3 out of 5 stars I like Peaches, (especially with cream).......2007-05-12

I like Peaches and her music. I'm not even a big fan of the electro-stuff even, I just like her cheeky factor. I dunno why people make such a huge fuss over her lyric content and all that. I'd like to hope she's a wildly orgasmic person who really loves being her and in her own body, that shouldn't be a big deal. Isn't that what we'd like for everybody.

It's just nice to hear someone being up-front about that rather than all thinking we're the only people where such things may be a big part of our person when, every day, on the bus, in the workplace, on the beach we're probably surrounded by people who think and feel the same.

So be a bit 'out there' all those like Peaches and help us all be honest with ourselves about ourselves amongst ourselves. It's also nice to hear a woman able to aknowledge wanting to get laid, wanting to come, just digging wanting, no shame, no disgrace, no loss of dignity, no being judged against stuffed values-NO DISHONESTY!!!!

Cheers

4 out of 5 stars why it's so bad it's good.......2007-02-09

normally i do not like this kind of music...techno, dance, hiphop, rap, that kind of thing. sometimes i hear something that i want to hear again, but most of the time i can pass. (for stuff i do listen to: anything from neutral milk hotel to spirit to aphex twin...anywhere in between, and many places out because i try different genres often) so why can't i stop playing some of these songs?

the music isn't that great, the vocals aren't that great, and the lyrics are probably different things to different people, like adolescent, offensive, idiotic, or...as in my case...hilarious. i don't really care if this persona she's built is real. (she looks pretty damn nasty, and she's not quite as attractive as she seems like she should be. see, she sings about some pretty nasty things, so to see a pimpled and pasty girl who looks like and sounds like she's been in more than a few beds...and done really hilariously sick and disgusting, terribly sinful things in them...is a little disconcerting. in her other album, impeach my bush, long, curly black hairs are squeezed out of the crotch of her--whatever that is, a bikini?--and are perfectly lit from behind. anyway, you can kind of get a feel for what kind of girl this is.) no, if it's all fiction it's not at all important. just knowing that someone has thought about or invented this personality, such an antithesis to classic american culture, helps me to sleep better at night.

4 out of 5 stars Much better live...disc is good, though........2007-01-20

I had a chance to see Peaches on tour w/ NIN last summer and it was great.I thought I would pick up this disc since "F**k the Pain Away" was the only I could really remember from the show.
The songs are very catchy w/ a feel of the 80's synth pop.
Listening carefully...the recording isn't very good.Could've be done homemade. The bonus disc w/ a few remixes sounds much better.I only give it 4 stars because of the recording quality, but that shouldn't stop me from buying her next 2 dsics.

5 out of 5 stars What else is in the teaches of peaches? Huuh What.......2006-10-22

After hearing F the pain away, I officially declare it my new theme song for life. this album is hard, very adult and basically says I don't give a ****. Thats why I love it.

5 out of 5 stars Minimalistic techno and songs with some hard edges.......2006-08-12

I like the wit, wisdom, frank sexuality and humour of this album. Many people won't "get" Peaches. I can understand that. I can understand the fact that many will find this album very difficult and annoying.

Yet this is a very good album, made with very basic and cheap materials. A second hand drum machine and synthesizer seem to have been used by Peaches. However, this album isn't about that - it is a manifesto of low tech and songs which need to be expressed and heard. As such, Peaches succeeds very well.

Please don't listen to those who base their criticisms of this album on such things as technology and adult content. This is a hand-made album - it has an agreeable "chamber music" quality to it - by a woman with a number of things to express. In that regard, Peaches succeeds admirably.

I enjoy the music of Peaches. I am sure many will, too.

