Too many reissue compilations are content to merely slice 'n' dice familiar catalog choices in not particularly original ways. But this four-disc, 91-track trove of obscure '70s R&B and funk from Warner-distributed labels great and small argues there's still treasure to be gleaned from studio vaults--a five-hour groove-fest that's as interested in shaking booty as in opening ears. Even the genre's groundbreaking usual suspects (Wilson Pickett, the Bar-Kays, Curtis Mayfield, Earth, Wind & Fire, et al) are represented by selections that aren't immediately familiar, while Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin serves up a radically different, previously unreleased take of "Rock Steady." Still other stars contribute their sonic touches to some of the lesser-known cuts, as witnessed by the patent trippiness of Sly Stone alter-egos 6ix and Stanga on "I'm Just Like You" and "Little Sister," respectively; the stark, party-not-so-hearty contrast of the Mayfield-written-and-produced "Hard Times" by Baby Huey & Baby Sisters; and the Meters' version of "Tampin'," released under the moniker of the Rhine Oaks.

Sequenced in rough chronological order, it's a savvy window into a musical evolution as well, with the rhythmic guitars, organ swells, and horn flourishes of traditional '60s R&B giving way to sinewy synths and increasingly chunky bass lines as the decade grooves on. While savvy hip-hoppers will note that many of the rarities here have already been repurposed by shrewd mixers, it's a revelation to hear them in their original form. A compelling deconstruction of an often clichéd and too-narrowly-defined genre, this is an anthology that showcases music that has influenced such contemporary artists as Tupac, the Beastie Boys, Snoop Dogg, and Kanye West, annotated by many of the original musicians who set the dance floor in motion. --Jerry McCulley

Rare indeed; I can't imagine where you would find original 45s or even LPs containing all of these songs. That would be one lifetime task. The good folks at Rhino Records with their remarkable and creative tastes took out all of that hassle for us and now offers a rather unique set of rare funky music from the vaults of Atlantic/Atco and Warner/Reprise dating 1967-1977 with 91 tracks spanning across 4 filled-to-the-brim discs. Any soul music fan will no doubt want to explore this area of the R&B category (funk and I mean pure funk), but at times the flow of the music could seem a bit too much to handle. Some of the cuts go more than 3 1/2 minutes and sound like they might not end any time soon. The other case would be some tracks sound bizarre or unusual in terms of sound due to instrumentation, arrangements, etc. Such "bizarre" tracks are the sitar-laced rendition of "Jumpin' Jack Flash", "Steppin' Stones" with a crazed flautist leading the way on a very blazing and dizzy-sounding track. The good outweigh the not-so-good remarkably, though. So get ready to hear punchy horns, infectious, simplistic and driving drumbeats, super funky bass lines, crunchy guitars, oozing organs and ultra-soulful vocals. On disc one, some noteworthy tracks are "Spreadin' Honey", "Get Otta My Life Woman", "Snatchin' It Back", "Sexy Coffee Pot" and "Help Me Make Up My Mind" (an answer to "Can I Chane My Mind"). Be sure to check out "Sookie Sookie", "Feelin' Alright" (done by Lulu (To Sir With Love)!), and "Engine Number Nine" on disc two, "Face It" (love the female backup singers on this), "Wah Wah Man", an alternate extended mix of "Rock Steady", "Suavecito", and "Nuki Suki" (from Little Richard) on disc three as well as "Moon Shadow", "Kissing My Love", "Everything I Do Gonna Be Funky", "Chug Chug-A-Lug", "Everybody Wanna Get Rich Rite Away", and "Chicken Heads" on disc four. Those were just some of my favorite tracks, so I may have missed some. Many are instrumentals, but there are a handful with vocalists singing about love, dancing, partying, social concerns, etc. Bottom line: worth checking out and worth the discovery. You definitely won't hear this stuff on commercial radio. Only about three or four songs you'll recognize; the rest is like a surprise. If you're into R&B and want to explore the funk side of it, you can't find a better pick, and about 90% of these songs aren't available (some or many) together anyplace else. The real deal of funk; that is "what it is!"

WHAT IT IS ?.....NOTHING BUT A NON STOP PARTY! .......2007-02-10

This set right here could very well be the holy grail of rare and hard to find grooves. This box set is funkier than a high school locker room! Every track on here is certified stank(aka funky). The most amazing thing about these tracks is that they capture the spirit of the times better than a lot of their more popular comtemporaries(at least in my opinion). "What it is" feels like an audio documentary of underdogs making the funkiest music and having a great time doing it. If you listen to how these tracks are sequenced, you'll feel like a story is being told - rather than just listening to another compliamation of vintage r&b music.

