This is a 2 CD collection of James Brown's early days. He hasn't found the style that would make him the Funkmaster, but he's looking for it awfully hard. He can't quite shake that 1950s feel; the saxes yaketty-yak instead of blurt and growl, and many of his vocals retain a crooner's feel. Some later hits show up in rudimentary formations--"I Found You" will become "I Feel Good"--and some, like the intro to "And I Do Just What I Want," are fully mature statements. This collection is recommended, but not fully essential.

Earle rushed The Revolution Starts ... Now to stores ahead of the 2004 presidential election, and given that timing and the songwriter's righteous lefty stance, the disc's topical content should surprise exactly no one. Even still, it's light on invective, allowing Earle's deftly drawn characters to make his points for him. Plainspoken people swept up by larger events, they include the truck-driving protagonist of rig-rocker "Home to Houston," who dodges rockets while running supplies in Iraq, the disaffected vet in "The Gringo's Tale," and the American soldiers and Palestinian boys whose lives run parallel in "Rich Man's War." At times, Earle is less artful, and the going gets patchy: the title cut is a guitars-blazing call to arms, but "Warrior" (a ponderous spoken-word piece that apes Shakespeare), "F the CC" (a ragged denunciation of culture cops), and "Condi, Condi" (a faux-reggae mash note to Condoleezza Rice) don't hold up as well. Interestingly, the less-pointed material finds the cantankerous crusader at his best, as on the aching Emmylou Harris duet "Comin' Around," a late-night barroom blues called "I Thought You Should Know," and the hopeful closer "The Seeker." There, Earle slips in one last, subtle message: "There's a new day tomorrow and maybe I'll hold, something brighter than gold to a seeker." --Anders Smith Lindall

The Revolution stalls out.......2007-03-21
Before the no votes start piling up, let me put this upfront. I really dig Steve Earle. To my tastes, both "Copperhead Road" and "El Corazon" are five star records. But "The Revolution Starts Now" was a rush job and sounds it. I even saw Earle on tour for this CD and he was a big a firebrand as ever. I also worked in Nashville when he was trolling the gutters, begging for change and trying to kick. Steve Earle is an artist I have long believed worth hearing through thick and thin.
"The Revolution Starts Now" is part of the thin. Recorded in a hurry to beat the 2002 elections (a lot of good that did...sigh), it also meant that songs that may have been left off with a little more time stayed on the CD to beef the running time. The pseudo-Shakespeare of "Warrior" wears out after a couple of listens, and "Condi Condi" is pointless. Add the reprise of the title track and you have a pretty good EP with a load of filler.
But Earle on an off day beats 90% of artists at their peak performance. "The Revolution Starts..." kicks the CD off with a glorious racket worthy of any good protest-rally song. Even the obscenities gleefully barked out during "F the CC" are as big a slap at radio as you've ever heard. Not like Earle gets play these days...rightwing Clear Channel wouldn't even touch the non-threatening Dixie Chicks music. I would find it hard to imagine a genuinely inciting country-folk diatribe like "Rich Man's War" getting airtime next to Carrie Underwood. Or Toby Keith, for that matter. Trying to wrap the parallel paths of expendable boy soldiers like Jimmy or Ali from either side of the line would probably be too much to ask from a crowd that craves "We will stick a red white and blue boot up your a**," would it not?
Same for the mercenary on the run in "The Gringo's Tale" or the hapless Haliburton employee stuck driving truckloads of gas in "Home To Houston." The message is blunt, but the songs aren't. That is what makes Earle a master craftsman. When he puts away the politics for "Coming Around" and the splendid "I Thought You Should Know," you get the reminders of what made Earle a genius to watch back in the days of "Guitar Town" and "Exit Zero."
If this was a seven song EP, I probably would have given it four stars. Sadly, this is less an album-as-a-piece and more like a batch of songs jerked together. The lame tracks hold the affair down to three and 1/2. I am even willing to goose it just to counter the looney rightwingers that post a one star review without having as much as listened to the CD. But if you want to hear a rabble-rouser at full throttle, the best songs on "The Revolution Starts Now" will stir your pot.
3 stars for about 4 good songs.........2007-02-28
This is an overall forgettable album when you compare it to any of Steve's other work. "Rich Man's war" "Home to Houston" and the title track are up to standard, the others are b-side fillers, and they sound like it. Earle did this entire albumn in a short span and quite hurridly, so it does make sense. The fact that he wrote a great anthem "F the CC" and a excellent anti-war song "Rich Man's War" is a true testiment that this guy can write good songs even in a hurry.
He Ain't No Emmas Revolution.......2007-02-02
Good songs, good songwriter but if you want to hear REAL Revolution Rauk you need to hear Emmas Revolution. They didn't just jump on the revolution/hate Bush bandwagon because it was suddenly cool - they've hated Bush for a long time. I will say that this album is extremely intelligent for a man with only an 8th grade education and for those who criticize his "Condi Condi" song - maybe he's being sincere? You don't know. He has been married about 20 times... maybe he thinks it's about time for another "switch up"? And lets face it: Condi is hot. A little out of his league, but you can't blame a guy for tryin, can you?
Raw, powerful.......2007-01-26
The appeal of this album is its raw approach to social awareness. Earle doesn't hold back. The CD was out early in the Iraq war -- unlike other singers and groups, Earle didn't wait to see if the war would be popular or not. Criminee, it took Neil Young a years to get his anti-war CD to market.
And that get-it-out-now approach of Revolution Starts Now is what makes the music dangerous. And fun. This is a significant contribution to the anti-war movement.
Personally, I'm not offended by "F the CC". However, you might be. If so, just don't copy it over to your iPod. "Condi, Condi" is one of the freshest and funniest political slams I've ever heard. "Warrior" is incredible.
My favorite song on the CD is "Rich Man's War". Some folks think Earle is comparing American soldiers to suicide bombers. He's not. Instead, he's suggesting that those who control the violence have much in common with each other.
Earle alternates from angry to wistful to proud to angry, again. It all works. I have a 6-CD changer in my truck. The Revolution Starts...Now is nearly always in it.
So What's New...?.......2006-11-02
Same old liberal garbage...no doubt popular in his circle...'birds of a feather'. Nevetheless, the Republic suvives in spite of the S.E.'s of the world.

