Another multi-gazillion-dollar Hollywood franchise, another chapter in the remarkable career of John Williams. Though he's already been responsible for scoring some of the most overwhelmingly successful film series of all time, in tackling the second installment of the Harry Potter saga, Williams once again proves why his name is held in such high regard in scoring circles. While he utilizes the themes he established in Sorcerer's Stone, Williams's restless inventiveness still manages to cast this chapter in a fresh new musical light. Since many of the cues here are action or atmospheric-oriented, and thus lacking in need for strong melodic hooks, the veteran composer's mastery of orchestral color--and no small amount of stylistic reinvention--infuses the proceedings with a sense of wholeness and a surprising maturity that's a key element in conjuring up the film's crucial suspension of disbelief. Harry Potter may be but a fictional wizard, but John Williams proves yet again he's the real thing. --Jerry McCulley

This is a must have for any REAL HP fan.....had to have it! Along w/ the other ones available :)

5 out of 5 stars Harry Potter.......2006-02-25

If you liked the movie, you will LOVE the sound track. I listen to it at work all day and the music takes you back to the wonderful sites in the movie.

Very inspiring and relaxing at the same time. I have ALL the sound tracks to ALL the movies, this one has the longest of the Harry Potter Themes ... "Harry's Wonderous World" Takes you right back into the movie.

Highly suggested for ANY Harry Potter fan, young or old.

4 out of 5 stars A Nice Improvement Over The First One.......2006-01-07

Even though I found the score for "Harry Potter And The Sorcerer's Stone" a bit disappointing, John Williams manages to outdo himself with the second Harry Potter installmemt. It's funny that William Ross is credited as arranger and conductor, but that doesn't matter: this one has made an improvement over the score of the first movie.
The prologue presents an interesting arrangement of two important Harry Potter themes (Hedwig's theme and the wondrous world music). There are two themes that are a real knockout: one is 'Fawkes The Phoenix', which is extremely magical and wonderful; and the other one is 'The Chamber Of Secrets', with its malevolent flair and mysterious mood. The theme for Gilderoy Lockhart is very entertaining, and the one for Dobby is kind of childlike at best, very nice. The action music is also a nice treat, as shown in tracks like 'The Flying Car', 'The Spiders', 'Cornish Pixies', and 'Dueling The Basilisk'.
In general, this is a fine album, with a great performance by the London Symphony Orchestra. John Williams is definitely a master of the fantastic genre, and his music for this sequel fares better than the original.

5 out of 5 stars Another Enchanting & Memorable Soundtrack by John Williams.......2005-11-01

The much-anticipated film sequel to the 2001 "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" was a delight. The 2002 film version of J.K. Rowling's second book, "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets", began with Harry (Daniel Radcliffe) actually having a real bedroom and no longer living beneath the stairs of the home belong to his Aunt Petunia (Fiona Shaw), Uncle Vernon (Richard Griffiths) and his cousin Dudley (Harry Melling). Uncle Vernon warned Harry to not make any noise or be seen while he, Petunia and Dudley entertained some very important people; but a mysterious house elf named Dobby (voice of Toby Jones) unexpectedly appeared in Harry's bedroom. Dobby warned Harry to not return to Hogwarts that year because something horrible was going to happen, but wouldn't tell Harry what it would be. He did tell Harry, however, that he was responble for taking the letters that Harry's friends Ron Weasley (Rupert Grint) and Hermione Granger (Emma Watson) had sent to him during their summer break from their first year at Hogwarts. To punish himself for revealing too much information to Harry, Dobby began to hit his head against various objects, then ran from Harry's bedroom to create havoc if Harry didn't agree to not return to Hogwarts. Harry, of course, refuses, and gets into trouble for Dobby's actions; but is rescued from the Dursley's home by Ron and two of his brothers in their father's flying car. Thus began Harry's first experience at the Weasley's home before returning to Hogwarts for his second year: a year in which many terrible things began to happen.

As John William's wonderfully enchanting and memorable music helped to set the mood for the 2001 film "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone", his modified music for the 2002 film "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets" was equally wonderful in setting its even darker mood. This was exemplified with musical arrangements such as "Knockturn Alley", "Meeting Aragog" and "Dueling The Basilisk". There were also some fun musical arrangements used such as "Gilderoy Lockhart ", "The Flying Car", "Cornish Pixies", "Reunion Of Friends" and the closing credits with the score entitled "Harry's Wondrous World". Though veteran composer John Williams did not receive an Oscar nomination for his work in "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets" as he had a year earlier for "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone", he did win the BMI Film Music Award from the BMI Film & TV Awards for this film's soundtrack.

Overall, I rate the wonderful soundtrack for the 2002 film of "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets" with a resounding 5 out of 5 stars and highly recommend it. I also highly recommend the soundtracks for the 2001 "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" and the 2004 "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban". I can't wait to hear what composer John Williams has written for the upcoming release of the 2005 film "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire".

