Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars His passion comes through.......2005-10-29

This is probably one of the more divisive of Diamond's albums. Fans of his earlier works feel it is over produced and schmaltzy, others believe things are only enhanced by the use of sophisticated orchestrations; after listening once again, I find myself in the latter camp. While on songs like "Once in a While" the background is too busy, filled with soaring strings "tinkling" synths; the next song "Let the Little Boy Sing" shows how well this style can work elevating a fairly slight piece into one of sheer joy. Opening and closing with compositions by Brian Wilson and Joni Mitchell, Diamond does a great job in making "God Only Knows" and "A Free Man in Paris" his own (both worth the price of admission) and his own compositions work well between these wonderful "bookends." I can appreciate the point of those critical of this work, but his voice convinces me, there's just as much passion here and he's not buried in the sound. It just supports him in an occasionally over lush cocoon, but still has the emotion needed to make the album work.

5 out of 5 stars One of his best and best produced.......2005-10-16

here I think there is a perfect balance between production and musicianship. The cover of god only knows is incredible and so is "as if". Neil Diamond is in a category of his own. Sabre Dance is a good song which combines classical and modern acoustic sounds and is very intense. I think this was the first album that vince charles played on. The other thing I like about neil diamond in the 70s is that the drum acoustics are among the best. There is a constant balance of sound. Throughout the 60s and 70s many bands had horrible production (especially elton john and the eagles)in the drum department. If you listen to Neil through the 70s and 80s the production is among the best in the industry. This album is ahead of its time musically.

4 out of 5 stars An underrated album.......2004-07-16

This is actually one of Diamond's best albums, though terribly underrated. Two of my favorite songs are on this album and on no other; "Glad You're Here with Me Tonight" and "Once In A While" are among his finest works. The only reason I didn't give it '5' is because the volume level is low for a CD recording.

4 out of 5 stars My favorite Diamond.......2003-10-15

I'm not really what you'd call a Neil Diamond fan. I like him well enough. His voice is nothing to get excited about but the songs he sings!! Fine melodies that make up for his mediocre voice. This album is my favorite work by Mr. Diamond. 3 songs rank among my favorites, the title track, God Only Knows, and Once in A While. Not originals, but very well done on this album. I gave this one a '4' rather than '5' due to recording level. The volume is quite low, compared to most CD recordings. I think a good remastering would help quite a bit.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best- Videos.......2003-07-02

I just bought the Video and the CD, and they are magnificent. Neil is at his very best. You can tell that he takes such great care of how his music is played, and sung. His songs are magical, so very beautifully sung. I adore this album, and tape. It is my favorite.

Showing Neil getting ready for a very large audience of over 65,000 people in Englnad, he looked scared but at the end he had a big grin, and I am sure he Wowed them....

4 out of 5 stars Disney.......2004-11-30

This cd is really good, i love all the songs. Ariel has always been my favourite disney classic. I only have one problem, the singers arn't the actual singers that were in the films, and thats abit of a dissapointment for me. I would recommend this cd but not to people who actually want to listen to the actual people.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Orchestrals.......2002-02-11

What's best about Disney's animated features, is that they contain amazing orchestral scores and songs. With this CD, one can hear the nuances of the full orchestral scores of 4 of Disney's most popular features, as played and by a full symphony and chorus.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars You'll be disappointed.......2006-09-02

Not the original artists. Very weak versions of beloved songs by marginal to downright bad vocalists.

5 out of 5 stars Pretty good musical mix.......2006-03-10

Lots of great and clear vocals. I was looking for a musical mix and this has a nice sampling of many major songs but also some more recent stuff. I haven't purchased an import before but I would do it again if the opportunity presented itself. It is somewhat annoying to have three cds when I think it could have fit onto two. Still, more than I have complaints, I have compliments about it.

3 out of 5 stars Mostly a decent CD.......2003-10-30

I wonder how many people saw the ad for this CD on TV and ordered it right away without looking further into the contents. Brightman? Bocelli? Pavarotti? Florez? Watson? All Three Tenors? All on one CD? Sounded like a winner in the ad. They don't mention the Main Title from Star Wars. Nor do they mention (even Amazon doesn't show it!), that Anne Sofie Von Otter's performance is actually a duet with Elvis Costello, who simply does not have the chops or vocal gifts that most of the other artists on this CD are blessed with. In fact, that song is positively dreadful, and it's all because of Costello's vocally-strained style. What the hell is he doing on this CD? The rest of this CD is generally fine, but certainly do not expect a CD full of classical music, and be prepared to skip song #2 every time you play the CD.

