Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

Rock Solid.......2007-06-14

Though all of these songs appear (remastered at that) on First Rays of the New Rising Sun, I prefer this album and wish it was still in print. Rays (like the older out of print Voodoo Soup) is filled with great songs, but the sound is all over the place with different line-ups and studio work.

This album was almost completely made of up songs perfored by the Hendrix-Mitchell-Cox trio (with guest Steve Winwood on I believe, Ezy Rider) and as such this feels like a complete album. It sounds like the songs were meant to be a single album. Those compilations feel like compilations.

Though I've rarely heard any of these songs on the radio, nearly every one of them is great. In From the Storm, Freedom and Ezy Rider are three of his strongest most straight forward rockers. His best collection of straight ahead rocks songs since Experienced. Plus the great ballad Drifting and the amazing Angel. (Fiona Apple closed her shows in 97 with a gorgeous version of Angel. Very awesome)

You might not be familiar with the songs when you buy this, but you will wonder why you weren't more familiar with this. Though I'm sure this was compiled from various studio sessions, the end result sounds more like a signle tight band than even Band of Gypsys did.

A final note, I'm basing this review off of my old Reprise label CD of this album which has the song listing above and not the song listing mentioned by Kurt Leith in his review (Beginning, Izabella and Highway Chile are not on this). Also, other than the front and rear cover, I've never seen the artwork shown above. Did MCA rerelease this before Experience Hendrix deleted the title? Or is that the Track gatefold import?

Another underrated Hendrix album..........2006-12-21

This album is worth purchasing just for "Angel", let alone other stellar tracks like "Drifting" and "My Friend".

"Angel" is simply the most beautiful song I've ever heard...

Brilliant, A Must Have For Jimi Fans!!!!!!!.......2006-06-30

"The Cry Of Love" was the first of the posthumous releases in the Jimi Hendrix catalog and probably the best as it collected most of the studio tracks that were either completed or very near completion before Hendrix died. Some of these tunes, like "Angel" and "Ezy Rider," have become well-known pieces in the Hendrix canon, but they sit alongside lesser-known gems like "Night Bird Flying" and the Dylanesque "My Friend." As we all know by now, Jimi Hendrix left behind more unreleased material than just about any other rock artist. Some tracks have rated as all-time classics ("Angel," "Drifting," etc.), while other highlights that appear on "The Cry Of Love" CD include "Beginning" (which contains a riff almost identical to the Stones' "Bitch"), "Highway Chile," and "Izabella," a track premiered on a Dick Cavett TV show a year before Jimi's untimely death. If you're a newcomer to Hendrix, don't start here, but if you're a serious Jimi fan searching for some interesting obscurities, "The Cry Of Love" CD is definitely worth the price if you can find it. Jimi Hendrix was unable to read or write music, so he recorded extensively in the studio-this explains why there are so many different versions of his songs that have been released at one time or another-and many of these different versions are so strikingly different that they are practically unrecognizable aside from sharing the same title. And though the Hendrix family has released "First Rays Of The New Rising Sun" & "South Saturn Delta", albums meant to be the definitive last word, they don't adequately replace the "Cry Of Love", "War Heroes", "Midnight Lightning" or "Crash Landing" CDs. As a matter of fact, many songs included on these out of print discs are otherwise unavailable on CD and that's a shame. So, again, I recommend grabbing this disc as well as the others I've mentioned here if you are lucky enough to find them available as they have been permanently deleted. Good luck!!

Another outstanding album.......2005-12-10

The Cry of Love was released after Jimi's death.
It shows a new direction for him. A direction I wish he could have persued further.
Some of my absolute favorite Hendrix songs appear on this CD
Among the songs are. Freedom which opens the album in style.
Drifting is a personal favorite of mine. Drifting is slowed down and in the the vain of Little Wing.
Easy Rider picks up the tempo.
Angel which is a ballad appears next and to me is one of his very finest moments on record.
I would buy the entire CD just for Angel
In From the Storm is another great rocker and shows Jimi in top form.
The Cry of Love was his last but not necesarily his least.
One of the top albums of Jimi's career and a must for any Hendrix fan.

