THis was a gift for my father and he was very impressed with the quality and speedy delivery. Thanks again!

5 out of 5 stars The Original Made Even Better, Who Would Have Thunk it was Possible?.......2006-07-22

This is one of my favorite Donovan albums, with "Young Girl Blues," being right up there as one of my favorite Donovan songs, if not my favorite. It's a sad, weepy song that never fails to move me. "Writer in the Sun" is another song like that. One can only wonder if Donovan was thinking about bowing out of the music business, because of the problems he was having getting "Superman" and "Yellow" released in the UK. Seems those Pye guys just didn't want to let go of their number one moneymaker.

"Mellow Yellow" was a huge hit and how can you not like that song. "Sand and Foam" written, while Don was in Mexico, is absolutely beautiful. I just love this whole record, it was and is a masterpiece that laid the groundwork for some many rock and roll greats who followed. If you are into rock and roll, you've gotta have this as "Mellow Yellow" is one of those important rock records that will never die.

And then you add in the extra songs on this disc, "Superlungs" they way it was meant to be heard. The neat alternate version of "Writer in the Sun," "Epistle to Dippy," Donovan's letter in song to a lost friend and more. This is a super package. The originally "Mellow Yellow" made even better, who would've thunk it was possible?

5 out of 5 stars Donovan becomes eclectic with fourth LP.......2006-06-17

Donovan's fourth album, originally released in 1967, was his second with producer Mickie Most and arranger John Cameron, and though it featured the flower-power light-psych title anthem, it also reached back past the previous "Sunshine Superman" LP to Donovan's folk and jazz roots. When released, its original ten tracks comprised Donovan's most eclectic collection to date, ranging from the solo folk tunes "Sand and Foam" and "Young Girl Blues," to the ornate arrangement of "Hampstead Incident," the bohemian jazz of "Bleak City Woman" and "The Observation," and the swinging, name-checking pop of "Sunny South Kensington."

Much of this material was written during a tumultuous period in 1966 that saw Donovan separating from (and then being sued by) his initial management team, embargoed from releasing new material in the UK, and unable to promote his work in the US. Melancholy, lethargy and the pain of personal and professional setbacks permeate the lyrics. The dispirited artist stoked his artistic muse in Greece and Mexico, and spent downtime preparing material with his producer and arranger. Once back in the studio the sessions produced sophisticated, eclectic material in short order.

EMI's reissue doubles the original ten tracks with bonuses that include the single sides "Epistle to Dippy" (in both it's original electric-guitar version and a violin-based alternative), the island-styled zen koan "There is a Mountain," a second run at "Superlungs" that prominently features brass and guitar, and a quartet of songwriter demos that demonstrate the integral nature of John Cameron's arrangements for the album. This is a superb helping of Donovan's mix of folk, jazz, blues, pop and light psych, remastered in its original mono, with stereo for bonus tracks 13 and 15-20. [©2006 redtunictroll at hotmail dot com]

3 out of 5 stars I thought EMI would've mixed these into first-time stereo...NO WAY.......2006-04-03

Along with the first Procol Harum LP, these 1967 Donovan recordings are the last mono or rechanneled albums issued. Three tracks from this and the Mellow Yellow original LPs (Sunshine Superman, Season Of The Witch and Sunny South Kensington) have been mixed into stereo. Strangely, only Sunshine Superman is in stereo here....the other two are mono!

I'm very disappointed that they did NOT remixe Writer In The Sun, San And Foam, The Observation, Bleak City Woman, House Of Jansch, Young Girl Blues, Museum, or Hampstead Incident into stereo.

To my ears, these tracks sound no better than the US Epic original CDs.

5 out of 5 stars Sublime, the ultimate version of this classic.......2006-01-29

In a review of an import version of "Mellow Yellow" a year or so ago I wished for a proper remastering with bonus tracks to be released; this has finally happened and so here is the updated review, which is nothing but superlative. "Mellow Yellow" followed up on the quality of the previous masterpiece "Sunshine Superman" and is nearly its equal; although the Indian influence is mostly absent (save for the closing "Sunny South Kensington", which turns out to have been from the "Sunshine" sessions"), the sophisticated jazz/folk/classical arrangements are just as exquisite and particularly noteworthy tracks include the title cut, "Young Girl Blues", "Sand And Foam", "Hampstead Incident" and "Writer In The Sun". The sound quality, as on "Sunshine Superman", is now rich and full, and the bonus cuts fit perfectly with the tone of the album; of particular interest is the jazzy version of "Superlungs" and the alternate "Epistle To Dippy", both of which should have made the album in place of say, "Bleak City Woman". But now you get all the tracks, and can program them in any way you please; the liner notes are informative and this is now the definitive version of the album, one that has stood the test of time very well; Donovan's vocals here are especially resonant and beautiful.

