."

NOSTALGIC HEAVEN.......2001-11-10

This was the one show on TV,in Ireland, in recent years that my wife, sons,daughters & I would watch as family. I being a child of the 60's could connect with the story line and needless to say the music was magic. However until I heard these CD's I had overlooked the 'Snuffy' Walden instrumental music ,which I now realise is so thematic and is very memorable. The other issue here was that Kevin was so like my youngest son and we could identify a local girl with Winnie. He was teased something terrible about this and still likes to think of himself as Kevin -whenever the reruns are on TV . As he turns 21 in a few weeks I will no doubt slip in some of the WY music to his party list !
A real memory spinner for people who enjoyed the little bit of weekly escapism that (was) is the WY's.

Wow, man. I'm back in the 70's!.......2001-04-21

Oh my... that really took me back to my youth. I loved it so much. Every day, when I'm working in my shed, I listen to that CD and think a little about all those years I've left behind. I really do miss them. Times have changed since I was a young wee gal, they've changed alot. I'm sure everyone would agree that a chance to have your youth back is a chance to take! Buy this CD, and you'll go back thirty years!

Great for renewing your love for The Wonder Years.......2003-09-28

Volume 1 of the Wonder Years music collection, First Love, features some wonderful music sure to evoke wonderful memories of those who came to love the television series as much as I did. Snuffy Walden's two musical pieces are particularly special, expressing quite beautifully some of the show's most touching, emotional moments. They are joined by one other instrumental track, Paul Mauriat's impressive Love Is Blue, which anyone should recognize immediately even if the artist and title don't ring a bell. This collection can't boast quite the number of pop music classics that others can, but who doesn't love to listen to Marvin Gaye's How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You), The Temptations' My Girl, and Diana Ross and the Supremes' Someday We'll Be Together. Throw in Joe Cocker's emotional You Are So Beautiful, and you have the foundation for a terrific album, which is only augmented by Spanky and Our Gang's Like to Get to Know You and the Mind Benders' A Groovy Kind of Love.

Somewhat surprisingly, to the best of my knowledge only four of these songs (excluding Snuffy Walden's original compositions) were ever actually used in the show: Marvin Gaye's How Sweet It Is, Cocker's You Are So Beautiful, The Temptations' My Girl (which played an especially pivotal part in the classic episode 17, "Nemesis"), and the Supremes' Someday We'll Be Together. Still, all ten tracks on this album evoke the unique era in which the show was set and bring to mind those magical days spent with Kevin, Paul, and Winnie. Winnie fans should also know that the liner notes of this CD feature a wonderful picture of Kevin and Winnie from the premiere episode.

I only have one question. Why isnt the song "when a man loves a woman" on there? It is a TOTAL wonder years song!! They play it all the time in the show! I love that song, so, even though this is a greeat cd, i took off a star for that song.

Plenty of Motown songs..........2000-06-21

I did like the CD. I thought some of the songs were good. I definately like "How Sweet It Is" and "My Girl." It has quite a few Motown songs and some slow songs. I love the show Wonder Years which is why I bought it. It is a good CD for people who like love songs and Motown!. All in all it was a cute CD and I would recommend it to any Wonder Years fan! It really reflects the quality of the show and is fun to listen to at any time because the music varies so there are many different moods. A great buy!

I was looking forward to hearing these cds for some time... The Wonder Years would have been nothing without those poignant songs, which enabled us to actually feel the same emotions that the characters were feeling... This is where I discovered the beauty that is JONI MITCHELL and she's nowhere to be seen on any of the cds!!!!

A fun but nonessential album for Wonder Years fans.......2003-09-28

Volume 2 of The Wonder Years collection, Good Friends, Good Times, speaks to the happy memories of all the fun shared with childhood friends, but I consider it the weakest of the five CDs in this collection. These songs evoke no vivid memories of The Wonder Years episodes in my mind, nor do most of them reflect the very spirit of my own memories of all the good times spent with Kevin, Paul, and Winnie. The album certainly does start off with a tune of joyous camaraderie, though, in the form of the infectiously uplifting United We Stand by the Brotherhood of Man. It also closes quite impressively, with Joe Cocker's version of The Beatles' With a Little Help From My Friends (which served as the series' theme song). In between, there's just a hodge podge of different sounds and styles. Donovon's acoustic Catch the Wind bears some similarity to Bob Dylan in style and sound, making it one of my favorite songs on this album. I also get a kick out of blues legend Muddy Waters' Hoochie Coochie Man and Chuck Berry's Johnny B. Goode. Others may well enjoy The Champs' Tequila and The Surfaris' Wipeout, although I personally count these among the most annoying songs ever recorded.