Fabulous! A dream come true. 31 of the DeCastro Sisters greatest recordings in one low-priced package. And what sound! The 45's if you could find them, never sounded like this. Some are even in real stereo and there are even some unreleased tracks never heard before. What a treat for their many fans. Long overdue!

      5 out of 5 stars Viva DeCastros!.......2000-06-06

The DeCastro Sisters are absolutely the best! It's just fabulous to finally have all their best original recordings in one package--31 of them in a wonderfully-priced CD with incredible sound. Those old 45s, if you ever could find them, never sounded like this and there's unreleased stuff too! Some are even in real stereo! What a bargain. Really a must-have for any collection!

5 out of 5 stars took american pop music by storm.......2000-03-11

the decastro sisters early in the 1950's literally took american music by storm with their throaty tight knit harmony giving the queens of boogie woogie "the andrew sisters" a run for their crowns. for forty years I have not been able to come across the sisters recordings but now thanks to amazon.com I have not one of their hits but all of them and in the space age technology of digitally remastered compact disc. paying also far less than the orginal $1.00 for each of the 31 tracks within. I highly recommend this cd to anyone who loves the music and singers of the 40's and fabulous fiftys.

4 out of 5 stars A powerful debut album which remains timeless........2007-01-16

After having his demos rejected by both Motown and MCA, Freddie Jackson signed Capitol Records and became an R&B superstar. For me "Love Is Just A Touch away" and "I Wanna Say i Love You" are the album's crown jewels but this album remains a true classic--all eight tracks are superb.

THIS SONG REMINDS ME OF AND IS DEDICATED TO THE ONLY MAN I'VE
EVER LOVED. WE PARTED AND NOW BACK AGAIN. I WOULD PLAY THIS SONG WHENEVER I THOUGHT OF HIM. IT'S THE GREATEST LOVE SONG, FOR ME BY FREDDIE.

5 out of 5 stars Dynamite debut! .......2004-09-28

Although Freddie Jackson's debut had only 8 songs, it was a very entertaining album overall! Those hits such as the soulful Rock Me Tonight and the other 3 top 10 hits that galvanized this album to platinum status. I still love Love Is Just a Touch Away, the funky He'll Never Love You and the gorgeous You Are My Lady. Both Love is and He'll Never sound like they could be heard in Atlanta and in Morgan County, Georgia than the New York studios that the songs were recorded. The other 4 are just as good, especially his remake of Good Morning Heartache. This album really jumpstarted his career and he even challenged Luther Vandross for R&B balladeer, chart space and awards for 3 to 4 years. It is still a classic album to me!

      5 out of 5 stars Super.......1999-10-22

It's a great album , but I want to find the name of the Freddie's cd including the song " Dream on" from the original soundtrack " The king of New York" with Christopher Walken.

5 out of 5 stars Big Bad VooDoo Daddy swings harder than Mark McGwire's bat........1998-08-04

Big Bad VooDoo Daddy creates a style of jazz that conjures up images of smokey lounges in New Orleans or Chicago. They mix catchy lyrics, the talent and ability that jazz requires, and rythms that swing so hard you might get whiplash. Scotty's mellow vocals provide a solid foundation which allows soloists, such as "The Kid" (on trumpet), to weave intricate solos which add a certain punch to the band's already bruising sound. All in all, Big Bad VooDoo Daddy brings back the dancable, firey sound that once made swing the most popular music in the world.

I don't like lengthy reviews so straight to the meat. These guys were (are?) good - why weren't they more popular??

If you like Kansas, Thin Lizzy, Starz, Triumph, and the like, then give this a listen. Stand out cuts are Tonight, Flesh and Blood, Hollywood, and Touch Me Tonight. Heck, the Christmas Song is even pretty catchy!

Check it out! Especially if you're looking for some misic that isn't made anymore. This will take you back to the good old days....
