2nd part of a great Live show.......2006-11-04
I was suprised that Polydor separated this Live concert into 2 LPs.
I was more suprised when they released it on CD and did they same!
Well they got it right anyway. The sound is great, crisp and thundering. Turn this one up!
They put some of the less well known Cream on this one: Deserted Cities of the Heart, Politician and Steppin' out. I suppose that's why Vol. 1 sold more. As a compliment they included the classics: White Room, (a scorching rendition), Tales of Brave Ulysses and Sunshine of Your Love. From the first song this one smokes. If you like Clapton and if you like to hear long versions of old songs, this one is for you!
Not on the level of Live Cream but still pretty good.......2006-10-18
Released in 1972, Live Cream Volume 2 was the second posthumous live album released after the supergroup announced their breakup in 1968. Apparently, the band was still missed as like their first live album, Live Cream, it would reach the Top 40 in the U.S. However, the difference between them is evident almost from the get go. While Live Cream showed the band at their magical jamming best, Volume 2 reins in the excitement as the live tracks stay close to the originals. That's not to say that it isn't a strong album as the excellent interplay between Jack Bruce, Ginger Baker, and Eric Clapton is still intact and the performances are still very strong. The opening track, "Deserted Cities of the Heart", is by far the most energetic song here as the band's performance sounds like a train that threatens to run off the tracks. Even though it clocks in at less than 5 minutes, the performance makes you look forward to the passion and experimentation that made the live disc of Wheels of Fire, Live Cream, and even the live songs on Goodbye so special. However, the band plays it straight for the next four tracks, particularly on "White Room" and "Politician." The album does redeem itself a little with Clapton's wah-wah solo on "Tales of Brave Ulysses" and the long closing jam on "Sunshine of Your Love." The closer "Steppin' Out" is not only Clapton's showcase but also the main reason to pick up the album. Easily one of their best live tracks, Clapton lets out a long bluesy solo for the first 4 minutes as Baker and Bruce change things up throughout. However, the best is yet to come. While Bruce takes a seat, Clapton lets out an a capella solo for around a minute before Baker slowly works his way in. As the track continues, Clapton's playing changes moods throughout while Baker's drumming provides the perfect accompaniment before reaching its dynamic end at the 13:38 mark. All told, while this is a fine live release, it's not quite on the level of their other live releases. However, if you can't enough of Cream, this won't disappoint you.
Subtract a star for Steppin' Out.......2006-02-03
Sorry, but it's true. Steppin' is a clever combination of long (nearly fourteen minutes) and boring (It loses steam about three minutes in). But once we get past that one minor gripe, this is actually a good album. They burn through Deserted Cities of the Heart, Tales of Brave Ulysses, Politician and Sunshine of Your Love like it's nobody's business and cut an enjoyable version of White Room (needs the cellos, though). Too bad Steppin' stretches for an eternity-and-a-half, the rest of the album is fine and highly recommended.
Not as good as it could've been, but hey, it's still Cream!!!!!!!!.......2005-12-17
Much like the first Live Cream album, this Volume 2 was released as a "quickie" album to milk Cream's ample fan base of their cash. That statement may sound a bit harsh; however, the music is DAMN good for being part of a rip-off album released without the consent of Eric, Jack and Ginger.
The album starts off very slowly, with the first three tracks coming from what could be construed as Cream's worst recorded concert performance: Oakland 10/4/68. That night was the group's first show in nearly four months and they hadn't had a decent rehearsal since June 1968. Most of the music from that concert is sub-par by Cream standards (especially the still-unreleased "Passing the Time" from that night) but better than many bands at their peak. "Deserted Cities" is out-of-tune and inferior to the WOF studio (it doesn't work as effectively without Bruce's cello lines), "White Room" isn't all that hot either, but "Politician" is definitely an improvement in terms of energy and technical precision, and though the orgy of soloing guitars of the WOF version is missed, this tune works very well live.
The next three tracks were recorded in March 1968 at the same Winterland shows that produced the live disc of WOF. The Winterland performances are Cream at their absolute peak, the polar opposite of the sub-par Oakland show. "Tales of Brave Ulysses" and "Sunshine of Your Love" are superlative, energetic performances and are among the best versions I have ever heard of these songs. The obvious highlight of the latter tune is the ending jam on the song's final A major chord, though it is rather short compared to other performances of the song (a 17 minute version with a 12 minute (!) ending coda is available on bootlegs).
Which brings me to "Stepping Out," the highlight of the entire album. At 13 minutes, it's definitely not for anyone with little or no patience, but this is certainly a great Eric performance. It's not the best performance of this Clapton solo piece (that would go to Brandeis), but it certainly is respectable and a welcome addition to the live Cream cannon.
Now, of course, there will always be gripes over this album, since it obviously, as stated before, was quickly thrown together with little regard to Cream fans. However, the excellent quality of these recordings must be cherished, since soundboard recordings of Cream in the '60s are a rarity and most fans like me have to listen to poorly-made, hissy audience tapes to hear Cream in their full live glory. Forget the 2005 reunited Cream and take a gander at this. It's well worth getting.
A Big Disappointment.......2005-08-02
Aside from the last track, "Steppin' Out," this disc really doesn't have much to offer. "Steppin' Out" is the only jam on the CD, and I really think that they could've done a better job putting this compilation together. I rate this CD mediocre at best, because Cream was so great live (or at least they were supposed to be) and I think that they did a terrible job of making an album that was supposed to be representative of their live performances.
For me, the biggest disappointment was "White Room," which is only 5 1/2 minutes long. I really wanted to hear a long jam. But oh well.
If it weren't for "Steppin' Out," I would want my money back.
As for my recommendation, I think that your money would be better spent somewhere else. You'll be paying 10 bucks (at least), and really, only one song is worth it. Buy something else.