When it comes down to it, this CD just seems to lack something important, and its disjointed assembly of songs has little to do emotionally with The Wonder Years television series. Even the two original compositions by Snuffy Walden seem to lack focus and meaning. Certainly, there are several good songs to be found here, but I definitely rate this volume of The Wonders Years albums lower than its counterparts.

A great buy for fans of The Wonder Years.......2003-09-28

All five volumes in The Wonder Years collection are a little uneven, but Movin' On boasts some really great classic tracks that far outweigh the weaker songs scattered throughout the album. Roger Miller's Little Green Apples is just awful to my ears, but The Turtles' Happy Together, Bryan Hyland's Sealed With a Kiss, and The Four Tops' Walk Away Renee are all certified classics. Even they pale in comparison, though, to not one but two of the greatest songs ever released by Smokey Robinson and the Miracles: for me, this album is worth having for The Tears of a Clown and The Tracks of My Tears, especially if you don't have any Smokey CDs in your personal collection already. These two songs also call up some great early memories for this fan of The Wonder Years television series. Tears of a Clown was played at the dance on episode 6, the final episode of the show's memorable "preseason," while Tracks of My Tears can be heard on episode 16. Happy Together was featured in both episodes 40 and 70, Sealed With a Kiss appeared in episode 114, and Walk Away Renee was featured in episode 109. As far as I know, Little Green Apples, Maureen McGovern's The Morning After, and The Moody Blues' Tuesday Afternoon (Forever Afternoon) were never used in any episode of The Wonder Years.

Of course, any Wonder Years fan knows that Snuffy Walden's compositions are the true heart and soul of the show's great music, and this album contains two beautiful little pieces of music that easily take you back to those magical, halcyon days spent with Kevin, Paul, and Winnie.

Nice little selection--worth the money, though I'd suggest buying the entire 5-disc set. Brought back some memories when I heard these songs, and I'm thrilled to own it.

I grew up with Sesame Street and bought this to 'share the joy' with my son. I love it and he is starting to love it too (seriously). There is also a really great little book that comes with the set that explains the idea behind Sesame Street which is lovely.

I am a proud owner of this cd box set, and all of the gems that I haven't heard since I watched Sesame Street are on here ie: Ladybug's Picnic, King of Eight, Sing After Me, as well as my kid's fave song, Furry Happy Monsters by REM.
If you buy this for either yourself, or for your children, you will not be disappointed.

An eclectic mix of songs from The Wonder Years.......2003-09-28

Volume 3 of The Wonder Years collection, Cruisin', features a sometime eclectic mix of songs that are fun and unique and thereby, so the thinking goes, perfect candidates for the type of music Kevin and Winnie might have listened to as they cruised the streets of their suburban landscape of their teens. Heck, it's still fun to cruise around to songs such as Judy in Disguise today. These songs are best enjoyed in moderation, as too many listens to tracks such as The New Vaudeville Band's Winchester Cathedral, the Chordettes' Never On Sunday, Edwin Starr's War, The Cowsills' Hair, and Steam's Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye can become somewhat annoying over time. Wake Up Little Susie, made famous by The Everly Brothers, doesn't really fit into this collection in my opinion because it is a great song that I could never grow tired of hearing. My favorite song on this CD, though, has to be Judy in Disguise by John Fred and His Playboy Band; it is truly one of the classics that speaks volumes of the era in which it was written and performed.

The two Snuffy Walden compositions included on this CD are beautiful, but more significant Walden pieces can be found on the other four volumes in the Wonder Years collection. Only two of these tracks really evoke vivid Wonder Years memories for me. Never On Sunday goes back to episode 23, "How I'm Spending My Summer Vacation," which fans will recognize as the very important season one finale. Blue Cheer's Summertime Blues is significant for its inclusion in episode 114 "Summer," which was the next to last episode of the show.
