Customer Reviews:
tech rebut.......2005-04-30
I read the first review of this album while listening to poor quality previews on good headphones. It sounded fine, contrary to the opinion of the piano tech. I decided to ignore the review and buy the cd. I was not disappointed. First from a purely "sound quality" point of view this cd compares very favourably to a steinway played by Benny Green and recorded by Rudy von Gelder. The Yamaha is a tad brighter, but not objectionably so. Then there's the performance. It is almost too good. Chick casts an incredible spell that you just don't want to end. Please don't be discouraged by the tech babble review: this is a sterling performance by any standard.
Poor Piano meets Poor Recording Technique.......2002-12-05
As a registered piano technician with a background in sound recording, I wish I could write about the content of this CD, but I could not finish listening to it because of how badly the piano sounds.
There is a common myth that runs, "Yamaha pianos are bright but shallow; Steinway pianos have a deep and powerful 'American' sound". If there is any truth to this saying, it could just as well have originated from the CD in question. In any case, this is the kind of recording that will keep Steinway & Sons sales going strong.
According to the liner notes, a Yamaha S-CF III Concert Grand was used by the artist, but in my experience as a concert tuner this particular instrument hardly represents Yamaha pianos adequately. The upper range sounds metallic and harsh, with noticeable string buzzes emanating from the cast iron plate and brass agraffes; the bass is totally lacking in depth and power, and the overall dynamics are very narrow. There is fortissimo, forte, pianissimo-but never piano. If I were to hazard a guess, it sounds like a typical used or abused music college piano that had been beaten upon for many years.
The recording engineer's method of miking the piano is also objectionable. The microphones have been placed extremely close to the soundboard of the piano, and in such a directional way as to cause all bass notes to come from the left channel and all treble notes from the right channel. Although this is to some extent how it sounds to the piano player, a piano is never experienced as such by a listener any distance away. What this peculiar placement serves up is exactly the opposite of how a piano sounds in a club, a concert hall, or any kind of room at all. As a result, sonic images fly unnervingly from side to side during runs-as if the piano itself were moving in front of the listener.
Overall, one gets the feeling that this CD was hastily recorded by amateurs, and that the final mix was never approved by the artist in the form it has been issued. The result would have been entirely different had the $100,000 plus concert grand been prepared as it should have been, and a competent engineer, who was no stranger to recording pianos, been hired. Considering the worldwide efforts of the Yamaha Corporation to raise their esteem in serious musical circles, they seem to have shot themselves in the foot with this one. It has to go down as one of those unfortunate releases that languish on the shelves and make the occasional listener wonder who was asleep at the wheel.
Simply wonderful.......1998-09-14
One of the best ever listened Chic performances. No matter if you are blue or fine this is anyway a perfect CD. Chic has the ability to make his piano talk to our soul.

Beautiful..........2002-03-29
I bought this album for Thomas Canning's "Hymn" after hearing the piece in the play "Worksong: Three Views of Frank Lloyd Wright". During the show, it was used in such a haunting fashion that listening to it along with the on stage action was enough to bring shivers to your body and goosebumps to your skin. It's one of my favorite classical pieces of music...

Grimy, rough and spiritual.........2007-04-03
The Beats:
Dark, bass laden with unique twists and turns. Madlib made these with PASSOIN. These are the types of track I always WANT to hear but can never find. Well, here they are.
The Rhymes:
Dudley's appeal is his vulnerability. I read some reviews that basically stated that Madlib wasted his beats on Dudley. I beleive just the opposite. His voice is unique and he loves God and is not afraid to be vulnerable.
If you want raps about money, women, cars, dime bags and guns..please move on. This is for the grown folks. Can't wait to buy A Lil Light..
Future Smooth Groove(s).......2007-02-28
I really enjoyed D.P. aka Declaime on this stand out LP .. Lots of funky head nodding cerebral tracks here. Enough to make you play it over and over again.. Madlib must really like this cat to give him such a good beat selection..
Stand out tracks are:
3. Testin' Me
8. Separate Ways
9. Dolla Bill
10. Inside
And the stand out tack on this album is 5. "Come Here My Dear" -- You will see once you play this one.
All in all worth the 15 dollars (4 stars)
Funky Fresh in the Flesh Soul Hip-Hop.......2006-05-14
Dudley Perkins is back on his second coming of soulful and introspective grooves on Expressions. I thought this album was great and a breath of fresh air not your typical hip-hop album. It definitely was better than his last album A Lil Bit.I think Madlib came through with the funky beats he's know for this time round to give the listener more than he payed 4. As well as giving Dudley Perkins the right soundtrack to flow 2 with his spoken word slash soulful rhymes. Yo if you love real hip-hop and soul this is the album to get you won't be disappointed.

