Kicks Out Some Serious Jams.......2005-08-08
The tunes on "Afrodisiac" are the older ones on here, they date back to just before 1971 when both of these albums were apparently recorded. The two on Side 1 are probably (I won't pretend I'm any type of authority on Fela - I'm just a beginner at this point) fairly typical of his early "Afrobeat" sound. They stay on the same chords and generate a boatload of tribal rhythmic intensity. Well-recorded, nothing wrong with them at all, good but not great music. But then the two tracks on Side 2 - holy cow! James Brown in space on amphetamine or something like that. Absolutely great, intense, imaginitive stuff.
"Open and Close"'s 3 tracks are of a similar level of quality and imagination (and intensity). Track 2 is the most amazing of the three; when Fela got those horns going on creative lines, there's nothing quite like his band. This probably is a good place to start investigating Fela's music. It's an extremly fine collection of music, and the sound on this reissue is clear and strong and beautiful.
Fela Kuti lets the good times roll.......2003-02-27
Open & Close/ Afrodisiac comes very close to shaking your butt for you! The instrumentation is tight, and the sub-tempos, which are noticable in most of the songs, create a very "busy" sound without being washed out or hyper. Percussion throughout is very African influenced, and the horns add a swinging latin/big band sound. While the bass riffs and muted guitar can get a bit repetitious, the overall music keeps the listener quite interested for the duration of the often 12 minute-plus songs. A must for anyone that appreciates great "get together" music. Take it to your next one; your friends will be happy you put it on, and you'll have the pleasure of taking the real party home at the end of the night! Go, Fela! GO!
Glad to see a new reissue of this material.......2001-11-16
I first heard the track "Open and Close" on WKCR (NYC/Columbia U.) on their late night soul, funk, and afro-beat program Night Train. I was just getting into Fela, and I was completely blown away by this particular track, which I still think contains some of Fela's best vocal work. Unfortunately, the album of the same name was only available on a fairly rare import reissue.
Now Open and Close appears together with the enormously funky album Afrodisiac (I don't remember what it formerly appeared with), and the pairing combines to make what is probably my favorite Fela disc. The horns are bright and fiery, the grooves are tight, and they range from super fast funk to molasses-slow grinds. When Amazon finally gets around to making an "Essential Fela" list (it's about time!), I recommend they include this.
The Sound of Revolt.......2001-11-15
Nigerian Genius fleshing out his extravegance. Bass-laden soul music, flaring horns, a wild Jimmie Smith-like organ, and protest lyrics satirizing Nigerian oppression, militarism, and the ignorance of the 'civilized.' A must for all.

After a breakup, childbirth, and a reality show, the one-time teen star finds herself growing up a little more on Afrodisiac. While this isn't a concept album--the songs aren't ordered as such--it's filled with the frustrations and pleasures of Brandy's past few years. At the same time, her vocals are richer than ever, reaching a Blige-like level of expression on "I Tried" and "Who is She 2 U." Timbaland's production on nine cuts anchors the disc; he even makes the title track's sampled baby, a link to his classic work on Aaliyah's "Are You That Somebody," belong. The biggest triumph, though, is "Talk About Our Love," pop-soul from Kanye West that could come straight from the summer of '74, even including his rap. Further release comes with Timba's "Sadiddy," an anthemic celebration of being out on the town with a carload of friends. The girl may be older, but she still knows how to have fun. --Rickey Wright
Album Description
Afrodisiac is sensuous, soulful, even a little gritty, an album that showcases Brandy's passionate voice and announces in no uncertain terms that she's all grown up and knows what she wants. The hot first single, "Talk About Our Love," was produced by and features Kanye West.