I'm only 25 years old. Every time I play this set, I feel like I'm at a 70's block party, chillin' in a long black cadillac fleetwood and scoping out some foxy mamas with hot pants and thigh high leather boots
(that's how good the music sounds). With 20 plus tracks each per disc, you can't help but be amazed with the consistent quality of the music.

All I gotta say is buy this set and let the funk be your guide to love, happiness, and your rites of passage to throw it on down and dance your
a-- off!!! If you ain't diggin on this, you're diggin a hole for yourself!

This is the real deal folks. Music with grit and soul and feeling, before the shining distraction of drum machines, computers, samplers, bling, and "MTV's Cribs". I saw an ad for this and went to several book and record stores such as Borders, and to my local hip indie CD store (headquarters to the local music scene circle-jerk), trying to describe it to various clerks. Which was about like trying to teach a card trick to a basset hound. Save yourself the agony of trying to interest a white twenty-something body-piercing pincushion in ordering this set for you, and just get it here. You'll be glad you did. The sheer quantity of great music on this is staggering. I love the mix of instruments with vocal tracks, and the mix of "name" artists like Aretha or The Meters with many very obscure ones. Whoever compiled this did a great job in selecting the track order, so it makes it perfect for a long party. Everyone will be getting up and shaking their groove thang. This is priceless music from a lost era, so grab it before it disappears again.

Never a dull moment.......2007-01-28

I am a funk fan who is still by all means learning...With the passing of James Brown recently, I have tried to speed up this process a little and take as much in as possible. I think this collection of "underground" funk is phenomenal, 4 discs and never a dull moment.

I stumbled over this set just a few days ago, and I have to say that it's easily one of the top 10 best random-artist compilations I've ever heard in my life, and I own hundreds of them.

I won't say there's no filler--by filler I mean the cover tunes--and I'm confused as to why "What So Never The Dance" is credited to the Houseguests when this is a longtime Bootsy Collins track? What, is Bootsy in trouble with Warner Brothers and can't re-release his own stuff under his own name anymore?

But disc one is an absolute gem--you can't make your own mix better than they've done it here. If you're a fan of James Brown, Parliament, Otis Redding, Sly Stone, the aforementioned Bootsy, Tower Of Power, Prince, early Stevie Wonder, Motown, Isaac Hayes, then you shouldn't be without this set.

Absolutely worth buying.

I'm not a huge fan of Fatboy Slim but this CD is great. Most of the songs you can hear all the time and there were a few I have not heard of at all. While most of these pay on commericals or in movies (mainstream) its good background music for parties.

Who IS Fatboy Slim?.......2007-01-12

Well, I had NO IDEA who he was. Until I listened to this CD and recognized almost EVERY SINGLE ONE of the songs on it! These songs have been in TV commercials, movies, etc. We bought one for my brother in law for Christmas. EXCELLENT CD!!!! If you want to get a Fatboy Slim CD, this is the one to get.

This is what happens when you compile the best songs of one of the best DJs ever. If you're a big fan, there's not much new here, and those who collect many CDs probably have most if not all of these tracks already. But if you're a big fan, as I am, having the collection "under one roof" is worth the additional cost.

I've been a casual fan of Fatboy Slim for years, but have never delved into their entire body of work. However, since I picked up this CD, I've become addicted. Why Try Harder is a great into to Fatboy Slim. Give it a try, and I'm sure you'll love it too. BTW - the new track "That Old Pair of Jeans" is the best FBS track yet.

As Matthew Blissmer said in his review, this is a GREAT CD to put on for friends that don't want to hear the (often excessively) long versions of each of the songs. I always ran into that problem... I loved the songs but they had awkward lead-in and lead-outs. In "Why Try Harder?", ALL the songs are beautifully edited, starting and stopping at exactly perfect times for the full effect of the song. No minute-long lead-out for "Going Out of My Head", and "Brimful of Asha" (one of my favorites) is cut perfectly down to size from the 7:30 full cut.

I can put this in a CD player and hit Shuffle and not be nervous about hitting an embarrassing song. They're all great.

If you're new to Fatboy Slim, or you've been following him for years, it doesn't matter, this is your CD. Clean up all those illegally-downloaded albums and mixes you were too hesitant to purchase, because this has it all in one neatly packaged, easily-purchasable CD! Time to pay your respects to the totally awesome Norman Cook in this totally awesome collection. Why look harder?