big clapton fan.......2007-02-03
Clapton is one of the best guitar players. This has allot of extended versions of his hits and for a Clapton fan I do not see how you could not get this. A big problem for me that gets worse every time I listen ( I was hoping I could eventual ignore it and just listen to Clapton) is the rhythm section. This has got to be the worse drumming ever put on record, and it is mastered in a way that it is impossible to ignore. It's like water torture. (Also the price is 60 dollars?)
Eric's Best Band.......2006-03-03
Being a long time Clapton fan, I can say with subjective certainty that the Tusla backup band, as heard on this retrospective, was the best that ever stood behind the man. In many cases, he stands in the background while the rhythym section just cooks- "Little Wing" and "Badge" serving as notable examples. Terry is superb both as a rhythym and lead guitarist...never again, not with Albert Lee, not even with Mark Knopfler, would the interplay be THIS smooth, THIS breathtaking, THIS raw. Oldaker is reminiscent of Levon Helm or Gene Parsons, and leads that band charging through numbers with his perfect touch. Dick Sims, on organ, sounds incredible, with his playing hovering between the background and foreground, much like Clarence White's guitar playing in the Byrds. It's there, and it's perfect in every case. Same for Radle- by this time, Radle had been Eric's longest standing bassist and knew Clapton's habbits. Listen to how spotlessly he counters them. And Elliman and Levy provide perfect harmony.
In sum, Eric's best band and Eric's rawest and BEST playing. Never again would he reach these heights. Ever.

If you really love EC.......2005-07-10
This collection shows Eric at his best and his worst. These were days fueled by a lot of alcohol...and on some songs it shows. But for the most part this is a great collection of some of his live work in that era. Some of the jams are wonderful, "Badge" and "Eyesight." He's simply magic with the guitar. However, some, like "Crossroads," sound like he doesn't know which of the twelve blues bars he's supposed to be singing in (that was an unintentional pun.) Juxtapose this with "24 Nights" - this collection is a gritty, loose sound, while the latter is more of a clean, polished performance (that was an intentional pun). I love EC and hope he continues to release his live vault...no matter which of his phases it come from.
Eric at his best.......2005-06-22
Someone once told me that Eric is best listened to live and this set proves the point!
Of course there are a few dodgy tracks and yes, I agree, there should have been other tracks added and others omitted.
But!
This is the master at his best, it doesn't get any better than this.
Favourite tracks, too hard to say which are my favourites but there is some wonderful guitar playing on all tracks.
I have been an Eric fan since the Yardbirds and this CD set takes pride of place in my collection