5 out of 5 stars great no matter how you look at it.......2005-07-25

This soundtrack is beautiful and wonderful to listen to whether you've watched the movie or not. Every song has a mood of its own and will absolutely sweep you off your feet!

This cd is a great addition to any soundtrack collection not only becuase of the brilliant John Williams but becuase of the essence of the pieces. Most songs can stand alone especially Fawkes the Phoenix. It's also fascinating to listen for the themes from the first movie that are sometimes not so subtlely incorporated into the music. The character themes are also very believable and worth listening to especially if you didn't pay too close attention to the movie.

Another thing I've noticed about this soundtrack is that, unlike many others I own, this one is very easy to listen to all the way through without being bombarded with random battle themes and overdone effect songs. Really a great cd for anyone!

5 out of 5 stars Oh, the Mystical Night Rides with Loreena!.......2007-07-09

This music is great for traveling far and wide. The music is both imaginatively and intellectually stimulating. This is an album that calms me, comforts me, and soothes the depths of my soul. Loreena is such a magnificent vocalist and the music that she creates I will never forget. The "Book of Secrets" was the first album of hers that I listened to and bought. I just so happened to stumble upon a copy in a public library and checked it out because I was intrigued by the neat cover art. Well, sweet fortune drew me to her, and ever since, she has been one of my favorite artists to listen to. I would rate her among the top five I have ever heard. I thank God from bringing her to me. One day, I will surely live to travel to see her live in concert. I must do it before I die!

5 out of 5 stars Just what the other reviewers said..........2007-06-29

This is pure Loreena at her best, in my opinion. I've only listened to it twice since I received it, but I know I'll be playing it as much as time allows. Enjoy.

timeless piece of music, i will enjoy it forever. You can never get tired of hearing it.

This was the first album I heard by Loreena McKennitt and I loved it. Will buy more in the future!

5 out of 5 stars Music like no other.......2007-04-19

What I really want to say about this remarkable artist, cannot be expressed in words. Its like trying to describe the taste of a perfect mango, you have to experience it - to KNOW.

I do know that listening to Loreena and her "Highwaymen" accompanists, is like entering into another world. Her's is the music and words of our ancestors, the deeds, loves, sorrows and joys of living on this planet in another time, in the celtic spirit, carried on the wings of divine music.

She is Canadian, but she sings these verses like she's a Celtic angel, sent to us to help us remember where we came from, and how far we've traveled. Buy this or any of her works if you yearn for an escape from the present, live in another time, in a place, when we were free and owed allegience to no king, only to the heartbeat of Nature, the rhythm of existance.

Last night I put track 8, Dante's prayer, on repeat, so I could stay in the trance it invokes for a long time. Do you know what its like to be truly moved by an artist? Moved to tears, to joy, to a state of emotional surrender? Do the same with track 3, Skellig. I swear, I could feel the rocks under my old sandels, and the weariness of the journey from the rocky shores of Ireland to the fields of Romanie, stopping along the way to hear the bells - who call all to mass.

This music will make you appreciate a good set of head phones again, like the Sony MDR7502's. Find the time to hear this music, its transforming.

A Saucerful of Secrets is an uneven album that could glibly be called Pink Floyd's sophomore jinx, though it's a bit more complicated than that. The problems behind the band's second outing can be summed up in two words: Syd Barrett. Or rather, the absence thereof. The creative force behind Floyd's first distinctively baroque collection is credited with just one track here ("Jugband Blues") and the occasion marked the beginning of his decades-long withdrawal from public life, battles with mental illness, and burgeoning cult legend. What's left is essentially the first album by the "classic" Floyd lineup, though they're understandably a long way from their focused 1970s prime (as witnessed by the 11-minute title track); the dense sound and effects collages that are mere seasoning on later Floyd records are too often the whole point here. Roger Waters barely hints at his later glories on "Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun," a would-be stellar journey that's ultimately rather pedestrian. An album that seems alternately driven by a genuine experimental spirit one moment and creative panic the next. --Jerry McCulley

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The first signs of the classic Floyd sound appear.......2007-05-27

Released in 1968, this album was the first without Syd Barrett as a full member of the band (he did write and perform on Jugband Blues and played slide guitar on Remember a Day however) and also provided a major impetus for a good portion of the German experimental rock scene; influencing a number of bands including electronica giant Tangerine Dream. Although in some ways the product of a band getting used to a new lineup, I feel that this is still an excellent Pink Floyd album that has a great deal to offer any fan of progressive music.