Excellent for the casual listener.......2007-07-29

According to all other reviews by hardcore fans, everyone seems to be dissapointed that this is all material they have heard before. So what about the casual Rabbit in the Moon fan, who hasn't heard many of these songs? I enjoyed the Floorida remix album as well as some other remixes RITM has done, but have yet to attend a live show of theirs. Therefore, coming into this album without any pretenses, I am pleased to say it is just what I was hoping for. Dark and deep, juicy with their signature tech/electro sound. This album really doesn't leave anything to be desired, especially with the vocals by Bunny. I think for the casual listener who hasn't heard all of these songs, this album will be a better experience. Still, even for those who have heard and seen it already, isn't it great to finally have all of the original material all on one remastered disc, plus an amazing DVD?

Long Awaited, and a Fantastic DVD.......2007-07-16

As a DJ, I have had access to Rabbit in the Moon material over the past 10 years, as it was released single-by-single. Like many of their fans, I was hooked on Dave Christophere's audio wizardry with the haunting and evolving O.O.B.E. - (mistakenly labeled "Outer" Body Experience on the liner notes - though not a surprising tactic for a new remix.). Several of the track on this new album have been previously released as singles, and/or have been included in their live performances. Though some may find this a bit anticlimactic, it should be noted that everything has been remastered to a degree that it actually does seem new and fresh.

As others have noted, RITM is best experienced as a live act. The music is brought to life through the larger-than-life, kabuki theater-like performance and vocalizations of Bunny (Steve Eachon). Perhaps RITM are destined to become the Grateful Dead of modern Techno, as every show is different, and devoted fans follow their shows, and see them again and again, noting the slight changes to the mixes and song selections, and the ever evolving and exciting Bunny Experience.

With that in mind, it is only natural that they would include a DVD that included some of their live material, along with new and creative original video along with the CD.

The quality of the video and audio on this package is flawless and very entertaining for old and new Rabbit fans. One can only hope that they gather momentum from this release to tour heavily, and release another album of completely new material within the next 18 months. The newer material also has more vocals by Bunny, which I find to be an excellent trend which they should continue to develop in their music and live shows.

A great release from a the legendary RITM!.......2007-07-13

I think this is a *fanstatic* release, mostly because of the DVD content, but I like the CD a lot as well. Being the fan that I am, I couldn't give this any less than 5 stars for that DVD content being what it is. Yes, there is some dated stuff on the album, but it is called "Decade", and the song "Deeper" alone justifies that title. I see some of the other reviewers who are fans, but giving it low-star reviews, that's really too bad. It may be because they were expecting a full new CD of all new material, and didn't get that. Still, I see that those of us who "know the deal", so to speak, know that the essence of Rabbit In The Moon is the live show, I think the DVD content gives a pretty close approximation to what it's actually like to see them live. But tell me, who, of the RITM fans among us, especially those who have seen them live in the least year, didn't FLIP out when they were listening to the "Decade" CD and heard the phrase "Look into the eye!" for the first time, on track 8.. with memories flooding in of Bunny with his TV-on-a-stick?? I know I did. And that song is followed by the AMAZING rendition of David Bowie's "Let's Dance", followed by Deeper (which is admittedly old
but is a classic and couldn't be excluded) but then there's a brand new mix of O.B.E. that, correct me if I'm wrong, has never been released before. (And I own the original Phases O.B.E. 12" record). I love the new mix of that song, and I think it's a great album, even though every single song doesn't thrill me. But even with this CD, some of the older RITM songs that I never really liked much before, like Dubbasex for example, listened carefully and given them another chance, and found they are actually very subtle and beautiful songs.

There is more newer material on the album than some reviewers let on, in fact well over half of it is new. There are a few ommissions, IMO, for example I would have liked to see "Electro Accupuncture" on this CD, but then again that has been released before on a CD, still I think it would have fit in well here though as well. I love the DVD the most, because it reminds me why I've been such a huge fan for so many years, with probably about 7 shows under my belt. To all the fans out there, buy this album! Show your support! Remember the old Zen Festial 96-97 shows, with Bunny, in his disco-ball suit, being lowered by a cable from the ceiling! remember how you felt at those times. They have earned our suport! To those folks new to the electronica genre, this is a good glimpse into understanding the engima that is Rabbit in the Moon... RITM so much more than can possible be described in one album, album review, DVD, magazine article, or antyhing else. There's a whole history and culture behind these guys'one-of-a-kind stlye of performance art, and I think this release captures the essence of it almost as best you could with the amount of material provided. Buy it for the DVD, but then take the audio CD, put in in your car stereo, put on track 8, and crank it up!

