A good overview of Sting's radio hits and popular album tracks with only one major omission ("Mad About You"), Fields of Gold also offers three previously-unreleased songs. "This Cowboy Song" and "When We Dance" appear on no other album, while "We'll Be Together" is an alternate version. The import version of this collection offers a substantially different (and expanded) track listing, dropping "Fortress Around Your Heart," "Be Still My Beating Heart," and "Why Should I Cry for You"; and adding "Mad About You," "Nothing 'Bout Me," "Seven Days," "It's Probably Me," "Love is the Seventh Wave," and "Demolition Man." --Gavin McNettCustomer Reviews:

misleading at best.......2006-11-06
The version of We'll Be Together (a great song) is an alternate take (mix?), VASTLY inferior to the album / radio version. It's anemic. Lacks the punch. In a word -- sucks.
That you're not told this on the cover is misleading.
I really enjoy Mr. Sumner's music. All the other tunes are as they should be, and they are terrific. 4-5 stars. But don't buy this product if you expect to hear what you've heard on the album or the radio.

Album Description
Import only compilation from one of the top British Urban/dance acts of the early '80s. This trio (Carl McIntosh, Jane Eugene and Steve Nichol) began life as Loose End, but changed their name to Loose Ends right before fame came knocking on their door when they hit paydirt with the 'Hangin' On A String' single in 1985. Their hit streak continued up through the end of the decade with tracks like 'Golden Years', 'Slow Down', 'Watching You' and others. The group did continue in the early '90s, but only after Eugene and Nichol had been replaced and the magic had all but disappeared. 15 tracks. EMI.Album Details

The "Golden Age" referred to here spans The Jazz Singer and the advent of the talkies to the death throes of the old studio system in the 1960s. So vast was the era's musical landscape that even this 42-track, double-disc anthology can't encompass all its peaks. Not surprisingly, the bulk of this collection originated with the Tiffany's of the screen musical, M-G-M, a body of work whose riches here encompass both pop-cultural bedrock ("Over the Rainbow," "Singin' in the Rain," "There's No Business Like Show Business," etc.) and some less familiar, if equally delightful star turns: Clark Gable gamely "Puttin' On the Ritz"; the sassy, 1948 original of "The Lady Is a Tramp" by Lena Horne; and a loopy duet of "Baby, It's Cold Outside" by Esther Williams and Ricardo Montalban. Fred Astaire's elegant, epochal reign at RKO and M-G-M is represented by "Night and Day," "Let's Face the Music and Dance," and three others, while Metro mainstays Gene Kelly and Judy Garland share equal time and billing. It's not perfect--Cagney's "Yankee Doodle Boy" and/or some Sinatra seem more logical choices than the odd "bonus" duet of Casablanca's "As Time Goes By" and "Lara's Theme" from Dr. Zhivago that close out disc one--but it's a stunning, surprisingly comprehensive primer on the Hollywood film musical nonetheless. --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:
They were right--there is NO business like the show business they did way back when !!!.......2006-11-18
Can happen in a show
You can make 'em laugh
You can make 'em cry
Anything
Anything can go....
The clown with his pants falling down
Or the dance that's a dream of romance
Or the scene where the villain is mean
That's entertainment!
The lights on the lady in tights
Or the bride with the guy on the side
Or the ball where she gives him her all
That's entertainment!
The plot and the hot simply teeming with $ex
A gay divorcee who is after her ex
It could be Oedipus Rex
Where a chap kills his father
And causes a lot of bother
The clerk who is thrown out of work
By the boss who is thrown for a loss
By the skirt who is doing him dirt
The world is a stage,
The stage is a world of entertainment!
This two CD set amply proves that the musical melodies and lyrics from the golden age of the Hollywood musical remain unsurpassed to this day. This generous two CD set offers 42 incredible songs from Hollywood classic musicals. Most of these fine numbers are indeed from MGM, as Amazon correctly notes; but there are some RKO numbers and even a little from Warner Brothers. Thank goodness, though, that most of these songs came from MGM movies; MGM was the only studio that could boast that it truly had "more stars than there are in the heavens."
I love so many songs on these two CDs. Of course, there's the unforgettable classic "Over The Rainbow" sung by Judy Garland; she also performs "Easter Parade" and "Get Happy" on this two CD set and she carries most of the tune for "I Got Rhythm" even though Mickey Rooney helps her a little. I love "Baby, It's Cold Outside" for its' romantic overtones; and Lena Horne's "The Lady Is A Tramp" is flawless! We also get a rare chance to hear Clark Gable sing in "Puttin' On The Ritz;" and Bing Crosby's "Going Hollywood" may be brief but it's a fun song anyway.
There are two "bonus" tracks on the first CD: "As Time Goes By" from Casablanca and "Lara's Theme" from Doctor Zhivago. "As Time Goes By" is a good choice; it is another unsurpassed classic song that brings back memories and touches even the hardest of hearts. "Lara's Theme," however, is from the mid 1960s and I don't consider this period to be part of the "golden age" of Hollywood musicals.
The liner notes are excellent and they offer wonderful photos of the stars as well. The cover art is well done and the reverse cover art tells which movie each song is from and who is performing each song. Moreover, the quality of the sound is excellent especially when you consider that these numbers were recorded quite a few decades ago.
In short, this superlative two CD highlights the glory of the Hollywood musical when a certain type of sophistication dominated professional movie production. I highly recommend this CD for fans of Hollywood musicals, classic pop vocals and fans of the artists and actors who perform on this two CD set.