From Amazon.co.uk

Fret not, fans of filth, who worry Impeach My Bush will see saucy Canadian electro-punk Merrill Nisker shelving the politics of the bedroom and embracing political activism--a quick spin of self-explanatory tracks like "Two Guys (For Every Girl)" should quickly confirm the third Peaches full-length is just as foul-mouthed, depraved, and all-round sluttish as its predecessors. Further good news, however, comes with the realisation this is by some length the best Peaches album to date. The beats, in particular, are noticeably improved without losing that all-important gritty quality, particularly "Tent In Your Pants" and "Downtown" - a pair of tracks written with one Greg Kurstin, perhaps better known for his work with No Doubt pop queen Gwen Stefani. But there"s further collaborations, too. "Give 'er"--roughly speaking, the sound of PJ Harvey brawling with New York synth punks Suicide in a New York alleyway--features choppy riffing courtesy of Queens Of The Stone Age's Josh Homme, while album stand-out "You Love It" boasts backing vocals and guitar from punk queen Joan Jett. Midway through "Slippery Dick" ("Toss freaker/Floss tweaker/Sauce leaker/Moss shrieker") you can't help but wonder how much mileage there is in talking dirty. Taken as a whole, though, Impeach My Bush is proof Peaches is still far from spent. --Louis Pattison

Album Description

Peaches is a phenomenon, a self-made, self-produced, DIY leader of the electro-punk movement and mistress of the original dirty lyrical classics. Unique with her minimal pumping beats and loved by true innovators and fans as diverse as Deborah Harry, Iggy Pop, Bjork, Lil' Kim, Kelis, Too Many DJs, M.I.A., and LCD Soundsystem, you'll be heartened to know she hasn't cleaned up her act on her new release. Guests on this record include Joan Jett and Josh Homme and Feist. "She's dirtier than most gansta rappers. She's a lip sync favorite among drag queens...She writes dance music that rockers will listen to and rock that disco queens will dance to" - Paper.

5 out of 5 stars Best thing I've heard in a long time..........2007-05-12

I'm a relatively new convert to the Church of Peaches, as it were, but I can definitely tell you that after hearing this album, you will be too.

It's very hip-hop oriented, but Peaches puts a serious spin on a usual genre and makes it into a personally sexual, powerful, and oftentimes humourous climax.

Peaches is definitely a force to be reckoned with (and she's a cool musician, too).

1 out of 5 stars Recycled and Overrated..........2007-05-12

Those are the two words to describe this album, in a nutshell.

Impeach My Bush is uninteresting and unoriginal rehash of her previous two albums, which I liked at first and I understand that this is her shtick, but it gets old quickly. There's absolutely nothing wrong with a sexual appetite, but does she know or care about anything else? Shaking d**ks, sucking t*ts and vice versa, girl on girl on guy action - Okay, I get it already! Even trying to make a political statement, she can't leave out the sexual innuendo and doesn't elaborate on the album. Plus every one of her songs sound pretty much the same. If you like one, that's all you need. Don't even bother with the rest, including this album, unless, of course, you're a nymphomaniac.

3 out of 5 stars Good not too clean fun!!.......2007-05-12

I like this album, even if it's not one of my usual genres. That may suggest I'm a little childish or adolescent or whatever but I don't care! The only reason I've only given it 3 stars is because 4 is for things really REALLY good and 5 is for extraordinary, but this is a big 3.

For me Peaches gives a feel like she's the evolution of the ground broken by people such as Madonna, women owning their sexuality and having and taking some control of it, empowerment. Is there're anything wrong with a woman being explicit about what they want? I reckon not.

It may be cheeky and some may find it confrontational or whatever but they're not normally people who are worth investing time or energy in. Those who don't enjoy a woman being a Woman are generally people who are more comfortable with a situation where a woman has her wings clipped, can't release her fire-breathing, lust driven, wild self. The people who would be challenged by this album are probably more comfortable in situations where a woman is controlled, forced to be compliant, where her fantasy self is crippled and she never gets to have her full self. I'd rather be in a world full of `Peaches people' than a world where repression, limitation, rape, domestic violence would be seen as `just an unfortunate reality in life'.

Peaches doesn't give the feel of lots of others who demanded their female selves, those who were beaten and trashed for their choices, often finishing up O.D.ing on the gear, living through the horrors of resisting `the norm' and all else that were the costs of wanting to have their entire selves. Hers is more a celebration of a sense of completeness as a sexual orgasmic free woman than the angst of the cost to want to be that. So, I'll sacrifice my male fantasies of a subservient, monogamous, compliant, female if it means there's more like Peaches, who can embrace their every part without having to sound like Janis (bless her soul!!) or any of the others who went before who could only try to own their full selves by risking sacrificing everything to have it. Maybe Peaches is a sign that we have in fact at least made a little bit of progress somewhere in the last decades. I hope so.

