As musical activists in the 1960s civil rights movement, the Staple Singers were powerful voices for equality and change. And more than 40 years after Pops's daughter Mavis spent a night in a West Memphis, Arkansas, jail at the behest of a racist cop, she still remembers the terror of the experience, as well as the counsel of Dr. Martin Luther King. That episode is at the centerpiece of "My Own Eyes," one of the most moving offerings on this collection of songs of racial struggle in the '50s and '60s, produced by guitarist Ry Cooder and featuring backing from the original Freedom Singers and Ladysmith Black Mambazo. Throughout, the album proves both emotionally chilling and spiritually uplifting. On J.B. Lenoir's "Down in Mississippi" and Marshall Jones's "In the Mississippi River," for example, Cooder makes fine use of pounding percussion and snaky electric guitar to capture the danger and fear inherent in the Deep South at the time, while the title song and "Jesus Is on the Main Line" draw on gospel and the traditional framework of church hymns to promise positive solutions. Staples, who adlibs on several cuts, connecting the injustice of yesterday to the continuing marginalization of blacks in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, remains a remarkable performer, employing a throaty sensuality that rises from a deep well of tremulous emotion. If her album is musically uneven at times, her artistry and strength continue to shine as undimmed beacons. --Alanna Nash

The Staple Singers: Greatest Hits

Album Description

From the liner notes, by John Lewis:

When I listen to this music, it takes me back. It takes me back to the red clay hills of Georgia, to the Black Belt of Alabama, and the Delta of Mississippi. It takes me back to the moans and groans and pains of an oppressed people yearning for freedom. It takes me back to the time when hundreds and thousands of us decided we were "sick and tired of being sick and tired," as Fannie Lou Hamer said. It takes me back to the days when ordinary people inspired by a dream decided to quench our hunger and thirst for justice in the fountains of mercy and love.

Back then, some people thought legalized segregation in America would never come to an end. But those of us in the Civil Rights Movement were inspired by a higher calling. And even if it cost us our very lives, "we weren't gone to let nobody turn us `round". We believed that the action of peace, the way of non-violence, and the power of love could overcome our oppression and remind our oppressors of their own humanity. Through the power of this faith our nation witnessed a non-violent revolution of values, a revolution of ideas that changed America forever.

The music you are listening to right now was the soul of that revolution. It was this music that gave us hope when it seemed like all hope was gone. It was the heartbeat of this music and its steady, reassuring message that bound us together as one solid force. So when we were beaten, arrested and jailed; when we stood together on picket lines or marched through the streets of the Deep South; when we faced the guns drawn, the billy clubs and the bullwhips raised; when we were teargassed, trampled by horses, or scattered by fire hoses, it was these songs that lifted us and pushed us to a higher place.

It is my hope that when you hear Mavis Staples, when you hear the Freedom Singers, and the other artists on this CD, that you too will be inspired. I hope this music will help you find the courage to stand up, speak up, and speak out and answer the call of your own conscience. It is my hope that this music will help you see what ordinary people with extraordinary vision can do when they decide they will never turn back.

Rep. John Lewis

4 out of 5 stars We'll never turn back.......2007-07-05

I enjoyed this cd very much. I had listened to the Staples singers years ago and was glad to see Mavis recording again.

5 out of 5 stars Mavis Staples rules.......2007-06-28

This is one fantastic recording. Mavis has a magnificent voice . . . perfect for the songs and full of depth and determination. The musicians notably ry cooder and back up singers are up to the task as well. Mavis let her light shine brightly!!

3 out of 5 stars quafable but not transcendent.......2007-06-27

This is a solid album, similar in tone to the recent retreads by the Blind Boys of Alabama and John Hammond. The historical and emotional baggage it carries help one to listen with a sympathetic ear, and perhaps lend it more pathos than is earned strictly on aesthetic merits.

3 out of 5 stars Yes and no.......2007-06-27

A tribute to the legacy of the Civil Rights movement and the Staple Singers themselves. Doesn't really live up to the hype, though. Mavis has still got the drive and passion, but her voice doesn't have the range and nuance.