Ahead of his time!.......2005-05-17

I first heard this in 1972, I still have the vinyl. The use of studio mixing and effects were way ahead of Jimis' time. The sound was heavy, psychedelic, rhythmic, musically sound. In my opinion this was his best effort. There would have been greater things to come. In from the storm AWESOME! Night bird flyin' great licks. EZ ryder, freedom, come on !!! This must have been a trip to be in the studio and listening to how all the tracks were put together. This album has just never gotten old for me.

hymns we sang in church.......2003-02-16

i grew up in a traditional presbyterian church that had a pipe organ. i wanted a cd of many of the hymns that we sang in church sung by a choir and accompanied by a pipe organ. this cd fulfilled my wishes perfectly. the hymns are performed in a very straight-forward fashion with no show-boating or excess flourishes which is exactly what i wanted. this is not gospel music but what i refer to as liturgical music to indicate that it is religious music but not gospel music. i would give it 5 stars but there is a slight hiss. other than that the recording quality is very good.

The young James Hunter's LP debut from 1986, just goes to show that he was always a great singer - a natural. Released under the pseudonym of Howlin' Wilf & The Vee-Jays, this is the first time it has been released on CD. Hunter recorded his first solo album for Ace in 1996 - "Believe What I Say" (CDCHD 636). The album featured a guest appearance by Van Morrison and Hunter has regularly appeared with Van on stage. Lost Night .......2007-04-16

talk about a lost night collection. This is a beauty from back in the days of early soul, late RnB, with plenty of nodding to the Drifters and Sam Cooke, but, really, is there really any need to take a shot at Janis Joplin, who not only had the good taste to revive the forgotten Garnett Mims classic "Cry Baby" but also sang the devil out of it with just as much, if not more, heart and soul as the man himself. God bless both of them.

Garnet Mimms & the Enchanters are great. Sounds alot like old Solomon Burke, same type of songs, but different voice. Great back up singers, similar to the Raylettes or the Ikettes. Every song is a winner. Once yoo hear the original version of Cry Baby, you'll never want to hear the Janis Joplin vesion again.

Best music ever recorded since the big bang.......1998-09-08

Aah yeah ..., how can one mortal soul express desperation, panic, joy and excessive beauty by means of his voice? What mechanism is triggered that singing isn't singing anymore but became sound by itself, coming from somewhere dark, deep and unknown, channeled through the physical body of a man who goes by the name of Garnet Mimms? How is it possible that my girlfriend and me (other race, other continent, other language, other generation) have goosepimples and tears in our eyes every single time we play this CD (about 500 times a year)? Because this CD contains music from the man with the most beautiful voice since the excistence of our galaxy. Cry Baby, One Girl, Wanting You, For Your Precious Love and all the other sacred songs on this peace of art are sung with such incredible intensity that it will leave everybody living or deceased with goosepimples. This CD goes through the barriers of every obstacle known to mankind. Put this on, and you've got SOUL. In my humble opinion, the deepest, the most desperate, the most sincere, the most honest, the most sacred, the soil, the earth, the core feeling that has makes live worth living on this planet. This complete 12-disc survey of The Psalms of David from St. Paul's Cathedral is both a remarkable historical record of Anglican chant at its finest and an astonishing musical experience. Contained here are all 150 psalms in their traditional English garb from the 1549 Book of Common Prayer, with revised or entirely new musical settings as published in The New St. Paul's Cathedral Psalter, edited by the choir's musical director John Scott, itself a revision of the 1875 Cathedral Psalter. As such, these recordings represent the very backbone of the Anglican liturgy, but even a casual listener will be in no doubt that they also offer music that is both contemplative and richly varied when removed from its liturgical context.

The art of "pointing"--or setting--psalm texts has been essayed by many English composers, from William Croft through the Wesleys and William Boyce in earlier times to the great flowering in the late 19th century under Stainer and Barnby, with further contributions from Parry, Stanford, Elgar, Howells, and a host of choirmasters and organists, including Sir David Willcocks and John Scott himself. All are represented here. Recorded throughout in the vast acoustic of their cathedral, the St. Paul's choristers enunciate the words precisely, backed by inventive though unobtrusive organ accompaniment. Taken individually, it's possible to isolate moments when the choir seem to drag their feet or fail to give due weight to the words (Psalm 125, "They that put their trust in the Lord," seems far too subdued, for example), and the massive Psalm 119 is awkwardly split across discs 10 and 11, but overall this set is nothing less than a document of invaluable cultural and musical significance. --Mark Walker

Brilliant Recordings.......2007-06-11

In our view the changes in pointing, and excellent selection of chants, give deeper meanings to the Psalms than those achieved in the "standard?" Parish Psalter.