Far more than a novelty jester, Beck is a musical anarchist and bummed-out street prophet whose audience will squirm and thrill to the slacker delta blues of "Whiskeyclone" and urban nightmares like "Truckdrivin Neighbors Downstairs." --Jeff Bateman

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars "Everyone's out to get you motherf^*&#*$!".......2007-06-19

One thing that's interesting about Beck, other than just him, is the level of ambition he has always had. In the period of 1993-1994, he even released three albums all on different record labels. Of course, being on Geffen, "Mellow Gold" was the one meant to break Beck through.

Many people always talk about "Loser", and while that's a good song, I'm honestly very sick of it. That being said, the lyrics are amusing, especially the "get crazy with the cheez whiz" line. There are a few songs that I prefer to listen to and the high points of this album are pretty high. "Motherf--ker" is one of the noisiest and rock-ish songs Beck has made and I find it amusing when his voice raises on the track. It's brilliant. I also really enjoy the final track "Blackhole" which is pretty amazing, really. It's probably my favorite song on the album, with a nice acoustic guitar leading the track, along with its quirky tune. As well as that cool bonus ending of the album that's kinda white noise-ish. "Pay No Mind (Snoozer)" and "Beercan" were singles that didn't get as much recognition but are great in their own right. The latter reminds me of some of what came on later records and is some fun.

There are a couple of tracks I don't particularly care for. I found "Truckdrivin' Neighbors Downstairs (Yellow Sweat)" to be rather annoying and I felt that a track like "Steal My Body Home" was kind of failed in its execution. I like sitar in lots of songs, but it just doesn't quite fit in here.

Like many Beck albums, this one tends to be highly regarded. While a great album, I tend to prefer Odelay and Mutations. People who don't like something offensive are better off starting elsewhere and people who like a song-structured album are better advised going with Sea Change and Guero. It'll take little while for this to sink in for some, but for most part it is worth it.

4 out of 5 stars Classic Beck.......2007-06-13

In my opinion this is Beck at his finest. It was released right before things became a little more mainstream (not that I fault him for that, it restores my faith in humanity when the mainstream actually picks up on something cool). For the Beck fan it's a must have. For the Beck-in-passing fan you may or may not like it as much as some of his later more radio friendly stuff, so make sure you give it a good listen before you buy it.

1 out of 5 stars More like Mellow _____.......2007-04-17

This is my thir dattempt at Beck. I stil don't knkow if I like him or not, because his albums seem very different. Guero was good, Midnight Vultures was absolutly _____ and souless, and this is the same way. Only it's a _______ blend of Bob Dylan Ripoff, except Beck dosen't even come close to Dylan in quality.

Loser is the only good song, the rest are _________. The problem is the folk songs. His voice is absolutly ________, just like on MIdnight Vultures, his voice is souless and boring, it's because that music has to have a voice, or else it os8unds like complete _______. Beck shouldbn't do this kind of music because he sucks at it. PLus it's boring folk. It has no melody.

Melody is what makes music, you _________. Toi the people who think that a strong melody is so ________ mainstream, that's what ________ music is based upon.

Those are my quick reasons why this album fails to be good in any ________ way. Ignore the hype.

5 out of 5 stars Alchemy.......2007-01-10

The moment that Beck took the leap from cult artist to mainstream success was just a "Loser" away. But it wasn't just that weird mash-up of folk-styles to hip-hop rhythms to a grungey lyric that did it, it was the fact that "Mellow Gold" conformed to nobody's rules. Unless you were into serious underground lo-fi music scene (the only act that rated a comparison at the time was Guided By Voices), there wasn't a thing on the popular music radar that even came close to this.

