Understandable........2006-12-27
The lyrics are very cliche`, and I was disappointed to see that Swizz Beatz (Mashonda's husband; she's signed to his label) only produced three songs.
'Sometimes, when I'm alone...I get lonely' Mashonda says at the start of 'Lonely'.
The lyrics make you say 'uhh...okay. I could've made that up!'
The beats are not up to par with some of the producers other work.
Bryan-Michael Cox's 'Why I Love You' is so forgettable.
Kanye West's 'Hold Me' is nothing special.
Swizz Beat's 'Girlfriend' has a great beat; it's just Mashonda's trite lyrics ('Girlfriend, girlfriend. You make me sick' and something about being friend until the end) that brings the otherwise stand out song down.
Blackout is one of Swizzy's laziest productions (and some of Sean Garrett's most cliche' lyrics). Tsk
'Back of Da Club' is the BEST song on the album. It's enjoyable; catchy; the lyrics aren't bad; the beat is great; the song is great.
I do believe Mashonda has tremendous potential, judging by her guest appearances. Maybe on her next album, if she hired better producers (the producers I mentioned in this review were the only notable ones) and writers to co-write with her, she could put out a great album.
Oh, and although the lyrics and beats aren't great, her voice IS pretty good throughout, although it would be interesting to see her expand her range.

BLACKOUT BLACKOUT.......2006-07-15
MASHONDA THE ALBUM IS HOT.......2006-02-20
This deserves its spot on the shelf.......2006-02-07
Then...last June I heard "Blackout" and it was even hotter. The beat is so crazy and her voice goes so well over the track, I knew it was going to be a hit. I looked on her website and the release date for the album was August 23, 2005. In a month's time, the track was getting no airplay and the album got pushed back to September 13:(. When that day came, I saw it got pushed back to September 27. Then October 13, and then in December. And what now? No release date:(
My point of all that was to explain to everyone how long I have been waiting for this album. Just the other day, somebody gave me the sight to download the album because it got leaked on the internet. I felt bad getting it illegally but I figured that it is going to be awhile. I bet Mashonda is back in the studio recording new material because "January Joy" leaked everywhere. By the time the album comes out, believe me....I am buying 10 copies to support Mashonda because she is a unique artist.
The album....IS GREAT. Her voice is very soft and melodic; it goes good with all the tracks she has on the album. Especially on songs such as "Lonely" and "Touch Me." Upbeat songs such as "Why I Love You"(favorite song) and "Girlfriend" also are a great way to showcase Mashonda's voice. She may not be a Mariah or Alicia but she sure does beat a lot of the other females in the music business right now.
Bottom line...lets try to support Mashonda and get her the attention she deserves. If you really want it, you should buy the import because you won't be disappointed. If this was released, I could see a possible Grammy nomination (Best Contemporary R&B Album?). Hopefully her time will come very soon.
