In the wake of his Sixth Sense triumph, young director M. Night Shyamalan shrewdly marketed himself as a marquee draw, a thriller auteur in the vein of Hitchcock and DePalma. In the process he's also run headlong into one of Hollywood's truest adages: There's no such thing as a sure thing. But while his tale of an isolated hamlet ringed by mysterious, threatening 'others' met with tepid reviews and disappointing box office, it also underscored another filmmaking truism: So-so films can still be blessed with magnificent musical scores. This hauntingly beautiful, yet thoroughly contemporary orchestral soundtrack by James Newton-Howard distinguishes itself at every turn, becoming a clear standout in the ongoing collaboration between the composer and Shyamalan. While similar fusions of minimalist and post-modern musical influences can sometimes seem not much more than hollow intellectual exercises, Newton-Howard inhabits his hypnotic arpeggios and droning rhythms here with an evocative undercurrent of the mysterious and mystical. The composer leans heavily on solo violin to conjure a mock folk tradition of indistinct origins, wedding it to a contemporary classical sense that's as seamless as it is distinguished. -- Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars tapestry of color.......2007-07-28

Rich, powerful and moving, Howard's score is an interweaving tapestry of a constant haunting undercurrent of a theme with Hilary Hahn's beautiful obligato's soaring above. This soundtrack will take you to the brink of yourself as you can feel your soul being pulled along with the music. An absolute `must have' for any serious music lover. If you doubt its majesty, sit down and listen - it's well worth your time.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Score -- Very Unique.......2007-02-22

I have long been a film-score aficionado. My favorite composers are Hans Zimmer, James Horner, Jerry Goldsmith, John Williams -- only the best of the best. I had always known about James Newton Howard and his work, and always respected his unique abilities and talents.

It was with this score that he really caught my attention. The central theme of the film is a love story, and the characters just happen to be caught up in a nightmarish scenario. The score reflects this perfectly; some of the pieces are classically romantic, quiet pieces, while others are thunderous and frightening to reflect the danger and terror portrayed in the film.

James Newton Howard's later works, like "King Kong" (2005) and his co-score with Hans Zimmer on "Batman Begins" (2005) continued to show that he is rightly considered one of Hollywood's A-list composers for big films.

4 out of 5 stars One of the few good things about this wretched film.......2006-11-05

I admit I absolutely hated "The Village". The film started out rather good. The build up in suspense was flawlessly executed but then the second half of the film totally went downhill for me. One of the few things I enjoyed about "The Village" is the film score by James Newton Howard. The combination of the orchestral film score and dark cinematography was perfect. Both complimented each other. Violinist Hilary Hahn was what really gravitated me to the music. A lot of film scores have a terrible tendency to be loud and bombastic (like John Williams and Hans Zimmer) but James Howard Newton's score is subtle and never overwhelming to a person's ears.

5 out of 5 stars The score elevates the film.......2006-08-09

'The Village' was panned pretty harshly in critical circles, but whatever you think of the film, James Newton Howard's score for it is a beautiful piece of work. It lends a haunting, lyrical quality to the film, and it is wonderful to listen to by itself, whether or not you like or have even seen the movie.

While there are a couple pieces in the score that are a little more high-octane in terms of suspense, most of the music is very low-key. Still suspenseful, even spooky at times, but in a very understated and thoughtful way. In some ways similar to Howard's score for 'Signs', which also used repeated rhythms and themes throughout in different ways, the music for 'The Village' differs from the standard "scary movie" score by having pieces which establish a real emotional depth and presence. 'The Village' is a film about love and loss, and much of the music expresses those themes perfectly.

A big part of how the music gets to the depths of emotion is the solo violin performances of Hilary Hahn, present to some extent in almost every piece. From the opening strains of "Noah Visits," the first piece on the CD, her violin speaks the language of the heart and draws the listener into a beautiful world of haunting music, inescapable and compelling. I am amazed by her versatility here. From the fast rhythmic notes of "The Gravel Road" to the high strains of "I Cannot See His Color" to the final, bittersweet tones of "The Vote," Hahn's violin creates a steady thread through the whole score, unifying it and making it unique at the same time. I've listened to several of Hahn's classical performances as well, but I have to say that of what I've heard, her performance for 'The Village' may be her most unique and most compelling yet.

The combination of James Newton Howard's compositions and Hilary Hahn's lush performance have created some beautiful music for 'The Village'. Whether you love the movie or hate it, or even if you're just looking for some rich orchestral music with a beautiful violin performance, this score is well worth owning and listening to many times over.

4 out of 5 stars Good Soundtrack!.......2006-08-03

I'll admit I bought this soundtrack for the music that played during the rescue scene when Phoenix grabbed Howard's hand---that part alone was worth the buy--beautiful music. Anyway, if you like scary music, there's plenty of that on here, but I usually skip those. So let's get down to it---how many tracks do I play over and over and never get sick of them? Numbers 9, 8, and 4's second half-- it switches from scary to the scene mentioned above. Those three are hauntingly beautiful. Numbers 1 and 5 are also very pretty if you are in a very relaxed state. The rest I don't really listen to simply because they're scary. But, if I can find a cd with at least 3 songs I really like, I consider it worth buying...so I recommend this soundtrack. Plug--- recommend the movie even more, even though the music is scarier than the movie itself. That movie has the best chic flic moment I've seen (guess which scene I'm talking about). Also, "Good afternoon Lucius..."--- that part is hilarious!