The lineup at this point included new member (and old friend) David Gilmour (electric and acoustic guitars; vocals); Rick Wright (mellotron, piano, organ, and vocals); Roger Waters (bass guitar, vocals); Nick Mason (drums and percussion); and on Jugband Blues/Remember a Day, Syd Barrett (vocals, electric guitar; slide guitar). Although Dave was never comfortable with his vocals skills at this point, I think he does a great job, as do all of the other members including Rick and Roger. Dave was a little bemused by what his new bandmates were asking him to do with his guitar, and he found himself playing the instrument with pieces of wood, and making other odd noises. The musical influences present on this album clearly indicate that the band was entering new territory and even Rick Wright started exploring his Stockhausen influences a bit further (especially on A Saucerful of Secrets). As a side note, the band was using a quadraphonic sound setup during this early stage and surrounding their audience with the music, which was yet another nod to avant-garde electronic composers; in this instance the reference was to Edgar Varese.

Musically, this album is a bit removed from the excellent debut album, and is a little darker in mood (if that can be imagined). The album shows the band delving further into the electronic soundscapes that they would develop further over the next few years. I think that the lengthy (11'57") A Saucerful of Secrets suite is an excellent example of this and brings together avant-garde electronic experimentation, Rick Wright's "celestial" and spacey organ chords with tiny modulations, and large scale form into one place. Large scale composition is something that would develop further during the 1970s, and on this suite there is good use of dynamic range, and varying moods throughout. There is also the meditative and somewhat menacing Water's piece Set the Controls for the heart of the Sun and two nice spacey psychedelic pieces loaded with mellotron by Rick Wright including Remember a Day and my personal favorite See Saw. Corporal Clegg marks the beginning of Roger Water's increasing focus on his father's death in the war and features (I think) a few riffs on the guitar from Syd. The truly odd track on the album is Syd Barretts' Jugband blues, which is a chaotic mix of the Salvation Army Band (he told them to play whatever they felt like playing), kazoo, and his penchant for asymmetric and surreal lyrics. This would prove to be his last studio performance with the group.

All in all, A Saucerful of Secrets is regarded by many folks as a weaker sophomore effort, although I feel that this is a pretty important album that demonstrates the direction the band would head in. Highly recommended along with Piper at the Gates of Dawn (1967); More (1969); Ummagumma (1969); Atom Heart Mother (1970); and Meddle (1971).

3 out of 5 stars For Nastalgia.......2007-05-14

Pink Floyd has adapted to the times (thank goodness) leaving their older albums reminiscent of the seventies. Still a great trip down memory lane if you were into them back then.

4 out of 5 stars Good blow away tunes.......2007-03-09

My first delve into pre-Darkside Floyd. Good set of tunes to get blown away to, i.e., let your mind relax. I told my kids that you don't need drugs to get high; just listen to this. Be careful playing CD while driving.

4 out of 5 stars First steps toward the classic Floyd sound.......2007-03-09

With Syd Barrett's departure, Pink Floyd experienced a creative crisis. They had a new guitarist/vocalist in David Gilmour, but needed someone to step up in the composition department. Neither Rick Wright nor Roger Waters were skilled songwriters like Barrett. That said, this album is pretty good and has the first hints of the classic sound Pink Floyd would develop in the early 70s.

Of the 3 Waters compositions, "Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun" is by far the best -- a vaguely Middle-Eastern melody, whispered vocals by Waters, and very spacy playing by Wright and Gilmour. Live versions of this tune, as you can hear on Ummagumma or Live in Pompeii, would be much more adventurous. "Let There Be More Light" is a pretty good tune (with silly lyrics), while "Corporal Clegg" (Waters's first anti-war lyric) is annoying. Of the two Wright compositions, the nostalgic psych-pop "Remember a Day" is better; "See Saw" isn't as good, though it's not nearly as bad as some Floyd fans would have you believe. The only collaborative composition on this album, the title track, is arguably the best thing on the album. Lots of out-there collective improvisation by the band, leading to some pretty wild playing, and finally concluding with a very churchy chord progression and some choral voices. A classic -- one of their best achievements, though like "Set the Controls", live versions would be stretched much further out. Finally, the album concludes with Syd Barrett's final contribution to Floyd, "Jugband Blues". It's a much darker tune than most of his contributions to Piper and makes for an enigmatic farewell.

Saucerful of Secrets isn't as good as Piper or Floyd's early 70s albums. That said, it contains two of their most important tunes ("Saucerful", "Set the Controls") and some other enjoyable stuff. If you're exploring early Floyd, you will need to pick it up. Three and a half stars.

3 out of 5 stars Goodbye, asyd...........2007-02-28

One of their least Floydian works, the album still comes across as one of the better, semi-generic psychedelic works of that time. producing a few of their beloved early live staples. As interesting as a few of these elongated centerpiece jams were, it would pain any fan in comparison to how they became so much more on masterful concerts (portrayed with their double Ummagumma). Helping round out some of the extended lsd indulgences were a few more upbeat, in their own warped way, rockers, and more of Floyd's greatest, identity-less, hippiefests. Ultimately, the energy is merely hinted at here. Even at their compositional best, the group does not have the confidence, nor the studio proficiency to complement their hazy ambitions, and sadly the power of much impact to be found throughout the compelling half-step in a memorable career is fleeting. The bittersweet ending of Syd Barrett's drug-infested musical heart that helped start an amazing thing thankfully would give way to a new era of focus.