Great yet lacking.......2007-07-12

So, if your a rabbit head like me, you've probably heard most of these tracks at their shows. So why is this CD a great purchase? Quite simply because you are a rabbit head and they need our support. If you're new to Rabbit in the Moon then you need to hear what the music is about. The really cool feature is that in the DVD each suit comes with an explanation which will help new listeners/show goers to understand the meaning of the show as a whole and the suits individually. Are there tracks missing? Absolutely. The now famous jungle track used for the dragon slaying sequence is missing, so is the old light suit track which is a favorite amongst show goers. However, the single most significant fact about this release is the release it self. If this goes good, we will see a new Rabbit in the Moon CD sometime soon. Remember, this is their first attempt at this, so lets support them. After all, they have been connecting to us for over a decade, the least we can do is buy the CD.

Yes, many of the tracks have been previously released. Yes, much of the album sounds like a product of the 90s. Should that be a problem if the music is good?

This album is a great electronic work from all sides. The album kicks off strong with Trip Like I Do a sexily danceable and hard hitting track that gets you in the groove for all tracks after. Highlight tracks like Busy Child, Keep Hope Alive, Vapor Trail, Bad Stone, Trip Like I Do, and most of the rest make it a Techno album I immensely enjoy.

Their Signature CD.......2007-01-12

As someone coming from the less electronic, more funky mixes of Thievery Corporation, Tosca and K&D, I was a little hesitant to buy Vegas, but I'm glad that I did. Normally I don't care for the over-the-top bass and decidedly weak and unoriginal synth compositions you normally get in college bars or big city clubs (anyone with even moderate talent can produce that stuff with Live or GarageBand and the right collection of loops), but this is something totally apart from that. You can dance to Vegas, yes... it's got some intoxicating grooves... but it's also real music and not just the same sequences played over and over for 5 minutes like many of their peers. It's techno with soul.

What this reminds me of a little bit is the Fight Club soundtrack, although it's not as hard-edged as that work (from the Dust Brothers), with some funky beats and sounds perfectly mixed in at the right times. These guys are pretty talented and their studio skills are apparent. If you're going to buy one Crystal Method CD, based on everything I've heard and read, this is absolutely the one to get. Definitely recommended.

The Most Supernatural Album Ever Composed!!! A Jewel For Any Music Collection!!!.......2006-11-09

Unclaimed and unfamiliar to the sounds of Drum and Bass and Electronica, it was the compilation of this original work, Vegas, that captured my ears with awe. Ever since the fat beats and sounds of this composition swelled my sense of hearing I have praised this Album by Crystal Method. This CD is one that will forever be included in my music collection and worthy to be replayed time and time again. Not many CDs in my large collection has such an acclaimed privilege, Nor are many CDs deserving of such.

Based on the resounding effect of this album, I label it as the MOST SUPERNATURAL ALBUM EVER COMPOSED for this genre. Some CM fans complain that this album is too highly extolled and therefore praise one album over another. A true Crystal Method zealot wouldn't do that. Doing that defames the group as a whole. Although I own this Album, I own other ones by Crystal Method and they are also valued. Equally respecting all albums hightens the credibility of the artists. Whether anyone agrees with this fact or not, briefly think about how many times you've heard music by the Crystal Method featured in television ads, television shows, video games, and theme parks (about three tracks from this specific album is played as background music in the waiting lines @ Six Flags Magic Mountain). What does this tell us? The music by Crystal Method is highly recognized. Yet, based on the average music junky, when a word about Crystal Method is made, this Album "Vegas" is readily distinguished. This just happens to be the jewel among their many CDs.

The beats recorded on this album are unique and perfectly executed, the complexity of this music is obviously mastered by Ken Jordan and Scott Kirkland. Not one track on this CD is the same, yet each and every track is an astounding original creation that creates its own attitude and setting with its adrenaline breaks and beats. This CD is a MUST HAVE for any Crystal Method enthusiast and for anyone who enjoys a variety of music. This album has been nothing less than Supernatural, its force and influence is a Momentous event written in stone on the timeline of this genre.

Best Electronica CD Of The 20th Century.......2006-08-30

If you want the best electronic music has to offer from the 20th century then buy this cd. Every track is top notch and it is one of the rare albums out there you will listen to over and over and over and over again. I'm not a big fan of their new material but VEGAS is a work of pure genius. Very few people of any genre right a album of this caliber in their lifetimes & at it's very least it is the soundtrack to the late 90's.