Change of Heart.......2007-03-06
When I heard this CD when it was first released, I felt that it was a huge disappointment. The only song I really liked was Turn It Up, but I have since had a change of heart and added this to my collection. After giving it another listen (well, a few more listens actually), I have found that it's a decent effort by Ms. Norwood. Some of the lyrics are still really silly..."everything he eats I cook," "have 3 or 4 kids by you and some more if you ask me to." And Sadiddy, that album filler she so desperately doesn't want to have, is just that. Otherwise, I'll give it a C for Afrodisiac, Should I Go, Turn It Up, Who Is She To You, Cool, Focus, and Where You Wanna Be. I wonder now with all of the controversy surrounding her whether Ms. N is still wondering if she should go or should she be looking for another record deal. Never Say Never is still her best effort. Brandy is #2, Full Moon #3 and this would be my least favorite.
A good CD that was Underrated!!.......2007-02-25
This was one of Brandy's best albums and was seriously not promoted correctly. There were a number of tracks that could've been released as singles and I think the controversy of her "so-called failed marriage" and her ex going on the air on Wendy Williams dishing the dirt on Brandy really effected sales. But for the real Brandy fans, they will not be disappointed. Even though she strayed away from long-time producer Rodney Jerkins, Timbaland picked up the slack and took her a long way and gave her some bangin' tracks. The best tracks are "Afrodisiac", "How I Feel", "Say You Will", "Thought It Would Be". Some tracks that you could skip over would be "Sadiddy" and "Turn It Up" otherwise this album gets a thumbs up. Can't wait for your next album
Won't be let down.......2006-11-23
This gal knows how to pic her songs and make the most of her voice. This album showcases some of the hottest new beats as well as her silky smooth voice. You won't be let down by any of the songs on this cd. She has great smooth, love songs as well as slamming dance tracks by producers who know how to make catchy music.
Entertaining CD!!!!.......2006-10-19
I just joined Columbia house and got this album from there. It gets 5/5 because I can listen to it from start to finish without feeling the urge to skip songs. My favorite tracks are Afrodisiac, Who is she to you?, Talk about our love feat kanye west, I tried, Focus, Sadiddy, Turn it up (club banger), Come As You Are, Finally and Should I go. That's most of the tracks on the CD. My overall favorite song is Finally.
'Where you wanna be' sounds like a song from puff daddy and the family's no way out album - TI raps on this one and his rap is tight. 'Should I go' is cool because she is contemplating her place in the current music industry. The beats are sick. The Timbaland-produced tracks are blazing. This album is 100% entertaining and Brandy's voice sounds great.
Definitely The Best Album Of Her Career! One Of Timbaland's Best As Well!.......2006-10-07
After listening to "Afrodisiac", singer/actor Brandy's 4th studio effort, I can't help feeling sorry for her. This is one of many stellar R&B CDs that commercially make it nowhere due to lack of promotion or just flat-out neglect on most of the public's part. "Afrodisiac" is more than just an artistic statement - it is the sound of a maturer, stronger, vocally more powerful and emotional Brandy taking risks with her music while still remaining real with it. Once again, reigning super-producer Timbaland is the main person to thank for delivering with the production on 9 of the album's 15 tracks. Other producers include Kanye West, Organized Noise & others. Sean Garrett's pensive genius also blesses this record with spectacular results.
While Brandy may have only lent her actual helping hand to one of the album's 15 tracks in terms of songwriting, Brandy not only sings the material with a lived-in feel, but the material itself was obviously related to her in the 1st place. "Who I Am" is an emotional ballad where Brandy finds strength after a bad relationship with lyrics equally compelling as her actual voice. Album track favourite "I Tried" is a heavy-hearted ballad where heavy synthesizers, faint guitar strings & closing violins emphasize Brandy's emotional struggle with an unfaithful lover whose misdeeds she tries to neglect, but in the end, refuses to put up with (in other words, she eventually leaves). "Finally" is a ballad that, while lighter with the production, is equally passionate and emotional with the same purpose of making the right decisions & leaving a bad relationship. "Come As You Are" uses more revealing lyrics, Brandy's vulnerable vocals, Timbaland's bouncy production and breathy background vocals to create a song about her rough transition into womanhood, and how she searches for a man who's equally mature.
Considering how deep every track on this album is, highlights come down more to one's opinion on each track's quality. In this case, many of those highlights go to the actual singles. Lead single "Talk About Our Love" is a beautiful, slightly up-tempo ballad with a lush groove, courtesy of guest artist Kanye West. The song itself talks about not worrying about the gossip and rumours other people say about them, and to just keep on showing love to each other, despite everyone else's perceptions of it. Second single "Who Is She 2 U" is another slightly up-tempo ballad where Brandy begins to frustratingly question her man's intentions with another woman who caught his eye. Piano keys, flutes, violins strings, ethereal choir background vocals and catchy drum patterns provide a perfect sonic backdrop for Brandy's sultry vocals & the expectedly impressive lyrics. Timbaland's killer minimalist beat on the title track (which samples from Aaliyah's "Are You That Somebody") is equally infectious, while Brandy professes her drug-like love for another man with breathy sexuality. Other non-single highlights include the emotionally furious club banger "Saddity" and "Should I Go", a stellar ballad where Brandy contemplates all kinds of things -whether or not to leave the industry for her family, remembering the days when it just her, Monica & Aaliyah, etc.- with pensive lyrics & airy vocals over a well-chosen sample of Coldplay's song "Clocks".
Altogether, "Afrodisiac" is a wonderful studio effort that deserved more attention and success than it received. To this date, "Afrodisiac" remains the best album of her career, and is a testament to both her artistry and longevity in an endlessly fickle music industry. 5 stars!