Amazon.com essential recording

McKennitt's recordings always have the quality of a spiritual sojourn; her songs are those of a seeker, whether she's setting Yeats, Scripture, or her own words to her compositions. It's this that attracts people to her music, and The Book of Secrets is no exception, whether it's the lazy rhythms of "Marco Polo," the sober joy of "The Mummers' Dance," the poignancy of "Skellig" or "Dante's Prayer," or the drama of Alfred Noyes's "The Highwayman." "The Highwayman" is a particularly strong effort, especially in comparison to her earlier setting of "The Lady of Shalott"; McKennitt has become much more skilled at musical narrative. This is music that can be enjoyed on many levels, from McKennitt's growing skill as a composer to the deeper questions posed by her lyrics. --Genevieve Williams

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful and haunting music.......2007-01-25

First I have to say a huge THANK YOU to all the previous reviewers of this CD. I was looking for gregorian chant the other day which led somehow to reviews of Celtic music and then I came across the 440+ reviews of this magical woman's music. I thought that if one singer could garner so much praise and enthuisiasm, then there must be something special about her! I'd never heard of Loreena McKinnett or any of her music before last week when I ordered this CD, but I have not stopped listening to it since; I actually listened to the whole CD one morning three times in a row! I did not know what to expect when I heard the first note of the Prologue, but I was immediately hooked and transported to another world. I am a bit of dreamer and romantic so this music fits my mindset perfectly. It is soothing, haunting, imaginative and beautiful. I love all the influences that I hear in each song, but to me there is definitely an overall Celtic feel to the music. From some of the reviews I thought I would have to get over my wariness of Middle Eastern music which tends to sound the same to me, but the blend of Celtic and Middle Eastern works wonderfully. It's 10 years since this CD first came out and I'm only discovering it for the first time, but I have to say the music is timeless which, given the various themes in some of the songs, is fitting. I love all kinds of music - my tastes range from Kate Bush to Earth Wind & Fire and everything else in between - but Loreena's music is a welcome addition to my CD collection. She's opened me up to a whole new appreciation of sound and imagery. I look forward to seeing her PBS special in March and listening/experiencing more of her music.

Once again, I cannot say More. Her voice and all the members of her band and all the other musicians on this album are phenomenal !!!

The stories and the lyrics on the sleeve included with the disc are wonderful to read.

Love it !!!

Take a look at the running times:

Disc 1: 60 minutes
Disc 2: 50 minutes
Disc 3: 61 minutes
Disc 4: 58 minutes

What gives Silva? There is *MUCH* more John Williams in the silva screen back catalogue by the Prague Philharmonic than what is in this set, and thats not including their entire discs devoted to Star Wars Films, Indiana Jones Trilogy etc. Why isn't Hook "When You're Alone" included on Disc 2? There's room. Why isn't 1941 on Disc 1? There's room. Why isn't Earthquake on Disc 3? There's room. Why isn't Far and Away on disc 4? There's room. Where's the other ten minutes of the Rare Breed suite on disc 3? Why isn't Midway on disc 1? Where are the Land of the Giants, Time Tunnel and Lots In Space tv themes? Etc. Etc. Etc.

C'mon Silva, most of these 4 disc mega boxes released in the past few years are packed to the brim, but not this one, and with new recordings made after this was released (the terminal, munich, geisha, war of the worlds, star wars ep 3, harry potter 3), it only makes sense for a "re-do" in the next couple of years.

Further, with Silva releasing the 100 Greatest Film Themes on six discs in a couple of months, it's only a matter of time before we see the ultimate six disc john williams set.

This isn't a BAD set to own, but it could have been much better and when compared to the Jerry Goldsmith and John Barry sets in this same series, this one is a major letdown.

5 out of 5 stars Always a pleaser.......2007-03-31

I listen to music all day with patients in my dental chair. This one is a winner with everyone. Patients always comment on how they recognize a song. Who doesn't love John Williams? His music transcends time.