An album even the technophobic couldn't ignore, The Fat of the Land made Prodigy one of the first U.K. rave acts to infiltrate pop culture. Hard-core hip-hop-derived breakbeats, layers of unabashed (but creative) sampling, and meaningless shouted lyrics struck a chord beyond the electronic-music community. The inclusion of "Firestarter" and "Breathe" (both previously released hit singles) certainly aided the disc's widespread success, but it was the ferocity (and controversy) of "Smack My Bitch Up" that caught the world's attention. Guest Shahin Bada's Indian vocalizations convey the sense that dance music has come a long way from "Pump Up the Volume"! "Diesel Power," featuring Kool Keith, and "Funky Shit" set a wicked groove; the cover of L7's "Fuel My Fire" recalls the energy of the Sex Pistols. In fact, the dark aggression of The Fat of the Land bears closer resemblance to both rap and punk than the hedonism of techno. This album, like the crab on the cover, is mean and huge, with a bunch of no-__________ attitude. (that is a really cool cover).

Granted, I took off some points because this isn't perfect, and it won't catch you right always, but it is good, and if you are in the mood, you will sit through it quite easy. Even though it's definitly not an easy listen and won't always grab you (it's a mood thing), when you hit it, it hits big.

Every song on here does it's job, some songs are better than others, (I don't care too much for Fuel My Fire as much as the others), but it is damn _________ creative. And this album always seems to go up to your _________ face and scream out loud the name of the music. IT's another great electronic album, and best of all, it dosen't sound like totally generic ______ like Crazy Frog. It's intense, intense for electronic at least, not as much as some, but electronic music should be that way sometimes. Less (or none at all) words means you have to be more creative with the music, (there's more voices on Fat Of The Land than some electronic music), and that's what real electronic music is ________ all about.

More on the music. I should give you that the music isn't not punk, but a mix. Yeah, mixes are ________headaches, why group so many _______ genres? But it works here, and the music is big beat, electronic dance rave type music, with some rap hip-hop music. No, you won't find any poppy songs, this isn't poppy electronic music. It's the opposite, so you probally won't be too interested the very first time you listen.
It ain't exactly radio friendly music, at least in the U.S. (U.K. is where this kind of stuff is more possible, such as Fatboy Slim).

I wish I could give it nine, because I am having a blast, but I don't think it's quite at the mark, so it dosen't deserve it. But take my word, The Fat Of The Land is awesome. I can't wait to dive into the underground of electronic, but yeah, I'm not really there yet, but for the underground of electronic, you gotta know the big names first.

Hear It........2007-06-14

Very few times i think in my head "I'm gonna love this" just by hearing the first 10 min. of a set; but a little of these few times i say,"I really love it" in the last 10 min. of it. With this release It happened.
Incredibly there's more than one style of house music in this one, but it still sounded like a whole (You would say this is the job of any dj, but it doesn't always happens this way). The upgrades made to the tracks and layered sounds fit flawlessly. For the sake of your electronic Knowledge. Don't Think it, just hear it.

Hottest House mix of the year!.......2007-04-25

The quality Australian EQ label has released their 11th in the Balance series, and it may very well be the best yet. It is certainly the most consistent line-up of tracks through both discs. Luke starts off with a few progressive house tracks early on, then takes us on a groovy journey through deep house on disc 1, and into some higher energy electro vibes for disc 2. There isn't a dull moment on either disc, even from the first listen. No warming up, no second listen to enjoy, this one hits you right from the start. Amazing melodic tracks on both discs, this is a true house gem. A must own mix this year.

Funk.... groove... soul... House..........2007-04-24

"Balance" keeps its musical see-saw at equilibrium with equal doses of quality progressive trance and progressive house. The better of the trancey Balance acts include James Holden and Anthony Pappa; Luke Fair, however, places precisely the correct amount of weight on the other side of the proverbial see-saw, creating a thumping house music journey whose merits outshine even the likes of Desyn Masiello's Balance 008. In fact, words from the man himself speak volumes: "Hey all...finished my Balance CD last week. The mood of this mix will capture the sound of an entire night at a club, a full set from open to close. Every track will be heavily edited to personalize the mix a bit more, with lots of layering to make the whole thing as colorful as possible." ~Luke Fair

He could not have preached a truth more profound had his hand been on a Bible when he made the statement.

