The Irish Tenors' fourth album sees the trio of Anthony Kearns, Ronan Tynan, and Finbar Wright paying a sentimental musical tribute to Ellis Island, the hallowed landmark that met the majority of immigrants entering the United States at the beginning of the 20th century. Needless to say, the Tenors' repertoire this time around is full of reflective ballads of love, loss, and homesickness, including the original "Isle of Hope, Isle of Tears" that opens this disc. Throughout this studio recording, the Irish Tenors are in fine form and backed by a soft-hued orchestra that never interferes with their soaring vocals. Traditional tunes include "My Wild Irish Rose," "How Are Things in Glocca Mora," and, of course, "Danny Boy" (the last sung by all three tenors, with refreshingly simple solo piano accompaniment). Thankfully, the threesome didn't forget that the immigrants had fun, too, as evidenced by some lighthearted fare; "The Courtin' Medley" features the Tenors at their most upbeat and comical. Ellis Island is a moving aural portrait of the struggles and triumphs of the Irish émigrés and a must-have for fans of the threesome. Newcomers may enjoy the Tenors' debut disc even more, as the earlier live album is a slightly more upbeat and spirited affair. --Jason Verlinde

5 out of 5 stars Three Cheers for the Irish!!!.......2007-05-30

A glorious concert in a historic setting, with all involved in top notch form. Finbar finds a great old Johnny Cash number, Ronan sings a Glocka
Mora to end all, and Anthony Kearns sings murderously difficult versions
of Macushla and The Croppy Boy like an angel. And their Courtin' and Irish
Medleys, and their "Nation Once Again" trios are simply glorious glees.

With the benefit of a grand theme, this is perhaps the best, and best balanced, of all their programs.

5 out of 5 stars Ellis Island song brings tears to my eyes.......2006-03-17

This magical album crosses oceans and centuries and puts me in touch with my Irish ancestry. The title song tells a story similar to my greatgrandmother's and even though I've heard it many times now, I still weep for her.

5 out of 5 stars How Are Things In Glocca Morra?.......2004-04-16

Long a fan of Irish music, I have turned to a series of artists to satiate my appetite. Bing Crosby and John McCormick have been succeeded by the Irish Tenors.

This CD has a bit more of an Irish American theme as "Isle Of Hope, Isle Of Tears" and "God Bless America" illustrate. Interspersed among these tunes are traditional Irish tunes such as "Macushla" and "Croppy Boy", along with newer songs, such as "The Green Fields Of France" and "How are Things In Glocca Morra?"

The singing is excellent, the words understandable. I appreciate the inclusion the lyrics of the songs contained on the insert of the cover. These are songs you will want to learn, whose stories you will want to research. I have. Listen again and again!

I think this is best CD since Live in Belfast! it also has 2 songs not included on the video! it's a unique album of how the immigration to Ellis Island and New York turned out. It also has songs of the war such as The Green Fields Of France (The Best One) or, the croppy boy. I would recommend this to anyone!

Dimitri Hvorostovsky, born and bred in Siberia, has Russian folk music in his soul. So do about 100 million other Russians, of course, but they don't have his magnificent voice. When his artistry is joined with that of the Saint Petersburg Chamber Chorus, the result is hard to beat, especially when the arrangements were made by such composers as Shostakovich and Rimsky-Korsakov. Don't expect happy songs, although some of the offerings on this disc, such as the title song "Kalinka," have their rollicking passages. In characteristic fashion, the lyrics dwell plaintively on laments for lost love or melancholy recollections of the Russian countryside. Unusually for a Russian chorus, the Saint Petersburg ensemble is not dominated by the lower-pitched male voices but by the women, blissfully free from stridency, who swell their cadences in the way so typical of Russian liturgical music. The disc is accompanied by the Russian text and a useful English translation, although both suffer from minor errors. --Ed Killham

    5 out of 5 stars Delighful Hvorostovsy.......2007-03-31

I heard the CD Kalinka. I've never stopped admiring this wonderful Russian bsritone. I went to his concerto here in Mexico, several months ago. I was in Heaven

The songs are chosen with care and love, and it reminds me always of my so wonderful stay in Russia (3 years). This really is from "Russia with love". The thrilling voice of Hvorostovsky gives me the chills and makes me dream. Thanks for a wonderful and delightful record.

This Cd is not the "academic" version of the Red Army, pleasant as well. This is fresh, bucolic and belongs to the people that are in the enourmous fields of corn in Russia and Ukraine. It is naive, with the beauty of naivite.

