5 out of 5 stars A good value.......2007-05-17

I wasn't expecting to have 4 discs for this price, and the music is a quality selection of film music, giving a good scope of the genre, and a very listenable transfer.

4 out of 5 stars The Sound Track Since Bernard Hermann.......2006-07-25

This collection is bound to capture your heart and evoke a tin ear on successive tracks. I found much to like and some duds - easy to skip over.
Very good value.

4 out of 5 stars Good mix of film music.......2006-07-02

Good mix of films!
I'm a big fan of this soundtrack music and will be looking for more CD's like this.

4 out of 5 stars A mixed collection of movie music.......2006-02-23

For the price, this CD is a great bargain. The musical selections, as you might expect, are mixed in quality ranging from extraordinary to so so, the balance being worthwhile and interesting. Sonically the CD is excellent.

5 out of 5 stars Uplifts your soul, takes your mind into the heavens.......2006-01-06

I have been listening to great scores for many years and this collection is truly inspirational in so far as the choice of different scores takes you on a journey of listening pleasure matched by only a few collections. The price is incredibly reasonable for hours of listening pleasure. Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars You always will hear a waltz from Richard Rodgers.......2007-01-13

An example of Rodgers trying to fit in a new contributor of lyrics, but the match wasn't there, yet even so, his melodic mastery shone through.

5 out of 5 stars Much better than it's reputation........2006-11-02

Despite being considered a flop by it's creative team, this is the one of Sondheim's "lyrics only" musicals I return to most often. It's melancholy charm is underlined by Rodgers' highly hummable tunes combined with Sondheim's reluctant lyrics. They are partly bitter and partly forced "happy". I love it.

4 out of 5 stars An unappreciated score by a fine cast.......2004-02-04

Even though the show was not a success and the authors have all taken their turns at trashing it, this recording makes a strong case for DO I HEAR A WALTZ.

It's another fine record production by Goddard Lieberson. Rodgers (who was from all reports drinking and quite nasty to his collaborators) came up with many of his trademark melodies and the title song won deserved popularity outside of the show. Sondheim for his part creates some crackling good lyrics ("Someone Woke Up"; "What Do We Do We Fly!") but its an odd score... you hear the romantic older style love songs from Rodgers with fairly basic (dare we say dull) lyrics then some wonderful lyrics set to atypical Rodgers tunes. Then suddenly it all comes together in the final few numbers: The Title Song, "Perfectly Lovely Couple" and "Thank You So Much." Maybe it's a show that Encores will revive someday. In the meantime we can appreciate this original cast album and thank Sony for releasing it on Cd with good notes and a synopsis in the booklet!

4 out of 5 stars "Someone Woke Up.....".......2003-10-04

So begins the delightful DO I HEAR A WALTZ?, one of Richard Rodgers' most accomplished post-Hammerstein scores. Not since his days with Lorenz Hart had Rodgers written such an energetic, youthful and joyful score. Stephen Sondheim's lyrics are witty and wonderful. DO I HEAR A WALTZ? received a lukewarm response from critics and audiences, lasting only 220 performances at the 46th Street Theatre.

Based on Arthur Laurents' play THE TIME OF THE CUCKOO (which turned into the film SUMMERTIME starring Katharine Hepburn), the story concerns a teacher, Leona Samish (played by Elizabeth Allen), who's holiday in Venice is dominated by her romance with the handsome Renato di Rossi (played by Sergio Franchi). There are also a host of colorful supporting characters including the ebullient hotelier Signora Fioria (Carol Bruce - SARATOGA).

The score is delicious with the opening number perfectly setting up the scene ("Someone Woke Up"), to Fioria's big number "This Week Americans", and the 11 o'clock number "Stay". There's also the Title Song, sung for all its worth by the delicious belt of Elizabeth Allen.

For all the problems that plagued the musical during its inception, nothing shows on the sparkling cast album, where it sounds like the biggest hit of the season. For Broadway fans, this CD is a must-own.

5 out of 5 stars You MUST hear a 'Waltz'!.......2003-06-16

Please, give this a chance. Forget what you've read and just sit and listen. Read the libretto, available at lots of libraries, or read "Time of the Cuckoo" which Arthur Laurents based "Waltz" on. The combo of Rodgers and Sondheim is always sneered at--maybe, like me, you will see that Rodgers romanticism and Sondheim's sort of optimistic realism are actually the perfect mismatch for the endearingly troubled characters in the play.

Mr.Producer, forget all the basicstage gossip and let the score sell the show for you. Audiences, demand your favorite companies mount a production!

Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra here offer a veritable tour of the swing era. Kunzel has been conducting the orchestra since its formation in 1977. The set includes many of swing's cornerstone numbers, of course including Duke Ellington's "It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing)," which is also celebrated as the source of the genre's name. The music flourished in the '30s and '40s, popularized by composers and bandleaders such as Count Basie, Glenn Miller, and the Dorsey brothers. To help realize this project, a number of vocalists were enlisted, all of whom have current resumes rich with forays into the swing era: the Manhattan Transfer, John Pizzarelli, and Janis Siegel (who's also a member of the aforementioned vocal quartet). From soaring group vocals on such numbers as "Skyliner" to straight-ahead instrumental grooves as on Benny Goodman and Lionel Hampton's "Flying Home," this 14-song set celebrates the swing era by making it sound fresh today. --David Greenberger

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Disappointing Vocals.......2003-08-21

The orchestral approach to swing used on this recording unfortunately makes this date sound anemic. The swing band sound that is in integral part of this song list is either missing or meagerly represented among the orchestral arrangements and the hollow sounding concert hall acoustics. Worst of all, the Manhattan Transfer are mixed down so far that they almost sound like they don't get their own mikes. For anyone who loves MT as much as I do, this recording is a sadly wasted opportunity. Very disappointing. They deserve so much better.