WUNDERBAR - Kathryn Grayson & Howard Keel (two of MGM's favorite singing duos) (1953)
It was once said by the songwriters of that era - "There are two artists you want perform your songs on the big screen, they are Fred Astaire and Judy Garland they sing it just the way we wrote it, for which you will have a guaranteed hit on your hands"...well, this collections certainly has some merit to that statement...because with Judy Garland and Fred Astaire performing seven songs each, there must be something to it.
This collection of musicals still has the magic that we remember from those bygone years...but as long as we have the labels and networks who play and show these wonderful films of yesteryear, they will never be forgotten...hats off to Rhino Records, George Feltenstein (producer) and Doug Schwartz (engineer) and Turner Classic Movies for sharing those 42 selections from 42 films...celebrating decades of the tunes and artists that gave it their all...from what it commonly called "The Hollywood Dream Factory"...The Golden Age of Hollywood Musicals is still among us...gotta love it!

"THE JUDY GARLAND JACKPOT"!!!.......2007-06-20
Once Judy was free from the shackles of the MGM movie studio, she started Concert appearances and gave us a brilliant "A STAR IS BORN" at Warner Brothers in 1954. Arriving at Capitol Records in 1955, Judy took charge; determined to sing her songs HER way. With superb arrangements from Nelson Riddle, Mort Lindsey, and others, Judy never sang in the "sweet girl next door from MGM Style" ever again!! She was a woman with a lot of good and bad life experience, and it shows in the rich, robust, warm, full-throttle vocals here.
In addition to Judy's signature songs, you'll hear "Danny Boy", "Last Night When We Were Young", "Me And My Shadow," "Life Is Just A Bowl Of Cherries," "Lucky Day," "Little Girl Blue," "Anyplace I Hang My Hat Is Home," "I Gotta Right To Sing The Blues," "I Concenttrate On You," "If I Love Again," "This Is It", and so many more! The only real great Judy performances I'm missing here are "Hello, Bluebird" and the full-force, dramatic Mort Lindsey arrangement of "By Myself"-- both of these are included on the soundtrack of Judy's final film "I COULD GO ON SINGING" in 1963. For The Record, on the beautiful 1955 recording of "Over The Rainbow" included here on CD One, it does sound as though Judy quietly bursts into tears mid-way through, and just keeps on crying until the finish. Judy's fans, however (and we know who we are!) will be filled with joy. for this beautiful 3-CD Set, along with "THE WIZARD OF OZ," "A STAR IS BORN" and the complete, historic 1961 "CARNEGIE HALL" CD, are all the essentials necessary for a proper Judy Garland Festival. REJOICE IN THE GLORIOUS TALENTS OF JUDY GARLAND!!! Amen!!