Hvorostovky is versatile and in the songs que needs to be sweet, plassionate or melancholic he achieves it masterly!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars The Power of Voice, The Music for the Soul .......2005-05-09

Listening to these eighteen Russian folk songs, artistically arranged and vocalized, one feels that the musical border between folksong and opera has somehow been melted away, and what are heard are the best aspects of both. There is something very special in Russian folk music. Dmitri Hvorostovsky and St Petersburg Chamber Choir have grasped the spirit of it with their heartbreaking vocal force. Whether it is the melancholy melodies; the somber harmonies; or the primordial elements, they pierce directly through your heart and get to your soul... Simply wonderful!

5 out of 5 stars a cup half full, but still splendid.......2004-05-22

With his rich and powerful dark honey voice, Dmitri Hvorostovsky is one of the greatest operatic baritones alive, and as an interpreter of Russian music, no singer can top him; his exquisite renditions of folk melodies, as well as the rapturous songs of Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninoff on his other recordings are sublime.
Here he is backed not by an orchestra, but by St. Petersburg Chamber Choir, and together they present a superb collection of traditional melodies.

Unfortunately for those of us who are big Dmitri fans, he only sings on 10 of the 18 tracks, and though the chorus is excellent, his magnificent voice would have made these songs even better; the "chorus only" tracks are 4-5, 8-10, 14, and 16-17.
The popular title track, "Kalinka", has probably been included in practically every film with a Russian theme I have ever seen and is instantly recognizable, and some of the others are rare gems, but all of them will be enjoyed by anyone who appreciates Russian music.

My absolute favorite is the final "Vihaztu adin ya na darogu" ("I set off alone down the road"), which with its beautiful melody and soulful singing is glorious. Dmitri recorded this song for his first CD of folk songs in 1991, with the Ossipov Russian Folk Orchestra, with balalaikas instead of a chorus to back him; both versions are wonderful, but with this one having the edge, as I think he sings it on this recording with more emotion.
    Total running time is 56'41.

5 out of 5 stars Here is proof that Russian vintage only gets better with age.......1999-06-06

Dmitri Hvorostovsky has outdone himself, which means his admirers are in for a treat. Maturity only adds depth to his interpretations of Russian folk songs, now on a larger scale than on the earlier CD 'Dark Eyes'. His musicianship is such that he blends in perfectly with the superb St. Petersburg Chamber Choir whenever this is called for. Marvelous stuff here - highly recommended.

    4 out of 5 stars Excellent.......1999-05-14

Worth congratulating Philips that here (as in several more recent releases) "Russian Text" really means that, in cyrillic not transliteration. Timing 56'40.

A Film Maker Could Always Rely on Mancini to Deliver a Composition that Hit the Mark for a Film and Conveyed Exactly What was Required and More. He also Filled the Role of an American Mantovani, Recording 'muzak' Versions of Popular Hits. He was Handsome, Personable, but Most of All, Well Respected for his Craft.

3 out of 5 stars not enough Galway.......2003-10-02

There are only four songs with James Galway. The way this recording is presented is misleading and buyers should be aware that this is NOT a joint effort between these two great artists.. I was totally disappointed. I think Henry Mancini is wonderful but was expecting to hear a collaboration. So if you're looking for flute music this isn't it. However it's a great collecton of Henry Mancini's work.

5 out of 5 stars Too Good to Last.......2000-03-03

I heard this on PBS. Galway and Mancini may be two of the most talented musicians of our century. Galway for his complete mastery of the flute and Mancini for his ability to arrange , produce and in this instance direct the orchestra while Galway performs. They do several duets of a comical nature as well. This is important because it is one of Mancini's last efforts prior to his unfortunate passing.

Arrangements by David Phillips. The opening track, "Ave Maria Medley" features Robert singing with a ladies choir that begins with the Gregorian Ave Maria. It then goes into the Bach Gounod- Ave Maria and then back to the Gregorian Ave Maria. Then it goes to the Schubert Ave Maria and ends with the Gregorian. This is a gorgeous arrangement you will love listening to. I am not Catholic, I'm Baptist, but, I simply love this CD. The music is beautiful. I really enjoy listening to it, my favorites have to be "Mother Dearest Mother Fairest," "Immaculate Mary," "Hail Queen of Heaven," and "HAIL HOLY QUEEN!" I first heard the song "Hail Holy Queen" in the movie Sister Act (Funny Movie!), and I love the song. I've heard different versions of the song from different singers and choirs, but Robert & Robin's version takes the cake! Great music! Catholic or non-Catholic, you will love this music if you like Christian/Marian hymns. JESUS RULES!

