5 out of 5 stars battle of the bands.......2006-04-15

Im from ATHENS GA. originaly from philly i remember breakwater from the early 70's when they played in the park ,belmont plateau with groups like rated-x, brutus ,soul devalients, and cross town traffic. BOY!! THOSE WHERE THE DAYS,it was about the horns then and breakwater always won the battle of the bands. they are funk legends off the scale and i rate these albums 5*****.I can't afford to get them but if i could i would put them on the top of the list.

5 out of 5 stars Two -album wonder.......2006-01-04

I have FOND memories of these guys. They broke out with their debut album with the "lips on a waterhose" album cover, the same time I was coming into my dating ages. Although they only put out two albums, these were comparably the best albums of their era. (Tie between Breakwater and Heatwave) I notice mainly people from Philly, as I am originally, have knowledge of "Breakwater". WDAS radio had a great ear back then for great music. These LP's are timeless. I still pump these on the regular, and never get tired of hearing it. If you have never heard of these guys, take time to listen. You'll be glad you did. It was groups like Breakwater that laid the foundation for the Funk/Neo-Soul sound we enjoy today. All you youngbucks!! Take Note!!

5 out of 5 stars Say you Love Me Girl !.......2005-09-01

Old Time Breakwater fan.. grew up in philly going to block parties catching these guys was a treat beyond words...

5 out of 5 stars Breakwater - East Coast Style.......2002-01-03

The year was 1980, the day was not too long after I bought my brand new 1979 Buick Riviera, and I was living in Philly at the time when I first heard the sounds of Breakwater. The rhythm and energy of the group was off the hook and literally blew me away. As soon as I heard a cut from the Breakwater album I went and bought the tape, which I still have, and am now extremely happy to be able to find it on CD. The rhythm and soul of this group is as dynamic as that of AWB and we all know how big they are to us music lovers. So it doesn't bother me that Breakwater did not follow up their Splashdown album with another because the sounds from their only two albums are sounds that will last a lifetime.

5 out of 5 stars sayyoulove me.......2001-10-11

Splashdown was Melissa Kaplan, Kasson Crooker and Adam Buhler. While some bands have only one or two creative forces within, Splashdown was different in that all three members contributed to the music. With Melissa's lyrics and piano, Adam's incredible guitar work, and Kasson's intricate beats and synths, Splashdown wrote complicated, intelligent, and beautiful music in their short 5-year run.

It is truly difficult to describe the sound of Splashdown in words, as each song has its own character, and the music has such soul that words on a website don't do it justice. Some songs are more Middle Eastern-inspired, some are alternative rock tracks with a touch of trip hop, some are trip hop with a touch of guitar. Others yet are mellow, quiet, longing, mainly-piano pieces ("Dig" and "Over the Wall") with that signature Splashdown edge. "So Ha" is also piano-driven, but is neither quiet nor mellow--it's very sassy, assertive, and, dare I say, uppity! It was the song I used to belt out on the chair lift going up the mountain while on my snowboarding trips. "As long as I'm kept from laying hands on a weapon/Then maybe you'll be okeeyayeeyay/So ha!" Yeah!

A song-by-song rundown of Redshift (to the best of this reviewer's ability):

      1. "A Charming Spell" Starting off with some electric violin-sounding chords and a trip hop drum machine line, Adam's raging guitars soon join in. Melissa is not to be left out of this party, however, as her haunting lyrics are layered over the top of it all. As the song segways into the chorus, your only urge is to turn it up, way up. Driving electric guitars and an urgent beat, with Melissa's voice and ethereal lyrics make "A Charming Spell" a true work of art. And this is only the first song!

      2. "The Archer" My personal favorite on this EP, it begins with a joyful yet mysterious series of long synth notes, with a trip hop beat following soon after. Melissa launches in with a gentle, tentative voice, "Time kicked me off of her island/Motion's been keeping me streamlined/Which direction will you point your arrow?/Mercy is bad for the vision, ruthless will clear it away." Adam's electric guitar is also gentle-sounding, but as the chorus kicks in, the groovy drum beat continues and vocal harmony is added underneath the main chorus lyrics. Melissa's voice soars, and the listener can feel the need reaching through. Halfway through, a powerful sitar groove is introduced; if this doesn't get you moving, you haven't got a lick of music appreciation in you. "The Archer" concludes with a sample from an earlier Splashdown song, "Pandora."

      3. "Mayan Pilot" A much more organic song, Adam switches to an acoustic guitar and Kasson opts for a less synth-sounding drum beat. Melissa seems to have real fun with this one, as her voice is absolutely incredible. She has no trouble with the high notes or the low; they are all rich and full. A trumpet joins in on the fun, but only for one poignant high note, for emphasis. More of Melissa's signature vocal harmony can be heard underneath the chorus for the last repeat. This song will also have you bobbing your head to the beat. Hell, you'll probably get up and groove.

      4. "Waterbead" A far off, quiet intro greets you on this true trip hop gem. Synths and a drum machine line join up, and a mellow guitar counter-melody can be heard under the verses. The middle part of the song gets more aggressive, with a driving guitar jam over the top of Kasson's double-time drum break. Just when you start to get comfortable with the change, "Waterbead" suddenly grows quiet again, with Melissa's vocals becoming the centerpiece. This plays through for a few bars, but back come Kasson's drum beats. There is a trade-off of these two styles for the rest of the song. It works quite well, and is a mesmerizing listen.