For most of the 1970s, keyboardist Merl Saunders was Jerry Garcia's main musical foil away from his main band, allowing the Grateful Dead icon a chance to really broaden his horizons. Dates from 1973 at San Francisco's Keystone with bassist John Kahn and drummer Bill Vitt have yielded three CDs' worth of material--Volume 1 and Keystone Encores augment this particularly strong set. Here the quartet tackles a pair of rollicking rockabilly numbers, a blues staple, a wonderfully touching, soulful ballad, and the standard "My Funny Valentine," the latter delivered in a rather exploratory style. --Marc Greilsamer

Sounds Great!.......2006-11-03
if you love jerry & his solo project sound, you need this for your colloection.
Superb.......2004-12-10
This CD is the best of all 3 Keystone releases. Period. If you are gonna get one, get this one. "Like a Road" drips with emotion and "Funny Valentine" is very jazzy, loose, and will impress any music fan. Worth the price for just these 2 tracks alone.
Burning up the Keystone.......2001-01-31
Live At Keystone, Vol. 2 highlights two of the most fabulous muscicans of the 20th century. Jerry Garcia and Merl Saunders share the pinnacle of their careers on this funky live album. Both products of the San Francisco counter culture, Saunders and Garcia colaborated many times during the 70's and 80's at the famous Keystone Auditorium. The two effortlessly bounce their electric emotions off of eachother throughout the entire album. Saunders and Garcia jam out almost every track on the album, and their raport with the audience can be heared in the background. Live At Keystone, Vol. 2 is an album that cannot be passed up by music lovers of any kind.

I saw Otis live in New Orleans in 1966. This album comes close to that "live" experience. It was recorded with Otis's "road band". It is live, rough and raw. And you can hear his down-to-earth friendliness shine through. Not a "must-have, but it is a "must hear"!