This brand-new recording of Christmas music from the Tabernacle Choir is marvellous. Recorded on their own "Mormon Tabernacle Choir" label, this is the choir's first recording of seasonal music, and it surpasses any previous holiday release that the choir has made.

Using the music of both John Rutter and the arrangements of Mack Wilberg, "Sing Choirs of Angels" enjoys a wonderful flow from track to track: from the propulsive "Fum, Fum, Fum" to the sublimely meditative "What Sweeter Music"; from the majestic "Oh Come All Ye Faithful" to a brand new music and lyric setting of the gentle "Still, Still, Still" there is something here for everyone. Listening to this recording brings a warm holiday spirit into my heart and home.

Recorded in the Tabernacle at Temple Square in Salt Lake City, and using the versatile Orchestra at Temple Square, the choir and orchestra sound luminous and warm; these new recordings truly are miles above anything the Choir has done before - the polish and feeling that they bring to these new recordings are stunning.

The booklet that accompanies the CD is beautiful as well, with full color photographs of traditional Christmas symbols, full lyrics, track by track commentary, and a glossary of what each Christmas symbol means. This is a quality gift to give to friends and neighbors to help usher in the Christmas season. Unreservedly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Best Christmas Album Ever.......2007-03-25

I grew up listening to The Joy of Christmas and the music means so much to me and to all of us in our family. Mother always loved the traditional, classical forms of Christmas music, which this album provides. I admit that the music brings back so many wonderful memories, as our family would play it while trimming the tree, decorating the front room, relaxing by the fire, wrapping presents, and while opening presents on Christmas Day. The music truly is beautiful and inspiring. I hope all people have such wonderful memories to hold onto, as I do of my family and of this music during Christmas time. I love you Mom and Dad; you're always in my heart.

5 out of 5 stars Nice CD for the holiday season........2007-03-16

This is a quite different sounding Christmas CD to a number of others I have reviewed in recent times. The music is wonderful and the choice of Christmas songs is quite traditional with the exception of the "Animal Carol" which I must confess is unfamiliar to me.
The combination of the late Leonard Bernstein and the fabulous Mormon Tabernacle Choir is quite something.
Recorded in 1963 when LB was principal conductor of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, the album has all the hallmarks of the Bernstein "sound" with varying changes in tempo and phrasing so characteristic of LB. Recorded in Salt Lake City, possibly in the Mormon Tabernacle, the album is rich in beautiful orchestration and superb choral splendour. The unmistakable sound of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir is what makes the difference to this CD.
The director of the choir was Richard Condie at the time this recording was made and had a very different sound to that the choir has today. The familiar soprani vibrato is much in evidence on these tracks which today has all but disappeared and to my ears at least, for the better.
As one would expect with any Bernstein recording this CD is full of passion and drama. Just listen to track 12, "La Virgen Lava Panales",a most beautiful traditional Mexican carol.
This album is much more in the classical style than many other Christmas CD's and unless you are into the classical genre it may prove a little on the "heavy" side but it is a lovely album.
The Mormon Tabernacle Choir is now arguably the greatest choir in the world and sounds quite different under the directorship of Dr Craig Jessop who has now removed the very strong vibrato sound and introduced many new and beautiful harmonies through his assistant director, the brilliant choral and orchestral arranger and composer Prof Mack Wilberg. This Christmas album to be honest, now sounds quite dated but that is only down to the immense improvement in the sound of the modern day Tabernacle choir. There is also plenty of wonderful orchestral music on the CD in the form of Tchaikovsky's lovely Nutcracker Ballet Suite which is a Christmas classic in itself.
From classical composer Engelbert Humperdinck's Hansel and Gretel comes the "Childrens Prayer" and last track on the CD is the rousing "Hallelujah Chorus" from Handel's Messiah with the Westminster Choir.
These last additional tracks are wonderful performances as one would expect from Maestro Bernstein.
My only criticism of Bernstein's conducting is that on occasions he tends toward the frenzied speeding up of some pieces, especially I notice in ballet music. This is evident in the "Overture" of the Nutcracker Suite on this CD.
This is a very good album and is well worth the asking price - there is a lot of wonderful music for the money.
Thank you for reading my review and I wish you much happy listening to your music.