Beck Hansen had no illusions to pop stardom. Like David Bowie, his vision was just of a character called "Beck." He made off-the-cuff observations like "Truckdrivin Neighbors Downstairs" or "Soul Sucking Jerk" and mixed it with psychedelic stuff like "Steal My Body Home." He delivers hip-hop like "Beercan" and laid it next to hard rock like "Mutherf__er." And lyrically, he delivered non-sequiturs with a slacker's ease. "In the time of Chimpanzees I was a monkey:" those are the first words you hear on "Mellow Gold" and the last thing on the CD is electronic feedback squeal. Dippy, trippy, and brilliant, this now twelve year old album still sounds like nothing else out there, and there are hundreds of artists out now trying to come within touching distance. "Mellow Gold" changed the musical landscape, which, by my definition, makes it a five star album.

Ugly Americans may be on the wane, but various survivors of the Austin alt-pop outfit do turn out to support frontman Bob Schneider on this solo effort. Lonelyland showcases Schneider's competing interests as a singer-songwriter (nice Elvis Costello-like melodic turns of "Big Blue Sea") and Southern white-boy rapper (most notably on the swampy "Bullets"). But things get really strange on "The World Exploded into Love," on which a sub-Barenaked Ladies spiel is paired with full-blown female operatic accompaniment. Schneider, it turns out, is the son of an opera singer, so the song makes sense biographically, if not musically. While fans of Schneider's prior outfits (Joe Rockhead, Ugly Americans, and the Scabs) will likely find things to love on this album, Lonelyland sounds like the work of a solo artist who's still finding his own voice. --Bill Forman

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars One of the top Five CD's I own, and I have ALOT........2006-09-07

This is GREAT disc. There are only a couple of songs that aren't really really good. Oddly, 'Metal and Steel' is the song that was released on the radio in my market and is one of my least favorites. 'Bullets' is a live show favorite that he's covered many ways. '2002' is maybe his best and most intimate ballad. 'Big blue Sea' predates all the Jack Johnson surfer dude vibe. 'The world exploded into Love", "Moon Song", and "Madeline" are really beautiful melodies. And all this from the guy who brought you 'Hangin' out with the horney girls" etc. There are other songs in his wide and prolific repetior that I like as much or more, but this is his high water mark so far and the best solo disc to start with if you don't own any yet. And if that's the case, you need to take corrective action and go git yourself some right away.

5 out of 5 stars I Travel With This CD.......2006-07-16

I have had Lonelyland since the year it came out. I heard Bullets on streaming radio and was driven to find more by Bob. I couldn't so I bought the cd the same day. I fell in love with it immediately. It's a perfect blend of good singing (you can feel his voice) and great music. It is one of my favorites and it (well a copy of it) travels everywhere I do. The lyrics can stand alone as poetry on almost all the songs.

Under my skin I'm all wet
Under my skin I'm all bloody
Under my skin my heart lies broken
And my mind is acting funny

In an industry that is plagued by copycat samplers and illiterate buffoons someone with talent can get lost in the muck. I'm glad he has managed to keep his head above it all.

5 out of 5 stars WITH A BULLET.......2005-11-23

This is the real thing. Bob's a true talent. He's got the chops on guitar as well as voice. And quite the wordsmith a la Elvis Costello, Mike Doughty or Steve Earle. AND he can rap as well! A very well rounded, seasoned artist without the MTV crap that goes along with it, thank God! This CD is quite an accomplishment, with not a bad song in the bunch. My faves are Bullet, Big Blue Sea, Jingy, Round & Round, the amazing Under My Skin..Hell, the whole thing!! See this guy live as well to get what the big deal is about. His band kicks a** as well. Dangerous!!

5 out of 5 stars great tunes.......2005-06-12

first thing I ever heard from Bob, now I'm hooked. he is a must see show. rock on.

5 out of 5 stars Great eclectic mix!.......2005-06-07

I moved to Dallas from Austin about 5 years ago, and honestly, the thing that I miss the MOST is going to see Lonelyland shows - sitting front row in a little pub with regulars who knew every word!

While I'm not a huge fan of Bob's more provocative group The Scabs, I can still appreciate them musically. However, Lonelyland is a perfect blend of musicians with Bob at center stage. His gruff voice carries so much character. The lyrics are deep and not one-dimensional; they range from heartache to joyfullness to love, etc.

I have been baffled for many years as to why (other than musical billing in a few Sandra Bullock movies) he hasn't hit it bigger nationally. The sound of his music is so eclectic that you are sure to find at least one song that suits your musical taste buds (probably more). My personal favorites are Round and Round, and Bullets.