L.A.'s Breakestra might kick out the jams with some killer funk, but at heart they're a hip-hop band. After all, it was rap's insatiable sample seeking that helped resurrect waning interest in funk, and Breakestra take the crate-diggin' craze one step further. Led by Miles Tackett, this 12-plus member band rummages deep through the musical samples that have made hip-hop the sonic force it is. Raiding everyone from James Brown to Roy Ayers to the Meters and countless other small-time funkateers, Breakestra re-create the soulful and jazzy sounds of yesteryear. They tease the ear with songs made infamous by rap artists like A Tribe Called Quest, KRS-One, Pete Rock, Marley Marl, and others. Their Live Mix, Part 2 reverberates with the spontaneity that only a live band can create, as segues shift with just a quick drum break or brass stab. While trainspotting sample hounds will get a kick out of Breakestra, you don't need prior knowledge of the samples to enjoy the album. No matter what, Breakestra guarantee a funkin' good time. Customer Reviews:
Great album, even if short.......2006-06-21
This is a short album, but it's terrific. Absolutely fantastic music, well worth the money.
An impeccably performed Funk/Breaks Mixtape, with literally no Equal....!!!.......2005-08-03
Breakestra is a collective of musicians: (Drummers, Trumpeters, Horns, Guitar, Trombone, Keyboards, cello...etc), that center around the key figure of "Miles Tackett", a breaks enthusiast, that spearheaded the idea of taking, loads of previously highly regarded Soul, Funk & Hip-Hop tracks, and then getting an assembled Hip-Hop orchestra to interpret these tracks into a Live performance, seamlessly moving from one track to the next, in the manner of a mixtape. But the emphasis of the collective here, is that their sound is one informed more by Funk composition, more than Hip-Hop, and that, the tracks themselves, organically evolve into the next, without any significant jumps in the continuity of the performance.
The first segment of the disk (Sections 1-9) are largely taken up with absolutely sublime instrumental interpretations of tracks that most people will recognise as classic hip-Hop breaks ("A Tribe Called Quest", "KRS-One", "Pete Rock", "Marley Marl", "Public Enemy", "De La Soul"...etc), and apart from being exact (apart from a ever so slightly more audibly difference in sound, due to the instruments not being the exact ones originally used), the tracks themselves, may sound to some listeners, as if the band have taken each track, and heavily steeped it in Funk. (This is because the Hip-Hop Tracks that most will recognise, are themselves sampled originally from Funk Tracks...and so the band are merely using the original Funk recordings, as their template).
From there on in, the album is a collection of Jaw-Dropping covers / Slightly different reinterpretations / And the occasional original composition (with "Getcho Soul Together" & "Sexy Popcorn Pot," making up the bands original material), that find a incredibly talented band that simply have, not only the musicianship, but the complete accessibility in their music to appeal to a far wider audience, than they currently have. (admittedly, their album isn't widely available enough in the U.K., for more people to actually know about their music). So with a album that is a continuous collection of Funk Breaks, that rattles it way through tracks, adding or improvising the sound, but with enough recognisable tracks from artists such as: James Brown, Sly and the Family Stone, that means that, this isn't one of those Rare-Funk mixes, where none of the material is familiar & initially difficult to penetrate, this strikes a fine balance between having enough recognisable material for newcomers, & more rare/hard to find Deep Funk, for the enthusiasts/Crate Diggers. And what both parties will agree on, is the familiar material is so expertly interpreted or re-created, into a Live orchestration, that it sounds doesn't sound overly familiar and feels like a new spin (or slight remix) of established tracks.
Holding together a lot of the transitions between tracks is the MC "Mixmaster Wolf" (Aka Stones-throws "Peanut Butter Wolf"), who...sings, Mcees, Raps and shouts-out over/between tracks...and actually manages to liven up the proceedings. And without his contributions, this mixtape would run the risk of just being a merely impeccably performed instrumental Breaks album, lacking a little something, to warrant multiple plays (Purists with possibly prefer to hear the music uninterrupted), but few could deny that his high energy, high impact MCing, adds an undeniable party atmosphere to the proceedings
Possibly the most apt description I could give, in describing this stunning mixtape is....imagine the legendary Funk band "The Meters" covering well-known Funk/Hip-Hop Breaks, with all the energetic skill and unmitigated exuberance, befitting one of Funk music greatest acts, and then add a particularly skilled MCee, with all the swagger & celebratory vocals of a young 'James Brown', and you've have unquestionably one of the most brilliantly conceived mixtapes in recent memory. (Admittedly the concept & arrangement behind this, goes a lot further, than just merely being a standard mixtape), and if you have even a passing interest in either Breaks, Funk/Funky-Breaks or indeed like the idea of fantastically euphoric Jam sessions , you simply must seek out this largely ignored gem, for some of the most proficiently performed and feel-good mix-albums of recent years, and is absolutely worth any needed effort to purchase or track this album down.
Bring me some funk. With extra funk. And a side of funk........2005-07-13
This album is GREAT. If you dig funk, tight grooves, stuff that makes you drop it like it's hot, then you won't be disappointed with Breakestra. This is $15 well spent.
amazing beats-- and feats!.......2002-08-30
Anything Mr. Miles Tackett is involved in is nothing less than wonderful. From the earliest sessions with the Inclined up to any of his latest efforts, I am always impressed!
flavor by nature.......2001-11-07
This album is funky. it is not funk-ish or funk-like, but funky, pure and simple. Seldom am i moved to groove like this album did for me. The first time I heard this album, I nearly crashed my car into another car piloted by a funk philistine. Its that fresh. You would be letting yourself down to not buy this one, maybe even torturing yourself. Just when I thought that I had heard the last of the good grooves available on compact disc, I get my ears molested by some of the best jams to date. To not buy this album is to not persue happiness.

Five stars for the Cher mix alone..........2005-06-18
Disc 1 is mostly for the dark, repetitive tribal lovers. As if to prove how boring some of these songs can be, some tracks last for only a minute or two. Basically, I woke up at track 15, and from there to 18, there was something worth dancing to.
Disc 2 gathers some great tracks, including some junior exclusives. The main reason to get this ENTIRE disc is for the brilliant Junior mix of Cher's Sun Ain't Gonna Shine in its full length. I only wish he had done that with some of the other exclusives on here, rather than giving us short versions of say, Deborah Cox, and then giving us near 10 minutes of the commercially available Dolly Parton. And what's worse, you think junior would have clean versions of his own mixes. Who Do You Love and Sun Ain't Gonna Shine are both plagued by pops in the vinyl. This is tragic, especially considering these were not released commercially. Even so, this is the only place to get Cher, so put up with the pops at the beginning of the song and just enjoy the mix. Track times are:

One of the best........2003-04-11
Vasquez's innovative perception of what music should sound like. His twisted and creative talent has made this a must own to any techno/club head!
Underground sound............2001-03-09
I've never had the pleasure of seeing Junior mix live so I'm reviewing this as a person that's only heard his cd's. Since most people didn't hear him do his thing live in NYC clubs, this review may apply to the average non-NYC resident. This cd set is strictly underground (stuff you'll never ever hear on the radio), so if you're looking for some "popular" house music you should probably look elsewhere. That said, this is an excellent addition to any house collection. The beats are booming and flow together nicely with a kinda Trance tone. In summary, the best way I can describe this 2CD set is that, the music won't make you run to the dancefloor but if you're already out there this mix will keep you dancing. The only selection that would force me to put down a drink and run to the dancefloor is "Fly Life" by Basement Jaxx. Other than that there are no real hits in this set. It's not a CD set to define house music by, but is certainly a nice "addition" to an already existing collection.
Junior Vasquez has released this MUST HAVE CD!!!.......2001-01-28
I have tons of CD's containing this type of music. But this CD is the best in my collection. Unlike other DJ's, Junior Vasquez has somehow managed to put together an array of songs, no two sound alike!!!! I have friends who are dance instructors, and this has become a MUST HAVE in their collections as well! I would definately suggest purchasing this double CD set!
Superb, as Junior always is........2000-05-16
This CD is some of Junior's finest spinning. Upon it's debut, this compilation was spun over a TWILO on Saturday night back in 98 and it was pumping back then. This cd shows junior's flawless remixing style and gives a taste of the tribal style that he has mastered. As a resident DJ at Twilo on Saturday evenings, and as the old resident DJ at the once superior Sound Factory, he has withstood the test of time. Those of you who love this cd, look for his imports, they make this cd seem a bit simple. One of his best compilations is Junior live from Germany and London. He pushes the envelope there as he does for us in this beautiful city.
Junior will always keep our city pumping.

After more than 50 years as a performer, Mose Allison is nothing if not a known commodity. His voice is thin and nasal, his piano playing is swingin' but not spellbinding. A gift for songwriting is what sets Allison apart--his sardonic lyrics are often filled with hilarious wit and acrobatic wordplay, and his arrangements are a vibrant mix of jumpin' jazz and urbane R&B. Recorded live at London's Pizza Express, the 17 songs here are culled from the breadth of Allison's illustrious career, with a few Ellington covers ("Lucky So and So," "Do Nothing Till You Hear from Me") and the blues classic "Baby Please Don't Go" added for good measure. The band is right with Allison throughout, with guitarist Jim Mullen prominently featured. Adeptly capturing Allison at his best, Live in London, Vol. 2 is certainly one for the fans, but it's not a bad place to start either. --Tad Hendrickson

Amazin' Mose.......2007-03-28
This is the 2nd Vol of a 2 volume set of "must have Mose". If you are a fan of Mose Allison these 2 cds should be part of your collection. Due to technology limitations there aren't a great deal of Mose's performance available on cd - this captures Mose lively and loose.
Does justice to his live shows!.......2002-03-07
I'll keep it short and sweet...if you dig Mose Allison, you already have musical taste far superior to most humans. This volume is just as good as Volume 1, the sound is incredible, his voice is timeless, the song selection almost identical to the Mose shows I saw in '99, '00, and '01. Do not be fooled by the lousy samples provided by Amazon.com (they all seem to start at the guitar solo). This album will not disappoint you!
Better than Volume One - but still not five stars........2002-01-08
Some nine months after Volume One became available comes Volume Two. Blue Note use the same basic sleeve cover (different colours and a different outside sleeve photograph - but essentially the same sleeve notes by Ben Sidran) but don't point out, other than including his name, that guitarist Jim Mullen augmented the basic trio for these tracks. The presence of Mullen overcomes the criticism that I had of the first volume that many of the track selections sounded "samey". There are longer and fewer tracks than on its predecessor. At times, perhaps, it can be argued that the guitarist makes too much use of what sounds like a phaser. There are interesting versions of some old favourites, "Your mind's on vacation" gets a makeover and there is a good version of "Do nothing 'til you hear from me"."City home" is another track that benefits from a reappraissal. Of the non-Allison songs Duke Ellington's "Lucky so and so" works well.I still think that editors Ben Sidran and Dan Geocaris could have included a lot more of the banter that makes Allison "live" such an exciting prospect, there were entertaining episodes that would have worked well if they'd been included. A better album than Volume One, but still not as engaging as one might have hoped from an artist well honed in the art of total entertainment.