    1 out of 5 stars Won't Play.......2006-03-06

I ordered two copies of this CD, one for me and one for my daughter. It will not play on my CD player, a Technics model. We have never had anything like this happen before. My spouse took the CD to a neighbor's home and was able to play it on his player. On the strength of that, I gave my daughter her copy. I have no idea whether she has tried to play it or not. My guess is that she won't until next Christmas. She is overworked and that won't be a high priority. In case you are wondering, our CD player continues to work well, playing all our other CDs.

5 out of 5 stars Among the finest.......2005-10-22

Like many others on this page, I grew up listening to the original recording. It always started the Christmas season in our home. How wonderful to find it again on a beautifully remastered CD! Can't wait to send a copy to my parents. There are many, many great tracks here, but quite simply, you should own this recording for "Away in a Manger". It is magnificent, soaring, tender, almost heartbreakingly beautiful. This arragement has stayed with me for 40 some odd years. I can assure you that you'll never hear a finer version. Buy it!

    5 out of 5 stars I was there...........2005-08-07

In August or September of 1963 I received a call from my high school music teacher. They were looking for a small audience to act as acoustic padding to soak up some of the reverberation of the Salt Lake Tabernacle. Get down there quick, he said, Bernstein's recording with the Choir. I went and sat through the first of two sessions for this recording. It was fascinating. Bernstein came out and greeted us remarking that he always remembered his concert in the Tabernacle because "it was the loudest applause he had ever heard" (the Tabernacle itself lending to that amplification). He launched right into "Joy to the World" making adjustments to the freshly finished arrangement. All the arrangers were present. The ink wasn't dry on their manuscripts. The NYP would sight read through them a couple of times, Bernstein would adjust, and they'd do a take or two. The Choir had been preparing for many weeks. The sessions weren't entirely smooth. Bernstein was an entirely different personality than their long experience with Ormandy had been. Bernstein demanded precision. He usually got it by the final take. The album was released in less then two months. Eventually it "went gold" -- unusual for 'classical' albums of the time. I started playing it in October, 1963. There hasn't been a Christmas since that these wonderful arrangements and the memories of that summer haven't graced our family's celebration. It's advent on CD was late but most welcome.

You may find hints of the P.M. Dawn past here--soft-spoken raps, dreamy vocals, and mellow grooves--but with song titles like "Misery in Utero," "I Hate Myself for You," and "Screaming at Me," you probably won't be set adrift on memory bliss. It wouldn't be P.M. Dawn without the usual musings on the universe and musical innovation, and J.C. (the production brains of the duo) doesn't disappoint, swerving from spare, acoustic ballads to slinky electronica with barely a breath in between. There's even a decidedly Beatlesque influence, especially on "Hale-Bopp Regurgitations," an apology for all the sins in the world (including the shooting of John Lennon). If this deliciously conceived concept album is any indication, it sounds like the birth of Prince Be's son may have brought him happiness, but not without a little apprehension. Fans of the psychedelic duo will xprobably approach this record with the same mixed emotions. --Rebecca Wallwork

    4 out of 5 stars Out with a bang.......2004-12-22

Whereas PM Dawn's music had in the past been sad and insightful, their 1998 (and likely last) studio album is downright depressed, if not angry. The songs sound different, too. The stunning opener, featuring the London Philharmonic Orchestra, is like nothing the duo had ever put out before. The singles "I Had No Right" and "Faith In You" are moving stories of loving regret and unshakeable companionship and understanding. Overall, though, the theme of the record is disappointment, seemingly in everything (himself, relationships, society, the record business). "Hale-Bopp Regurgitations" is a clever poke at the world, with a lot of '90s nostalgia. Harmonies and acoustic guitar/piano accompaniment help make a lot of these songs feel very intimate, almost coffee-house performances (notably "Screaming At Me," and the heartbreaking "Broken." For sheer innovation, check out "Untitled," a nearly 9-minute opus consisting of 3 completely different songs intertwined.

5 out of 5 stars A relatively obscure CD that deserves its place in music.......2004-09-14

First off, if you're not a PM Dawn fan-you should be. Sublime lyrics, harmonies, and melodies. Most people know PM Dawn for "Set adrift on Memory Bliss", "Paper Doll", or "I'd die without you", and that's about it. A shame. It's a shame because people are missing out on one of the best artists of our time. They continue to make albums like this---quality pieces of work. Stay away from "Art Deco Halos" and "Hale-bopp regurgitations" which sound like they belong on a Beatles album from the 60's, and you'll enjoy EVERYTHING ELSE. The clear masterpiece on the album isn't "Being so not for you", the single that was released, it's "Untitled"...an 8 minute, 36 second EXPERIENCE.

