Jackie Wilson is another example of a superstar whose accomplishments are forgotten or neglected by history.An aspiring opera singer, a former boxer;he was a man who's vocal range was remarkable.He was one of the few artists that charted on both the rhythm and blues and pop charts.Jackie was so charismatic that his mere smile would have women swooning in groves.Jackie,not Teddy Pendergrast, was the one who originally hosted 'women only' concerts,to standing-room audiences!This collection lacks two important songs-"At Last" and "Danny Boy"The latter is one of the most heart-felt and vocally beautiful rendering of any song I've ever heard.The former is one of his charted pop tunes ,and showed the amazing versatility of the man. Jackie was the original "hardest working man in show business" long before James Brown claimed the title,and his boxing background enabled him to demonstrate some mind-blowing moves on stage.I hope God "lifted him higher." As is typical for the UK Ace label, they were ahead of the curve with this 1987 release, gathering together Wilson's essential sides, and filling out a 24-track menu (62 minutes) with well selected rarities that span Wilson's entire career. Rhino's similarly titled single-disc retrospective checks in with eight fewer cuts, and the revitalized Brunswick's 2002 collection ("20 Greatest Hits") with four less. Masters are a mix of mono (1-3, 7, 9, 11-12, 15-16) and stereo (4-6, 8, 10, 13-14, 17-24). Those who want a more extensive catalog of Wilson's career (including a look at his earliest work with Billy Ward & The Dominoes, and a deeper helping of his early '70s soul sides) should look for a copy of Rhino's out-of-print 3-CD "Mr. Excitement," but most will be perfectly satisfied by this collection. One of the best R+B singers of his generation.......2005-01-17

Jackie Wilson, whose style of music was at the R+B end of the rock'n'roll spectrum, had a long string of hits in America during the fifties and sixties but it was only in the eighties that he made any real impact in Britain (a few years after he died) following the use of one of his songs in a TV commercial.
UK fans will recognize Reet petite (a number one UK hit) and two other major UK hits, I get the sweetest feeling and Your love has lifted me higher and higher (a song that has been covered by many other singers including Dolly Parton and Rita Coolidge). All these songs had been huge American hits for Jackie in the fifties and sixties.

Among Jackie's other American hits, this collection includes Lonely teardrops, That's why I love you so, Night, To be loved, I'll be satisfied, Whispers getting louder and A woman a lover a friend.

It is amazing that Jackie made little impact in the UK during his lifetime but, helped by the Commodores' tribute song (Nightshift) and some TV commercials, he has gained a measure of posthumous recognition.

This collection provides an excellent introduction to Jackie's music including all the tracks that really matter.

Jackie Wilson could really work a crowd; after the height of his career, he was doing just that on stage at a Dick Clark oldies show, when he was stricken, his brain was oxygen-deprived and he spent his last years in a bed. Before that, Jackie gave us some heartfelt music, some hits bigger than others. This CD contains all you will need to know Jackie Wilson, the classic "Lonely Teardrops", "Doggin' Around" (overlooked in some conservative markets for its flipside "Night") "Talk that Talk" and the latter day "Higher and Higher". These are the hits. Enjoy them.

Usually you'll hear a dj on the radio at some sound-a-like Oldies station say that the great Jackie Wilson never scored a #1 hit-but what irks me is the fact they refuse to-or are just so darn ignorant-to clarify that remark. It is a cruel and horrible disrespect to the memory of Mr.Wilson not to the state the facts correctly. Mr.Wilson did indeed have a number 1 hit in his career- in fact a total of 6 of them. Those 6 were "Lonely Teardrops", "You Better Know It", "Doggin Around" also an RIAA certified million seller, " A Woman,A Lover,A Friend", "Baby Workout", and "Your Love Keeps Lifting Me Higher&Higher in 1967. These 6 songs were #1 smashes on Billboards R&B chart.Do dj's think that Mr.Wilson somehow thought less of his #1 R&B hit than if it had gone #1 on the pop charts? I beg to differ- I'm sure he was just as proud and excited to hear the news that his song had topped the R&B chart.You see, it doesn't and should not matter that this wrong information is being puked out relentlessly on so called "Pop" Oldies stations-no,the tragedy comes when the dj does not clarify the #1 statement and convinces the listening public that the artist never-ever had a #1 in his life on any chart-and dj's I gotta tell ya-no matter how you sugarcoat it- that's dead wrong.Do "Pop" Oldies dj's arrogantly assume only "Pop' Oldies listeners listen to their station and R&B and Soul Oldies listeners never listen ? Come, all you who think you can sing. Listen to THE master of the vocal art. This is a great collection of most of the US hits of Jackie Wilson. Superbly remastered, superbly sung - BUY IT! You will need other CDs once you hear Jackie's un-real pipes, but this CD from Brunswick is a great start. Many of his greatest performances are tucked away on albums - GO SEEK! But as a starter this is a beauty of a CD with excellent liner notes.