Cheers

Lloyd

5 out of 5 stars Nisker Du: Women's Lib May Be Your Santa Claus.......2007-01-11

Blue records have come a long way baby. You used to hide them under your mattress with the magazines, remember? Now they get prime display space in the record store equivalents of fast food chains. Case in point, Peaches third long player, "Impeach My Bush". Don't let those cute green eyes peeking through a makeshift burka on the cover fool ya. Miss Nisker is as ribald as they come. The title might suggest that Peaches has served up a political polemic this time 'round, but that's equally deceptive. See, this album *is* about politics, but besides the first track, "F or Kill", they trend completely to the gender side rather than the one you learn about in civics.

Check out the ease with which she gleefully pees in the proverbial player's pimp cup on "Stick it to the Pimp". Those bass synths are positively elastic, wrapping around the drums the way a snake does it's next meal. Or take "Two Guys (For Every Girl)", where she flips the beat to death Beach Boys tune into a tasteless techno boogie encouraging guys to get it on with *each other* before they get a crack at her. Talk about role reversal...wonder how many men would be brave to blast this at the drive-through window. I'm not putting my hand up ;) OK, so "Impeach My Bush" is crass, none too deep in practical politics, and male listeners get a feminist tounge lashing to boot. And it has one more thing going for it. It rocks!

That's right, Peaches plays guitar all over this thing, transcending the simple club beats she's best known for and engaging in some prime riot grrrl action. Joan Jett drops by for the assist on "You Love It", bridging the gap between two generations of rebel girls. The Bikini Kill-ish "The Boys Wanna Be Her" boasts of a chick so cool even the fellas are jealous, and "Get It" brings Feist and the lone male guest Josh Homme in on the fun. "Downtown" wins the award for token attempt at radio spins, and I couldn't even explain what "Rock the Shocker" is about and stay within content guidelines. Listen and find out for yourself ;)

Technically, the production is clean in contrast to Peaches mouth. The rockers are pretty tight and sparse, just guitar and drums like the White Stripes. The lyrics are printed in the foldout, but listening to them is more fun than reading em. Call it three stars for "Impeach My Bush", worthy of some regular rotation before filing for those such as myself with large collections of LPs and discs. Just don't let your mom hear you playing "Two Guys (For Every Girl)". She may become a tad worried about your interests.

PS: That should be three stars up there, not five. Sorry.

5 out of 5 stars I Love This Woman, She Is Amazing!!!!!!!.......2006-11-26

I'm gonna keep this short and sweet. Peaches is in my opinion, larger than life. I own all her albums, after my best friend got me into her. Impeach My Bush is just as great.
If you ever get a chance to see her live in concert, Please do so.
Peaches and the Herm's will blow you away. No great big light show, no screens, no special effects. Just her, and her band, rocking your box.
I say it with all honesty, She is for Real!!!!
I know she has alot of haters out there, and thats fine. True Playa's never worry about sucka's like that.
Buy Impeach My Bush if you haven't already. Or buy it for a friend that you care deeply for. Trust me Its definitely well worth it.

Sincerely,
Carlito from the Bronx

My husband and I bought this cd for a road trip. We were going to be traveling for several days and bought this cd along with a couple other Jerry Clower cd's to help pass the time. That they did. You don't notice the hours so much when you are laughing the entire time.

5 out of 5 stars Peaches & Possums - Jerry Clower.......2006-07-03

I would suggest this for anyone who needs laughter therapy. It makes you feel better.