Theres not enough words to put down on what this group means to me....I wirte some of my best works by their music.

4 out of 5 stars Vampire country.......2007-05-10

Books don't usually have soundtracks. "Dracula" definitely didn;t.

But when listening to Nox Arcana's "Transylvania," all I could think of was Bram Stoker's quintessential vampire, and the hauntingly creepy atmosphere of the book. The band forms plenty of rich neoclassical tunes, around a hazy storyline about (what else?) vampires.

It opens with a creepy organ, some smooth violins sweeping up from behind. A deep voice intones, "Darkness descends upon the land, wrap the world in night's black embrace... the restless dead stir within their ancient tombs, and creatures born of shadow rise to quench their savage hunger..." Imagine Bela Lugosi rising from a coffin.

It's followed up by some warmup songs -- the darkly enticing "Voyage," which expands out into an epic, eerie sweep, and the ghostly piano of "Gossamer Mist." The songs that follow are just as richly imagined -- ghostly fast-paced strings, magnificently dark organ and grim gypsy music, laced with church bells, shimmering vocals and ghostly little breezes.

Listening to "Transylvania" is like walking slowly through a cobwebbed, shadowy castle, and listening to Dracula playing a pipe organ in a dusty ballroom, with his brides singing accompaniment. It's not too hard to imagine that you're Jonathan Harker, after hearing songs like "Echoes From the Crypt."

Their music is an lush dusty tapesty of gothic instrumentation. Rich, hollow organ, shimmering harp, strings both windy and rapid, fast-moving percussion, a delicate piano, and some dark shimmers of keyboard all blend together into haunting slow-turning melodies. And as if that weren't good enough, they sprinkle the music with the flutter of bat wings, church bells, ghostly murmurs, and delicate music-box tinkles.

Fortunately Nox Arcana doesn't wreck all this eerie atmosphere with typical singing. Instead we get the occasional deep-voiced intonations, sort of like the introduction. And there are some delicate female vocals -- they murmur softly one minute, only to rise into echoing, wordless solos the next. It's absolutely stunning.

Nox Arcana's "Transylvania" does a brilliant job of capturing the ideal vampire-gothic atmosphere -- creepy and beautifully refined, with no kitschiness. The ideal soundtrack to Bram Stoker's classic (not to mention Halloween).

5 out of 5 stars This soundtrack drains your blood dry, it's that awsome!.......2007-01-28

I have this one, its great. It's not only good for Halloween but its good for when you go to sleep at night, it actually puts you into another realm of dreams and nightmares. It helps you sleep and not only that, it gives you something to relax your body with. It's very good for one of those stormy and rainy or snowy nights. I am an artist and I use it to create monster theme pictures and other creepy drawings. It helps me put myself in that state of mind were I can listen to this and let my imagination flow. If you like this one you will really love the CARNIVAL OF LOST SOULS, WINTER KNIGHT. I still have to get the winter knight one. These soundtracks are classics, not that many peopl listen to them. They are for the soul purpose to escaping the real world and entering another of the bizzare and strange. They are just good to listen too, when ever you feel like it. But this is a good tool for some people who have trouble sleeping at night. But if you listen to the children of the night, and what lovely music they made, you will deffently get your money's worth on all 3 cd's Translyvania, Winter Knight, Carnival of lost Souls... It's worth it.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful Halloween Fare.......2006-11-01

You can hear a constant improvement in the musical quality of Nox Arcana's CD. This one, particularly, is a big step over Necronomicon. Not that Necronomicon is bad, but Transylvania is really good.
I'm glad I found Nox Arcana (quite by accident, I did a search for Halloween on Amazon and this was one of the hits) they are a treasure.

5 out of 5 stars Yet another great album!.......2006-08-11

Nox Arcana is truly a original band for the era. The music is never boring and you always find something new when listening to it that you may not have heard before. Vargo is a very gifted artist in all the work he does and I for one am glad he formed his own band. The creative work behind the cd's really comes through not just in the music but in the album designs. Midnight Syndicate lost one of the most creative person's behind their success, but by starting the band Nox Arcana at least none of the fans are suffering. Keep up the great work and I look forward to the next album.

4 out of 5 stars Very good show which I hadn't heard of..........2007-05-13

I was very into theatre in high school and college and thought I was up on most musicals, but had never heard of this show until recently. It's comprised of three short stories which were adapted into the musical format. The first two stories are tied together very well, although the last seems tacked on. But the songs are catchy and it's fairly easy to figure out what's happening simply by listening to the songs. There are two songs which are tied for my favoritism: "It's a Fish" from Adam and Eve and "You Are Not Real" from Passionella. Check it out.

5 out of 5 stars THE APPLE TREE (1966 ORIGINAL BROADWAY CAST).......2007-04-10

IT WAS EXACTLY WHAT I WAS LOOKING FOR. I WENT TO THE REVIVAL OF THE APPLE TREE ON BROADWAY IN NEW YORK CITY AND LOVED THE SCORE BUT THERE WASN'T A SOUNDTRACK AVAILABLE SO I PURCHASED THE ORIGINAL VERSION AND I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT!

5 out of 5 stars I still remember these songs after 40 years.......2006-11-05

I saw this show on the stage when it first ran, and have never forgotten it. The key to a good Broadway show is this question: Are you humming the songs when you leave the theatre? In the case of The Apple Tree, the answer is a resounding "Yes." I have been waiting 40 years for this show to be revived, and I have tickets for the revival opening in December at the Roundabout. I hope not to be disappointed, for the trio of Barbara Harris, a very young Alan Alda, and the late Larry Blyden were terrific. The three-part concept can be jarring because just when you're getting into the story, it ends -- but just enjoy the kind of songs they just don't write anymore.