5 out of 5 stars JOHN WILLIAMS 40 Years of Film Music.......2007-01-10

This 4 cd pack is an anthology of all John Williams works. From his earlier works "The Poseidon Adventure" and "Jaws" right through "Indiana Jones" and the most recent"Star Wars" prequel movies are included. Williams work in thriller and horror are also included. If you are into soundtracks and love movie music this is an essential buy. The quality of the music is excellent. With ten or more tracks on each cd it's well worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars Movie Music Magic & Memorabilia.......2006-12-13

This four CD set expands on the previously released John Williams Greatest Hits. It's a grand collection of nearly four hours of famous music scores from over forty years. There are many songs never before available in any collection. The short liner notes tell a great tale of musical movie history and include all of his numerous award nominations and wins. Each song (oddly enough) mentions the actors and the director, so fond are John Williams's memories of his work with these people. All of the conductors are mentioned along with specific orchestras, choirs, arrangement and orchestration specialists and even the publishers (contractual, I am sure). The only things missing are his early television scores, such as those for "Lost In Space" (by Johnny Williams back then). But with four discs, one has nothing to complain about and everything to enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars John Williams: 40 Years of Outstanding Film Music.......2006-11-28

I have been a huge fan of John Williams and I have known about his music for years. However, I never actually bought any of his music on CD. I was rather skeptical about purchasing this CD but when it arrived I knew I had made the right choice. The sound quality of the compilation is outstanding. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra do a great job under the direction of Paul Bateman. The original London Symphony Orchestra CDs of John Williams' Star Wars Trilogy CDs are marginally better but this is still a great CD compilation. If you love ET, Star Wars, Indiana Jones and Harry Potter, you will love this compilation soundtrack. Buy it, listen to these CDs in the car and enjoy every minute of the collection!!!

5 out of 5 stars The Gold Standard.............2007-06-18

What does one say about his favorite singer's most famous album? Here is the absolute prime best of a GREAT singer. This is where her best known song comes from. If you don't know what song, quit now; I pity you.

OK, you're still here. The whole album is fabulous. If you want just one of Carly's albums, THIS is the one. ["Reflections" is a collection; different matter] Maybe you're like me and already have ALL of Carly's albums; you're a wise, and lucky, person. Otherwise, this is one of the two essential albums for anybody over a certain age [Carole King's "Tapestry" being the other]. Five stars aren't nearly enough.

5 out of 5 stars The Best of the best .......2007-03-08

Probably Carly Simon's best album. Some hidden gems on here are "The Carter Family," "Embrace Me," "More than fond of Robin," and "We had no secrets," besides the obviously great "You're So Vain," and "The Right Thing to Do."

5 out of 5 stars It's No Secret These Are Hits.......2007-01-12

When Carly sings, it captivates my attention. Her voice, musical arrangement and lyrics hold me, not to mention the cover. Every song on this CD is a hit as far I am concerned. She is singing direct from her heart and I can tell she is revealing some personal information about her private life. Leave up to Carly to write a song and leave people in mystery as she did for "You're So Vain".

5 out of 5 stars Carly's crowning achievement........2006-12-22

Outdoing her previous pop-perfect albums "Carly Simon" and "Anticipation", Carly Simon's "No Secrets" blends the best of her pop/jazz/bluesy style. Like Carole King's "Tapestry" and Joni Mitchell's "Court and Spark", "No Secrets" marked the pinnacle of her illustrious singer/songwriting career. A classic album in every sense.

5 out of 5 stars "NO SECRETS": CARLY SIMON'S ROCK CLASSIC.......2006-12-09

This album, Carly Simon's third, with its iconic cover image, is the one that really put her at the top of the heap of lady singer-songwriters. For "No Secrets" is an excellent album showcasing her strong songwriting, musicianship and vocal abilities.

Perhaps at the time, people were wondering what could she do to top "That's The Way I've Always Heard It Should Be" and "Anticipation", both great not only in their singles appeal, but also in their crafting. Then along comes "You're So Vain", her powerhouse diatribe to a smug, conceited ex.

However, "You're So Vain", being as great as it is, is not the only example of greatness on this album, which is another one of Carly's classic, timeless releases. There are several other masterpieces here: "Embrace Me, You Child", her song-memory of her father's illness and death is infused with religious imagery which evokes the god-like power she must have imagined, as a child, her father (Richard Simon, the founder of Simon & Schuster Publishing) to possess; "Waited So Long", a bluesy-rock number (featuring an excellent turn on slide guitar by Lowell George of Little Feat) follows and is another fascinating glimpse into her relationship with her father and its sassiness is interestingly juxtaposed with "Embrace Me, You Child"; "It Was So Easy" is a wonderful sing-along ode to the lost innocence of childhood; "His Friends Are More Than Fond Of Robin" is such a gorgeous ballad in which is expressed a pure, simple, unrequited love; "The Carter Family" is a moral tale of a person who never realizes, until it's too late, how much certain people really mean. Then toss into the mix the bouncy hit "The Right Thing To Do", her rocking take on James Taylor's "Night Owl" and the intoxicating title track and you have an album that flows seamlessly.

Carly Simon's lyrics have always been top-notch musical poetry and on "No Secrets" we have some very special sly nods I particularly enjoy. In "Waited So Long", she references her first big hit, letting us know she's changed her mind about marriage ("I met a boy with eyes of green/The warmest eyes I'd ever seen/He gave his lovin' love to me/The way I've always heard it would be") and the closing track, "When You Close Your Eyes", obviously harkens to James' "You Can Close Your Eyes".