Album Description
In the early 80s, Trouble Funk energized their Washington DC home base with the sound of go-go music, an uproarious blend of swinging, up-tempo 70s funk, and a 60s-style horn section. They earned a loyal fan base for their can't-miss live act--a raw, party friendly version of dance and funk with extensive jams, audience friendly vocal tags, and call-out hooks. This double CD set contains a live re-issue disc and an early singles disc of tracks never before released on CD.

Buckethead, Bootsy, George 'GC'and Bill 'B.' Laswell can outdo the rest. Don't settle for superficial solutions right now. The stars give you the ability to go deep when you're plumbing for answers. If your instincts are telling you that all is not as it seems, listen to them for Praxis is no Joke nor are the talents of thunder bass of Bootsy, Graham Central Station, Ronkat, Stanley Clarke, George Bro. Johnson. It's a "Transmutation & Funkcronomicon Axiom Funk cd." Demand straight answers rather than hiding your head in the sand. You know that you need the cold, hard facts, but remaining blissfully ignorant will just result in more (and easily avoidable) problems.

If only all bands were this good!.......2005-01-27
I picked this CD up on a whim looking for something new (to me that is) and haven't looked back since. This may be the greatest CD I have ever bought. The Live CD is amazing and makes me sad that I missed this band in their day jammin' the DC scene. The Early Singles Disc is just ripe with hits. Personal Favorite is "E flat Boogie" but frankly all these songs rock. There is a great mix of everything here. I found this CD for $10 on www.21361.com (Thanks Henry Rollins for putting this out for us all on District Line)...I suggest grabbing it there for a resonable amount. Trouble Funk will not dissappoint!!

COOKIN' SOME TUNA.......2005-09-30
There once was this little Club in Mill Valley in Northern California called the Sweetwater and in 1992 Hot Tuna picked this special place to record a bunch of shows for a live CD. Well, folks the first one: "Live at Sweetwater" did well enough to make "Tunaheads" scream loudly for a "Sweetwater Two" and Jorma was listening and gave us this release... Thank You, Jorma.
This is three piece "Acoustic" Tuna with Jorma singing and playing guitars, Jack (Eyebrows) Casady on Bass Guitar and Michael Falzarano on Guitars, mandolin, harmonica and vocals. Pete Sears joins on Piano, Bob Weir brought his guitar along and sings also as does Maria Muldaur.
"Hesitation Blues" is the opener and it's a good one, the groove is relaxed and Jorma is in excellant voice, the sound of these tapes are as good as live recordings get...Fantastic sounding Mix, this one sparkles crystal clear.
Next is "Dime For Beer" an old Jelly Roll Morton blues number with Michael's mandolin playing the piano parts and it fits the acoustic setting well. "Trial By Fire" sounds brand new done this way (way different from Airplane versions). A steller "Death Don't Have No Mercy" was my favorite cut from the original release but on this Expanded Edition there is lot's of competiton with the bonus cuts added in. But "Death" is still great with some fine Piano from Pete Sears, this one is not to be missed.
The bonus cuts added to this CD bring the running time up to 74 minutes and "Too Many Years" was one of the tracks added and it's my favorite here, best version of this one yet.
Happy Traum is the guest on "Ain't Got No Home" and Bob Weir turns up on "Good Morning Little Schoolgirl". A rare "Blue Moon of Kentucky" is included with a Bayou Accordian solo and killer Dorbo, this is a way different sound for the boys. "Chelsea" is good, but I have never heard a bad version of this Airplane classic. Things come to a close with "My AK 47", "Parchman Farm", and Tuna's take on "Folsom Prison Blues".
Any Tuna Fan should own "Sweetwater One" & "Sweetwater Two", Hot Tuna is a part of Bay Rock History and they are just as important as The Dead or The Airplane (even if they never achieved the "cult worship" of those two groups) ROCK ON HOT TUNA !!!