3 out of 5 stars Really 2.5.......2006-07-25

SO this is another show thats actually three one acts. The first "The Diary of Adam and Eve" is the best by far. It has really cute songs and nice plot. Thats the only reason I rounded this up from 2.5 to 3 stars. The rest of the show is nothing great. "Lady and Tiger" is short and boring. And "Passionella" is exactly what it sounds like, a knock off of Cinderella. But hey, its a good show for collectors and "The Diary of Adam and Eve" is nice. Favorite Song: "Its A Fish"

1 out of 5 stars Boring material that you forget very easily.......2006-06-29

According to some reviews, this musical was supposed to be very good and I bought it. Unfortunately, I was quite dissapointed. It's composed of three different tales, the first one referring to the Adam & Eve biblical story. The lyrics here are very silly and tedious. The second tale, "The Lady or the Tiger?" contains songs that are simply awful, probably the worst ever written for a Broadway show. The third story, "Passionella", contains music that does nothing to make things better. The album contains a good informative booklet in English, German, French & Italian (as Sony uses to do)which says that Time magazine defined this show as "three moldy figs". I entirely agree. I would recommend this musical to those suffering from insomnia: it will put them to sleep right away.

4 out of 5 stars Great compilation - and that's just the first half........2005-09-14

I first got this on cassette in the summer of '94 and listened to it every day, drawn by its thematic range and compositional depth. And that was just side-one.

Elfman pioneered the sound that drives today's movie adaptations of comic-books and darker-themed children's stories. Side-One kicks things off with a rollicking, hyper-cartoonish theme from the first Pee-Wee movie - the one where Pee-Wee searches for his beloved bike. Elfman's theme contains layers of different rides - on tightropes, highways, in the middle of a NASCAR rally - which rudely yet melodically crash into each other.

The Batman entry actually contains several pieces - the opening credits, the extended sequence in the cathedral and the climax - which show Batman's darkened extreme at its "Frank Miller" best. (Dir. Tim Burton couldn't sustain the mood in the next sequel, and the franchise took a turn towards the camp of the TV series with the next 2 movies.)

The theme for "Dick Tracy" is perhaps the most romantic on this disc, a quality that surpasses the theme's comic-book origins, but ends on an ironic note that's pure Elfman.

"Beetlejuice" (opening & closing credits) gives Elfman's childish ID a chance to stretch its legs, or in this case, slam-dance.

"Nightbreed" is an enigma wrapped in a dark mystery, and that's just Elfman's score. Elfman's work on this movie is as good as the movie wasn't, having a more powerful narrative than the script - easily the best track on the entire disc, one likely to exceed the movie in its dose of chills.

"Darkman" doesn't quite rise to the occasion, though the score may be hobbled by the movie itself, which seldom surpassed one of the many "Batman" clones of the early 1990's. "Darkman" (the movie, I mean) excelled as a parody of many comicbook staples (the wronged hero, the relentless villain, the scientific breakthrough with just one flaw), but not enough to escape being largely anonymous. Within those constraints, it's still a moving if scary piece.

When is Elfman not like Elfman? When he was in the mid-late `80's and scored "Back to School" (A Rodney Dangerfield vehicle) and "Midnight Run". Horns in "School" bring it closer to Elfman's over-the-top style, while "Run" sounds like a love-theme for the run-down, out-of-the-way parts of America that seldom appear in Elfman-movies. "Run" is a fun score for a fun movie - it's nothing like Elfman's previous work but it perfectly captures the on-the-road-without-a-map craziness of the movie.

To this day, I don't know why I never ventured to Side-two, but it's irrelevant. Even half this disc is worth it

5 out of 5 stars The best of Elfman!!!.......2005-09-05

I was obsessed about getting this CD right from when I heard about it. I found it at the library and was so excited about it, and it didn't let me down. In fact, it was a lot better than I expected. It's a fun and creepy (strange mix, but it really works!) collection of Danny Elfman's film and television soundtracks. The first track, Pee Wee's Big Adventure, is probably my favorite. Also, I really like Batman and Wisdom. Batman is creepy and dark, and Wisdom is just weird, in the best possible way.
I'd recommend this to anyone who likes film music, or everyone who is even the tiniest bit an Elfman fan. It's amazing!

4 out of 5 stars Great Collection, A LIttle Too Eclectic.......2003-08-19

You should be able to tell from the movies and TV shows listed here whether or not you'd be interested in this collection. It's a little too eclectic for my tastes (hence only 4 stars) but better than volume 2. I think thatthe miscellaneous collected ites here along with the previously unreleased stuff should make this worth buying. Especially if you're a fan of Elfman's movie soundtrack work.

5 out of 5 stars What Great Music.......2003-05-11

I fell in love with the music of Danny Elfman when Beetlejuice came out. There was something different about the music that he made. When Edward Scissorhands, and then Nightmare Before Christmas - I knew this man was a musical master. Its the verbal form of surrealism.

5 out of 5 stars super.......2003-04-17

What a great CD. Danny's music is so original and inventive. this CD contains his pre 90's quirky, gothic music. it's all very well written and beautifully orchestrated. batman and darkman contain some really excellent long, dark, gothic cues that really take u away from reality. in my opinion no one, apart from howard shore, is as inventive and original as danny in the world of filmmusic. he far surpasses the repetitive works of williams or horner. buy this, and volume two, and keep supporting one of the greatest film composers of all time.ohh...and buy fellowship of the ring and two towers by howard shore....amazing work!

