Great jazz sound with an upbeat, funky groove on every track. Bona Fide, on this album, reminds me at times of the funkier side of Gregg Karukas & Bob James on keybords. On guitar, Bona Fide has a vey unique sound; somewhere between Russ Freeman, Brian Tarquin, and Peter White. The bass sounds lot like Gerald Veasely. Thankfully, Bona Fide does NOT go overboard with progammed percussion, which I think has been the worst "innovation" in Jazz over the past 10-20 years. If you like upbeat, progressive jazz with a funky groove to it, you will love this album.

If you like a mellow funky groove you will like this CD. Great for cruisin' in the car. Summer's coming this will sound good playing in your ride.

The Boys Are Back!.......2006-03-02

I was wondering how Bona Fide was going to follow up the success of their two previous albums. I needn't have worried, Soul Lounge is an awesome cd. These guys are just great musicians and composers.

Lots of energy and bass heavy riffs like Royal Function, but a somewhat more reflective mood overall. They even work in some new age synths in a couple places. If you're someone who likes cruising through the city at night, Soul Lounge is music that'll sweeten the drive for you.

This is just a killer jazz album. Loads of funky riffs, cool ivories and rock crushing bass grooves. Crank up the sub-woofer and watch your glass dance on the coffee table. One of the smarter buys I've ever made. Can't recommend it enough.

I bought this CD after hearing X-ray Hip on the radio - I was thankful that the announcer called out the name of the group though it took a bit of luck to search for "Bona Fide" instead of "Bonafide". When buying, I thought that X-ray Hip was worth the price alone and most likely the group that created it had to be good.

The earlier reviewers are very astute - this is pure, beautiful, fun, lively MUSIC first and jazz/funk etc second - no gimmicks, pretentious, self-important show-off BS here - only what the composers felt made sense musically and tasteful.

The piano, the arrangments are all lush, deep, rich, elegant -gorgeous. The saxophone - where used - is equally tasteful - it is played the way it is meant to be - not the irritating way that seems to be on radio all the time of late. This is one serious group and one serious set of composers - I've heard a wide range of music - this ranks among the very best - truly a great find! I hope they can continue in this vein for a while before the inspiration dries-up.

The pluses are many - lots of music here - it may take you a while to appreciate all of it - but well worth it.

My feeling is that they could have done a better job of ordering (sequencing) the numbers - but that's one nit.

Not Bona Fide.......2004-09-26

The reviewer who said "Too Much Sax" got it right - the others have missed the mark.

Any resemblance to the previous excellent CD "Royal Function" is purely coincidental - the group seems to have changed its core approach - they have traded in their million $ piano and keyboard sound for a cheapskate shrill saxophone sound. why they chose to do this - the only explanation that I can suggest - is they sold out to "commercialism".

This CD does not come close to their outstanding "Royal Function" CD. If they could "revert" back to their lush, gorgeous, piano sound - they could do wonders.

Overall, a very disappointed fan. Hope they can put their "Bona Fide Horns" on the back-bench and put their superstar piano/xylophone/keyboards front and center where they belong.

I went to see the Bona Fide Boys in Los Angeles last
year and took a group of jazz buffs for dinner. Thanks
to our local Jazz station "The Wave"- who sponsored the evening.
We loved every minute. Kevin Levi shines and all the
guys project a love of the music they are playing. I bought
20 cc of this disc and left them with every lounge manager
in Las Vegas. Buy this disc ladies - you can exercise to
the beat..... or boogie cheek to cheek..

It is about time we on the US scene got a new infusion of jazz, funk combo. I heard Nevermore and bought the CD. Rarely do I do this. I have not been dissapointed. This is music to only to calm the primal beast, but to set him/her to a movin!

Like a good thing, I just cannot get enough of the cuts on this masterpiece! And listening to "Nevermore" is a piano, saxy, and southern guitar-licken good tinged ride....truly Bona Fide!

Bona Fide is out of Baltimore and I originally bought The Poe House cd because of the remake of Jill Scott's It's Love, but I have to say I enjoyed the entire cd and because each of the tracks has a Baltimore theme, found the cd to be a great keepsake.

Expecting some things to be similar to the first album, I was a little disappointed upon listening through this album. Almost every track had some kind of saxaphone in it. Sounded more jazzy and not as grooving or funkified as the first. No one song really stood out to me, and in a way it all kind of became a little redundant after awhile...because of too much sax. Hopefully thier next venture will get some of the groove back, with less sax.