5 out of 5 stars Passion and soul.......2007-06-26

Mavis Staples sings with passion and true soul the songs of the Civil Rights movement on "We'll Never Turn Back". The CD has all the sounds of a great Ry Cooder CD too because he did arrangements of many of the songs and he plays on them too. This CD's version of "This Little Light of Mine" shows what can be done respectfully to bring a whole new sound to an old song. This CD really deserves 5 stars.

The least you can say about Taylor Hicks is that he's not like prior American Idol champs: he already had almost a decade of gigging in bars when he won the fifth season in 2006, complete with songwriting experience, an ability to play harmonica and guitar, and a pair of self-released albums. On his major-label debut, the Silver Fox settles in a plush, comfortable sound framed by vintage-sounding soul and R&B, as well as classic rock--it's comfort food for the ears. The one thing that's not here is Hicks's first single, "Do I Make You Proud." Other than that, the songs are a well-balanced mix of oldies (Marvin Gaye's "Wherever I Lay My Hat"), newbies that sound like oldies (Rob Thomas's "Dream Myself Awake," Bryan Adams's "The Right Place"), the obligatory Diane Warren ballad ("Places I've Been"), and some party-fun anthems ("The Runaround," "Heaven Knows"). This last track actually is one of two paying tribute to Hicks's patron saint, Ray Charles--it references the piano riff from "What'd I Say," while "The Right Place" was originally written for Charles. Clearly, there are worse people to look up to. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

5 out of 5 stars Taylor Hicks is the REAL deal!.......2007-07-30

Taylor Hicks is the real deal. There are no compromises on this CD. Every track is straight-forward. "Wherever I Lay My Hat", "Places I've Been", "The Right Place" and "Soul Thing" are my favorites. I find myself humming Taylor's tunes throughout the day. This CD not only has soul it rolls!

1 out of 5 stars This Is Not Soul Music.......2007-07-16

After listening to every song on this CD, I can understand why Taylor Hicks has not found success in the music industry. The songs all sound very outdated, and should be labeled as 70's pop, not soul, as others are claiming in their reviews. If you thought this CD would have the type of music that Taylor performed on AI or on his previous two CD's, then expect to be disapointed. If you didn't think that, then still expect to be disapointed because this CD just isn't good at all.

5 out of 5 stars IT'S A SOUL THING.......2007-07-16

I love this albums different dementions but all have that Soul Thing running thru them. His original song "Soul Thing" should have been the title to this CD. Love the man and his music.

5 out of 5 stars Channeling Van the Man.......2007-07-12

Taylor has his own style and originality. I was intrigued by him the minute I saw his first audition on AI. He's a star! I hope his career endures as I feel he has true passion and soul for his music. This album does NOT disappoint. I know I am drawn to him because I have become such a big Van Morrison fan and his music reminds me of Van's and I love the harmonica...go figure!

4 out of 5 stars Taylor Hicks CD.......2007-07-11

Pretty Good CD. Taylor Hicks is a good singer -- definitely a different style, but I still like his music and his personality.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful CD.......2007-05-06

Booker T & the MG's is one of my favorite groups. I've always thought their music is like combining the church organ with Clapton. I only wish they were doing more live work so that fans like myself could see them more. But since they aren't, this is a nice substitute.

5 out of 5 stars Classic rythmn and bl,ues.......2007-02-12

I was reminded of this music and went on the internet and bought it on your site. Awesome music. Good condition and received promptly.

5 out of 5 stars Classic.......2007-01-11

Green Onions and Chinese Checkers are enough reason to buy the CD. Both are classic songs that'll get you to say, "Hey, I like that song, but never knew what it was" - without the lyrics, you just don't know... As one of the great Memphis Sun Studios era backup bands, you've heard them play before, now listen to their sounds. The songs aren't completely original (even Green Onions owes homage to John Lee Hooker's Onions which came out roughly the same time) and the sound isn't wholey unfamiliar (you've heard them before as backup, you just don't know it) but the music is wholey fantastic. Pass another side of those Onions...

5 out of 5 stars My favorite for all times..........2006-08-24

The sound of Hammond embraces you at the first moment and the tune elevates you from your seat in seconds.. Definitely superb...

As a classic of decades, Green Onions is my No.1 road hit...