Carly's vocals run the gamut of sweet ("The Right Thing" and "Robin") to ferocious ("You're So Vain" and "Night Owl"). It seems she knows, intuitively, how to properly emote the feelings of each song to the listener.

"No Secrets" is truly a rock classic worthy of space on anyone's shelf.

Well, it is a La Face record, so of course it has the Babyface stamp all over it--especially on "Let It Flow," also featured on his Waiting to Exhale soundtrack, and "There's No Me Without You." 'Face does step aside, however, to give other producers, songwriters, and artists their time with Miss Braxton, most notably R. Kelly, Diane Warren, Tony Rich, and Kenny G. R&B songbirds in their own right, Shanice Wilson and Chante Moore even show up on backing vocals. The album doesn't quite live up to this overdose of talent; it's too crammed with boring ballads (even if Braxton's low, husky vocals are perfectly suited for them, especially the wrenching watermark of the album, "Un-Break My Heart"). It's when she slips into a sultry groove on "Come On Over Here" and the smash single "You're Makin Me High" that she really shines. --Rebecca Wallwork

2 out of 5 stars Boring CD.......2007-06-04

There is only one really good song, "Un-break my heart", which warms my heart with the sadness of the emotions of this song. The other song I can stand is "How could an angel break my heart", but the rest of the songs are not good in any way. Boring music, no melodies, they sound really rushed.

5 out of 5 stars The good old days A... Toni.......2007-05-20

Everyone knows of Toni Braxton and this cd was one of the reasons why.

5 out of 5 stars amazing r&b/jazzy/soft rock album.......2006-12-31

I bought this album sometime after Unbreak My Heart was released, I was about 13. I thought it was one of the best albums I owned and it's aged really nicely too. I still listen to it time to time when relaxing. She may have played it safe with her sophomore album by working with hot r&b producers like babyface, r.kelly and tony rich, but it really works. The ballads are beautiful and smoky hot and her voice blends into the music so beautifully. A lot of singles were released from this album from 1996 through 1997, some of which were just released to radio while others had music videos. I remember her getting a lot of billboard, ama and grammy awards at the time in her revealing dresses, and her being the talk of the award shows the next day at school. Another memory is the remix of you're making me high that had a reggae/hip hop vibe to it. Just be warned that this CD doesn't really have any fast tracks, it's mostly soft, jazzy r&b ballads.

5 out of 5 stars still the best.......2006-03-10

after 10 years on release secrets still is one of my fav albums.I brought this album when i was ten ( YEAH A LIL DEEP FOR A TEN YEAR OLD BUT HEY THATS ME) now im all grown up i can appreicate this album for what it is ,a magnificent collection of pure bliss.Toni's voice is rich and emotive while the music is what truly makes this album one of the greatest ,melodic ,seductive and sexy bests. evey track just flows .The best tracks for me are let if flow love the guitar arragement,i love me some him, theres no me without you, find me a man and the timeless beauty that is how could an angel break my heart.Lovely saxaphone from kenny g flawless songwriting from babyface (one of my favs) and the beautiful voice of toni .

what i love about toni is the way she pronounces every single letter of the lyrics she sings so amazingly.Toni might be on album number 5 but this will always be her higest moment .x

5 out of 5 stars Romantic & Relaxing.......2006-03-04

This is one of her best albums in my opinion, and I have 8 of her albums. If you're into her upbeat and fast tracks, then I wouldn't recommend this one. This one is very romantic and relaxing.

4 out of 5 stars C&C at their best.......2007-07-04

This album should be called "The Best of Coheed and Cambria". The opening track is a refined version of the opener from SSTB, and it just gets better from there. Title track gets the show going quickly, with the two radio singles sprinkled into the "storyline" that is C&C's trademark. Personal favorite is Camper Velorium III. Where else can you here the line "Die white girls, bye bye world."?

5 out of 5 stars This is what introduced me to the wide world of prog........2007-03-09

Coheed and Cambria... I've listened to quite a number of different bands in the last 2 years, but there are really only two that I still listen to routinely: Coheed and Cambria and Weezer.

I think I like Coheed better because of their prog tendencies. Especially The Light and The Glass and The Camper Velorium III (the latter isn't very prog, though).

This band's a really good transition from the pop-punk most people listen to to the prog that really blows the mind. They don't seem to do a lot of weird time signatures like Dream Theater or Genesis, but the ongoing story and extended tracks make them prog. Halfway.

Just, please, don't call them emo or punk. For my sanity.