This cd is one of my all time favorites! The only problem is- I lost my copy and can't find a replacement anywhere! None of the stores have it, it's out of stock here and I can't even download the sonuvabitch because no one has any copies on Kazaa!! I'm extremely irritated because any music lover can understand me when I say- when you have a jones to listen to a certain cd or song- it doesn't go away until you hear it. I've been waiting 5 years!!! HELP!

it is easy to compare willie max with a string of other girl groups who have broken in the past couple of years. allure, total, destiny's child. unlike allure, however, willie max has not demonstrated an ability to really wail. unlike, total, their public image in neither brash enough nor defined enough to hold public interest. and unlike destiny's child, willie max's _bona fide_ does not have a break-away hit on par with "no, no, no". what willie max does have is harmony that could only be acheived by spending large quantities of time together (in this case, having been raised together, as sister) and potential, with the proper material, to come back strong on their next release. willie max posses a strong understanding of each of their own vocal abilities, as well as those of their group mates; this is a precious commodity which, with the proper guidance, could transform them into the next pointer sisters. at this point, however, you r&b girl group dollar would be better spent on 4KaST's _any weather_.

THESE GUYS ARE GREAT!!.......2007-05-07

If you like bluegrass music,you'll love the Gibson Brothers. If you don't like bluegrass music, there is a good chance you will like these guys. Beautiful execution of the music, great choice of songs, great songwriting: what more can you ask. They have three albums on Sugar Hill Records. All are excellent. Give them a listen!

It took me two or three listens.........2005-09-24

...but now I love it. First time I listened to the CD, I hated it and wondered what the heck I'd bought. I must not have been paying attention! Really a pleasing group with good harmonies and pickers.

Their sister joins them on one song 'The Lighthouse' prominently and I believe it's her in the background on others. A fair singer herself, she fits in the 'allowed to waver and warble a bit' category of bluegrass singers. Which is JUST fine!

While perhaps not to the caliber of some other bluegrass musicians, this album contains some really enjoyable original and traditional melodies. 'Norma', 'Beautiful Brown Eyes', and 'Vern's Guitar' are my favorites. 'Vern's Guitar gets me crying each and every time. *dabs eyes*

It's worth checking out, definetly.

Best of the CA Grass Valley Fest (2004).......2004-07-12

Listening to the Gibson Brothers on stage in the beautiful Grass Valley setting was good enough. But who would expect the Bona Fide CD to stand up to Live and Beautiful? It does. The Gibson Brothers are a powerful combination of high quality musicians with a great feel for their music. The songs are mostly written by them. The instrumetation is expert, driving and well fitted. I particularly like the banjo (but I play one ) and impressed by the base.
The songs on this CD are ALL top notch. Normally, CD's contain a couple of good songs and the rest aren't up to snuff. But with Bona Fide, I listen from front to back everytime. This said, don't miss "Railroad Line" and "Vern's Guitar" which bring shivers to me.
I also had the pleasure of chatting with the group for an hour or so, discussing everything from Yosemite to Bears. Really nice, thoughful and articulate guys. This is a 10 star CD. (PS I only review CD's that are 5 or higher...there are just too many of the others)

I listen to a lot of music & I have to say this is one of the best cds I've listened to, simply awesome. These guys are able to write great new bluegrass songs, not to mention doing great covers at their live shows. If you like bluegrass music,beautiful melodies & great voices don't pass on this wonderful cd. Can't wait for their new cd. Keep up the great jobs guys!

This is a great CD. These guys manage to write material that respects (and reeks of) traditional bluegrass, without falling into tired cliches or simple, cheesy lyrics. No lazy writing here. Great picking and singing too. Very impressive.

It All Started With A Trip To The Flea Market.......2006-01-04

One fall Sunday morning in 1997 I visited one of my favorite junk collecting haunts, The North Point Flea Market in Dundalk, MD. A middle aged African American gentleman had a stall with an assortment of old junk computers and various electronics and piles of records haphazardly thrown in crates, some dusty and not even in sleeves, mostly 70's and 80's soul, R&B, and disco. In the middle of this crate of records sat a sealed pristine album with a black and white photo on the cover of three long haired thugs who looked like they would stomp a high school geek's trig homework, rip up his Star Wars trading cards and shove amphetamines down his throat, all posing in the ruins of a city rowhouse. I recognized the name George Brigman; I remembered two things about him, his 1985 Silent Bones EP
that I saw a guy, who I later found out was Rick Noll of Bona Fide Records fame, hawking at a record show when it was first released , and a story Paul Cachola, the drummer from my old band Blunt Force Trauma, had told me about seeing this guy's band rehearse around the corner from his house and a song they played called "I Can Hear The Ants Dancin'", inspired by watching ants vibrating on a basement shelf due to the the volume of their playing in a druggy haze. However I was unaware that George Brigman had released anything as far back as 1975, the date on the back of this LP I was holding.

I paid one dollar for the album, took it home and put it on the turntable. Wow, what noisy vinyl. The first phase shifted guitar riff of the title cut blasted through my speakers. The vocals kicked in, poorly recorded and phasey sounding, like one too many overdubs. The drumming reminded me of Black Sabbath, the vocals were like Iggy Pop. The whole thing sounded like it was recorded in a cave on a cassette deck. The next cut "DMT" was even darker, again with Iggy like vocals straight out of the book of Funhouse. I said man this is recorded like crap, but boy are there some cool ideas here. I didn't know anyone in Baltimore was making this kind of music in 1975 amongst the wasteland of commercial rock and disco cover band hell!!! I listened to "DMT" some more thinking ,"is that a harmonica off in a distant bathroom or some poor animal dying in a tarpit in the stone age".