Listen to the samples, and then buy this CD! If you're anything like me, you'll wear it out.

With a couple of exceptions, the showroom- and talk-show-ready Temptations of In a Mellow Mood (1967) are handed the most impersonal, clichéd sort of standards. "Hello Young Lovers," "Try to Remember," and too many others here go through the motions of connecting with listeners but are so haplessly written that the reined-in quintet is hard-pressed to fill them with more than a thimbleful of sweat. "Somewhere" is a foolproof melody that might have made a fine change of pace on a record like With a Lot o' Soul, but this version of "Who Can I Turn To (When Nobody Needs Me)" has none of the redeeming qualities of Dionne Warwick's. Paradoxically blessed with little of the class the group normally commanded, Mellow Mood stands as an expression of Berry Gordy's worst aesthetic impulses. --Rickey Wright

I love ONJ I still do always will. However being here in 2006 and listening to her 1970's recordings. Her youth and voice then just had this perfection amazing feeling. These recordings could not sound and be made today. It's a 70's organic cushion. It's so warm and so long ago that you sit and wonder about time travel. Everytime I see and hear anything from that time you just had to be there (especially as a child) Being a 70's child can hurt. The times are so differen't now and your headed toward 40 but your haunted by the era. I understand young people of today who were born in the 1980's and etc don't understand this. But I have talked to too many people in my age group and they understand what I'm talking about. A joyful simplistic time that's long gone. I keep looking for it. It can be very painful. It's only in our memories

3 out of 5 stars Just an OK album for me...but that VOICE!.......2006-05-27

Ok, die-hard fans, don't hate me, but this really is just an average album for me. Most of the songs, I can do without, especially that "Water Under The Bridge". I just think Olivia's voice is so much 'better' than that song. But, there are really nice, tender moments too. My absolute favourite would have to be "And In The Morning". This song just breaks your heart and Olivia is very good at that. She is the ultimate balladeer and she uses her instrument in such a way that you can get lost in that beautiful voice. At the end of this song, she gives a really heartfelt adlib and hits all those high notes so achingly beautiful, you don't know what hit you. Next, would be "The Air That I Breathe". It is better than the original. She puts a big, fat stamp on it and makes it all her own. Awesome. Besides these two biggies, I also like the title track "Have You Never Been Mellow". Boy, can John Farrar write! Although this song was such a big hit for Olivia and you know how big hits can go...you lose that freshness as the years go by...and you kinda don't want to listen to it because it's been "listened" to death already, but HYNBM is just one of those songs that you can never get fed up with no matter how many times you have listened to it. Sheer brilliance. And of course, there's "Please, Mister, Please. A pleasant enough melody to sing along to and I have heard Olivia sing this "Live" and I have to say that the "Live" version of this song is so much better than the recording.

A last word...if you don't like any of the songs in it, just buy the cd for the cover pic. Olivia is gorgeous. Look at those eyes...if I were a guy...oh, well...

5 out of 5 stars A shining example of Newton-John's 1970's output.......2003-04-01

'Have You Never Been Mellow', in my eyes, marks the beginning of Olivia's US music career. Her first four albums had been primarily British-based, with only one or two moderate American successes to her name. However by 1975 it seemed America couldn't resist the Newton-John charm and openly embraced both her and her music, giving Olivia two #1 hits in the form of the title track and this album itself.

A lot of the output from here on in up until Olivia's change of image in 1978 is a little patchy. Trying to bridge the gap between pop, Barbra-lite easy listening and country-folk, one gets the impression that she was almost trying too hard with a rate of two new studio albums a year. Luckily, 'Have You Never Been Mellow' manages to successfully merge the dreamy British feel of her first four records with the more commercial, FM-radio based feel of Olivia's American career.

The album is a joy from start to finish. It opens with 'Have You Never Been Mellow', still a pleasure all these years later and seemingly a favourite with Olivia too as she always seems to perform it live. Lovely lyrics and a gorgeous sentiment all wrapped up into a dreamy little package. 'Loving Arms', 'Lifestream' and 'I Never Did Sing You A Lovesong' are inoffensive radio fodder of the mid-seventies with Olivia's lamenting vocals and pleasant instrumentation. The record also includes two John Denver covers, an ingenious idea, combining Olivia's remarkable vocal strength with John's heartwrenching lyrics and melodies. 'Goodbye Again' and 'Follow Me' are definite highlights.