This is the most colorful house release I have heard in quite a while; possibly ever. Disc one begins with sensible track sequences like Voom Voom's "Vampire Song," Rich Medina Feat. Sy Smith's "Can't Hold Back (King Britt Mix)" & Bioground's "Smooth Summer Nights"; with this three-song-sequence, I found what is rare in most EDM sets -the instantaneous feeling that the mix is liable to outshine others of its kind with ease. Luke Fair spins an airy, funky and wholly danceable first set with the delectable influence of jazz. Sounding nothing like his "electro-disco fiasco" on OS_3, the aura brings to mind images of radiant multi-colored disco balls spinning from the ceiling of a vibrant night club. Though the whole first disc is enticingly consistent, Luke seems to have developed a knack for inserting absolutely perfect three-track sequences which segue into different styles of house, while still maintaining the mix's deep and saturated color. Further examples are found in Julien Jabre's "War," Tiger Stripes' "Amphytrion" & Kinka's "Burnin'." The mood thus far has been so consistently uplifting and beat-reliant that this section of tracks was a surprise... a pleasant one, because the last section of disc one contains arguably the best selection of tracks on the first disc. To cite examples, David Holmes' "69 Police" and Heroes for Hire's "Our House Music" shine like sapphire gems. My favorite track on the disc is the sixteenth track, "Gateway" by Nightriders, whose shimmering saxophone chords bring undeserved pleasure to my ears. Closing with Tom Novy's "Unexpected" (a fitting title, for this track deviates from the melody set forth by Nightriders in many ways), I cannot help but suggest that disc one of Balance 011 achieves the status of the most addictive and most superb house album I have ever heard.

That is not to say that disc two bears no merit by comparison. On the contrary, it should be argued that the second disc is just as good as the first; such a statement may be too bold in lieu of the first disc's astonishing composition, though. The second disc ups the ante with a sense of housey "grittiness," which is in sync with Luke Fair's personal description of the album: "The mood of this mix will capture the sound of an entire night at a club, a full set from open to close." Beginning with the same eerie and sexy bass grooves as did "Vampire Song", "She's Worth It" slyly breaks through the initial ambient barriers into infectiously throbbing house. Luke finally nails the electro-house vibe he went for with earlier releases that ended up falling short when the adds Francois K.'s "Time and Space." Undulating synthesizers ensnare the headspace of the listener; by the second track of disc two, there simply is no going back, folks.

The drop of Timewriter's "Booty Song" illustrates the late-night club atmosphere being fully realized. The liveliest moments of disc two can be found between tracks four and twelve; some particular highlights include "Playing with Fire," "DJ's In a Row," "Footlover" by Lissat & Voltax, yet another astounding 16 Bit Lolitas track "Difficult If Not Impossible," and finally Klement Bonelli's "Ethna (12th Floor Mix)." And with such a provocative title, one would expect Marnix's "FIRE!" to continue the uptempo set forth by so many of the mid-disc tracks; in actuality, it marks the beginning of the slide into downtempo and piano layered tracks suitable for catching one's breath after such an intense ride into previously unexplored dimensions of house grandeur. "Need To Know"'s wailing synths mourn the closure of this fantastic set; it is a jubilant mourning - the final recognition of what has transpired during this sonic journey. Humate's "Curious" is precisely that; a curiously uptempo song at first, finally relenting to the early morning hours with surprisingly articulate and enjoyable piano chords.

Within the last forty seconds, the echoic female vocals usher out the second disc of what is perhaps the liveliest, most colorful, most purposeful and most addictive progressive House release in YEARS. Luke Fair's name has arisen in other locations in the world of EDM; he commandeered the third installment of Bedrock's Original Series (a marginal success at best) and decently collaborated with Desyn Masiello on Yoshitoshi's "In House We Trust Volume 3." Even his superb live set with James Zabiela at the WMC Delta Heavy Boat Party in 2004 firmly cemented his name in the scene. In my mind, however, Balance 011 is undeniably Luke's best effort yet and will likely go down as the best house release of 2007, despite being so early into the year. To say that Luke Fair fares well would be a gross understatement. I challenge anyone to drop the headphones or mute the subwoofers in the midst of this incredible album. Perhaps the best (house) Balance release to date, Luke Fair is one disco ball doesn't stop spinning until the brilliant colors have blinded the listener with the ecstasy of genuinely sensational house music that connects the world.