Another classic.......2006-05-31
In the arts the term 'classic' refers to a work that you keep on having to come back to because you can never quite get your head around it. Thus, 'classics' are written by the especially gifted who resist cheap pigeon-holing. Schenker is like this - his music is definitely 'hard rock', but beyond that he resists easy categorisation. His works have so much going on in them that there is normally more to hear even after multiple listens. Dreams and Expressions is no exception to this. At first one might think it less immediately impacting than your average instrumental electric guitar album. Many shredders seem able to initially create a momentary 'wow' factor that instantly catches the ear but which then rapidly fades to a 'boredom' factor. It's not like this with Schenker or with Dreams and Expressions. It's more like on first listen a small seed is planted. One is perhaps not blown away but more intrigued. So, one listens again and the seed grows. Getting more interested, the listener listens a third time and the seed starts to grow big time. Soon, one has a whole rain forest to contend with - something that it's hard ever to get bored with. Dreams and Expressions just keeps 'moving on' and changing things before any boredom can set in. I'm still hearing fresh things now after dozons of listens. It's heavy, melodic, eclectic, joyful, technical, and genre-redefining. One does not miss a vocalist, but if a vocalist is required get 'Tales of Rock n Roll' which has some affinities with Dreams and Expressions but with vocal parts added. Both albums are classics from the world's best rock guitarist. If the average generic shredder seeks to make an IMpression (which presupposes only vanity), Schenker definitely seeks to create an EXpression (which presupposes the whole richness of what it means to be a human being at the same time as risking rejection through not playing the game of simply 'trying to impress'). So, Dreams and Expressions is very aptly named.
quit now.......2005-09-25
if you're a guitarist, put your guitar down now and order this album!!!! don't pick that axe back up yet......listen to this album closely. if your goal is to be a great guitarist, listen to this album more. if your goal is to be the worlds best guitarist and an artist who will one day create not only a masterpiece, but also to demonstrate a mastery of the brush, the canvas and the paint used in the process.......forget it! mr. schenker beat ya to it!!!
Not as good as "Adventures", but still fun.......2005-03-05
Hard to follow what I thought was a perfect album ("Adventures in Imagination"), but MS does a pretty good job. This is more of a concept album. I think his hardcore fans will probably enjoy it more than some people not familiar with Michael. I have to admit, I was thrown by the production. Some songs are broken up into very small bits and end when you would not think they would. However, the mind-altering guitar work is still there. I pray this guy keeps making records like this. No offense, but I think UFO and MSG have outlived their shelf-life. Michael as a solo player, with no singer, is what I like best.
another set of great riffs.......2004-03-21
i have heard him on ufo,,,,, msg and now on this cd,,,,, the best track is number 8 :lightning riffs: will now require a relisten to the cassettes with macauley to get the fine points,
this is an interesting cd and will take careful attention to get all the notes and sequences. As others have said he uses a variety of moods , rhythms ,,,,,,, i imagine at many concerts he expands on the basic themes of any of these cuts..... remember : number 8 is the best one on this
No need for a vocalist.......2004-01-13
In this follow up to his first electric instrumental album (the excellent "Adventures of the Imagination"), Michael ties together a series of 21 "songlets". Basically musical ideas and themes that he came up with while fiddling around with his guitar, these are edited together to create what is probably the best heavy metal backround album of all time. Released to help pay for the building of his studio (which his now ex wife promptly stole from him), this is more of a one off album for people who are already fans. That is not to say that the uninitiated will not enjoy hearing a man who is more creative and expressive with a one minute musical statement than most bands are with entire albums. Feel free to read that last sentence again so that it can sink in. Backed by the ever impressive Barry Sparks on bass and Shane Gaalaas on drums, this is a great high energy album to drive home from work with.

Customer Reviews:
Messianic praise to God how great is that!!.......2005-10-08
The songs from the CD One From Many by Echad have a Jewish/Spanish flavor to the music. Song Echad speaks of Jewish/Christian unity in Yeshua/Jesus. Guitars and bongos add a unique beat to Messianic music. I really liked many of the songs. Baruch Sheamar is one of my favorites, a song that "Blesses" God. It has a smooth upbeat rhythm blessing God and singing of God's mercy. The female singer has a soothing voice with background singers echoing "Baruch" I really love it. Another favorite of mine is Eitz Chayim. The words "He is the tree of life". The beat is like Klezmer music it makes you want to dance like they did in Fiddler on the Roof. The song is cheerful with the flute, drums and guitar so Jewish so much fun. The art work on the CD is also touching with a Jewish man praying at the Wall (one of the songs). I recommend this CD for its soothing and prayerful affect it has when listening to it but mostly that it honors and praises the most high God.