4 out of 5 stars good chronical of the ants.......2006-03-02

The song selection spans the Adam and the Ants period as well as the Adam Ant period. Dirk Wears White Sox is overrepresented. Adam's more recent stuff, i.e. Room At the Top, came after this compilation. It is not digitally remastered so the quality isn't the best. I've enjoyed it.

5 out of 5 stars "I spend my cash on looking flash and grabbing your attention.".......2005-11-01

The VHS tape "Adam Ant: Adventures in the Forbidden Zone" includes videos of 13 songs from Adam and the Ants made between the years 1980-1985. Songs include:

1.Kings of the Wild Frontier
2.Dog Eat Dog
3.Antmusic
4.Stand and Deliver
5.Prince Charming
6.Ant Rap
7.Goody Two Shoes
8.Friend or Foe
9.Desperate But Not Serious
10.Puss N' Boots
11.Strip
12.Apollo 9
13.Vive Le Rock

While Kings of the Wild Frontier is performed in the studio, the other 12 songs are music videos. Several of the videos are based around popular fairy tales, and these themes are perfect for Adam Ant's flair for theatrics. Who can forget Adam Ant as a highwayman or as a medieval knight? Prince Charming is perhaps the most elaborate music video and includes Diana Dors as the Fairy Godmother--with flashes of Adam Ant dressed as Clint Eastwood, Alice Cooper, Rudolf Valentino, and Marlon Brando.

The music videos allow Adam Ant to show his acting ability, and he really hams it up at times--once even standing next a huge bodybuilder. Fans will remember these videos from MTV, and it's great to see them again compiled together in this 50 minute VHS tape. While the images are not crisp and clear, the quality is not bad (the first sequence, Kings of the Wild Frontier, is the poorest quality). There are also a lot of good close-ups. So here's Adam Ant once more--with all his wild energy, and zest for life. Will there be a DVD release? Let's hope so, but in the meantime, this VHS tape is staying in my collection--displacedhuman

5 out of 5 stars Truly the Best of Adam Ant!.......2005-09-14

This is the definitive best of collection that you're looking for and includes such gems as "Goody Two Shoes", "Beat My Guest", "Antmusic" and (my favourite) "Place in the Country". It also includes some really good obscure stuff like "Ant Rap" and "Killer in the Home". But as with any collection, it's missing some of my favourite gems; particularly "Never Trust A Man...", "Plan Nine Failed", "Physical", "S.E.X", "Picasso Visita...", and "Miss Thing". Short of getting the Antbox or all the individual albums (which is always recommended!) this is a great starter kit. Also check out "B-side Babies" which has an excellent selection of B-sides.

5 out of 5 stars Don't you ever stop being dandy, showing me you're handsome!!!.......2005-07-20

I loved it! It's been a while since I've seen some of those videos. Adam knows how to entertain! My favorite videos of all time are Stand & Deliver, Prince Charming, Antmusic, Goody Two Shoes, and Desperate but not serious. Adam is the king!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Good early compilation of Antmusic.......2005-03-22

This CD is great for those of us who loved Adam Ant in the early 80's. Before "Goody Two Shoes", most of his music did not make a dent on the American charts. But those of who loved European imports at the time still sought out his music. We loved his outrageous style and clothes. This CD contains a lot of those early favorites including "Antmusic", "Stand and Deliver" and "Prince Charming". Then the hits came with "Goody Two Shoes" (#12 Hot 100), "Desperate but not Serious" (#66 Hot 100), and "Strip" (#42 Hot 100). The CD also contains later songs that should have been hits including "Puss 'n Boots", "Apollo 9", and "Vive Le Rock". Why all of his songs weren't Top 10 hits in America is unbelievable. The CD stops with the "Vive Le Rock" album, so it does not include songs like "Room at the Top" or "Wonderful". It is certainly not a complete collection, but it does offer up some of his best early music.

This is tenor Salvatore Licitra's second solo CD and it is better than the first. The voice remains exciting, a true tenor with a sold top and an even range. His tendency to sing at one volume level (relatively loud) remains, but he does make some effort to shade his tone here. The aria from Mefistofele is sung gently, at times sweetly and with the right air of pensiveness; Chenier's last act aria is mournful and sensitive. Elsewhere, his "Dio mi potevi" from Otello is simply stunning--big and rueful, lacking only those special insights to bring the character vividly to life. But his tone is grand and pure. His "Vesti la giubba" is restrained but emotional. Licitra remains a good singer who has yet to leave a truly individual stamp on any work (as does, say, Rolando Villazon), but he's the real ticket: a true Italian tenor with a handsome voice. --Robert Levine

1 out of 5 stars Sad.......2007-04-18

I`m not sure what makes me most unhappy with this recording: The complete lack of technique, style or musicality in Mr. Licitra`s singing, or the fact that most people don`t seem to notice. The voice is in complete tatters, he`s straining, the top is cringeworthy.. Somebody compared him to Di Stefano. I can see and hear the comparison. But one thing is fundamentally different: Di Stefano could make a whole concert-hall in Italy weep for the sheer beauty of his understanding of the drama, the text and for lovely highnotes.(when he was young) I am NOT a fan of Di Stefano, but compared to this, I`ll have him anyday. People, PLEASE!!! Go buy some discs by Pertile, Gigli, Björling or even if you will, a young Pavarotti or Domingo. Then you will hear what should be heard.