5 out of 5 stars A funny swan song from a beloved entertainer!.......2005-09-30

Note to the Blue Collar Comedy guys: you can be funny without being dirty. Jerry Clower is a perfect example of that. Many people marvelled that he could entertain folks without resorting to four letter words. He once said that any of his albums could be played in a Sunday School class. That's another thing I appreciated about him. From his very first album, he shared his Christian faith. I saw him perform many years ago at the Old South Jamboree in Walker, LA. One good friend does a great impersonation, and even met him. Mr. Clower once sent me an autographed picture. This was his last original album. Some stories are old ones. But he always made them fresh. The Ledbetters are back! Serious issues, such as idiotic lawsuits and MRIs, get tackled. There are beloved friends such as Grandpa Jones and Porter Wagonner. This album should be part of your comedy collection. All ages will enjoy it. As the last track says, laughter is truly the best medicine.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely the best. I was there for the live performance........1998-11-22

Jerry Clower is one of the funniest people ever. This was literally his last live recording and his best. Having been there to hear it live makes it all the more special.

3 out of 5 stars Peaches doesn't give a F#$%, and quite frankly, neither do I.......2007-07-25

This is a pretty cool album if you have a good sense of humor. Peaches uses a lot of profanity and has attitude to spare. What she doesn't have is any real lyrical talent. If for instance a song is called "Shake Your Dix"(track 7), then prepare to hear the title yelled or chanted for 4 minutes or so.If you read the song titles on the back, then you know what the lyrics will be.But brash sexual attitude and dance beats is more what she is about and it is kinda fun in a really dumb way. "Kick It" with Iggy Pop and the opener("I Don't Give A..") are among the better tracks but it is kind of novelty oriented and novelties tend to wear out rather quickly.

5 out of 5 stars Take a Bite.......2006-07-19

Man
These folks below are so UPTIGHT! This album is awesome, hilarious, funky, sexy and dirty and what's wrong with that? Go listen to Kelly Clarkson if you don't want to have some fun...shake yer dicks man!!! At least she's got balls to be herself and not let the man (or woman) tell her what to do...Peaches ROCKS! Peace

5 out of 5 stars Non-stop fun!.......2006-02-10

If you are up for a little fun and swearing, Peaches is the way to go. I love mixing a little Peaches into mix cds and people inevitably want to know who it is that is playing.

This is really great music if you have excess energy to burn. Whenever I am feeling angry, I play "I don't give a ****" and bounce around.

Some other reviewers have called Peaches juvenille and crude...well it is, but that is the joy of it. Kind of like South Park and Family Guy. This isn't music for being serious, this is music for the dirty little b**** that lives inside of all of us. Rock on Peaches!

4 out of 5 stars ABSOLUTE BOOGY.......2005-05-03

This album is really cool and is strikingly fun. You don't just want to dance, you want to boogy! Burn the house down in fact. This treasure if full to the hip with groove and her duet with Iggy Pop is pretty raw, kind of like her image. The tracks, which I consider to be the strongest are: Operate and Kick It. Peaches is truly eclectic and I enjoy Electro clash a lot. Peaches and Dada Pogrom, another favourite artist of mine should join forces and produce even more killer tracks. Bet they'd be delightfully haunting. In any case, this is a nice edition to her other album which I have called The Teaches of Peaches.

1 out of 5 stars Punk is dead.......2004-07-22

Yawn. Between Peaches re-hashing Wendy O. Williams (around 25 years ago) and Marilyn Manson doing his best Alice Cooper-meets-Gene Simmons impersonation (also about 25 years ago), I'd say it's officially over. Apathy wins.

5 out of 5 stars The best album of its kind that I know of........1999-03-20

I discovered this album as a teenager and immediately fell in love with it. As things happen, somewhere along the way I lost the recording. Over the years, as the mood dictated, I happily recalled the melodies contained on this recording. I've even searched for it on those occasions when I found myself in a well stocked music store -- to no avail. Happily, Amazon.com found it for me.

The harmonizing between Peaches and Herb is exquisite. As I listened to the clips, the old feelings returned from across the years. No other love songs come close to United, For Your Love or The Ten Commandments of Love. Do yourself a favor, buy this album and listen to it with someone you love.