Best Drinking CD Ever!!!.......2005-04-06
My buddy in college gave me this CD. His friend had heard them at some bar at U of A, and bought a CD. This album is incredible. Now, the lyrics are not exactly deep...but they are catchy, recognizable, relatable sing- (shout-) along lyrics and girls love these songs, too. I had so, so, so many good nights listening to this CD getting absolutely tossed and singing as loud as I possibly could! Souls Aflame is a great album, too, but after that their more produced material (a lot of which is just rereleases of the first two album's tracks) kinda suck. They're weak sounding and poppy. Buy this CD and Souls Aflame. They're cheap. They're fun.
Quit Comparing O.A.R. to DMB!.......2005-03-22
The only comparison between the two is that they both tend to have long drawn out melodies. Whoever invented that analogy should be shot in the face. O.A.R. is amazing. If you actually know the band you will know that this entire C.D. was written and recorded while the band was still in HIGH SCHOOL! Blow your mind at all? Give the CD a listen and you'll be amazed. Don't judge on what you've read or the 30 second samples. Quite frankly if you have any interest in ska or reggae or jam bands, or just happy feel good musict actually listen to the band and I assure you will you will love it. Once you hear the CD, go see them live, they put on an amazing show
dmb sucks compared to OAR!! .......2005-01-01
OAR totally blows DMB away! I just saw them at the 930 club in DC, and it was the most amazing show i've ever seen. I have also seen DMB in concert, but they just dont have the same energy. OAR is in a league of their own. Any true fan of music will appreciate the way they mix different styles and genres, and come up with some of the best music out there! OAR RULES!!
Love all O.A.R music.......2004-10-09
I actually listened to this CD for the first time a few weeks ago. What a difference between the music now and this CD. It is not a bad thing but just the inprovement is incredible. Just shows how far you guys have come. I hope you guys continue to make kick ass yet chill music. True O.A.R. fans should understand this. Keep up the great work. This may be a long shot. If one of the band members reads this maybe they can shoot me an e-mail. No not shoot me---lol
JamieNiergarth6@msn.com Thanks---You guys kick ass!!!!!!!!!!

gotta say i love it.
To me this cd is more representative of Sublime or Long Beach Dub Allstars, than DMB.