Olivia also tries her hand at a couple of uptempos, not uptempos by 'Physical' standards but certainly along the lines of the light and peppy pop tunes she was recording back in Britain. 'Water Under The Bridge' is 'Banks Of The Ohio' with less twang, faster pace, and better lyrics, and 'It's So Easy' is similarly pleasing. (I love the footage of Olivia singing this at a televised New Years' Eve party in 1975; she gets to the end of the song, walks up some stairs, trips, and squeals into the microphone. Ahhh, bless!)

A couple of songs of particular note include the beautiful 'Please Mr Please' which has become an Olivia standard, her breathtaking cover of the Everly Brothers' 'The Air That I Breathe' (I would go as far to say that this may be the quintessential recording of this tune) as well as a rather dark little song about one-night stands called 'And In The Morning'. Reminds me quite a bit of 'Amoureuse' from the 'Let Me Be There' (aka 'Music Makes My Day') record.

Add to that, of course, the 'Let Me Be There' copycat 'If You Love Me (Let Me Know)' which is infinitely better than its predecessor, and you have a very enjoyable summary of Olivia's early career. The album is cohesive, sharp, and lovingly warm. A definite must-have in any fan's collection.

5 out of 5 stars A brilliant album from 1975.......2003-03-26

This album contains three big American hits - the title track, Please Mr Please and If you love me let me know - but this album is of a high quality throughout. In style, it is very typical of Olivia's early music, with a nice mix of ballads and upbeat songs. The general mood of the album is upbeat.

There are covers of two John Denver songs (Follow me and Goodbye again), The air that I breathe (originally recorded by Phil Everly but made famous by the Hollies), Lifestream (Rick Nelson). Loving arms is a song that has been covered frequently, including by Elvis Presley and, more recently, the Dixie Chicks.

There are some great originals apart from the hits already mentioned. It's so easy sounds very upbeat, but the music belies the lyrics. Water under the bridge, And in the morning and I never did sing you a love song are all lovely ballads.

If you like pop-country music of the seventies, this is definitely worth listening to.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting listening.......2007-04-11

If you're looking for the moody mellow music to help you along your depressed funk of a day, this is the disc for you. It has great story telling ability and is an interesting alternative to sappy slow songs. I think it is a must have for those days when you need some music to cry to.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Sadness .......2006-09-19

Dreamy and soothing, Trespassers William captures the feeling of being lost and soulful on a lonely night. I fell in love with the song "Untitled" after hearing it on a community music site, then had to buy the CD on the assumption that the whole thing was equally gratifying. I wasn't disappointed! These lullabies are about being detached from love and warmth and craving it:

It is too late to feel like a numb skin
Say that you've harpooned me, am I a prize then
I am lost as the sea, you tell me what I see
Love was supposed to save me

With its twangy guitar and soft, clear feminine vocals, this music will appeal to fans of Mazzy Star.

5 out of 5 stars One of my all time favorites.......2006-04-15

This is the CD that got me interested in the ethereal, shoe-gaze style of music. The songs are easy on the ears and lovely, yet also haunting. Anna-Lynne wisely stopped trying to belt out a song as she did on some of the tracks of TW's first album, Anchor. Instead, she's toned down her voice and to me sounds much better singing in this low-key style. The band's music is outstanding. All in all, one of my favorites and one I continue to enjoy hearing.

5 out of 5 stars ear champagne.......2006-03-15

If ever there was a mythical creature forever captured in the throes of deeply mournful loss and yearning and had an enchanted voice with which to lure in unsuspecting susceptibles to her eternal heartache - Anna-Lynne would be it's embodiment. I haven't the adjectives to describe something so beautiful yet so wrenching. Something so worthy of adoration.

If you're new to TW I recommend this be your introduction. No matter your preferred genre I can't fathom the possibility that anyone could be exposed to this music and not be profounding and permenantly altered.

100% bliss on a laser disk. -Frank

5 out of 5 stars Smooth as an espresso martini.......2006-03-03

Too often, I arrive at an Amazonian description and find People Preaching To The Converted reviews ("what would Jesus do...? Well, He couldn't do better than this masterpiece, it's Sgt. Pepper meets Nevermind meets Songs in the Key of Life, and John Lennon would've given his left n*t to write this stuff") or The Other Side of The Coin review ("I bought this POS on someone's recommendation, and it was SO F-ING BAD, I shot the person who recommended it and left 'im for dead...buzzards gotta eat, same as the worms...").