5 out of 5 stars Has there ever been an album like this before?.......2004-07-18

This is they're last full length commercial release. They released a thousand or so copies directly to fans of another album. But they were forced to stop because of sampling/legal issue's. Dearest Christian... is beautifully honest and very well crafted smooth pop music. Original lyric's, beautifully arranged music. I wouldn't say it is dark...just very sad at times. But there is so much that breaks through that keeps it from ever becoming dark. The album ends with Prince Be talking softly and candidly with his son whom is trying to pull him away from his work in the studio... "Are you finished with you're la la's da da?" ... "yeah, I'm finished with my la la's." very sad ending. All the stores I've checked over the last year or so have even pulled they're P.M. Dawn tags from the cd racks. If this is they're last effort. It was they're best.

    4 out of 5 stars Different Levels.......2002-11-07

I still hold their first album of memory bliss and paper dolls as the best album. This CD is also good, for the words they speak in their music, each and every track s worth listening to

4 out of 5 stars you'll be sorry for not hearing this album sooner.......2002-07-24

PM Dawn explodes the slew of vocal bands out there for what they are- a bunch of boys. PM Dawn follows in the stem of Steveland and this album does not disappoint. Do not be turned off by the religious character of the album title. The first four tracks will have you on your knees thanking the almighty for the beauty of it all and this album.

    5 out of 5 stars Deeply Endearing.......2004-12-14

I was 7 years old and excited as all get out for Christmas when my stepfather brought this album into our family, and it immediately became a classic. This is by far my favorite music to listen to during christmas time. While carols become slightly stale as you grow older, the melodies and performance from this album are timeless, enchanting, historic and carry deep meaning. Now that I'm 33, I appreciate these performances even more, if that is even possible. A true gem. When I discovered it here on CD, I was so excited I telephoned my whole family to let them know.

    5 out of 5 stars A one of a kind Christmas Album.......2004-12-01

A friend gave me this album - on a 33RPM record! - over 20 years ago and it has remained one of my all time favorites. Words defy the magic contained in it. You will be transported back hundreds of years. I cannot laud enough the Boston Cantata's attention to details and professionalism in the playing of original instruments, the old English readings, and the incredible vocals, especially the countertenor on "Gabriel's Prophecy."

    5 out of 5 stars Simply Fantastic........2002-11-12

This has been my favorite holiday album since it first came out some nearly 25 years ago. It has *definately* stood all tests of time.

5 out of 5 stars Not just for the holidays!.......2001-10-10

This one's superb. I was absolutely thrilled to see it on CD a few years back (I had the LP). "Medieval Christmas" may sound a little...sullen, or something, but ho ho, this one is different. Sure it's early music, one of the best early music CDs I've heard, and I have many, but it fits the spirit of the holiday season perfectly without being preachy, or overtly Christmas-like. I bought a few copies for friends and they say they like it so much, they play it year 'round.

That's a heck of a recommendation for a Christmas CD, eh? I really don't know what makes this one so special. All that I know is that it's a 5-star production, and the "Renaissance Christmas" I would give only 3.5 stars. It doesn't pack as much of a wallop. So grab this one, folks, and enjoy. From me to you I love this CD!

5 out of 5 stars Superb cd - well selected, well performed.......2000-09-18

This collection of Medieval Christmas music has a wonderful mixture of pieces - Hebrew cantillation, Old Saxon readings, plainchant, processional music - with varying countries of origin - Spanish, Provencal, French, Italian, German, English. The net result is a varied program that will appeal even to those not particularly familiar with Medieval music.

The musical instruments are period instruments - rebec, viola da gamba, flutes, recorders, shawm, etc. They are well utilized in the service of the words. The Boston Camerata is, as usual, a well trained choir - the words are clear, the voices blend beautifully.

This can be an excellent addition to your Christmas music collection - one that helps keep Christmas a religious holy day rather than just a civil holiday.

To anyone who appreciates choral music, or even some of you who only like to listen to it during the holidays, this is the album for you. The music is so familiar, but so aesthetically pleasing to listen to. The choir sounds clear and majestic from the clear sounds of the basses to the beautiful pings of the sopranos. Forget the garbbled sounds of Choirs with people who think that singing in Forte the whole way through is beautiful. This is angelic, yet very fun to listen to. Enjoyment for the whole family. 5 Stars

Of note are Stephen Paulus' rhythmic "The Holly and the Ivy" and Praetorius' beautiful "Lo, How a Rose E'er Blooming" arranged by Jan Sandström. I highly recommend this recording.