We found great Spirituality and a wonderful sense of Worship whilst listening to this set. This is often sacrificed for brilliance of musical performance in other recordings.

Unfortunately the "St.Paul's Psalter" is not available (June 2007) but we are told that a new print run may happen within 12 months. This would be a most valuable companion to the recordings when and if it becomes available.

This grand undertaking deserves high praise, and I'm struck, listening to chant after chant, how much Anglican chant as it used to be until the changes of the 70s was one of the great Victorian contributions to English life and art. For anyone who wants to hear almost the entire repertoire of Anglican chant deployed in singing the whole book of Psalms, this is an unrivalled source. It is wonderful, too, to hear the Coverdale translation: you realize what the churches have lost by abandoning the proper & regular singing of the Psalms. So one is immensely grateful to Hyperion for putting out this recording. It's not perfect, though.

The rhythmic pacing, though a little slow for my taste, is steady and sensitive, the diction clear, and the organ accompaniment superb (Providing an expressive accompaniment to a choir singing in 4-part free rhythm, and improvising descants to the melody at the same time, isn't easy). And of course there's the cavernous acoustic of St. Paul's, very impressive in the more thunderous psalms. Unfortunately, though, the "forward" style favored for the St. Paul's boys produces a sound that's unpleasantly chesty in the lower registers and reedy in the higher ones. The poorly integrated choral sound caused by this kind of voice-production can be downright unpleasant for anyone used to, or trained in, the classic English choral style. In fact, one has to wonder why this choir was chosen for such a huge project: even allowing for the near-universal decline in standards of vocal training for boys in England, better sounds than this can still be heard.

What can you say?.......2003-01-03

I almost hate to criticize this terrific thing. After all, where else can you get all 150 Psalms in a single collection sung by one of the world's great choirs?

How much do I like it? I bought it *twice*. I originally bought all the CDs separately, before they came out with a single boxed set. They were stolen from my car (and, God willing, maybe they converted some poor thief to Anglican Cathedral Music and got him into church). After they were stolen, I immediately bought them again.

One of the great pleasures of life is listening to the Morning and Evening Psalms while driving to and from work, and making listening a regular feature of Morning and Evening Prayer.

So what's the criticism? The sound is a bit muddy, so the words can be rather difficult to understand without reading along (which is a real problem when driving), and personally, I prefer the Psalter from the 1979 BCP instead of the old one, from the Great Bible. But that's unreasonable. They ARE a British choir after all. Those are the only criticisms.

Anyhow, if you have a taste for choral cathedral music, this is genuinely indispensible. St. Paul's has given the world a great blessing.

Two classic albums back to back with sleeve notes by the late and sadly-missed Dave Godin, whose typically tortured and passionate syntax graces this belated reissue. From the spinetingling 'Cry baby', to the before-its-time metrosexual 'It was easier to hurt her', the latin-tinged mariachi trumpet-laden 'Look Away' and the ripsnorting northern stomper 'Looking for You' - this is a gem of a CD. It reminds us how much Garnett Mimms meant to the early days of Soul, not least in Britain where he toured a couple of times - and how much the less famous early to mid sixties singers achieved for posterity, not to mention writers and arrangers of the calibre of Bert Berns and Jerry Ragovoy. More please!

Let's hope that more artists such as Garnett Mimms have their material transferred over to compact disc; it would be a shame for music like this to be lost because their material is not widely enough known to turn a profit for record companies. This compilation covers two releases that speak not only as the individual wonders it contains, but also almost as a musical history of the artist. If you can listen to "As long as I have you" and not get chills, you have no soul. The newly remastered sound is rich and clean throughout. The packaging is kind of drab, but the liner notes are good. What really matters with this release is the material. It could come in a clear plastic bag on a plain cd, and it would still be the most colorful album I own.