      5. "Ironspy" Want a voice-over-guitar-feedback intro? You got it! I would file this song more under the "alternative" heading, because though Kasson's signature percussion (I think he uses a live snare drum in addition to the drum machine on this track) is present, Adam really tears it up on his guitar. Not to be outdone, Melissa channels all of her Rock Goddess power and owns the upper register of her vocal range. The listener can relate to the lyrics as well; one gets the feeling Melissa was once in a relationship gone very wrong: "Someone/Stop my hands from shaking/Iron in my spine's conducting lightning/Raging anger/Yeah, you've never been truly mine/But if you were, yes, if you were, I wouldn't want you anyway." Ouch!

It's a shame Amazon does not have samples of these tracks uploaded to its servers, but as a previous reviewer said, you can find these songs on the net if you look. Someone within the past six months wrote major additions to Splashdown's Wikipedia article, check it out.

5 out of 5 stars Splashdown - Murdered by the music industry.......2006-11-22

Splashdown did some very inventive things with their music. Great stuff. In my pointy head I liken their music to Portis Head. The way I figure it you will dig Splashdown if'n you dig Portis Head.

Their first album was "Stars & Garters". nab it if you can find it. It was on shelves for about 3 weeks and then their distributor folded and ate the album along the way.

The "Redshift" EP and the "Halfworld" EP were some interim pieces that escaped into the rest of the world while they worked on another album under, I think, Capital that was intended to score some movie or another. The movie deal tanked and Capital ate this album. I think was called Blueshift.

As I've heard it the band got dejected and went about their lives in different directions.

5 out of 5 stars This is how Music SHOULD Sound.......2006-07-24

Words cannot describe the utter beauty of the phenomenon known as Splashdown and the sheer genius behind it. More than music, this is an experience. A delight for all the senses. Well worth the price, if you can find it.

      5 out of 5 stars Simply Mindblowing!.......2006-07-17

I've had this CD for going on six years now, and I'm still constantly amazed at how good it sounds. It's a dance/pop/techno fusion that is extremely tight and polished, yet manages to wander over a large chunk of the musical map. The only complaint I have is that it's hard to find the other stuff this group has done!

In short, if you like your music to push boundaries and like dance/electronica then you won't be dissapointed with this CD. I *highly* reccomend it.

      ~Me.

      5 out of 5 stars Simply Outstanding.......2006-01-21

This CD holds a quintet of amazing tracks by a trio of amazing musicians. Perhaps even more amazingly, the songs are so varied that you may be surprised they came from the same group. Splashdown is a real treat!

This comes from a truly awesome recording of a live broadcast from radio station. However, don't buy this version. Instead, buy Splashdown II...it is more complete & better version of this session. Also, there are actually only 8 songs on this CD & they are not labeled correctly according to track number on CD cover. Police Dog Blues & Splashdown are combined into one song.

5 out of 5 stars If Brian Wilson has an alter ego........2002-07-14

From the beaches of Southern California comes honeyrider, a pure masterpiece from begining too end. If Brian Wilson has an alter ego it has to be Gary Strickland (Vocals/guitar) with dreamy vocals and super fuzz guitars it makes you wanna jump into that old 57 chevy and cruise with the AM radio blasting and the top down to soak up the summer rays. Track's like pleasure Beach and California U.S.A. are pure pop genuis.

        5 out of 5 stars A Summer to Remember.......2001-10-24

A summer explosion of fun. Made me want to pack my bags for a trip to the beach! Brings back memories of California and a shy, gorgeous guy who wrote a song about our summer. This is a winner!

4 out of 5 stars pure summer pop!.......2000-06-11

Just when I thought "Lying in bed just like Brian Wilson..." was the only Beach Boys reference in music today... Honeyrider brought the whole group back! I found Splashdown by chance and consider this CD one of the best for a surf's-up-it's-time-to-go-go summer party. It's filled with Beach Boy-style harmonics, sliding guitars, and pure summer pop. My favorite songs are "Supersonic Cindy" and "Pleasure Beach." Less notable for it's sound than it's lyrics are "You Made Me Hate The Beach Boys."

5 out of 5 stars Without a doubt the best Hot Tuna CD EVER!.......2003-02-22

This has got to be without a doubt the most incredible acoustic playing Jorma has ever done. Jack is there every step of the way to back him up as well. The chemestry between the two is enough to make anyone love Hot Tuna. Not only does this cd display incredible talent, but an incredible friendship between Jorma and Jack that could last ages. Lastly, on police dog blues, you can hear a live news broadcast of the apollo-soyaz shuttle landing. The radio executives thought that what Jorma and Jack were producing was far to great to interupt, but also thought the shuttle mission was far too important to ignore, so they just mixed the broadcast right into the music. Its Incredible!

          4 out of 5 stars None.......2000-03-17

This is well woth picking up if you are at all a Hot Tuna fan. Jorma is smokin on I Know You Rider, and I Am The Light of This World is great also. Apparently, they just stopped in a radio station to play one day and this is the result. No production, no puffery, and none needed!
