R.H. Harris, the most important singer you've never heard .......2004-11-24
In terms of their impact on American music, these records are on par with Armstongs Hot Fives and Sevens and Elvis' Sun sessions. Harris brought the erratic end of line cracks and swooping melissmas of early Texas blues (think Blind Lemon Jefferson) into gospel. And the Stirrers pioneered the gospel format of quartet plus lead singer, allowing Harris to roam rhythmically over the percussive acapella 4-part harmony. Further, the Stirrers helped introduce the idea of trading off leads. One singer would take the theme statement, trading off to another singer who would push with hard gritty release. The combination of all these factors made the Stirrers with Harris the most influential gospel group of the era and the true predecessors of secular soul music.
Sadly, many of the 78 transfers here are from pretty noisy sources, and the notes are mostly in Japanese. But this disk will have to do until some other record company does justice to these seminal sides.
