Album Description

Two of the soul great's albums paired together, 1971's top 30 'Curtis/ Live!' and 1973's 'Curtis In Chicago'. The latter title is the soundtrack to the special musical show that Chicago TV station WTTW aired in 1973 & it features live performances by Mayfield with members of various line-ups of his previous group, The Impressions, plus Jerry Butler, Gene Chandler & others. It includes the hit single 'If I Were Only A Child Again' and the Impressions rendition of 'Amen'. Both albums were first released on Mayfield's Curtom label. A combined total of 22 tracks. Also features the original cover art of each. Double slimline jewel case. 1999 release.

Curtis gems.......2000-01-29

What a wonderful set of albums.Not perfect,but sincere and well done.My favorite of the 2,We Come In Peace with A Message of Love,came out on a tiny label in 85,and is a bizarre collection.There's disco(Bodyguard),funk(Breakin in the Streets),and tons of nice ballads.The only weak spot is a remake of We Gotta Have Peace(originally on Roots).Otherwise,very nice.Now,onto Take it to the Streets.Sadly,our last chance to hear Curtis produce and play guitar on an entire collection,this is a soulful collection.Although filled with synths and drum machines,it still is gorgeous.Thank you Sequel for re-issueing these wonderful records!

Two Underrated Curtis Gems.......2005-07-29

It is my experience that when discussing the genious of Curtis Mayfield, most people tend to refer only to his work during the highly praised early to mid-70's era. I was very much the same way myself until a compilation album opened up my eyes for his later material, especially that which can be found on this two disc compilation.

Released in 1979 and 1980, Heartbeat and Something to Believe In shows a Curtis fully able to master the slick and groovy sounds of the pre-disco era without comprimising his trademark soulful voice and wonderful melodies.

Tracks such as "Never Stop Loving Me", "You're So Good To Me" or "Trippin' Out" (later covered by Camp Lo on their hit Black Nostaljack) are all masterpieces of sexy, groovy late 70:s soul.

I have listened to quite a lot of late seventies soul and it is my opinion that Curtis' contributions from theese two albums are no less than state of the art classics.