4 out of 5 stars Rhythm Section 101.......2005-09-13

Oh, how I wish 30 years ago when I was a young keyboardist I had been listening to these guys instead of prog rock. Like a basketball team that plays as a single unit instead of a jumble of one-on-one games, each member of Booker T & the MG's added one-quarter of the whole sound, with no one trying to be the star (even though each was capable of being just that). Anyone who wants to be a serious student of any rhythm section instrument, whether you're playing jazz, R&B, rock or whatever, should listen to these guys religiously and learn that it's not what you put in that matters, it's what you leave out. Listen to them by themselves, and then listen to them backing Sam and Dave, Wilson Pickett and especially Otis Redding, it doesn't get any better than that.

Memphis soul is some of the most exciting music ever recorded, one of America's most important contributions to 20th century music, and Booker T & the MG's single-handedly defined the sound.

More filling than the two Very Best CDs in the Otis Redding catalog, less hefty than the four-disc Otis! box, Dreams to Remember is a double set of highlights that's no doubt just what many new and old fans need. Mixing signature numbers such as "(Sittin' on) the Dock of the Bay" and "Respect" with lesser-known works of genius like "I Love You More Than Words Can Say" and "Trick or Treat," this package gives Redding his due once more--and in superfine style. --Rickey Wright

This is one of the best anthology cd's out the music is very soothing and it feels good to be able to sit back and reminisce.

5 out of 5 stars Soulfull, Food for soul.......2005-11-01

This compilation is a defination of Otis capability in expressing different experinciences and feelings for lovers,it is the epitomy of music that did not wane with the time, actually the quality of Otis Reddind music surpasses most of contemporary styles, the only shortcoming is that most of the tracks are short but the double CD's are worth the price
The man achieved a lot during the short span of his artistry, the world has lost a gem

5 out of 5 stars More than words can say..........2005-09-17

I bought this set a few years ago in a record store because I wanted to hear more by the "Dock of the Bay Guy". I ended up listening to both discs over and over again for the next five days, I couldn't get enough. The only reason you could possibly have for not getting this collection is because you've decided to go for "Otis!" the magnificent 4 disc boxed set.

5 out of 5 stars A worthwhile collection.......2005-08-30

I cannot tell you how long it has taken me to find this collection. I have searched for this for months, and today I finally found a copy -- $50 Canadian -- not cheap but worth every penny. It's a shame that it is so hard to find Otis Redding on CD. He is one of the greatest singers ever, and yet in this day and age of countless Britney and Mandy Moore collections, you are hard-pressed to find an Otis compilation. Some of the older ones are out there ("The Very Best Of" and "Ultimate") but they are not remastered and are not as comprehensive as this one.

"Dreams to Remember" is beautifully presented by Rhino, who continue to set the bar in compilations. All the tracks are top-notch including "These Arms of Mine" and "Love Man" (two favorites featured in the film "Dirty Dancing"), "Try A Little Tenderness", the extraordinary version of Sam Cooke's "A Change Is Gonna Come" and of course, "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay". There are also some live tracks, which are essential because Otis was highly regarded for his live performances.

If you are able to find this collection, I urge you to buy it. And I urge music stores to stock up on their Otis CDs! LOL

Like a rootsier Jimmy Buffett, Delbert McClinton is an established, hard-touring veteran whose audience doesn't expect from him too much out of the norm. Regardless, the Texan's quintessential mix of country, R&B, Tex-Mex, blues, honky-tonk, New Orleans bump, lounge jazz, and good-time rock and roll is durable enough to sustain a career, especially since nobody does it nearly as well as he does. In the spirit of "don't fix what isn't broken," this album of 13 McClinton originals preserves the established formula. But to his credit, the leathery-voiced singer, now in his mid-60s, never seems to be going through the motions. He delivers this good-natured Americana with gutsy enthusiasm and enough raw energy to power the ocean liner on one of his famous blues cruises. Just as comfortable tearing into the Stonesy rock of "Dead Wrong" as the soft, Spanish guitar-driven folk of "Down into Mexico"--a tale of a robbery/relationship gone bad that flawlessly mixes his tender and tough sides--McClinton revels in his element. Fiddles, sax, and pedal steel augment the arrangements, highlighting the country and blues at the heart of Cost of Living. All that's missing is the sweat, booze, and boisterous crowd that remain an integral aspect of McClinton's legendary shows. --Hal Horowitz

5 out of 5 stars Turn it UP!.......2007-01-04

Especially for the first track, "One Of The Fortunate Few"! (Did you do like me and buy the CD "One Of The Fortunate Few", thinking the song of the same name would be on it???). I also like very much the track "Two Step Too", which purty much sums up my own taste in musica. "I like to listen to the rock 'n roll, but I like to two step too"!