A Great Collection From One Of The Most Soul-Stirring Voices Of All Time!!.......2007-03-20

Man, when I think of Jackie Wilson, a.k.a. Mr. Excitement,
my mind goes all the way back to those far away summers
at my grandparents house in the early 70's, when a very
musical young 8/9 yr old kid (myself) discovered a treasure
trove of old 45's, 78's, and albums that dated all the way
back to the mid 40's & down through the 50's and 60's
that once belonged to my mother, aunts and
uncles when they were teenagers!
They were kept in the large drawers of the two end tables that
flanked my grandparents old wood encased "hi-fi", which by
that time, there sat on top of it a then state-of-the-art
stereo system complete with an 8 track player!
(Ha!!--those were the days!)

Anywayz, everybody from Louis Jordan to Big Maybelle to
Laverne Baker to The Flamingos, Little Richard, Sam Cooke,
early James Brown, Ray Charles, etc. was in that drawer,
and I could go on and on!
But there was this one record called "Danny Boy" by an artist
named Jackie Wilson, that went straight to the core of me!
This man's voice was the purest, most soaring, most dexterious,
most soulful & beautiful voice that I'd ever heard in my life
to that point!--This man was SANGIN'---not just singing!

I think I played that song, along with "Your Love Keeps
Liftin' Me Higher" and "Your Whispers Gettin' Louder"
about 25 times a piece that day!
And as the years went on, I learned more and more about this man
who they say the ladies used to swoon over and the guys
wanted to be like!
In addition to his great vocal gifts, Jackie Wilson was also one
of the greatest performers, second only to the late great
James Brown himself, for absolutely shaking a concert
hall to it's very foundation!
Jackie was a bad man, and I mean that in a good way!

My aunt told me of the time when she once saw Jackie Wilson,
Sam Cooke and James Brown & The Famous Flames all on the same bill!
--Man, was I jealous!--If I had only been born 20yrs earlier!
For me, that would've been sensory overload!--
But to their generation, that was just three of the
hottest kats going at that time!
This compilation is a very good one and well worth the money!
Jackie could have sung opera if he'd wanted to!

Jackie WIlson always put something down in the Studio with His Vocals. you have to admire his phrasing&Tone. you understand his impact on Elvis Presley&Michael Jackson amongest others who felt the soulful&Smooth delievery from Jackie Wilson. He was so versatile&truly a one of a kind Artist.the biggest mystery is why he was never signed directly to Motown Records?? imagine his voice on some of those Motown Classics in the mid to late 60's??? His Influence is felt over so many Artists past&present. a must have collection.

Jackie Wilson just may have been the greatest male singer/performer over the past fifty years and was loved by many including Elvis (who found his voice totally awesome) and Michael Jackson plus Jackie was given the title "Mr. Excitement" due to his incredibly great voice and amazing stage presence which always tore the house down!!!
Jackie Wilson shot to fame in the same era as Elvis and his career should have matched but due to poor management sadly this was not to be. Early classic hits composed by Berry Gordy such as "Lonely Teardrops" made money for Gordy and a Superstar out of Jackie but it was strange that Jackie Wilson would never be signed to Motown Records which was likely launched from the money made from Jackie's early Gordy composed hits...this was a real lost opportunity as Jackie would have blown the top off of that little Detroit Studio and would have easily become Motown Records brightest male Superstar and given Jackie Wilson the extraordinary career that his amazing once-in-a-lifetime talent warranted. Jackie Wilson just may have been the greatest singer and performer over the past fifty years...Elvis was crazy about him and he inspired many greats such as Michael Jackson and Al Green but nobody ever quite had the tremendous power and the glorious tones that made up the magnificent voice of Jackie Wilson!!! Early hits produced and written by Barry Gordy were the building blocks of Motown but "Lonely Teardrops" clearly shows that as many greats as Motown produced none came close to Jackie and it is sad that Jackie was never signed to Motown because in a way he started it!!! Thankfully after Gordy, great records and many classic recordings such as "A Woman, A Lover, A Friend", "Doggin' Around", "Night", "(You Were Made For) All My Love", "Baby Workout", "No Pity (In The Naked City)", "Whispers (Gittin' Louder)", "Your Love Keeps Lifting Me Higher", "I Get The Sweetest Feeling", "Just Call My Name", and others continued and it is a long and totally awesome list filled with lots of variety...listen to the definitive version of "For Once In My Life" then be blown away by the beauty of "Danny Boy" then experience the brilliant pathos of "Even When You Cry with Count Basie and know true musical once-in-a-lifetime genius. To the end Jackie Wilson made classics that are timeless in their appeal for those who love and appreciate the finest in vocal artists...a true classic legend and this is the collection of his classics to savor and enjoy for years to come...Bravo Jackie and we love and miss you!!!