The album played on,"Don't Bother Me", was more traditional 60's garage with a sneering Mick Jagger like vocal, and was followed by a spooky, reverby ballad with slide guitar, "Schoolgirl". Side one ended with a murky blues rocker "I've Got To Know", with excellent slide guitar playing.

I flipped it over and the crackly vinyl was almost as loud as the opening riff of "I Feel Alright" (no, not The Damned's '77 remake of Iggy's "1970", but an original song, same title two years earlier).A quiet almost jazzy instrumental with congas, "T.S" followed (T.S. McPhee I thought?, naw this is Stoogeaphilia all the way on this disc, is he a Groundhogs fan ? It turns out yes!). Another quieter tune, "Worrying" an introspective sounding ballad follows. Then comes maybe the weirdest track on the album, the very trippy "It's Misery". What is he saying beneath the fuzztone guitar riff and off kilter rhythm that sounds like the drummer is having a hard time playing ? Then a loose blues tune,"I'm Married Too",sung by someone else, slightly off key, very Replacements like(circa Hootenanny LP era)ends the album.

It was very(unbelievably !)lo-fi. How could anyone have released a recording this raw ? I was fascinated and listened to it three more times completely before band practice. At the bar after rehearsal, it was all I could talk about. I was hooked. This record was fascinating, but not in a pretty way. It was like the bathroom mold you were afraid of cleaning but had to keep looking at. Or was it like one of those old Blind Lemon Jefferson blues 78's from the 20's ? Didn't matter, I was hooked . I needed to find out more about Jungle Rot and the genius who made it.

While surfing the web in 2000, I stumble upon a review of the Colorsound Wah pedal written by who ???? George Brigman???
There is an e-mail address; hoping it is still valid I try to
contact him, asking "are you the same guy who made Jungle Rot?
Next day I get a response with his phone number. I call, we hook up at his house, we start recording, about 40 songs in a year or so.
We are almost ready to release this new material five years later.
Look for it!!! It kicks!!! It's the best he's ever done. Jungle Rot is out on CD officially for the first time with bonus tracks recorded by George's Hogwash band in 1976 !

Congrats on stumbling upon George Brigman's legendary DYI 1974 fuzz fried cult classic. You are either lost or a seriously informed collector.

For those who don't know what this is, it's pure Grunge well before phrase was coined. Long before the advent of acts like Dinosaur Jr. or Nirvana. Here The Stooges meet low-fi Cream with a little Blue Cheer tossed in for good measure. The title track is a pure slab of teenage lust.A rank, hot urban summer night with an unforgettable riff. On the eerie, "School Girl" you don't know whether he's stoned in the back of the school bus dreaming about her, or simply left her for dead in some abandoned basement. Without a doubt, Brigman's growl brings a young Iggy Pop to mind. Only more sedated. What makes this stand apart from the Stooges is Brigman's self-taught originality. The end effect is an astonishingly vivid portrait of Nixon era urban decay buried beneath the stoned haze of apathy & boredom. The Breakfast (formerly Psychedelic Breakfast) is an incredibly talented trio of guitarist Tim Palmieri, bassist Ron Spears and drummer Adrian Tramontono. Studio albums are of top notch quality but there is no comparison to seeing a live show put on by The Breakfast. Bona Fide gives a glimse into the energy of a live show and the raw talent of Tim Palmieri. Any fan of rock and roll/funk rock needs to take a look at The Breakfast. Spread the word, these guys are the real deal!

Favorite stereo album.......2003-12-24

Of the jam rock scene, these guys are gaining progressively more recognition, and with good reason. A listen to anything on this album will reveal top-quality musicianship and talent on the part of all four members of the group. It is often said that a jam group plays best live, and this representation of the quartet shows them to be anything but slouches as they begin with the odd time signature-laden "Drunk Monk Bar," move through various shades of guitar monster Tim Palmieri's massive riffs and solos, before ending up in such exceptional jams as Escher's Etchings, Spunk, and Hot 'Lanta (an Allman Brothers cover, featuring perhaps some of the best work of guest guitarist Seth Yacavone). The cornerstone track on this album though is Rufus, an epic jam which plays around with the groups distinct reggae feel while again quickly returning to some of the craziest guitar slinging being practiced today. Hot album all around, with the exception that the vocals aren't up to the standard of the instrumental qualities. This album is excellent for cranking up on a good stereo, I can think of no jam album better for that purpose.

There's actually a fair amount of un-grassy material on here, but also a lot of gems such as tracks by the Lonesome Pine Fiddlers and the McPeak Brothers that'll knock your socks off. Also some later Lester Flatt tunes, from his early '70s RCA days, and some live tracks with Mac Wiseman. Kinda hodge-podgey, but worth checking out, especially since so much of this has been out of print for so long.