If it wasn't for the revolutionary artwork, it would be easy to suspect that the Chemical Brothers were parodying their roles as electronic musicians with that album title. After all, people have accused the genre of sounding redundant for years. But while contemporaries like the Prodigy and Fatboy Slim fall by the wayside, on their fifth studio album Tom Rowlands and Ed Simons sound positively reinvigorated, as the dreamy textures of 2002's Come With Us give way to a set of sharper, more focused songs, from the politically charged "Left Right" to the wide-screen "Close Your Eyes." It's epic stuff, particularly when A Tribe Called Quest rapper Q-Tip magically appears to give lead-off track "Galvanize" a vintage hip-hop kick. But because this is as much about the future as the past, the British duo also recruits Kele Okereke of underground punk-funk stars Bloc Party and the London vocal group The Magic Numbers to help push things forward. --Aidin Vaziri

I've been a Chemical Brothers fan ever since I heard "The Sunshine Underground" from a friend of mine. Really, that was the only song of theirs I owned and had every listened to until I got curious about the Budweiser Select commercial. After a quick google search, I was floored that the artists who wrote the song on the commercial that I was groovin' to were the Chemical Brothers, which led me to check out the CD and make the purchase as soon as possible. Note: the sample song previews on Amazon do not do the songs justice, the tracks on the CD soar above and beyond what any clip could provide. The Chemical Brothers' effort on this CD pays off with true works of art. They have such thick, lush layers of percussion creating something new to listen to almost every time you listen to a song while still relating everything to the pulsing bass which defines their music. The pieces on this CD are extremely busy in a very good way, and I have kept this CD within easy reach since I bought it half a year ago. These are genre-bending artists, and this CD is a wonderful purchase.

The urgent political message from Anwar Superstar on Left Right is the cornerstone to this ambitious project from The Chemical Brothers.

Galvanize is a classic merging of pop sensibilities with an infectious, signature rhythm. Boxer is pure 1970s funk, but the sonic overload of Come Inside & The Big Jump - the layers of sounds merge into a clubland tour-de-force - demonstrates how an ambitious electronic vision can be accomplished in the studio.

Believe & Hold Tight London pack solid grooves, while Surface To Air would arguably be the top choice on a CD not packed with so many solid cuts.

But it's Left Right that propels Push The Button. If you have any concern at all with the perverse drama of the world stage, the song will make you sit down & think. And that means The Chemical Brothers ultimately did push the right button.

This was worth the wait. Their follow-up to the slammin' Come With Us, has that same Chemical Brothers' sound, without being formulaic or stale.
I've been a fan for years and am always pleased with their offerings.
I've turned some of my younger professors on to the Chems as music to code to. Launch your developer, pop in the CD, or launch iTunes and code on.
This has almost replaced Surrender as my favorite Chemical Brothers' album.

To remain relevant after a decade in the music industry is rare indeed; for a dance act, it's virtually unique. Singles 93-03 ably demonstrates how the Chemical Brothers have managed it. Having first carved a reputation as DJs the Dust Brothers in the early 1990s, the two history graduates narrowly avoided calling themselves the London Dust Explosion before spearheading big beat, becoming a huge live draw, collaborating with Noel Gallagher and having Glastonbury Festival founder Michael Eavis play "Hey Boy, Hey Girl" at his wedding. It's been 10 years of fun, frolics, and gigantean left-field beats for Ed Simmons and Tom Rowland and, as this faultless singles collection testifies, continual reinvention.

From the seething siren, pounding breaks, breathy vocals and spellbinding post-acid electronica of album opener "Song to the Siren" to the ingenious collaboration with the Flaming Lips, "The Golden Path," Tom 'n' Ed have somehow managed to carve tracks that appeal equally to radio, clubs, and the live arena. Alongside the cement-cracking bass of "Leave Home" and "Block Rockin' Beats" comes the high-inducing sonic debauchery of "The Private Psychedelic Reel" and dancefloor filler "Star Guitar," to name but a few of the many highlights. Prime Compilation.......2006-07-13

A great starting point for anyone looking to discover the Chemical Brothers. Nearly all tracks succeed at rounding out this retrospective of the Brothers' body of work from the 90s. The one or two that do not reach the energy or wow of the remaining cuts do so marginally at most, and bear in mind this is my subjective take. Still this is a great compilation; after listening to this stellar package, the CB's "Push the Button" is that much more enjoyable.

More than Just a Dance Band.......2005-09-24

Sure, these guys have pumped out many a dance floor filler. This collection of incredible singles is an undeniable testament to that. Buy this one for the singles, and the extra disc of rare-ish material. Then prepare to fall in love with Chemical Brothers, one of the most brilliant duos in popular music. Hopefully this "Best Of" will only be a jumping off point for the curious. Digging a little deeper into their albums you will find bits of heady psychedelia, rushes of shimmering electronica, tough slabs of hip hop, moody ballds, guest vocalists galore, and more than just a few curveballs thrown your way.

