4 out of 5 stars Gotta Get!!.......2007-04-24

The first release of the now famous OM LOUNGE series. This first of 10-plus cd releases is chock full low bpm, full-a-funk, grooves. The formula used in these productions has never wavered. The producers have taken inspiration from every corner of the planet to offer the listener a very satisfing musical journey. Sitars from India are juxtapozed seemlesly into an Afro-Caribbean rhythm...Bhuddist chanting draped over a throbbing beat of the conga drum...European violins soaring over South African souka and more. The experience is quite uplifting and refreshing. I highly recommend the entire series of; Om Lounge. You can't go wrong with these. Bon Appetit.

3 out of 5 stars Wallpaper music let down by the stars.......2000-07-02

Modern lounge, sonic wallpaper, downtempo, middle tempo music (according to the CD) whatever you want to call it, OM Records excels at releasing it. A quick look at the artists on this comp- Thievery Corporation, Jazzanova, Mark Farina, Julius Papp, to name a few - should make it a no-brainer pick-up. But not so, they actually have the mediocre songs that clog up the disc.

Most the tracks use a similar formula: lazy beats, vocal snippets, strings, and dashes of funk on top. When the artists add to this with clever sounds and more intricate production it works. Freakniks' "Slow Roll 77" is what you are hoping to hear, an autumn-cool track of layered percussion, stereo samples, catchy loops and effects. "Nothing Can Pull Us Apart" dips into the vinyl vault for gentle pieces of rhythm and a powdery beat, the sound of stargazing. J Boogie's Dubtronic Science's "Oceanic Lullaby" takes strings, a Japanese koto (?), and even some Rakim samples for another winner.

But it's the bigger names that let this down. Reliable Thievery Corporation are disappointingly bland, and like Jazzanova's contribution, use an annoying vocal to mar the tune. Mark Farina and Julius Papp are decent, but they've done better. The remaining tracks range from decent filler to low blood sugar funk jamming.

This is respectable, with a few sublime tracks, but those looking to see what OM has to offer should get OM Lounge 2, a more varied and exciting collection.

5 out of 5 stars AMAZING COMPILATION.......2000-05-09

I could listen to this CD a thousand times (getting there) and not be tired of it. A perfect mix of mid-tempo tunes. The whole damn OM Lounge series in amazing (vols. I - III). This is coming from someone who owns about twenty "chill out" type CDs. The OM lounge series tops my list, but Serve Chilled from Hed Kandi is great, too, as are the Cafe Del Mars. Happy hunting!

5 out of 5 stars Relaxing and yet sexy..........2000-01-10

I'm ordering this CD today after hearing it only once, that's how impressed I was. A bunch of very talented jazz artists got together and set a groove that reminds me of Erykah Badu.

Fatboy Slim and Paul Oakenfold, two of the most famous DJs in the world and kings of big beat and house, respectively, are supremely showcased in this double-CD collection. The Essential Selection, Vol. 1 glorifies each mixmaster's equal, yet mutually exclusive talents in roof raising. The back-to-back discs are an enlightening example of the yin and yang of club music; Fatboy Slim's grounded, drier, giddier expressions of overlapping funk and disco juxtapose Oakenfold's spatial, entrancing continuum supplemented with buzzing, flatulent bass lines, and celestial synths. Both DJs are experts in flow, building beats seamlessly into climactic moments of frenzied, adrenaline-fueled euphoria, then swinging the vibe down again with the subtlety and patience of a free-falling feather. No doubt Fatboy Slim is known for his deliberate lack of subtlety stylistically, but when placed in this context, immediately compared to Oakenfold's ethereal grooves, it's evident that Stormin' Norman possesses copious finesse. Because of their stylistic polarity, like platinum and gold, these DJs shine with matched but multihued brilliance, and like soil and sun, are indispensable components of a diverse dance music ecology. --Beth Massa

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Oakenfold's finest trance.......2006-04-24

The Oakenfold disc of this set is the epitome of trance.

Certainly Oakenfold's finest trance CD, with Tranceport in second place. The track transitions are seemless [like in Tranceport], so you can just put the CD in and go into, for lack of a better word, a trance. Soothing but with a lot of energy.

You can't call yourself a fan of trance and not hear this.