(...melodramatic pause...)

If you enjoy dream pop, spend your money here. It's a cousin to Mazzy Star's "Fade Into You", but better, since Anna-Lynne Williams has more bite to her voice (check out how she phrases the word "burns" in the lyric "when the house burns down" on the glorious "Alone"), and this album boasts a superior number of "(g)ently mesmerizing ... haunting" songs by comparison to "So Tonight That I Might See" (the standouts, in order: Alone, Fragment, Lie in the Sound, Different Stars, Vapour Trail. I repeat, these are the standouts, not a roster of The Only Good Songs).

A closer analogy is the sound of Chris Isaak's "Wicked Game", but with the guitars turned way way up, past Jangling, past Gleaming Byrd-like twelve-string, past Reverberating, all the way to Shimmering (plus, at times, you get delicate piano, like all the piano hammers had been fitted with booties knitted by your sweet ole Grandma). It has that echoing Western Landscape night-time feel (whadda want, I'm not getting paid to write this). The sound is so lush, if you transmitted it to orbiting satellites and beamed it back to Earth, you'd get world peace.

No, really.

In short, this is the sort of thing for people who like this sort of thing.

    5 out of 5 stars deliciously tempting.......2005-05-15

I always thought the "I Wish It Would Rain" album was one of the Tempts' best work.Every song on the album was strong as steel. My favorites were; Cindy, I Could Never Love Another, Please Return Your Love To Me,and He Who Picks A Rose(that's darn near all of the album!).That's my point. The album is solid from beginning to end! "In A Mellow Mood",while a decent effort from the Tempts, was more a commercial album that attempted to capitalize on their crossover appeal. The Tempts do a lot of covers on this one.One of the notable efforts is "Old Man River",with Melvin's resonant bass spearheading the tune.A great addition to any Tempts' fan's collection.

    3 out of 5 stars Odd Coupling.......2005-03-28

According to the liner notes, the Temptations line-up for both these albums was David Ruffin, Eddie Kendricks and Otis Williams (tenor vocals), Paul Williams (baritone vocal) and Melvin Franklin (bass vocal), but by the time The Temptations Wish It Would Rain had come out in August 1968, David Ruffin had left the group and gone solo to Motown the month before. Dennis Edwards had already taken his place on stage and may be present on some of the more recent of these recordings. Mostly produced by Norman Whitfield, the album was to yield four singles in the US, the UK or both, including the memorable I Wish It Would Rain, the first Motown single to include sound effects and a US Top Five hit. It came out in December 1967, preceding the album by nine months, and appears here at a four-second foreshortened 2.42.

Like its follow up, I Could Never Love Another (After Loving You), also with one of David Ruffin's most heartfelt vocals, the lyric to I Wish It Would Rain was written by Roger Penzabene, who was vividly experiencing the emotions he wrote about in his songs for the Temptations and Gladys Knight and the Pips (End Of Our Road) from this time, and who was to commit suicide before he could benefit from their success.

Former regular producer Smokey Robinson contributes two songs; Cindy, which could easily have been a single had Norman Whitfield allowed it, and the cheerier up-tempo Fan The Flame. Gonna Give Her All The Love I've Got is their version of the song Norman Whitfield had already given Jimmy Ruffin a hit with. He Who Picks A Rose was later covered by the Carstairs and Rare Earth, and by Edwin Starr on the B-side of his hit War. The Henry Cosby-produced I Truly Truly Believe was led by Melvin Franklyn and was an R&B hit in its own right after appearing as the B-side of I Wish It Would Rain. The album closer had a classic Motown sound and groove. No Man Can Love Her Like A Do had a rare composer credit for Eddie Kendricks and was co-written with Norman Whitfield and Motown-mainstay Eddie Holland.

This was to be the last album in the classic Temptations style as the next release debuted their new acid soul sound. This was even more startling given that the album that had preceded this one was a selection of Broadway standards.

Berry Gordy, the label boss, always had one business foot in the more sophisticated (i.e. square) adult (particularly white adult) mainstream market, and a number of his acts found themselves recording live albums at the Talk Of The Town or the Copa, or in the studio for a glitzy collection of jazzed-up standards, and the Temptations were no exception.