I enjoyed this CD. This guy is probably heading into being the greatest Othello ever. He has the blue smoky quality.

Where has this professional been hiding? What a voice and what a way to appreicate the true sound of music. Bravo!

4 out of 5 stars Forbidden Secret Is Discovered.......2006-12-10

Let me first say that I own "The Debut" album by Salvatore Licitra and have seen him perform at The Metropolitan Opera in New York, and while I cannot deny that he is good, there was still something that I felt was missing from this tenor. That "something" was lack of dynamics and expression. For that reason I hesitated buying the new cd "Forbidden Love", but I am glad I did! This album is definately better than his first album in many ways after listening to it a couple of times. First, this new recording perfectly captured the essence of his voice, and the production is ladened with choirs and rich strings. The common repetoire on this album are enjoyable and perfectly suited for his voice. Dynamics on his voice are more appearent than ever. This dramatic voice has a nice top in my opinion, and you can hear that he is a verdian tenor. His interpretations are a bit to dogmatic for my taste, but to his defense he does not over embellish, but does exactly what is needed. I will go out in a limb by saying the more I have listened to his new album the more I am getting convinced that the new kid on the block is a strong candidate for the future of opera. He has that retro tenor sound that is reminicient of Del Monaco. He has grown vocally since the last time I have seen him, and I believe that he is here to stay.

5 out of 5 stars Worthy of praise.......2006-11-22

While I enjoyed Salvatore Licitra's "Duetto" with Marcelo Alvarez more, I do enjoy too this new CD. While Licitra's voice appears to be more suited for baritone, by exceeding his limits and braving tenor he has brought a truly beautiful masculine feel to the "male high song-voice".

3 out of 5 stars Great beginning, typical ep trappings end.......2006-10-03

3 1/2

Great first half, captures Deathcab doing what they do best, much less effortlessly then in recent times. Last few songs die down a bit since the last is just an alternate, which makes this essential for fans, but not everyone, although quite good ep.

4 out of 5 stars Visual, Visceral, Cinematic Songs.......2006-07-27

Much like their following full length Photo Album, Forbidden Love is five cinematic snapshots of things slightly unrequited. "Deadcab for what?" was my reaction when the owner of a local indy record store first brought this EP into the coffeeshop where i worked in 2000, which seems like a hopelessly naive reaction after a half-decade when Ben Gibbard and company have proven themselves to be one of the most solid groups of songwriters in modern rock.

The lyrics of "Photobooth" tumble out over a tinny drum loop like a series of those tiny square photos from a tiny curtained room. Each line conjures a picture of skinny-dipping or living out on the lawn as a friendship veers into summer love and then just as quickly veers out, leaving just that strip of pictures to document the moment of shared longing.

"405" could be about the same relationship, but rather than focusing on an artifact it peers across the distance between the two actors, now represented by the distance of a lengthy highway. This acoustic take offers a vastly different mood than the electric album version - the bouncy guitar picking and Ben's delicate delivery is immediately reminiscent of Elliott Smith.

It's hard to describe what about each of these five Death Cab For Cutie songs makes them so visually evocative. The songs are exactly like movies - not about a theme or a riff or even a single line of dialogue, but about the the story they allow you to voyeuristically live in for a brief four minutes. It's something about a focus on details like floorboards and wedding cakes, lips and fiber optics, while guitars and keyboards are woven together to form an impenetrable bed of rolling electric noise for reminisced lyrics to glide over.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Indie Pop Rock.......2006-02-03

After We Have The Facts, DCFC released the five song Forbidden Love EP. "Photobooth" is arguably the greatest DCFC song yet. A catchy, poppy, ballad about love lost, Photobooth captures such a timeless quality-everything that makes DCFC such a great band. Technicolor Girls is another original song that demonstrates their talent for meandering guitar riffs and heartfelt lyrics, "Song For Kelly Huckaby" is another original that is the second strongest song on the album. Ben Gibbard's hauntingly delicate voice has never been more powerful. Layered over heavy but delicate percussion, this song is the most raw. Two of the strongest songs From "We Have The Facts" are Featured- An Acoustic version of 405 is very well done, and an alternate take of Company Calls Epilogue which I think is more successful than the first release. Definetely a must have for fans and highly recommended for everyone.

4 out of 5 stars Good for fans, and maybe others .......2005-10-11

Before I review this EP, you might want to know about my credentials. I am not now, or ever have been: a fan of indie. I have known about this band for quite some time now. But, I never really stopped to take a good listen. After a while though, their prescence got the best of me, and I decided to purchase this EP to see what these dudes were all about, and what a pleasant experience it was.

The disc opens up with the catchy technical drumbeat intro of "photobooth". A song littered with mellow keyboards, calming guitar picking and lyrically soothing goodness. I quickly decided that simply because of that one song, this band was a winner. I realize that photobooth is in most people's oppinion the best on here, but it's enough to make this CD worthwhile. As for the other tracks... Well, i'm getting to them.

After photobooth comes the even slower and less upbeat "technicolor girls". For some reason this song didn't do it for me. I suspect that's because I'm used to much more upbeat stuff. (I.E. punk, hardcore) I'd like to think that fans of indie rock would like this very much.
Next in line if the drawny "Song for Kelly Huckaby". This track in my oppinion has some very fine guitarwork and nice vocal effects. It's sort of sad like the last two songs but still gets me smiling.