5 out of 5 stars Superb Collection From This Unique Band!.......2004-06-15

The Stranglers are one of those bands that are hard to describe, they have a sound that is distinctly their own. Part of the punk movement of the seventies, they were more advanced musically and lyrically than most of Britain's punk bands. This superb collection contains such gems as "No More Heroes", "Straighten Out", "All Day And All Of The Night" (remember the original by The Kinks? Well The Stranglers do a great job covering this classic), "96 Tears" (another classic originally a hit for the sixty's group "? And The Mysterians", "Golden Brown", "Dutchess", "Always The Sun", "Skin Deep", and "La Folie" plus more. The only song missing is "All Roads Lead To Rome". The remastering is excellent with crisp highs, increased midrange and extended output. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Good 80s stuff.......2004-03-01

This is a very good cd. i had never heard of the sranglers before a friend shared a track with me. and what can i say? i'm hooked. being a new fan, this album was obviously the one for me to get because it is a collection of their best songs. I really love the tracks "Golden Brown" and "Peaches" and "Always the Sun" and... well every other song. Maybe you've heard the song "All Day and All of the night" I'm not sure if they are the original recorders of this song, but its cover if not. If you are a fan of 80s music (stuff that you'd see on the wedding singer soundtrack) I definitely suggest this album! Good variety too: melodic, upbeat, fantastical, and fun... BUY IT TODAY!

3 out of 5 stars Half the tracks are march or played like one.......2007-06-05

This disc reminded me of Leonard Bernstein's conducting: somehow many of his conducting session became marches. Many tracks on this disc is like that. I am a novice when it comes to classical music, so part of allure of this disc was that it contained many titles I didn't recognize, so it wasn't a total loss. I guess I should have read the track listing more carefully... what is Washington Post by Sousa doing on dance compilation?

4 out of 5 stars decent for dancing.......2006-12-31

There are quite a few tracks on here that do well for recital music. THere's different ones from the unoriginal swan lake's and nutcracker..my students loved to hear what came next....it gets better towards the end of the cd!

5 out of 5 stars Recommended.......2005-10-03

For those who would enjoy a fast, fun, and cheerful kind of classical music, I guess this cd is a very good choice. Also, if you want to make your kids a classic music lover, you could start with this fun, lighthearted music.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful selection, but not really dancing music.......2000-06-27

I agree that this is indeed absolutely beautiful light classical music. It is indeed a perfect beginning to a lifelong passion to have classical music playing in the background or to turn up the volume and immerse yourself in it. But it consists of mostly ballet music, several marches, polkas, an entrance of the gladiators, a gavotte and just to show that he can-can, a delightful little march by Beethoven of all people (Turkish March). Or can you dance to the continuous hypnotic rhythm of Ravel's Bolero? Quite tiring, I would think. Nevertheless, great music at an astounding price. Consider buying all or most of the "25 Favorites" series. You will not regret it

5 out of 5 stars This Will Keep You Dancing.......2000-03-30

If you like to dance and you like classical, this cd is a must have. Who says you can't dance to classical? This CD proves those who think so wrong. Highlights include Tchaikovsky's Sleeping Beauty, Mendhelsson's Midsummer Night's Dream, Gounod's Dance of the Slave Girls and Faust, Dvorak's Slavonic Dance, Offenbach's can-can (yeah!) Katchaturian's Sabre Dance and Ravel's Bolero. All these are excellent. Sousa Marches are here too. You must get this CD if you are a serious lover of the classical. In fact, this was my first Classical CD. Make it a part of your life and dance to the great beats of the classics ! Yeah I'm serious.

3 out of 5 stars Promising but Immature.......2007-05-05

I would give this album a better rating if it weren't for the immature lyrics and pathetic, misguided attempts at irony. The lo-fi Beat Happeningesque sound is a breath of fresh air in the relatively stagnant underground scene (in terms of lo-fi Indie rock). If you can stand to look past the adolescence, it is a relatively decent album and worth giving a spin.

1 out of 5 stars Music For Idiots, Savants, and those With No Clue.......2007-04-04

Only the very briefest moments of humor save this CD from being one of the wrost I have ever heard. From start to finish there's no compelling reason to listen to this CD unless you're wasted or have an IQ below 80 - it really is that bad. Some people like watching B movies because they're so bad they're good. This CD belongs in the same category.