5 out of 5 stars His best album in years.......2006-10-12

I've been a Delbert fan for more than 20 years, and this is his best release in a long time. There is no voice like Delbert's; man, can he sing. From the raucous "Hammerhead Stew" to some welcome country songs like "Midnight Communion" and "Two Step Too" this CD rocks. As for those reviewers who dislike the country element here, they aren't true Delbert fans, since real aficiandos know that some of Delbert's early works were
good ole country (listen to "Victim Of Life's Circumstances"). The two best cuts here are "Down Into Mexico" (what a story!) and about the saddest song I've ever heard, "Kiss Her Once For Me." When you first listen to the latter, it's easy to assume it's about a lost girlfriend. It's not--it's about a dad who's kind of lost his daughter to the girl's mother, and as a divorced dad, this song breaks my heart. Go, Delbert!

5 out of 5 stars cost of living.......2006-08-31

I can find nothing bad about this cd. It's like Springsteen lyrics, guitar strains of Marty Robbins and maybe a little touch of John Fogerty. I can recall sitting in a bar thirty years ago with some of my military buds and listening to this kind of music, wishing we were someplace else. What memories this cd evolked! All in all I can say that Delbert McClinton is becoming part of my blues collection and will continue to add more.

5 out of 5 stars lone star star.......2006-03-19

Texas music is more than music from Texas. It's an alchemy of apparently disparate essences - blues, soul, rock'n'roll - and Delbert McClinton is a master chemist. Like his fellow Lone Star Staters Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown and Doug Sahm, McClinton's defiance of definition may have denied him a wider audience, but those who know him can consider themselves, to quote one of his songs, "one of the fortunate few". McClinton wrote most of the 13 songs here and anything he doesn't write he makes his own (I'll Change My Style, associated with Jimmy Reed, becomes wonderfully greasy swamp R&B). For tragic, noirish adventure with a femme fatale, try Down into Mexico ("Sherrie was a dancer / she was a schemer / we came up with a foolproof plan"). Those who have lost love will share the ache of Kiss Her Once For Me ("and there's a part of her life I won't be there to see / when you're holding her tonight, kiss her once for me"). McClinton just turned 65 and shows no sign of decline. Start here and work back to such gems as Genuine Cowhide (1976) and The Jealous Kind (1980). (This review appeared in The Age newspaper in Melbourne, Australia.)

1 out of 5 stars What a shame..........2006-03-14

This cannot be the real Delbert McClinton, all throw-away songs save one. When Delbert leaves. . .Delbert's gone.

Their harmonies are tight, echoed by thrilling horn riffs, bursts of guitar solos, and when it's all about to explode, they settle back with a ballad like "When Something Is Wrong with My Baby" that's every bit as moving as their uptempo tracks. This is what happens when church music goes clubbing. --Robert Gordon

I would love to review the item I ordered, but I never received it, and I have never received a refund!

4 out of 5 stars Nice.......2007-02-06

It's clearly an older disc, and it sounds like they dubbed it straight from the reel. I love that warm sound, especially with music like this.

5 out of 5 stars AND So Much More.......2007-01-10

The world of show business is not a place where shrinking violets bloom. On the contrary, it is known for bombast, opportunism, and egos larger and more gaseous than zeppelins.

Consequently it is rare indeed to find an act featuring two prodigious talents who have chosen to share billing equally. This extraordinary gesture of selflessness is indicated by the word - AND - which links the two names.

A small handful of examples comes to mind where two geniuses are paired. The Captain And Tennille, of course, The Fluorescent Leech And Eddie, and the late lamented duo, Wayland Flowers And Madame who, tragically, died simultaneously.

Add to this distinguished list the names, Sam And Dave. These powerhouse singers, who secured their place in history with a few hits covered by shabby second-stringers, simply define everything that is good about R&B. In fact, if you were beginning an R&B collection, this outstanding CD would be an excellent place to start.

You'll find barnburners like Soul Man and I Thank You, among many others, but you may be surprised how these guys work a ballad. The Best Of Sam AND Dave delivers the goods; and so much more.