"405" is an acoustic relapse of another Death cab song I havent even heard. I enjoyed it greatly and was glad to hear a happier and upbeat song on here. Lastly, Company calls finishes up this EP. The drumbeat on here is really cool and lyrics really standout from the rest. All in all a great finisher.

I found that this EP was a bit more mellow and poppy than their other stuff I've heard, which sounds more indie-rockish. I'm glad I bought this, I even went on to purchase "we have the facts" a couple weeks after. Although this isn't a genre a music I particularly spend a lot of time in, I think anyone can enjoy these songs, no matter what their tastes. there wasn't a single song here that I didn't enjoy in some way. I would also recommend this highly to anyone wanting to get into this band, but don't know where to start.

7/10 score for catchy vibes, good lyrics, and some innovation here and there. Very flattering EP...

5 out of 5 stars Pure Atmospheric Awsomeness........2007-01-11

A "Must Have" for any Lovecraftian fan, afficianado...Or even if you just like creepy background music. Amid the haunting scores are several well done quotes from the fabled Lovecraftian tome, a chant to Nyarlathotep and the infamous "Ia Cthulhu Phtagn" passage done with 'proper' reverence and fanatascism. Definitely a "mood music" CD but one that sets the mood it intends very well

5 out of 5 stars A musical tribute to H.P. Lovecraft.......2006-11-06

In this, the second CD realease from Nox Arcana, the focus is on Lovecraft and his works. The music explores the deities that roamed the earth when men lived in darkness and served these Gods as slaves. The listener is taken through a musical journey that explores the visions of Alhazred, the Mad Arab. The mythos of the Necronomicon takes you to the realms of Azathoth, Yog-Sothoth, Dagon, and Cthulhu.

I highly recommend this for anyone who has a healthy respect for myth, and can appreciate the dark musical talents of these gifted people. I certainly do.

5 out of 5 stars The Mythos comes alive!.......2006-10-31

This is the perfect companion for sitting down and reading the works of Lovecraft. It makes for wonderful ambience! Excellent.

5 out of 5 stars A Masterful Musical Depiction Of A Terrifying Tome.......2006-09-27

Not long ere this time, we were taken on a journey through the haunted halls of a ruined Victiorian mansion, home of the notorious Darklore family. Now we are invited to once again pay heed to the call of Nox Arcana... masterful and peerless minstrels of the macabre, as they invite us to walk with them once more. This time our journey is into a horrifying yet captivating musical opus depicting the pages of the mythos long ago scrawled by H.P. Lovecraft. Before you now lies, related to us in music, the ancient tome of the Necronomicon. Do you dare to open its pages and gaze upon them?

1. Mythos - Here we stand, at the beginning of a new journey, into both terror and wonder. It is begun with the sound of a howling wind. That frigid gale seems to have a keening quality to it, a moaning sound if you like, and a touch of faint "rumbling". It is soon joined by mournful yet melodious male chorus. Over this floats another voice, that of co-composer Joseph Vargo. He assumes the role of 'storyteller' for us once more, relating for us the following preamble:

"Long before mankind existed, the Old Ones trod upon the Earth. They worshipped the elder gods and served them as slaves, but in time, the Old Ones gained the knowledge of dark magic, and dared to use their sinister powers against their masters. The wrath of the elder gods was merciless and terrible, and those who rebelled against them were banished to distant dimensions, and imprisoned within the darkest recesses of the Earth. In deathless sleep the Old Ones dream and lie in wait for the time when they shall rise again. For when the stars come right, they shall awaken from their eon-old slumber. Then shall they return to hold dominion over our world once more, bringing woe and destruction unto mankind."

2. The Nameless City - This piece to me is beautiful. It depicts for me a wondrous journey to an unknown place, both dark and splendid. The piece is begun with a melding of what sounds like flutes combined with keyboard work whose tone is strongly choral in nature. It conveys a feeling of dread and awe together. Soon, percussion and strings join in with beautiful choir to complete the piece. The pacing is not quite a march-like one, but slightly quicker... depicting travel. In my mind I visualize traversing a desert amidst a raging sandstorm, and then crossing a turbulent waterway to behold an ancient city alive with dark and brooding majesty.

3. Alhazred's Vision - This piece has a very adventurous feeling to it. It seems to be a companion piece to track two but that's a good thing. Brooding strings and purcussion are joined by the tambourine to give it a more exotic flavor. Majestic choir returns to the piece in a way that gives it a very nice completion and fleshing out.

4. Necronomicon- Here, it seems, we are given a thematic piece. Haunting keyboards and sinister choral work pay us a visit to reprise and expand on the tune from the first track, making it the "star" of this piece rather than an undercurrent to narration. This is a good thing. It depicts in music the Necronomicon itself and is a more than fitting theme for a tome whose ancient pages are replete with dark wonders and ghastly secrets.

5. Ancient Shadows - Percussion, keyboards and strings do another dance for us. Choral accents here are very strong and powerful. As I close my eyes here, I can conceive in my mind an image of a barren land with a flame-red sky, slowly being swallowed by gathering stormclouds. It's a very strong piece and a great mood-setter for the terror to come.

6. Azathoth - This piece is a description of one of what Lovecraft's mythos refers to as the Great Old Ones. We are treated to a macabre choral melody over which Joseph Vargo's own voice gently drifts telling us of this creature : "From his black throne at the center of ultimate chaos, Azathoth, lord of madness and the abyss, rules supreme over all time and space... for he is the master of all that dwells in the darkness."