2 out of 5 stars Only half good..........2006-04-14

Fatboy just makes a lot of rhythmic noise! Very bad for your heart if you'd ask me. Oakenfield way more melodic. So definitely don't go for the new, but choose the cheaper used

5 out of 5 stars I'm sure you've heard it all...........2004-12-02

Yes yes you've heard it all about Oakenfold being a sell out and everything from A to Z.. and how most techno is all dated and there is always something wrong with mixes, and true to this also, but it's still good music, Fatboy's mix is really housey ( kindof in a Fast paced 1-2 min song Housy kinda way, not like a digweed house way ) Fatboy does tear it up though, his cd is really up beat and great for driving to, although it does leave the listener wanting more,, maybe something deeper.... oh yea there is an Oakenfold cd to.... I really didn't think to much of oakie's mix for a couple of years.. Now it's almost 2005 and i've heard tons of different mixes, and when i went back and heard his cd it really amazed me. the song selection stuck in my head and i couldn't forget the tune of the songs. it's progressive and has a different vibe than any of his other cds. Of course there are a few boring and too long songs on here, but when you listen all through, it really is worth owning. the last 4 songs on the cd are truly incredible 5/5 stars with nothing wrong there, and the first like 6 songs are probly 3-4/5 . sure you can call him what you want but this cd is good.

3 out of 5 stars This is Comical!!!.......2002-10-25

Boy, do I love this. Fatboy Slim tears it up on his CD, Oakenfold continues to put me to sleep!!! All I have to say is, if you have the extra money to drop on these CDs, buy it for Fatboy Slim's Disc. Truely one of his better...

4 out of 5 stars Two genres, two discs, two different moods.......2002-09-28

First of all, if you've never been exposed to electronic music, buy this double CD set. It is a rarity among dance mix compilations since it includes two popular but very different styles of dance mixed by two of the biggest DJs in the world. Almost all other dance mix sets contain one style exclusively, so this album is truly a 2-for-1 deal.
If you happen to be an electronica guru, this compilation may not whet your thirst for innovation. The first CD, Fatboy Slim's big beat mix, sounds dated, despite being fairly high energy. True, there are it's fine points, such as the few tracks in the middle of the mix that create an enjoyable climax, but as a whole the mix sounds old and worn. Unless you're a truly big Fatboy Slim fan, his mix probably will have you hitting the "skip" button on your CD player over and over again to escape the repetition of annoying beats.
As for the Oakenfold mix, it's the reason I gave the album 4 stars. Stand-alone, this CD is one of the best trance mixes to come out just before the trance genre began to flood with exhausted, overplayed, producer driven stagnation. Some critics have panned the Oakenfold mix claiming the song selection was second rate. I could not disagree more. Most of the songs are wonderful selections on their own right, utilizing pure emotion. The CD begins with a surrealistic soundbyte of a New York Thanksgiving day television weathercast, which quickly builds into an energetic hill with the likes of "The Spirit" and "Free". The 3 song climax is among the best I've ever heard, and one that can't be missed. Of note is Solarstone's "Seven Cities", which literally makes the listener feel as if he/she is truly on an emotional ride. The closing two songs on the mix are a wonderful cool-down, of note is "Viola" which is one of the best late night driving songs ever.
Overall I think it's a ...investment well worth the cost.

Subtlety does not exist in Fatboy Slim's world. The no-nonsense king of big beat has a job to do: get the party started right. The relentless musical hook is at the center of Greatest Remixes. Reggae and ska rhythms ("Magic Carpet Ride," "Get Up! Go Insane!"), R&B lines ("The World's Made Up of This and That," "What Is Kahuna?"), and acid-synth ("Roll the Dice") are all just grist for the groove mill. "Dubby Jointy" is the disc's wildest track. Backwards tape whooshes, a screaming guitar lick, and a crazed, creepy vocal part coalesce into an inspired version. The album's closer, a remix of "E.V.A." by Jean Jacques Perrey surprises. Fatboy knows enough not to mess too much with the 30-year-old song. The original--funky, loungy, and spacy--could have been recorded last week. --Fred Cisterna

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Yo check it out.......2001-04-06