Jackie Wilson Was One Of A Kind.......2005-07-28

Jackie Wilson was one of the most amazing vocalists I have ever heard. His voice was truly a gift from God. I only gave these recordings 3 stars because I don't like most of the 3rd cd as much as the 1rst two cds. The third cd contains his later material. I like his earlier work better. Although the 3rd cd does contain the best version of "Danny Boy" I have ever heard. Jackie could do almost anything with his voice. He occasionally sounded like Elvis, as he does on the song "Reet Petite". At other times he sounds like an opera singer, like on the songs "Night" and "My Empty Arms". This boxed set also contains my favorite version of the standard "Stormy Weather". There was simply no one like him. If I had lived in the 1950s, this is the one performer I would loved to have seen live. If I were rating this boxed set on vocals alone I would give it 5 stars. I would always give Jackie 5 stars for vocals. Young people who think that stars of today such as Britney Spears, Shania Twain, Janet Jackson, ect. can sing should listen to this boxed set. This was a real singer with true talent. This set is worth getting for the vocals alone. Especially if you have never heard these vocals before.

Now the review: When I saw this in my local music store, I bought it without hesistation. Unlike other compilations, this does not skip over the middle part of his soul years ( The Soul Years 1966-1975 from Brunswick Records was not bad, but I felt a handful of songs were left out). Edsel Records does a very good job with their re-issues and this is not an exception. Detailed annotation, passionate liner notes and a smooth sound will keep you satisfied.

This recording has only 16 tracks. The other reviewers didn't do their research and opt to buy the 24 track recording "The Very Best of Jackie Wilson" on Ace records. Get that recording, not this one.

Jackie Wilson - They Didn't Call Him Mr. Excitement for Nothing!.......2005-10-27

Jackie Wilson was referred to as "Mr. Excitement," in his heyday. No one could really compare with his soulful style, incredible vocals and ground-breaking moves which many have copied, but failed to execute as smoothly as he did.

This collection of his greatest hits is fun from the moment you put it on. I love Lonely Teardrops, Reet Petite, That's Why I Love You So for the electricity they generate and the soaring vocals.

Jackie also shows off his classical vocal training on Night and Danny Boy which are formidable and memorable.

The collection closes out with some of his last hits such as "Higher and Higher," which has been covered by just about everyone, but no one even comes close to capturing the same excitement and energy that Jackie creates on this track.

Tragically, Jackie's incredible career was cut short, but we can all remember him and his music with this great collection...It does not disappoint and shows that Jackie Wilson was one of the original innovator of Soul and paved the way for James Brown, Marvyn Gaye, Al Green and all the rest!

I have my boys ages 4, 2, and 8 months watching Jackie Wilson films. I want them to see a REAL stage performer in action. No special lighting and smoke to make him look like he's something he isnt. My four year old has his splits down. My two year old his songs. ( can we say future stars?) Jackie Wilson was dynamite with a side of TNT and a big helping of nitroglycerin. His voice sets my very soul on fire. I would recommend you buy this cd and anything else with him on it, You will NOT be disappointed.

The Original Soul Tenor.......2004-09-30

I am a life-long soul musicologist/singer and alongside the immortal Sam Cooke, I have always been a great fan of Jackie Wilson. This CD offers all of his hits and most moving renditions of his most enduring recordings. I've read many of the reviews about this and other Jackie Wilson compilations and it strikes me as odd that no one has made any mention of the fact that, aside from being a spectacular performer and vocalist, Jackie was perhaps the only soul singer of his time...or any time who had the vocal compass of a classically trained tenor. Had his career not been rooted in the racially repressed 50's & 60's, he may well have enjoyed the success of a Mario Lanza. Granted, Jackie's voice was untrained but with some work he could well have enjoyed success in both the Soul and Classical field, a harbinger of today's "Popera" genre, again not unlike the great Mario Lanza. Jackie Wilson's remains one of the greatest tenor voices ever heard and he will forever be the original Soul Tenor.

I always put people right when they go on about Michael Jackson. I tell them about Jackie Wilson and how Jackie is so far greater in all areas it's not even funny. They never believe me until I show them Jackie on DVD or CD. THEN, they believe me! This is another wonderful compilation on the great man and another excellent introduction - but remember - it is only an introduction, GO BUY SOME MORE! More excellent liner notes and great CD production. A word to Brunswick - release the unreleased and alternate takes by Jackie please!!

The original LP 'Manufacturers Of Soul' has 11 tracks but this CD leaves 1 track from its production. I suggest you search for the Edsel 2for1 CD - Shake A Hand + Manufacturers Of Soul where you will find this extra track. This is the only sore point about this CD. Even though it is a budget price, the sound quality is A1. The songs are performed by the great Basie and his band and Jackie adds his own style to well-known hits. Jackie has gone down as saying how he enjoyed working with Basie - and it shows. Jackie adds zest to vocals on Stevie Wonder tracks where Stevie just can't compete. Wanna have a ball? Well buy this CD if you don't mind not having the missing track 'Even When You Cry.'

Cheap but Highly Effective CD.......2002-08-03

I recently picked up this CD for about $6.98 knowing a little of what was on it. Knowing that you can never really go wrong with Jackie Wilson, I was still surprised of how much this CD cooks. Jackie's versions of 'Uptight (everything's alright)' 'I was Made to Love Her' 'Funky Broadway' and 'In The Midnight Hour', and 'Chain Gang' are all arranged by Count Basie's Big band. Think of the Black Elvis on stage in Vegas with really good material to work with. I am still grooving to this one.