7. The Black Throne - Darker and darker it seems do we get. Ominous chorals and percussion mate with keyboards and tolling bells. To me, this piece blends terror and majesty in a manner that I might only call completely flawless.

8. Nyarlahotep- Here is another descriptive piece. Once again beautiful keyboard work with choral accents joins Joseph Vargo's hypnotic narration as we hear him say: "To Nyarlahotep must all things be told, for he is the traveller between the spheres, and the messenger between the realms of the living and the dead. He shall summon forth the ancient ones, and wake them from their deathless slumber. Then shall the Elder Signs be shattered, and the lords of darkness be released."

9. Temple Of The Black Pharoah - If I had to use one word to describe this piece, that word would be exotic. It is a beautiful piece, comprised of soft keyboard wizardry and chorals, mated with Egyptian style percussion and mysterious chanting. Part of it for a while sounds like pan pipes were used, at the beginning perhaps. Again I visualize crossing a river in a rustic canoe and coming to an ancient temple, a site to inspire both terror and awe being rooted deep within the heart of any who see it.

10. Eldritch Rites - Here, we are given a dose of the ominous and the sinister. This is a "simple" piece but I say that in a good way. It is a genuinely frightening vignette, given to us in a simple manner...proving that sometimes less is indeed more. A chilling sound, a resonant gong... is joined by brooding male chorals. They are overlaid by the voice of Joseph Vargo performing what appears to be an incantion of sorts... one that seems to summon the Great Old Ones by name, to bring them back from their deathless sleep.

11. The Haunter Of The Dark - This piece to me is scary but beautiful. A tolling bell is coupled with ominous choral melody and darkly majestic keyboard work and strings. Pipe organ compliments and fits into the piece wonderfully. The impression is one of being watched and stalked by a relentless and unstoppable force. The thunderclap at the end is an awesome touch and welcome indeed. Beautiful work.

12. The Awakening - "That is not dead which can eternal lie... and with strange eons even death may die." With this famous line from Lovecraft does the hypnotic narrating voice of Joseph Vargo introduce us to this piece. Heartbeat-like percussion soon drifts in, coupled with the steady, swirling sound of strings. Compelling choir soon makes its prescence known to us. I would name this one "invigorating". It's pace is march-like, and it carries a quite epic feel.

13. Yog Sothoth- Another homage to one of the Great Old Ones. Stately percussion and a soft but deep and resonant gong are the backdrop. Joseph Vargo's narrative voice joins us once more, as if telling a chilling tale of imminent catastrophe that merely awaits the right moment to fall upon us. "From across the black seas of infinity and beyond the mists of time, Yog Sothoth watches and waits. For he is the guadian of the gateway between worlds, and he alone holds the key to unlock the gate. For when the ancient rites have been spoken, and the lords of darkness have been awakened and summoned forth, then shall the gateway between the stars open once more. Past, present, future... All are one in Yog Sothoth."

14. Guardian Of The Gate - Here, keyboards and strings begin a new waltz for us. The strings swirl about us, as if driving us closer to the heart of a violent tempest. Darkly regal choir joins in. The tempo of these choral parts in particular, provide "spikes" of tension, as if the bolts on a great portal are being ever so slowly but surely and inevitably drawn back... it is only a matter of time before our worst nightmares come to pass.

15. Lords Of Darkness- This one is comprised of steadily paced strings, percussion and tolling bells. Choral majesty gifts us with its prescence also. This brings to mind a macabre twist on a kingly procession. It further lets us know that, all too soon... our nightmares will be real.

16. Dagon - Yet another description is given to us here... a piece of heraldry. Subtle keyboard wizardry combines with a choral moan of sorts. Joseph Vargo's voice chimes in once more: "Behold mighty Dagon... the great leviathan, risen from the black depths of the eternal sea. For he is the avatar of Cthulhu, who lies dreaming in deathless slumber... in his ancient temple in Ryleh."

17. The Stars Allign - Once again do ominous percussion and strings return to us here. Keyboards come in as well, feeling almost like horns heralding a great catastrophe. Snare drums make an effective appearance as well. This is yet another sign that our time is running out, even faster than it appeared to be doing so beforehand.

18. Cthulhu- Yet another gripping piece of descriptive homage. Choral work reminiscent of monastic chanting is joined by Joseph Vargo narrating for us very effectively. "Hail mighty Cthulhu, High Priest of the Great Old Ones. For when the stars come right, he shall rise from his ancient tomb to signal their return. Then shall the ancient ones long ago banished to the outer spheres break free from their prisons and plunge from the stars to claim the Earth once more. For those who lurk at the threshold of our world are ever vigilant for the time of their return."

19. Rite Of Summoning- This piece is just what the title suggests. Again, it is simple, yet it is also quite chillingly effective. Joseph Vargo returns yet again. This time he assumes the role of one who summons the great Cthulhu from his deathless slumber. His vocal performance is augmented really quite nicely by keyboard work that essentially gives us a dread inducing series of choral moans or a "howling wind" effect.

20. Cthulhu Rising - Keyboards, percussion and strings combine here with choral work to comprise a sinister yet stately and regal march. At long last does Chtulu awaken. The twilight of man is come. Alas and woe, the last hour is struck. All that remains is the fading of the last vesper toll into the midnight sky... and our time will cease upon this world.