In A Mellow Mood is an odd coupling as it was full of show tunes like Hello, Young Lovers (from The King and I), Somewhere (from West Side Story), Try to Remember (from The Fantasticks) (perhaps inspiring Gladys Knight), Who Can I Turn To (from The Roar Of The Greasepaint, The Roar Of The Crowd) and Ol' Man River (from Showboat).

On Ol' Man River, for which Melvin Franklyn sings a bass lead, they wisely use the less racist lyric revision by Paul Robeson, who originally sang it. The Frank Sinatra song book is raided for That's Life, For Once in My Life and The Impossible Dream (the latter from Man Of La Mancha), and Gilbert Bécaud's popular What Now My Love? is aired along with several others.

The oddest track is a reworking of the Holland-Dozier-Holland tune I'm Ready For Love, a hit for Martha and the Vandellas the year before. It retains its traditional bass line and tempo but a jazz element has been added. This sits uncomfortably at first both with memories of the original and with the rest of this album, but becomes addictive after a couple of listens and then seems far too short. The Motown house band does an absolutely fantastic job throughout, showing they can be play in any style with ease, whilst the Temptations show that they are equally adept in the harmony department, though one does wonder what these outings did for their credibility and positioning as spokesmen for the hip radical left

4 out of 5 stars A few more tastes of honey before the grit took over!.......2001-08-16

By the late 1960s, R&B music was changing towards a grittier, more socially conscious sound courtesy of cutting edge artists like Sly & The Family Stone, James Brown & George Clinton (even though he had only released the single "I Wanna Testify" with the Parliaments at the time). While a lot of R&B acts were changing with the times, Motown Records was still a bit set in its ways by 1968. The emphasis was still on music smooth enough to make the pop charts, which it often did. Occasionally, a song or two would reflect the more modernized sound of R&B on a Motown album, but one group had been slowly working towards the rougher sound for a few years by 1968, and they were the Temptations. They had recently enlisted the production team of Norman Whitfield & Barrett Strong after Smokey Robinson quit working with them full-time. Whitfield & Strong's approach to recording was something more rootsy than the polished sound of Smokey. So just when it seemed the Tempts were about to lose their momentum, the new sound was a kick in the pants for them. But before they truly adopted the funkier soul sound on 1969's CLOUD NINE, their previous two albums were still in the smoother vein of their past work, but a few hints of the future were evident.

1968's WISH IT WOULD RAIN was just like any other album from a Motown group, one that basically followed a single or three, with some pleasant filler in between. But this album I think was one of the Tempts lesser-known hits, which is why I'm reviewing it before all the others. The title track opens with a gospel-sounding piano that eventually gives way to the rough-but-honey-sweet vocal of David Ruffin on a song that in fact managed to top the R&B charts and peak at #4 pop. Once again, the high position belies the fact that this song isn't one of the Tempts' better-known classics. Probably because it doesn't get more requests than "My Girl". The album's other two hit singles deserve some attention. "I Could Never Love Another [After Loving You]" contains the stately strings that so defined Motown's golden age, also with another great lead from David Ruffin, who would leave the Tempts shortly after this album. This song topped R&B again, but missed the pop top 10. It's a shame, because it really deserved to do better. But with Ruffin's days numbered in the Tempts, the last hit single from WISH IT WOULD RAIN, "Please Return Your Love To Me", had the boyish falsetto of Eddie Kendricks singing it. Of course, this was one of those good-but-not-great songs, but the fact that it made only #26 pop shows that either radio thought it wasn't a surefire seller, or that Motown thought the same & decided not to promote it vigourously. If you thought Eddie sounded good on "Just My Imagination", his vocal on "Please Return" is not far behind. Elsewhere, the album contains some lesser-known songs that whether or not they're good depends on the listener themselves. But some are notable, however. The Tempts' former producer Smokey Robinson returns to write & produce two great-as-expected songs, "Cindy" & "Fan The Flame". While "Get Ready"'s failure to become a big hit lead to the end of the Tempts' working with Smokey, those two songs prove the old magic hadn't been lost in the meantime. "I Truly, Truly Believe" should be noted for it being sung by Melvin Franklin, the bass voice of the Temptations. Most often, bass singers are relegated to the background, but that song proves Franklin should have been given more leads like this. The only thing wrong with "This Is My Beloved" is that it barely lasts two minutes long & could have paid to be fleshed out a bit more. Finally, the closing "No Man Can Love Her Like I Do" was co-written by Eddie Kendricks, which is strange considering Motown's legendary Svengali-like attitude toward its acts. Most often, the singers sang & the writers wrote, but not necessarily both. A song like this proves maybe there were times when Motown allowed a little more creative freedom for its acts.