Minnie Riperton's untimely death from breast cancer (in 1979 at the age of 32) robbed the world of one its truly great, truly distinctive voices. Her operatically-trained, five-octave instrument was the very model of beauty and control. Consequently, her signature tune, "Lovin' You," is likely the breeziest bit of pop you may ever hear. In addition to her own songs, Riperton also makes light work of material as lovely and strong as Stevie Wonder's "Perfect Angel" and Joni Mitchell's "Woman of Heart and Mind." The only misstep on this collection, in fact, is yet another unnecessary take of The Doors' "Light My Fire." --Michael RubyCustomer Reviews:

A Solid 'Best of..'.......2005-06-17
Often unfairly marketed as the poor man's Duran Duran early in their career, Spandau Ballet matured from their new wave-esque beginnings of To Cut a Long Story Short', through the early to mid 80's with True and Gold, probably their strongest songs here and onto 'Through The Barricades'. Personally there are one or two songs on here I would have omitted however I'm not going to complain. In all, a decent (and decently mastered) set of songs.

Great collection of songs here........2007-07-22
WHAM!.......2007-05-12
Truly Heaven.......2006-07-09
Wham's The Final is a real well-definitive reflection of George Michael & Andrew Ridgeley, and what this great group shine back in the 1980's. The songs here have all been restored, and remastered very well here. Unlike other hits packages from Wham, this record has delivered without anything overlooked. All the great classics are highlighted here like Wake Me Up Before You Go Go, the soulful Careless Whisper, The Edge Of Heaven, Bad Boys, Young Guns (Go For It), I'm Your Man, and Everything She Wants, Club Tropicana, and Freedom. Unlike the 1997 WHam hits package, this one is the one that still remains definitive.
Nevertheless, it is quite sad that the Wham's The Final hasn't been released here in America, unless it is a import. This is a great collection, and well worth buying for anyone who loved the group, or if you are just a fan of 80's music, I absolutely love this record a whole lot.

Soul Asylum were, in many ways, two distinct bands. Prior to signing with Columbia, Soul Asylum scored minor hits with "Cartoon" and "Sometime to Return." Their hard-won reputation, however, was not as a singles band. Instead, the group built its fan base via incessant touring and a string of hard-charging, heart-on-sleeve albums, including the wonderful Made to be Broken and While You Were Out. Soul Asylum's later years brought the hits ("Runaway Train," "Misery"), the MTV exposure, and the change in the band's style from gritty rock to hook-driven pop. Fans of the band's latter, more commercial period should find this disc interesting, since the set is dominated by this material. There are some treats for rarity hunters, however. A live recording of "Closer to the Stars," an acoustic reading of "Stranger," and a previously unreleased track called "Lonely for You" beef up this collection. While Black Gold certainly could have been more complete, for fans of latter-period Soul Asylum, this is a good starting point, albeit one missing most of the group's most important and interesting early work. --S. Basically, what people need to hear is a boxed set that begins with Time's Incinerator up until Hang time (with about half of the Horse they rode in on thrown in)and a handful of the best covers they did along the way.
Ultimately the downfall may be summed up by "the harder that it sparkles the more it can corrupt."
If that line means nothing to you...you may not want to bother since you have been sold a string of pearls.
Best of from 1993 and Beyond.......2003-12-25
Never forget that Soul Aslyum started in 1979 as Loud Fast Rules and then changed their name to Soul Aslyum because they didnt want to be seen as a HC band.
And where are the Time's Incinerator songs? How many people even know about this album? Its too bad that Sould Asylum will be thought of as a 90s bad because they are so much more than that.
