This release is being described as "14 covers of his best by top pop starspast & present." This is not the case, as most of these tracks are songs that were given to the artist that is singing them. Most of them are songs that Prince himself has never officially released.

With that said, this release has it's ups and downs, but the good far outweighs the bad here. "Sugar Walls" is classic, as is "Manic Monday." To be able to hear Joe Cocker's "5 Women" and Kid Creole's "Sex of It" without having to buy either album that contained each song is a godsend. There's nothing worse than wanting to hear a song Prince has given to someone, and having to buy a whole album for one song.

The only rotten apples in this bunch are "On The Way Up" and "Nothing Compares 2 U," one an original track and one a cover, both are not that great here. "Nothing Compares 2 U" despite what many believe was not made great by Sinead O'Connor. The track in its original form, on the 1986 album "The Family," is the best version there is, in my opinion.

This is a collection of 15 Prince covers. My favorite is Cyndi Lauper doing "When U Were Mine". Other strong selections are Sugar Walls by Sheena Easton (there just aren't enough songs about vaginas out there), "The Sex of It" by the perfect party band to cover Prince...Kid Creole, and The Bangles taking "Manic Monday" and totally making it their own. Other choice cuts are by Melisa Morgan, Stephanie Mills and Joe Cocker. The remainder is pretty mediocre covers from Tina Turner, Living Colour, Nona Hendryx, among others. Biggest disappointment is Nothing Compares 2 U by MXM when nothing compares to Sinead O'Connor's version.

Prince is one of those Artists that it is tough to Cover His material but Tina Turner,Stephanie Mills,Sinead O'Conner,Living Color,Sheena Easton&The Bangles step up to the material.the rest is just so/so to me.

Songbook Review.......2001-07-29

Great things about this recording: 1- The Classic 80's cuts. Sugar Walls - Sheena Easton, Manic Monday - The Bangles. Melissa Morgan does a fairly good job with "Do me Baby", Stephanie Mills does well performing "How come you don't Call Me" . "The Sex Of It is a great 80's style pop/funk/ dance track - if you haven't heard it your missin out. It was difficult to listen to Joe Crocker, Living Color and Cyndi Lauper perform 0+> work. Overall it's worth checking it out.