All in all, WISH IT WOULD RAIN was a good album from the time when the Tempts were still making music easily palatable by pop music fans as much as soul. With Sly & The Family Stone coming into their own, they probably realized they needed to keep up with the times, so either they or at least Whitfield & Strong decided to steer the Tempts in a more modernized direction from then on. While the music would soon be more ambitious & cutting edge, WISH IT WOULD RAIN is a good last gasp for the smoother brand of R&B that had brought the Temptations their first acclaim.

P.S. Check my review of IN A MELLOW MOOD on the remastered version of that album. I reviewed WISH IT WOULD RAIN here because it doesn't seem to be available anymore in the U.S.

Just when you thought you'd lined your CD shelf with enough lullaby collections to render your kid Rip Van Winkle comatose, along comes Sherry Goffin Kondor and conks you over the head with her credentials. Not only is she a mom and the founder of a kids' music label, she's Carole King's daughter--this last bearing special significance because the same music-as-comfort-food sensibility that informed the Hall of Famer's best songs has seeped, through some genetic magic, into Kondor's vocal chords. Standbys like "Brahms Lullaby," "Rockabye Baby," and "Over the Rainbow" sound several degrees warmer than even your most groove-worn renditions, and gentle covers of "Betcha by Golly Wow," "Child of Mine," and "Never Never Land" come off as custom-made for Kondor ("Child" was, actually--King and husband Gerry Goffin wrote it for their daughter when she was a tot). Raising this record's reel-you-in factor are the King-Kondor collaboration "Island of Dreams," on which King contributes background vocals, and the drifting, reassuring "With You in Your Dreams," penned by King with Greg Wells and Dean Miller. Once Kondor's 13 tracks run their course, up-instrumental versions of each song follow, with complete lyrics listed in the liner notes, so your child can hear how you stack up against a pedigreed pro. But don't let the pressure get to you. Should your inner songbird fly her coop, simply heap on the teddies, hit the nightlight, and hightail it out the door. --Tammy La Gorce

    5 out of 5 stars A Means of Survival.......2007-05-05

My Mom bought this for me when I was pregnant. I was going to have twins! When I first listened to it, I found it too mellow and boring. Little did I know that it would become a means of survival to sooth twin baby girls to sleep and to sooth me in between six feedings every night. I truely appreciated the calmness and beautiful melodies it provided. Now my girls are four, and I will always keep this cd and enjoy it. Although they still keep me busy, now I can reminese of the time when they were just wee things.

    5 out of 5 stars Incredible!!.......2006-07-09

I literally loathe repetition...HOWEVER...I have been using this since my nearing-three-year-old was born every time I put him down for naps or nighttime sleep and sleep interruptions and even I still love to listen to it. My son even asks for it to be put on when he lays down. The woman's voice is incredibly soothing. She sings 13 songs and then it's the instrumental versions thereafter for a total of around an hour and fifteen minutes. It's been an absolutely wonderful tool for signaling when it's sleep time. I highly recommend this CD!

This is a peaceful, beautifully sung compilation of lullabies that are soothing to put baby to bed with.

    5 out of 5 stars A True Bedtime Savior!!!.......2003-02-20

On a whim, my wife got this CD for our 2 1/2 year-old daughter. Before it, getting her to bed was a 2-hour process of frustration. Now we're down to about 20 minutes.

It goes, storytime, good night to her stuffed animals then Lullaby Time. No crying, no repeated requests to "Please go to sleep" -- she hits Play on the CD player and listens peacefully until she falls to sleep.

A great, great CD that I have to admit, I find myself singing from time to time.

    5 out of 5 stars Amazing!.......2002-08-14

If you only buy one CD for listening to with your newborn, this is it! My baby is just 11 weeks old and we listen to "Mellow my baby" over and over again every day. My husband, who is not too into lullabys, catches himself singing the songs even when the CD isn't playing! It's been wonderful and I know we will continue to listen to it while our daughter grows and can sing the songs herself. This would be a perfect gift for all new mothers, and it's what my friends will be receiving for their new babies.