5 out of 5 stars keeping the secrets.......2006-11-12

Coheed & Cambria, made a giant leap from their first LP. One big difference is Claudio's vocals. They have grown deeper on this album (quite a blessing) and the songs are filled with wonderful guitar ballads (In Keeping the Secrets of Silent Earth: 3, Cuts Marked In the March of Men, The Crowing). Between the awesome guitar playing, the lyrics are definitly something to pay attention to (for ex. "I'll do anything for you...I'll cut the throats of babies...), yeah these songs can be violent and beautiful at the same time. The Light & The Glass, is also another beautiful song (which includes the line "Good Apollo, I'll be Burning Star IV", referencing the title of their next album). If you have never heard of this band, well try this cd. You will be hooked. Fans of the first cd, well you probably already have this.

5 out of 5 stars Co&Ca Fans rejoice! (hehehehe).......2006-11-10

Coheed & Cambria's second release, third part in Claudio Sanchez's epic sci-fi story, and heaviest album yet. Right from the start it pulls you in with the amazing guitars, technical drums, and emotional vocals. A definite for any one even the slightest bit interested in Co&Ca.

1 out of 5 stars I can't believe you people.......2006-10-05

Since when was it good music for a guy who sounds like a girl to blurt out expletives overtop of lame chord progressions? Never! This album seems to be the band's most respected work, though if you ask me they deserve no respect. The brains of all these five star reviewers have apparently been numbed musically, because surely no-one in an upright American society would be fooled into thinking this so-called "Music" is actually good for the ears. Wrong-o! This album, right here, is the worst CD I have ever heard. I promise you that is no spur of the moment exaggeration, it's just so awful. This band needs to lose its popularity NOW. They're just like New Found Glory and Rush; ruined by the singer. But in this case, the music wouldn't have been any good with another singer even; everything that could go wrong has.
If you want GOOD music, ya ain't gonna find it here! I highly recommend Muse, Fatboy Slim, Chemical Brothers, and Oasis, but that's just me. This CD is so horrible; I could go on forever about its inferiority in the music world but the music speaks for itself. Sheesh does it suck. 'Tis all 4 now.

With the soundtrack to Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood, O Brother, Where Art Thou? producer T Bone Burnett has compiled another gently nostalgic gem. Filled with covers of jazz standards, sparse blues picking, and traditional Cajun pieces, Sisterhood matches Brother in ambiance and impeccable musicianship. The highlights are numerous: Bob Dylan's lively song waltzes with a raspy narrative, Lauryn Hill uses acoustic plucking to complement her soulful croon, and Bob Schneider contributes an understated love-ballad rumbling with piano. Even the cover songs are first-rate; Macy Gray jive-jumps through a faithful Billie Holiday cover, and Tony Bennett slows things down with a dapper and distinguished Nat "King" Cole homage. Despite the diffuse genres covered, the superior quality of Sisterhood's songs renders these differences negligible, and the album's pacing ensures a pleasing alternation of styles that never lags. In fact, there's nary a bad song on the entire album. The divine secret's out--Sisterhood is an essential listen. --Annie Zaleski

4 out of 5 stars The vibrant spirit of the South, from blues to Cajun.......2005-12-03

The excellent soundtrack to "Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood" is a divine gumbo full of juicy bits of blues (Slim Harpo, Jimmy Reed, Ray Charles), gospel (Mahalia Jackson), lounge (Tony Bennett, Taj Mahal), back-porch Cajun fiddle (Ann Savoy, Blind Uncle Gaspard), bluegrass (Alison Krauss), R&B (Lauryn Hill, Macy Gray), even Bob Dylan makes an appearance. There were only two songs that I didn't care for: Drug State by Jade Vincent and Dimming of the Day by Richard and Linda Thompson. Produced by T Bone Burnett, the genius behind the massively successful O Brother Where Art Thou soundtrack, "Ya-Ya Sisterhood" does a great job capturing the diverse musical genres of the post-WWII South.

5 out of 5 stars Great music.......2004-12-15

This is a Great CD for cruising in the car or even better cruising on the river . . The Pee Dee or the Waccamaw:)
Its a pretty good intro into Zydeco if you are unfamiliar with it. The modern pop stuff is pretty good too.

4 out of 5 stars Divine Music of The Ya-Ya Sisterhood.......2003-10-05

The film is about how the wounds of the past affect the feelings and the behaviour of generations of some people and their families. The soundtrack plays an important role in it.

Who enjoyed the overwhelming presence of a quality cast in the film will not be disappointed with the soundtrack.

It is a soundtrack involved with feelings, exhaling different emotions in each track. Gorgeous performances of Lauryn Hill, Bob Schneider and Alison Krauss.

4 out of 5 stars looking for the name of a song.......2003-08-31

Loved the movie, love the soundtrack, but I am looking for the name of the song near the end, where the band is playing for Vivi's birthday party. It is not in the soundtrack and is has a great sound to it. Does anyone know the name of that tune and the band playing it?