5 out of 5 stars A very nice SACD.......2004-06-09

This is a very enjoyable album. The sound quality is absolutely amazing! The first time I heard the clarinet solo on track #2, my jaw dropped at the amazing sound quality.

The soloists on the album include John Pizzareli, and the Manhattan Transfer. They are great musicians that bring a bit of variety to this album.

There is only one bad thing that I could say about this album is pretty minor. The hybrid SACD is supposed to be able to play on all CD players. I have had problems playing this on regular CD players.

4 out of 5 stars vintage Hugh Martin score a complete delight.......2004-12-23

LOVE FROM JUDY, based on Jean Webster's novel 'Daddy Long Legs', is pure vintage Hugh Martin. The show never made it to Broadway, instead enjoying a sold-out London season and an extensive provincial tour.

Jean Carson played Jerusha Abbott, an orphan at the John Grier Home who is mysteriously supported by a never-named benefactor. June Whitfield, Johnny Brandon, Adelaide Hall and Bill O'Connor round out the strong leading cast. Barbara Windsor played one of the orphans (for some interesting backstage reminisces about LOVE FROM JUDY check out Barbara Windsor's autobiography 'All of Me').

The Hugh Martin-Jack Gray score is quite lovely from what is featured on this disc (the recordings were originally designed to fit 4 sides of a set of 78's). LOVE FROM JUDY runs a scant 20 minutes, so the disc has been filled out with extensive bonus material.

We get Jean Carson singing "A Kiss to Build a Dream On", "Hug Me a Hug" and "Barrels and Barrels of Roses" (on the 2 former tracks she's joined by her then-husband Bill Lowe); Johnny Brandon singing 5 numbers including his mega-hit "Glow Worm"; and Adelaide Hall singing 2 great numbers. June Whitfield sings 5 numbers including two songs from GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES!

There are also selections from the Frank Loesser score of HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSEN; and a full-cast presentation of numbers from Disney's PETER PAN (both feature Jean Carson and Johnny Brandon).

5 out of 5 stars great .......2007-06-11

I am a Leary fan but I believe I would like this cd even if I were not a fan.Mary Poppins said this a spoonful of sugar makes the medicine go down. Well Leary has a message that might be hard for some to understand or even to tolerate but this will help make his message more likeable weather or not you agree with him. I am not nor have I ever been an lsd user but the things on this cd make sense to me.

1 out of 5 stars the funniest CD I own!.......2003-01-11

This CD is total garbage but it's quite amusing as a novelty item. Imagine if you will, Timothy Leary muttering his incoherent psycho-babble & bad poetry over cheesy heavy metal guitar riffs. This CD is good as a novelty item & conversation piece but is easily the worst CD I own. No, I didn't buy it, I acquired it & will treasure it forever!!! (haha)

5 out of 5 stars Astonishing and Surprisingly.......2001-11-24

A friend of mine played this album for me without telling or giving me any clue about who was behind it. It didn't take too long though to recognize Tim Leary's voice, which made me even more surprised. It starts with an incredible song - No Regrets - which tell us more about Tim's life than most biography written about the man. Well folks, be prepared. This is only the first track. "Ripped Van Winkle", "Rock & Roll Hollywood" and "Drive By Love" would make most hard rockers pale and embarassed. The connection between Tim and Simon Strokes is anything but perfect. "100 Naked Kangaroos..." could only be written by Tim, starting from the title itself. "Global Village" is poignant. It says "jump abord, let's take a ride. The freedom train has just arrived" What else is there to say. Great guitar solo too. It closes with another great one which says a lot about aspects of Tim's life and death. The album rocks all the way. You just can't skip any track. In the end Tim asks: "Is that too far out?" No Tim. Not for us, who are always about to rock and live the high time. Get it. You won't regret it.

For those of you that don't know, this is Big Sandy before he added steel guitar and they became the Fly Rite Boys. "Fly Rite With..." is a great collection of swingin' rockabilly as well as some mellower strummers. "Missouri Gal" is one of the finest Big Sandy songs, period. If you're a fan of Big Sandy, you won't be disappointed.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars wait a day before..........2003-02-26

Listening to this cd, watch the film...enjoy it then when doing something like tidying your room, slap it on. You'll find-and i can guarentee this-that during a certain song reprisal, you'll stop and tears will come to your eyes and you'll wish you were a child again. That song is of course 'You Can Fly', it makes my cry, escpecially what happened to Bobby Driscoll.

5 out of 5 stars You Can Fly!.......2002-10-23

As a lover of Peter Pan, this CD was a wonderful addition to my collection. The songs are just wonderufl, and the instrumental music is great to hear when you've seen the movie, or even when you haven't! For anyone who is still yearning to let out their inner child, this is the CD for you!

5 out of 5 stars Simply magical.......2002-10-11

Watch the movie and then buy this CD. You'll know what I mean.
It is good for the health to be young at heart.