Top 10.......2005-01-10
This cd is one of my top ten favorites. It sets the mood. It's a shame that singers today won't take time out to write and sing great music like that. Music today all sounds alike to me. A great Valentine gift for someone you love.
Something 'Bout Love..........2000-08-30
The Main Ingredient was a very rare find among groups that came along during the late sixties. They wrote and produced their own songs, thanks to the leadership of Don McPherson, the group's original lead singer. Following McPherson's untimely death, the remaining members of the group, Tony Silvester and Luther Simmons, had to somehow regroup. They are from Harlem, and they reached back into the old neighborhood to tab a replacement: Cuba Gooding. The new lineup continued to produce itself, and Bert DeCoteaux and Rene Hall continued to work on the arrangements. Replacing a songwriter as prolific and talented as McPherson was a little much to ask, so the group turned to outside writers. The first result for the new team was an out-the-box smash: the "Bittersweet" album (1972), with its gold single, "Everybody Plays The Fool." It was the kind of song that gives a group credibility and respectability, hitting #2 R&B and #3 pop. Further pop success would come in 1974 with the album "Euphrates River" and its runaway smash single, "Just Don't Want To Be Lonely." But between those two lps came this 1973 effort, which is easily the best loved of all the group's albums. This one was not about record sales. It was about setting a mood for romantic times. It was about celebrating womanhood (especially Black womanhood, as the risque album jacket aptly demonstrated). It was about establishing Cuba Gooding as a fan favorite, who wouldn't need hits, in order to sell records. This disc was definitely something else: It was Something 'Bout Love. A key to this album's popularity was the decision to recognize a great talent, whose star was about to light up the pop heavens: Stevie Wonder. Six of Stevie's songs (out of 10) were featured on "Afrodisiac." When you listen to the maturity of the sound; the lushness of the arrangements, and the flawlessness of the group's harmonies, it's hard to believe this is only the second album for the new lineup. Smokey Robinson named a whole genre with his landmark "Quiet Storm" album of 1975. This album pre-dates that one by two years, and one can make a strong case that "Afrodisiac" was the first album in the Quiet Storm style. As so aptly put in the liner notes, "The best thing that could ever happen to a love song, is to have it sung by The Main Ingredient." After the "Euphrates River" album, the group was hurt by lineup changes and changing consumer tastes. Tony left to try his hand at producing ("Supernatural Thing" for Ben E. King), and later formed a group he called "The New Ingredient." Cuba left to pursue an unfruitful solo career at Motown. But the three crooners re-formed and re-signed to RCA in 1980, recording two beautiful but poor-selling albums. Cuba and Tony also recorded as a duo in 1989. Today, Cuba continues to light up stages with a flamboyant stage show, which features two pretty-much anonymous background singers, who still go by a legendary name: The Main Ingredient.
Something Lovely.......2000-05-03
This 1973 outing by Cuba Gooding, "Tony" Sylvester, and Luther Simmons Jr. is one of the best releases from the Main Ingredient and considered by many fans to be a tribute to Stevie Wonder. Arranger Bert deCoteaux wraps their tight harmonies around 5 of the CDs 10 songs covering Wonder penned tunes including "Superwoman", "Girl Blue", "Something 'Bout Love", "I Am Yours", and "Something Lovely".Cuba's lead vocals gracefully interweaving with DeCoteaux's string arrangements provides a full course meal of "quiet storm" masterpieces. The only songs which contribute uptempo rhythms is a tasteful cover of the Isley Brothers "Work To Do" and "You Can Call Me Rover."If a fan/collector of the sultry vocals offered during the 70s, this CD edition will also having you agree that it's something lovely.
It's like living back in "the day"........1999-03-13
I've been hunting high and low for AFRODISIAC on CD or even as an album, with no success. I was more than impressed and pleased to find it on Amazon.com. Grab your high heel sneakers, gaberdines and put that blue light back in the basement! This CD brings back memories that anyone from that era will treasure. Truly a jewel.
A Classic.......1998-12-27
Afrodisiac by The Main Ingredient is a well kept secret. The album is simply majestic. Go ahead, treat your ears and soul to this melodious palate. You won't regret. My personal favorite is "Girl Blue."

Instant Raging Dance Party.......2007-01-03
If you ever wanted to take a party from feet shuffling to feet stomping, this is a perfect mix. The long journey through this record is a series of mash-ups of history's most amazing afro-beat and golden-era Hip Hop. Fela singing over the beat from The Message--what could be hotter? Maybe when the horns come in. I can not recommend this enough... when the DJ was a no-show for a recent party, I threw this on and let it run.

The Veldt was a great college band of the 90's. They were regulars on the Frat. circuit in the Triangle region of North Carolina (Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill). I remember seeing them many times while at NC State. Together with the Connells and Dillon Fence, the Triangle produced some great college bands during this time.

3 for 3.......2006-07-28
Since Brandy's voice has matured, I will put her against Mary J., Monica, Faith, all other women in the same Hip-Hop/R&B category. The beats on her albums are always hitting, and the soulful ballads are deep. You gotta recognize she is going 3 for 3 now with: Never Say Never, Full Moon, and now Afrodisiac. I can listen to all her Albums from cover to cover and not grow bored to quickly.