4 out of 5 stars T-Bone Burnett does it again.......2003-08-14

Once more, after the incredible success of the OST for "O Brother, where art thou", the now-legendary producer comes back with the soundtrack to another very enjoyable movie. Although I could honestly live without the French-sung Ann Savoy tracks (which actually comprise the majority of the first half of the album), the rest of the songs really make a solid album. With classic tracks pulled from legends such as Jimmy Reed, Bob Dylan, Ray Charles and Taj Mahal, combined with some truly exquisite songs by recent acts such as Lauryn Hill (her song, I simply love!) and Macy Gray, the album comes out as a very solid "follow-up" (if such a thing is fair to say) to "O Brother...", yet considerably more eclectic. In the end, I give it only four stars only because the stream of six songs opening the album really turn me off. It takes a little "patience" to get through them into the best material of the album, in my opinion.

If there's one thing film producers and record executives like more than Success, it's Success: Part 2. Thus when Ridley Scott's high-tech sword 'n' sandal epic scored both Golden Globe wins and Academy Award nods for Best Film and Best Score, it was a sure bet that another volume of Hans Zimmer's and Lisa Gerrard's music for the film couldn't be far behind. Though not exactly leftovers, the tracks here sometimes point to the fact that there wasn't enough fresh material to fill this volume out, hence we get some remixed cues, a handful of familiar music with dramatic dialog excerpts edited and superimposed (or misplaced, with decidedly mixed results), and even a beat-heavy, dance-club mix of "Now We Are Free." With a little over half an hour of entirely fresh material and some souvenir dialog snippets over the rest, there's enough here to please Gladiator die-hards. Also of note: guitarist Heitor Pereira's flamenco-flavored flourishes are better showcased throughout; and "The Gladiator Waltz" serves up one of Zimmer's original synth demos (with a dash of Russell Crowe dialog up front)--a dramatic amp-up of Holst's "Mars, the Bringer of War" that's a prime example of the composer's state-of-the-art digital orchestral conjuring. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars Essential.......2006-12-30

One of those pivotal soundtracks. Unfortunately, there is dialogue over a few of the tracks, but it is well worth sitting or fast-forwarding through. There is a duduk (the sound used for that thing Mr. Tumnus plays in 'Narnia'), and I have fallen in love with it. There is the use of a female voice (Lisa Gerrard) wailing in another language, which had become something of a trend ('Troy', 'Munich', 'Narnia' again, and many others). "Now We Are Free" is the kind of song that first intrigues you, then entraps you, and then takes you on an emotional ride. The soundtrack is intensely bittersweet, exciting ("The Gladiator Waltz"--yes, you're supposed to giggle--Hans did!), and just very consumable. If you were impressed by movie--and I haven't run into anybody yet who wasn't--then consider this soundtrack an equivalent of that experience, but audio.

5 out of 5 stars HANS ZIMMER IS THE GREATEST PRESENT DAY COMPOSER!!!.......2005-10-23

I HAVE TO SAY HANS ZIMMER IS THE GREATEST OF HIS ERA. I HAVE PURCHASED ALMOST ALL OF HIS MAJOR SCORES FROM RAIN MAN, CRIMSON TIDE, GLADIATOR, AND EVEN THE LATEST BATMAN AND I KNOW I HAVE PLENTY OF MORE THAT COULD BE LISTED. I FIRST WAS WEIRY ABOUT BUYING THE SECOND SCORE TO GLADIATOR THINKING IT WOULD BE JUST LIKE THE FIRST ONE. IT IS AWESOME AND JUST AS GOOD OR BETTER, IF YOU ARE A TRUE ZIMMER FAN YOU HAVE TO ADD THIS TO YOUR COLLECTION. I HOPE HE KEEPS MAKING MUSIC FOR YEARS TO COME.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Extention!.......2005-10-22

Gladiator may be the best middle eastern score ever written. The Duduk was incredible!

The first CD was amazing as well, however, I believe this disc to have a few advantages.

First of all, "The Gladiator Waltz." This song TOTALLY improves upon "The Battle" from disc 1. The original stopped way before the new track. The synth sounds are very good, and don't take away from the beauty at all!

Another highlight is "Homecoming" this is a sad, angry song that will have your blood pumping. If you've seen the movie, you remember the scene where Maximus escapes execution, and rides home like a mad man, only to find his wife and son Crucified. A truly angry and intense song.

"Secrets" is a sneaky evil track, portraying the violent insanity of Commodus.

I have mentioned the highlights, but all the rest are great too! A must have CD, even if you own the first!

4 out of 5 stars beautiful music.......2005-07-28

This is just what the title says: more great(beautiful) music from the motion picture, including some "spiced-up" remixes. This album also features sound clips from the movie. Listening to it will make you think you're in Rome again.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing companion to the Oscar nominated score........2005-05-28

The original score for Gladiator was a grand triumph for composer Hans Zimmer. Unfortunatly, this cd follows a trend during the latter half of the 1990's. When you have a successful score cd, follow it up with a cd full of dialogue, demo tracks and occassional new music. That is what this cd is full off. I expected more of the great music from the movie, instead I was disappointed bitterly.