21. The Great Old Ones- This piece, the CD's closer, could be called a companion piece to track 20. Again, it is martial in nature, expertly blending percussion, chorals, keyboards and strings. To me, it is a culmination... an expert depiction as Earth is swarmed and overtaken by a relentless tide of "invaders"... members of an ancient species of dark and malevolent beings. The first section of the piece is ended by what sounds like screeching bats or some other similar type of creature. There is then a fairly long period of silence until Joseph Vargo narrates for us once again: "From the wells of night to the gulfs of space let it be known: The Old Ones were, the Old Ones are, and the Old Ones shall be. Azathoth, Shug Ngurrub, Zath Ogwah, Nyarlahotep, Yog Sothoth, Dagon, Cthulhu... Man rules now where they ruled once. They wait patient and potent... for here shall they reign again..." There is another short narration at the very end of this track Honestly, if I could change anything about this piece, it would be the length of time that stands betwen then end of the musical section of the track and the first of the two narrations. It does not take away from the quality of the piece, but it is noticable and I wish it had been shortened a bit.

In closing, this is yet another brilliant piece of work by Nox Arcana. A truly terrifying tale of the imminent twillight and fall of the human race. Any fan of the writings of H.P. Lovecraft should love this, but you do not need to be a fan of Lovecraft's writing in order to enjoy it immensely. I love this work as much as all others by Nox Arcana. They are true masters of the art of musical storytelling... weavers of majestically epic horror tales, and truly gifted minstrels for the modern age.

5 out of 5 stars Simply Brilliant.......2006-08-09

This is a hypnotic, dark symphony that perfectly captures the mood of the Lovecraftian Mythos. Listen to this in the quiet of night and be transported (metaphorically) across the vast gulfs of space and time to where great Cthulhu lies dreaming. This is the best HPL music I have ever heard, better than the music of Eric Zann.

3 out of 5 stars Sountrack to Adventures in the FORBIDDEN ZONE!...Keyword ADVENTURES!.......2007-01-29

I was lucky enough to have Danny Elfman (Theme of THE SIMPSONS) autograph a copy of the LP at a BOINGO performance at Club Rogues in Virginia Beach.

If you're the type guy, or gal, that likes 'QUIRK;' this is the ablum for YOU!

There are a few songs on here, the Alphabet Song (from 3 Stooges) and Squeezit the Moocher (performed by Danny Elfman as SATAN!) that are straight out of Dr. Demento-type archives. Other songs are original for the soundtrack, the result is a WIERD, ECLECTIC, EXPERIMENTAL, Mish-Mash of styles and qualities that leaves the listener confused, satisfied, stunned, shocked and mildly-aroused.

Like a train wreck, your ears can't look-away! You have to listen to how bad it is, and how (like BOINGO)strangely refreshing it is. (I mean, I heard a SLOT MACHINE, that had a vamp that sounded like something from EMPIRE STRIKES BACK...for KRINE out loud!) When you have the opportunity to get eclectic, fresh, artsy-fottsy, vintage anomolious, vapidly performed entertainment, you either DIVE IN AND LOVE IT LIKE ME...or go, get a beer, and turn on CMT or something equally repetetive (a.k.a. BORING.)

The movie is wierd to watch too, Susan Tyrell's cleavage is worth the price of a ticket, oh, there it is on the album cover, it's worth the price of the album/CD/Poster/DVD too!he-he... (saw a print screened at NARO EXPANDED CINEMA, Norfolk VA/USA. ARF: Art Repertoire Films)

"Pico and Sepulveda" and "La Petite Tonkinoise" have vanished from the CD version. Josephine Baker's "Tonkinoise" is readily available on anthologies of her music, but just TRY to find ANYTHING by Felix Figueroa and his Orchestra. "Pico and Sepulveda" is one of my favorite songs from the movie (which in itself is an all-time favorite) and its absence here is a major disappointment. That being said, what remains is great, and the CD is worth having, but hang onto the original LP if you're lucky enough to have it, otherwise you'll be missing two of the film's musical high points.

I am a great fan of the movie, and i have the soundtrack-BUT WHERE THE HECK IS FRENCHY'S 'LE PETITE TONKINOISE"?..I have the lp and its on that-why,oh why is it missing from the cd?And who made the original?

4 out of 5 stars No need to be stoned for this...........2006-04-24

Put yer bongs n papers away, people. This film and it's music will be enough weirdness to take you there. What a trip. One should indeed see the film before getting the CD, I think. And if you're missing the Pico and Sepulveda song, download the version done by Lee Press On and the Nails. iTunes has it. Not the original, but close enough for me for now. So watch the flick, buy this CD and mark a notch on your cult classic post.

3 out of 5 stars Where in the world is Pico and Sepulveda, Pico and Sepulveda..........2005-11-22

Unfortunately, that song isn't included on the soundtrack cd.

I bought all four of these 2 on 1 CD's from Scamp years ago when they first came out. They're all excellent.I love this one particularly for the extensive use of exotic musical instruments from every corner of the globe. These two albums are primarily led by the mallet percussion instruments with very little piano. The birdcalls are excellent;"Goony Birds"is one of the best songs.Every song is good. The melodies are beautiful and complex. The arrangements for this small group, featuring such exotic instrumentation, are brilliant. This group uses gongs, tam tams, drums, birdcalls, whistles, bells, bowls, japanese samisen(a stringed instrument)and much more with such artistry not heard since Spike Jones! This is truly what should be called "Exotica".