This is an AMAZING CD!.......2007-05-13
If this is your 1st O.A.R Cd, it's a must! All the songs are so good and true to their sound... unlike their more recent stuff(even though its still good).
You can listen to this Cd for hours and not get tired of it.
So good luck & I hope you consider "Souls Aflame", it's my personal favorite :)
Jam Band craze.......2005-03-18
I cannot even begin to tell you how many of my friends listen to OAR, Jack Johnson, Ben Harper, Phish, Ben Kweller, etc. I have to admit at first i was skeptical of the whole jam band music scene, but i had found a cd that one of my friends left over which just happend to be OAR. so of course out of curiousity i popped it in my cd player. And i ABSOLUTLY LOVED IT!!! Now i am all about the jam band craze. All of their cds are great to kick back and listen to with some friends, ridin down the road or perfect for listenin to at the beach and just relaxin and havin a great time. "I feel home", "hangover", "sail away", and "3am" are my favorite songs. ok, bottom line... GREAT BUY! especially for all of the Jam Band lovers out there.
frat-boy rock.......2004-09-30
Great soul-searching tunes for the former frat-boy with his buds in their golf cart. This music lacks the depth and genuine soul of more popular jam bands. They rock to a decent beat, but nothing special or terribly original.
Best O.A.R. Available.......2004-05-10
This is the best of O.A.R's 4 studio released albums. All of the songs contain their authentic sound with "So moved on" being the best ("City on down" and "i feel home" are not too far behind). If don't have any O.A.R. cd's, get this one first, but be sure to buy their other 3 studio albums and their awesome live album "Any Time Now." Also, if you get the chance, go see them live, it's quite an experience.
Up another notch...........2003-05-02
They're progressing as far as musicians and song-writers. Marc's voice is raspy, however that's what makes the CD a must-have. If you appreciate good wholesome lyrics and beats that can't make you upset, then you've got a problem. This CD cures all that, and then some..mark my words, they will be huge someday.

great reggae........2007-02-13
already discovered the treasures of bob marley? already have "the harder they come" soundtrack? love burning spear and toots and the maytals? wondering where to turn now in the world of reggae? let me suggest this album. "handsworth revolution" is a reggae classic, brimming with soul, great rhthyms, creativity (there's even a spanish type guitar intro to the tune "prediction"), and warm passionate songs. a total winner.
Innovators of Reggae.......2006-02-21
In my mind, Handsworth Revolution is a riveting album. Songs such as Klu Klux Klan, Prodigal Son, are more than songs..they are a lyrical masterpiece. When the album first starts and you hear the bassline from Handsworth...just brings you into another world for a moment. I strongly recommend this album, Tribute to the Martyrs and also Aswad's Not Satisfied & Hulet if your into this "type" of reggae. The vocals sound more harmonic and almost in a chant like state at times. Makes the sound and it's message very impactful. Hope you enjoy.