Ok. The songs included in this compilation are the most know ones. The unmissable ones. What I liked a lot about this album was that they sort of made special edits to the song, which doesn't meant they cut parts or something. I loved how they selected them and put them together. It is perfect. Plus, this singles collection has 2 new tracks: The Golden Path (can be funny and beautiful at the same time) and Get Yourself High (a very distorted and electric hiphop-like song). The real reason why I got this Cd was because of the bonus album. It has 2 live tracks (so incredible because they are amazing and very original when they go live), some unreleased tunes and mixes, and includes other tracks that were singles. It's a wonderful tracklisting. If you have liked what the Chems have done in the past, you're gonna be happy with this cd, just like me. I am a fan, and I'm satisfied with this singles album.

I'd never heard of the Chemical Brothers.......2004-10-20

A friend recounted that he was searching through the personals one day when he came across the ad of a woman who claimed to be a Chemical Bros. fan. He was thrilled and I was mystified -- who are the Chemical Brothers?

And now it's love.

For casual listeners of electronica/dance music, there is plenty in this compilation to make it worth the price. Star Guitar is the kind of music you want to play when you're racing down a dark highway on your way into the city, Get Yourself High is head-bop fantastic and both Loops of Fury and Chemical Beats sounds like they should have made it onto a Matrix soundtrack.

In short, this is a great compilation for the Johnny-come-lately Chemical Brothers fan.

The seventh installment in the House of Om series features the heavyweight turntable techniques of DJ Mark Farina, who returns to his San Francisco roots eight years after having put West Coast house on the map with the much acclaimed San Francisco Sessions. Farina's style is as hard to pin down as the globetrotting DJ himself, and this mix is no exception. It starts out on a deeper note, with an obscure a cappella that is signature Farina, moving quickly into some uptempo numbers that get the head nodding and the feet shuffling. The mix really lets loose with tracks from Check Diesel, Vibezselect, and the Littelmen before moving into warm, laid-back grooves to bring it home. It progresses nicely, a few dead spots (like the Kerry Chandler track) notwithstanding. Keep on movin in the mix.......2007-07-20

This cd gets five stars not only because it is great jackin house but because Mark Farina himself put it together. Anything this man puts together becomes a masterpiece. Mark still remains one of the true house djs that does not deviate from the path of hosue with cheesy electro bass or poppy chart music. His remixes are so original he makes Paul Oakenfold look like a wedding singer. Some of the very good tracks you'll here him play on tour is the very acclaimed jackin track "whats the time" by Littlemen, "Bleu" by King Kooba, and "Come chill" by vibezelect. In his jazzy phase Mark unleashes "garys groove" which is becoming loved by the like of Dj Heather, Diz, and Dj Sneak. Also look for the very subtle sax riff in Skeleton keys (not even released by the artist yet but you know they gave a copy to Mark). In any case if your a mark fan then you must have this cd to add the compilation you probably already started. Enjoy

Yep yep....Mark Farina did it again....simply blowing my mind away with another house mix that will definately keep you moving. A little more uptempo than normal Farina mixes but never the less....outstanding. It just keeps building up to a state where you find yourself just bobbing your head to the funky deep house that made Mark Farina who he is today. Don't hesitate....add this to your collection!!

Waxing Deep Records is pleased to announce the first ever compilation of Cuban funk: Si, Para Usted: The Funky Beats of Revolutionary Cuba, Volume One. An unprecedented combination of socialism and artistic freedom flourished during the mid-years of Castro's Cuba, enabling musicians to create an innovative body of music based on traditional styles like those made famous by the Buena Vista Social Club. Si, Para Usted captures the spirit of this time. The music ranges from son, beat, jazz, and funk, and abounds with psychedelic influences, electronic experimentation, and a heavy dose of soul. Communist funk may seem unlikely, but here it is. Si, Para Usted was lovingly compiled by Dan Zacks of Waxing Deep Radio in response to massive listener demand for the Cuban music played on the show. Outside of the Waxing Deep archive, the bulk of funky Cuban music is virtually unobtainable. Cuban recordings were never widely distributed and few have been reissued. Utterly committed to sharing good music, Dan took it upon himself to make these fantastic tracks more widely accessible. Almost all of the tracks were re-mastered from the original tapes kept by the Cuban government in a dusty Havana warehouse. Given the poor quality of Cuban vinyl, this means the music on Si, Para Usted has a quality of sound previously unavailable. Quite simply, the music has never sounded this good.