The voices (one male, one female - I don't dare compliment them by calling them singers) are horribly tone deaf, out of sync, and just plain bad. The band is just as lame, sounding like some 6th graders who just got instruments at their first garage practice.

I can't imagine this band going anywhere. When they finally give up (which can't happen soon enough) they can compete for minimum wage jobs like the rest of the useless people who will ensure the next generation does worse than thier parents.

5 out of 5 stars So good........2006-03-22

Years from now people are gonna look back and say this was the mad note. So good. There is nothing else like this. I'm gonna go cry now.

1 out of 5 stars Oh brother !!!! Beat Happening all over again ..........2006-02-17

All of you thirty-somethings out there know what I'm talking about...Adam Green + Moldy Peaches = teenage Beat Happening

4 out of 5 stars I don't know about hype..........2006-02-07

I read several reviews of this that talked about people buying into the 'hype'; one who even said this is the kind of album where 1 'cool kid' heard it and liked it, and told his friends, so they all decided to like it too'. I have to disagree.

I had never heard of this band before. At 42, I'm considerably older than their 'target' audience perhaps. But from the first song, I was hooked. There's something so wistful and sweet about several of the songs. Basically, if you like music that has some feeling in it, aren't hung up on technical proficiency (and I do NOT mean that as an insult) and can dig on some lo'fi, interesting music, you'll like this.

3 out of 5 stars Neither a Letdown, Nor a Knockout.......2006-07-20

The musicianship is outstanding, plain to hear on every track. The recording is also top-notch, clear, distinct, with great separation, superb mixing.

But overall, this one just doesn't warm me up. I don't come home at the end of the day and want to slide this into the player, just to run through it a few times. And why is this? After much thinking, it's down to two things.

First, most of the arrangements are just too true to the original, too close to Frank's recordings. Yeah, the arrangements are actually different (but honestly, not by that much), and we've got all instruments as opposed to synclavier, etc. But just sitting and listening, to my long-FZ-acquainted ears it's too much like listening to the originals. This comes across as arranger homage to Frank (and you've gotta respect that), but at the same time I'd think that a group as boss and proficient as the EM would be able to branch out and stretch those musical wings a bit. I mean, if Frank Zappa's music doesn't lend itself well to alternative interpretations (just listen to the new Ed Palermo Big Band FZ music release and that wacky salsa "Take Your Clothes Off When You Dance"), then what does?

Second, the vocals on "Greggary Peccary" just drive me nuts. It's like listening to a reading of some kind of darkly twisted children's book, with the narrator employing all kinds of silly, stupid, and eventually just plain annoying vocal ploys to keep me interested. Given my comments above about the sound being too close to the original, this criticism may come across here as flip-flopping, but this rendition of Greggary, despite its highly original and enjoyable add-on way there at the end, just grates on me.

If you're new to Zappa, save this purchase until you're far more schooled in the entire FZ catalog, until you can look at the songs listed on the label and hear them in your head. Wait until you've got all of the major FZ releases before you get this one.

If you're a dedicated Zappa lunatic, then you'll buy this, just as I did. And you won't regret it; I certainly don't. I guess I was just hoping for more, the kind of "more" that the Colin Towns "Frank Zappa`s Hot Licks & Funny Smells: Live at Moers Festival 2004" release gave in magnificent profusion. Now this is a recording I look forward to listening to, often. In fact, I'll put in on in the car for the ride home tonight.

4 out of 5 stars Close..........2005-05-03

As much as I love "The Yellow Shark," so had I anticipated more of FZ's music from the Ensemble Modern. "Everything Is Healing Nicely" is excellent, but only whetted my appetite more. When I was informed of this offering, I leaped at the chance to gain possession. Sadly, I am not quite leaping for joy afer hearing it.

As always, the musicianship is superb. I believe the Ensemble Modern to be among the finest groups of musicians on the planet today. I also believe there is something missing on this particular release. I thought perhaps it was merely a difference between conductors, Jonathan Stockhammer on the current recording and Peter Rundel on "The Yellow Shark," but it's more than that. Perhaps it is because "Shark" is a live recording, I thought, but comparing "Healing Nicely" with this release puts that theory to bed. Then, after several intent listenings, I realized what was missing was the "eyebrows."