GENIUS OR LUNATIC?.......2002-09-13
"Revolution dub" dates from the early days of the Black Ark studio and features nine short stabs of stripped down minimalist dub music, instantly recognisable as the work of Lee "Scratch" Perry the Upsetter. It's one of my favourite dub albums of the 1970's, even though by 21st century standards it's more than a little brief (just over 30 minutes is simply not enough these days). This cd reissue also suffers from poor sound quality on some of the tracks, which sadly is often the case with Lee Perry re-releases, but fortunately the quality of the music shines through.
The opening "Dub revolution" sets the mood: slow, deep and heavy, with only some crisp rhythm guitar prominent in the mix alongside the bass and drums, plus intermittent fx and vocal interruptions from the Upsetter ("This is dub revolution! Music to rock the nation!" etc)....
Perry has always taken risks with sound, using his maverick imagination to push the very basic technology at his disposal to the limits. Maybe not as slick-sounding as some people would like, his productions have always been infused with a special kind of musical madness and this album is no exception. For example, "Doctor on the go" features snippets from vintage British TV sitcom "Doctor in the house" mixed into a version of Junior Byles' excellent "The long way" and somehow it works perfectly. Go figure.
not perry's best.......2001-06-22
i dig a lot of perry's mixing--he truly set the standard for lo-fi dub. what wrecks this disc for me, however, is the childish ear-shattering belches & other annoying noxious sounds from perry's mouth. if he'd kept his mouth shut on this one, it would be much more listenable. there's also a great deal of vocals left on these recordings, and in my opinion, they don't add much. i suggest "upsetter in dub" over this recording. if you really like the vocals i find annoying, i suggest "kung fu meets the dragon," where his noises are more comical & appropriate in the context of the theme.
"revolution dub" is a 1998 re-issue of tracks from the 1970's. musicians credited include: boris gardener, michael "boo" richards, benbow, earl "chinna" smith, mikey chung, billy boy, keith stirling, winston wright, scully simms, and perry himself adding to the percussion. the track notes about perry's studio and nickname are interesting.
superb.......2000-09-21
One of Perry's most enlightened lps and among the best he ever did, "Revolution Dub" continues to stand the test of time beautifully.
The tracks are funky and filled with Perry's amazing studio wizardry- echoplex chambers are common throughout, as is reverb (check out my favorite track on the cd, "Kojak")
The cd is solid from start to finish and is an essental Perry cd to have in your collection.
dont leave home with out this masterpiece.......1999-03-12

Diamond in the Rough.......2002-09-02
An overlooked, underated, seminal landmark of an album, not only for the Wailers but for Reggae in general. The production (Lee Perry), musical, and vocal arrangements on this album were groundbreaking. The Wailers experimented in ways they had not done before or after. Unique, original, raw, and stripped down. If you think "Legend" is the best the Wailers had to offer then this may not be your cup of tea. But if you're a budding Wailers/Reggae fan looking to expand your horizons this would be essential for your collection.
The original Wailers at a point of transition.......2001-12-12
Here is a real band, with a certain spark, a tautness that seems to be lacking from the mature Wailers, and from 70's reggae in general. I find their very next release, African Herbsman, already considerably less exciting. This is one of the tightest, freakiest rhythm-section recordings I've ever heard. Always that behind-the-beat feeling, but even at its most laid-back it reminds me of James Brown or something in its supple, effortless complexity, the alert sensitivity of each musician. Listen to the bass lines too closely and you are at risk of seizure. Staccatto organ and plucky, out-of-tune guitars fill out the chords, but the star of the music is the percussion. There seems to be a second guitarist who does nothing but scratch his instrument like a washboard. And the loudest thing in nearly every mix is the shaker, yes the shaker, three times louder than the vocals, which is the kind of pleasurable eccentricity you expect from a Lee Perry production.
Then there are the songs, which are great, still showing a direct influence from American R&B (there's a cover of "Try Me"), and he doesn't seem to be preaching about Jah all time, or maybe he is, but I can't understand a word of the delightfully thick dialect. The Wailers' all-male, falsetto backups have a humor to them, like singing forest animals in an old cartoon. You will recognize several of the songs ("Soul Rebel", "Duppy Conqueror", "Corner Stone", "400 Years", "Soul Almighty") from later versions, re-recorded for the U.S. market. Predictably, the versions here are far fresher.
These tracks were recorded in 1970 and originally released in '74 under the name Soul Rebel - not to be confused with a later collection called Soul Rebels - and I believe there's something else out there called Rasta Revolution - but don't be led astray, this is the one that begins with the song 'Mr. Brown'. Available domestically now, for the first time ever! I'm curious to hear the 2-disc set called Rebel Revolution, which apparently offers extended mixes of these songs and others from the same period.

