Forgotten - now I know why........2007-04-10

Occasionally one hears of a movie or some recordings that have been 'lost' or just denied to the public. I can think of several movies recently that were 'allowed' to be viewed by the public. Neither of these movies proved to be worth the wait.

The Forgotten Recordings are such a case in point. Mahalia Jackson was one of the greatest singers ever and I was very happy to find these recordings previously unknown to me. Sadly, they do not do the great singer justice. The original recordings were poorly made and do not 'shimmer' as do all of her other recordings. I am very disappointed.

I do not blame the company that produced the recordings or anyone else for these disappointing recordings - I blame myself for thinking/hoping that these 'forgotten' recordings would be as good and as exciting as her others. I think that 'The Forgotten Recordings' should just stay 'forgotten'.

I suggest that if you are thinking about buying these albums that you look for better albums by this wonderful singer.

Amazing recordings!.......2007-02-23

For years out of mind I've had the three L.P.s that held these recordings and they have been some of my favorites by Mahalia. Ms. Jackson migrated from New Orleans to Chicago in the late thirties to run a flower shop. She was taken under the wings of the legendary Willie Mae Ford Smith and recorded prolifically for Bess Burman's Apollo label where she eventually found great success. Her hard work paid off when she was signed to Columbia in 1954. It is, I believe, between the mid-fifties and early sixties that these recordings were made. No recording dates or information was given on the albums, which were French imports, so I don't know where they came from. However some of them are magnificent and range from there to good. That said, there are some stand outs that are well worth mentioning. Blessed Quietness is a strong standard written by the oft underrated Doris Akers. Mahalia is completely at ease and fully confident on this number. A pared down recording of Somebody Bigger Than You and I evokes the spirit of the Apollo recordings and is probably one of the earliest recordings in the group. Tom Dorsey's Hold Me is done at a faster pace than the 45 version and doesn't quite match the jazz/blues feel, but it shows that, like her jazz counterpart, Ella Fitzgerald, Mahalia never sang a song the same way twice. She handles Lord, Don't Move That Mountain like the pro she is, giving a nod here and there to Inez Andrews. Roberta Martin's He Knows Just How Much We Can Bear is done in her usual dignity and respect for the gifted songwriter. Mahalia's own standards are generously revisited here as well as some surprises. Thankfully, Irving Townshend's production wasn't there to get in her way and that made for some truly amazing recordings! It's just a shame that we don't know where or when they were recorded.

An Essential Medtner Recording.......2005-03-31

Nicolai Medtner, a contemporary and friend of Rachmaninoff, is perhaps the greatest composer for piano since Beethoven. A virtuoso concert pianist of the highest caliber in his own right, Medtner composed relentlessly tonal piano music of great beauty and intense rhythmic complexity at a time when atonal music was coming into vogue in the Western art music world. Although stunningly beautiful, his compositions were thought to be too "old fashioned" in the West and so were brushed aside by "serious" music scholars, causing Medtner to live in poverty during his exile in the West following the Bolshevik Revolution. Nevertheless, Medtner's Russian musical contemporaries fervently admired both his compositions and his piano playing; Glazunov even called Medtner something like "The Guardian of Eternal Art."

This CD presents for the first time Medtner's earliest commercial audio recordings, made for Columbia Records in 1930/31 but never released. These are transfers from Medtner's own test pressings on shellac discs; the original masters were long since destroyed. Lovingly cleaned up and restored, these recordings are the real deal, an authentic revelation of Medtner's interpretive intent in his compositions (compositions which have no established performance tradition in the West). Not only do they represent an invaluable resource for pianists who wish to tackle Medtner's compositions, they are wonderfully enjoyable to listen to, tremendous recordings of some of the most beautiful music I have ever heard.

Now, obviously, these are archival, not modern, recordings. The restoration presents them beautifully, but they are still cleaned up transfers from questionably preserved 78s so don't expect perfect clarity.

Aside from Medtner's own compositions, the disc also includes Medtner's performance of one Beethoven piano sonata, no.23 in f, op.57, which is masterful.

Listening to Medtner's piano playing is like opening a door into a vanished world, the Late-Romantic musical world from which sprang Artur Rubinstein and Vladimir Horowitz. Listening to this recording, I feel like I am touching the 19th century directly. The wild variations in tempo and dynamics in Medtner's piano playing are a revelation, both enraging and delightful simultaneously. Modern Western piano performances seem both self indulgent and rhythmically square in comparison. And Medtner's own music... Stunning. Fantastic.

This is an awesome recording which I listen to again and again. Highly Recommended.

The forgotten artist.......2005-10-07

Aimee Mann seems to be one of those artists whose work unfortunately gets lost in the mainstream shuffle (not that that's necessarily what she was going for anyway). Still, this album, The Forgotten Arm, shows that the former `Til Tuesday frontwoman still has what it takes to make good music.

In case you don't know yet, this is a concept album that channels through a couple's somewhat troubled relationship. I didn't realize that at first, but it really doesn't matter because I can still pick out standouts like "That's How I Knew This Story Would Break My Heart", "Dear John", and one of my favorites, "Going Through the Motions".

"I Was Thinking I Could Clean Up For Christmas" is also pretty good, although I really don't think you should use the "F" word in a Christmas song. My only other concern is that "I Can't Get My Head Around It" made me say just that. Looking past all that, though, it's obvious that The Forgotten Arm is another entry for Aimee's list of great albums.