Big beat brashness, funky disco and dopey sounds that test the capacity of your listening pleasure, even insane in the membrane people I suppose. This CD indicates a non-stop party must be going on in Fatboyslims magical mixing mind. "Mighty Dub Katz" is about as clever as it gets for a meshing of sound that is Cypress Hill meets the rude boyz. "Psychedeliasmith" is out there but fits nicely into the concrete jungle landscape, a heady blend of synths and loops. There are a few turkeys too. "Roll the Dice" does just that, I think it came up snake eyes.Sometimes repetition becomes just that, repetitive. On the flip side it works sometimes like on the standout "Deeds Plus Thoughts," nothing to think about here just enjoy the mad master mixer at work. There are plenty of non stop grooves but what fascinates is that one person can orchestrate and manipulate all the diverse and seemingly unrelated sounds into one coherent package. Not my favorite Fatboyslim CD but solid nonetheless. It is easy to see why he one of the most recognizeable mixers of all the gazillion out there. Recommended in small quanities unless you have a high tolerance for pain in the membrane.

4 out of 5 stars Average, but 3 tracks here are great.......2001-01-18

Most of this disc is mediocre. Fatboy Slim gives us a lot of mixes that are pretty good but not anything special, and when there's this many, we see the limitations in his style. However, three songs are simply incredible and really must be heard: Wildchild's "Renegade Master", Christopher Just's "I'm A Disco Dancer", and Underworld's "King of Snake". They all follow the Fatboy formula, but it seems like he does a much better job. These three are moments worthy of his best original productions. So this may not be a necessary purchase, but there are some great parts to it.

4 out of 5 stars Definately an "easy listen".......2000-05-09

As an avid Fatboy Slim fan, I can say that this CD isn't in the same style as his past couple CDs, but it's actually a little more laid back for an easy listen. It has some upbeat songs, and some smooth, almost instrumental songs. All in all, it makes a good driving CD or casual listening CD. I'm glad I bought it.

2 out of 5 stars If you like The Beastie Boys . . ........2000-05-09

OK, I am not a big Beastie Boys fan, and this album ("Greatest" Remixes) reminds me of their style - loud, brash, unmelodic, hardcore. I couldn't listen to two tracks in a row without popping out the CD. I would've given this CD only one star, but I realize that it might be suitable for some people who liked that "Insane in the Membrane" sound I thought we got rid of a few years ago. As a note, I do have and enjoy "The Norman Cook/Fatboy Collection" and "Live from the Big Beat Boutique." Both of those CDs have some variety. This one is just loud and brash all the way through.

2 out of 5 stars One of a long line of rehashes.......2000-05-01

I can't see anyone justify these as his greatest anything. His studio work clearly outshines most of the mixes here. There are no fewer than three Fatboy Slim collections released in the last year, including this one and Hip-O Records' "Fatboy Slim/Norman Cook Collection". Both strike me as minor-label attempts to make a quick buck on a big star. If you want a primer, get Better Living Through Technology. If you want a greatest-hits album, wait until he compiles one, rather than settling for this.

Album Description

This is the first in the Ubiquity Studio Session series. Taking inspiration from classic library records recorded by top session musicians and produced by companies like Music de Wolfe and KPM, here are 25 super dynamic mood setting tracks perfect for the dance floor, bachelor pad, or movie soundtrack. Many of these obscure library records are highly collectible for their one or two tracks, but on this release, Ubiquity compiles all killer, no filler tunes for the DJ, funk connoisseur, film, TV, ad or radio music supervisor. There are plenty of breaks and beats, loops, and mood setting tunes, all produced by Shawn Lee, the man behind "The Ape Breaks" and "Planet Of The Breaks".

4 out of 5 stars great album.......2005-07-06

This CD has basically a bunch of 2.5 minute tracks, each one with a completely different sound. Seven or eight can go by without you noticing. Great background/hangout music, but it is not "chillout" per se, it's more upbeat than that.