These 1954-56 live recordings of a young Elvis Presley (still a teen on many of them) appearing on the Louisiana Hayride radio show out of Shreveport, Louisiana, have long been considered some of rock's most important documents, despite their often shrill and distorted sound quality. Their sonic limitations and legal status (most were recorded prior to Presley signing with RCA) have also kept them marginalized. Those sound problems (the original crude recordings were made solely through the singer's vocal mic, which often obliterated Presley's acoustic guitar and Bill Black's bass) inspired Tomato Records to commit what some may consider heresy on nine of the best-sounding recordings--that is, recruit contemporary musicians to recreate the muffled guitar and bass parts and dub them back into the mix. The results are both subtle and unobtrusive, giving the historic performances some much-needed immediacy. If the included Hayride intros and promos and Lucky Strike commercial give the collection some additional perspective, they also help pad the running time of what is an otherwise very brief CD. Still, a burnished Presley in his Sun prime (including Presley's landmark first Hayride appearance, showcasing both sides of his first Sun Records single, "That's All Right, Mama" and "Blue Moon of Kentucky") is hard to resist. --Jerry McCulley

A by gone time...........2007-02-02
The older I get the more i really enjoy the music of the past. I am really sick of the over produced, over fixed music that American is pushing out by the thousands. I really love classic, real music. If you can't sing your shouldn't. What I LOVE about this album is the raw, real Elvis. This is why he was the king. You can hear the love of the music in his voice, the love of what he is doing. If you are a fan this is one of the best recordings that you can buy. Makes me realize why I am a fan.
Time capsule.......2002-10-10
Listening to this is like finding an old reel-to-reel recording made by your parents from a radio show. It's more a historical recording than a "good listening" recording, although the restoration is brilliant. If you're interested in hearing (the young) Elvis at his very best get the Sun Sessions CD. If you want to hear Elvis and feel like you're sitting in the waybackradiomachine, get this one. No reason you can't have it both ways...get one of each!
elvis 30#1 hits.......2002-09-26

Elvis Like We'd Never Hear Him Again.......2002-08-27
This disc features the first ever "live" recorded performances of Elvis Presley taken from the famous radio show "The Louisiana Hayride." Only 19 years old at the time of the first performance, Elvis simply shattered the status quo. The energy, the power, the excitement he delivered was like no one before or after. The CD, ROOTS REVOLUTION, brings it all home. Slamming together blues, gospel, country and swing, Elvis took tunes like "That's All Right, Mama," "Maybelline," and "Baby Let's Play House," to new heights. Before long Elvis would be bigger than life, adored by millions, but at the time of the Hayride recordings it was still unadulterated, raw and real. I highly recommend this disc to any and all music fans.
So, this is how it was? Wow ! ! !.......2002-08-20
The "Roots Revolution: Louisiana Hayride" CD is successful because the music included is clear and it is probably the closest you can get and imagine how Elvis, Scotty, Bill and DJ Fontana sounded during those early live concerts. The CD comes with a mini book which contains anecdotes of the Hayride shows with black & white pictures of Elvis and an explanation of the restoration process. For those fans who were not present in those early concerts but want to experience how it was, this is a must.

Amazing but perhaps unneccesarry.......2007-05-23
Any collaboration of Bunny, Tosh, Marley and perry is inevitably going to blow your speakers and your mind. This collection is no different. However, for the price and rarity of this item, there are only a few tracks you won't find on other cheaper and easy to score marley albums. It is merely a compilation of perry rocksteady material. If you dont already have them, buy African Herbsman, Soul Rebels, Rasta revolution, Catch a Fire, Burnin. I would only recommend this album to serious Bob Marley Collectors.
Reissue of the 1971 album.......2003-01-01
This set is a reissue of the two albums that were released in 1971. The "Soul Revolution Part II" album, and "Soul Revolution Part II: The Rhythm album". They were released in 1971 after Soul Rebels was released. All three of these albums were produced by Lee Perry. The albums mark the best music of that period. On this box set, "Don't Rock the Boat", "Put it On", "Duppy Conqueror", "Kaya", "Stand Alone", and "Sun is Shining" are among Bob's best vocals. They're are some bonus tracks on these cd's, which are "Soul Rebel", "Mr.Brown", and their instrumentals. Excellent set of music, hard to find though. Be lucky to even find the vinyl set.
proof of a profit....produced by lee(scratch)perry.......1999-05-13
cd 1 is very early takes of some of bob's most powerful tunes. the lyrics on this album are incredibly spiritual and have inspired me in many ways. cd 2 is the instumental dub to cd 1. (the rythum tracks). this is the greatest raggae music ever recorded. lee perry brings the wailers to a level of creativety that will never be topped.