Perhaps only Frank himself is qualified to address that most essential aspect of Zappa's music. Perhaps we are fated to eyebrowless renditions of FZ's music for eternity. Perhaps I am wrong. I am sure that after the death of many great composers nit-pickers like myself ranted about how it will never be the same, the right attitude is missing, blah, blah, blah.

I am suddenly reminded of one of the first lessons about art I learned: Never listen to what as***les like me have to say about it. Buy it, listen to it, make up your own mind.

5 out of 5 stars Just as good, if not better than Yellow Shark.......2004-06-19

Thank Jebus for the Ensemble Modern. What an incredible group of musicians. I could not agree more with Gail Zappa when she exclaims in the liner notes, "The precision with which this is played is shocking and delicious." I am so grateful to this ensemble for realizing the music of one of my favorite composers so capably and lovingly. This recording took skill, determination, and dedication.

I, personally, think the arrangements are fantastic. It was a painstaking process to find as much of the original material as possible and then to transcribe the rest. The production is lush, balanced and precise. And, once again, the performances are inspired.

My one complaint is that "Peaches" feels a little rushed. Everything else is perfect. "Moggio," "A Pig with Wings," "Naval Aviation In Art?" and "The Adventures of Gregary Preccary" stand out as perhaps a litle more perfect than the rest.

I cannot recommend this disc highly enough to any fan of Zappa's music.

3 out of 5 stars Underwhelming.......2004-05-09

Excellent musicians, but quite bland arrangements (particularly in "Put a Motor in Yourself", pretty climax-less "Low Budget Orchestera..." and clumsy "Peaches..."). And I find the treatment of Greggary Peccary, FZ's magnum opus, to be particularly unsuccessful: narration sounds more like aping with a lot of silly mannerisms, making the whole story (which is a nice one, btw) sound very artificial. FZ was telling a story -David Moss and Omar Ebrahim are just reciting a text. I wonder if some more imaginative approach would have helped - like having narration parts played by some instruments (trumpets? clarinets?). Greggary Peccary sounds like quite an unlikable character in Omar Ebrahim's performance (and he was pretty charmins, IMO, in FZ's version). Orchestratin is again somehow lacking the edge of the original.

More successful tracks are excellent dynamic "Moggio" and interestng version of "Naval Aviation...".

4 out of 5 stars A great homage.......2004-04-01

I have grown to love "The Yellow Shark" and "Civilization Phaze III" more and more by and by, as the discs have spin in my player. I keenly awaited the release of this disc with high expectations, and realized--the first time I gave this disc a listen--that I could have had set the bar even higher! The sound engineering (purity there of, and stereophony) is very satisfying. To hear these songs, which I have liked and loved for a long time, performed by an ensemble this powerful and professional (and furthermore - big) is very pleasing.
Ali N. Askin (composer, EM's arranger, and FZ's assistant for the "Yellow Shark" project) has transcribed the original mid-70's recording of "Greggery Peckery", and orchestrated it for EM. It is quite mind-blowing how accurate this performance is to the original, and the added spices are very tasty - this goes for every single performance on the disc, btw. I can see how the hectic narration on "Greggery" could bother those who have grown accustomed to the original recording, but it doesn't much bother me, the professionalism of the musicians saves a lot. Three pieces from "Civilization Phaze III" are performed - this time around with only "real" instruments, of course, and they are all granted to warm the hearts of "C.P.III" lovers. Two nostalgic classics --"Peaches En Regalia" and "Revised Music for Low Budget Orchestra"-- are granted to give listeners satisfaction, especially to those who might think that Zappa's hey day was during the "Hot Rats" period. The performances of these tunes are rich, and give the compositions a certain royalty. An insane fact about this album, is that it is recorded in EIGHT DAYS, proving that this is a VERY talented and EXTREMELY professional ensemble, meaning also that it is worth listening to just for the quality of performance, even if you don't generally enjoy FZ's music.
...Oh, and there's an eleventh track on the disc - it's "hidden", but I'm not going to give anything away; find out what it is for yourselves by buying this album, thus supporting a group of GREAT musicians.