5 out of 5 stars This is The Best.......2004-02-19

Wow, I felt really upset when I read the scathing review that was written about this album. This album inspired me to seek out the off-beat underground trance, as what is being mass-produced sounds too much the same. It doesn't necessarily force you to get up and dance like Sasha or Deep Dish even, but it is a listening music, akin to ambience and breakbeat ."Always" and "One" are great tracks in that they have rough electronic sounds that blend in beautifully, without reverting to the standard warm synths, the songs are seamlessly tied together, the vocals are distorted yet warped and well done. It has a driving feel to it, and all the tracks are well made. There are a few slow points which I would readily throw on the floor, but it gives you a chance to breath and enjoy. The first four songs have an ambient feel to them, climaxing on the fifth track "Interference". Trust me, this is a great album, and if you do art, like me, or anything else that requires self-expoloration, this album is for you! Too bad there wasn't a second CD with it!

4 out of 5 stars Missing some of Mara's best, but great nonetheless..........2001-05-19

I was surprised to find that Lateral Horizon wasn't included on here.

Nevertheless, there are a number of standout tracks on here. Andy Jarrod's "Corixa Part 1" has some nice elements. "Always" is another vocal track from Mara in their usual style--cheesy lyrics over dark beats that separate them from most of the other vocal trance production units. If he had closed with Revolt's "Dive Into The Deep", I would've been satisfied. The two mixes of "Assassin" and the album mix of "One" were a little disappointing.

Overall, it's a good album to get an idea of what Choo Choo has contributed to the genrue.

5 out of 5 stars Equally graceful and menacing, this is top stuff.......2001-04-19

This certainly arrives at a time when a swift antidote for the glut of commercial trance is sorely needed. Released last year overseas and now domestically available, British DJ via Australia Anthony Pappa burns through a set of dark, energetic matter perfect for prowling the night.

If it plays remarkably consistent for a label compilation, that's with cause. Nearly all the artists listed are aliases of label founders Barry Gilbey and Sara Whittaker, most notably Mara. Equally graceful and menacing, not a duff cut clogs the bunch, from Pappa's own tripped-out `Interference' to Cass's driving `Emotion Surfer.' A dirty, warped rub up of Choo Choo's (probably) biggest success, `One,' sends the mix home.

An essential pickup for fans of moodier trance, or those wanting the throbbing pulse of progressive house turned up a notch, this shouldn't be missed. Candy ravers be warned, this is likely to freak the glow from your sticks.

      4 out of 5 stars TYPICAL PAPPA.......2001-03-14

      5 out of 5 stars Great El-P Beats.......2007-03-17

This album is original. Don't listen to it one time and write a review, let the music sink in. You have to get used it. Some of these beats may be a bit spacy, but thats why I like them. Its probably also the reason they aren't rhymed over. El-P is a great beat-maker, and its what he does best (obviously). Its not comparable to Funcrusher, but as good as Funcrusher is, I think that's a good thing. No disrespect to El-P, but his lyrics, voice, and flow are substandard. He's a genius with beatmaking though, and this album shows it.

2 out of 5 stars Save your money.......2004-05-11

I bought this album used without realizing it was an instrumental cd. So when I got it home I was expecting soo much more. The beats are NOT good enough to lay down the cash on this cd. Theyre good, dont get me wrong, but I wouldn't pay money to hear them.

      5 out of 5 stars quality.......2004-01-16

These instrumentals are baggin'! You can pop it in and play it from track 1 to 16......Whether u want to sit back chill and smoke a phat one or bust a cipher with your boyz--these beats do it all. Helll, i listen to this album years later just to get into deep thinking sessions. It's no Funcrusher, but the next best thing.pick it up now and experience some of the best of hip-hop.

4 out of 5 stars Soundtrack for dark dreams.......2003-12-31

These murky, rumbling beats definitely stand on their own. If you're looking for a sequel to Funcrusher Plus, you're going to be disappointed, but if you approach "Little Johnny From The Hospital" as a gritty ambient Brian Eno-meets-Isaac Hayes Blaxploitation "Three Tough Guys"-"Truck Turner"-era soundtracks, then you've got a great trippy experience ahead of you.

5 out of 5 stars Dope Instrumental LP.......2003-06-27

I don't understand the other guy's review. This is a wicked album, and I still listen to it a year after I got it. This is THE album to put on when you're not in the mood for rhyming. Check out the bassline on 'comp', and check out 'bee aware' (also on Mr. Lif's Enter the Colossus) 'linoleum' and everything else. It's awesome.