5 out of 5 stars We got a good quality one, no "hissing".......2006-11-08

I have this one too - BEST OF SAM & DAVE, and although a couple other reviewers stated that there was hissing on the SOOTHE ME track, my copy does not have hissing or any other sound distortion. On the whole, this collection is a pretty good sampler of their rollin' best.

3 out of 5 stars Sam & Dave CD.......2006-06-26

I got what I ordered. The plastic case was broken. The CD Now preferred buyers club claims to have a link to report this type of claim. The link is a dead end. Service rates a single star. Another disc in the same order also had a broken case. The club should back up their products.

5 out of 5 stars Candi Staton.......2007-06-08

The best of Candi Staton's cd is very, very good. I love listening to all the songs. My favorite is "Young hearts run free". Her other 2 hits "Victim" and "When you wake up tomorrow" are nice songs to dance to.

5 out of 5 stars She's Not No J-Lo, Mary J. Blige or Janet Jackson!.......2006-02-18

These Girls cannot out do Candi Staton, She's the best, I was a child back in the 70's went Young Hearts,Run Free & Victim first came out. I have both of her old 45's Records. I just purchase The Best Of Candi Staton. I listened to samples off her greatest hits.It sounds pretty good. I can't wait to get my copy. Forget Jennifer Lopez because she cannot sings and dance, Mary J.Blige is pretty good, Janet Jackson is okay but she sounds like a winey cat sometimes.

5 out of 5 stars Back in the day..........2005-06-18

When I was under age and sneaking into the gay bars of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, I heard "Young Hearts, Run Free" and "Victim" and fell in love with these songs. I never knew who the artist was until I found Candi Staton here on amazon. I bought this Warner Archives release and only listened to those two songs...over & over! Finally I listened to the rest of the cd. WOW! What a great find. I recommend it. Nice mix of old school funk, disco, and ballads.

5 out of 5 stars Candi - The Voice of Conscience.......2004-12-08

I am a native of Newark, N.J. I remember Saturday evenings, as a child, sitting on the front porch of my house on the southside, listening to 92WKTU's Chep Pedibone, Frankie Knuckles or Live radio mixes from Club Zanzibar's very own Tony Humphries. They would play disco, house and club in such a way one can only make sure they had enough 90min blank tapes available for recording. Then, from a slight distance you can hear the intro to "Victim" being faded in. Enters Candi; the voice of passion, feeling. She carries a song with the vibe preacher giving a sermon about experiences in life and love. From Young Hearts Run Free to When You Wake Up Tomarrow Candi has been there did that. You do not want to miss this one...

5 out of 5 stars Unbelieveable greatest from the FIRST goddess of disco!.......2003-08-14

To find these songs on one collection after all these years is amazing! When You Wake up Tomorrow ... in all of it's 7 &1/2 minute glory at that ... just pure heaven! Also just nearly as good ... Victim , with it's 8 minute anthem version ... also pure heaven!

Every song on this amazing album is just terrific. From start to finish, a complete winner. Check out the booklet for a very eye-opening look inside Candi's life. Every song here has become a favorite for me ... hopefully they all will for you too!

Album Description

Goodies is the debut album from nineteen-year-old, Atlanta native, Ciara (pronounced see-air-ra). Signed to Jazze Pha's, new label Sho' Nuff/ Zomba, Goodies is the hottest debut urban album this year with production and guest appearances from Lil Jon, Missy Elliot, Ludacris and Petey Pablo. Take the best songwriters and the best singers, add the most exciting performers and the best all around personalities, throw in the hottest looks and the sexiest smiles --- mix them all together and the finished product would probably look and sound a lot like CIARA. The 18-year-old beauty from Atlanta is the latest multi-talented scene-stealer to nudge her way to center stage with attention-grabbing vocals, irresistible songwriting and killer dance moves. CIARA has found herself in the mix with some of the biggest and brightest producers, among them JAZZE PHA -- who signed CIARA to his Sho' Nuff label after working with her for a mere five days -- and his royal crunkness LIL JON, who produced the singer's lead single, the "cRunk & B" cautionary wrist-slapper "GOODIES" - featuring her legendary labelmate, the one and only PETEY PABLO. CIARA is the second artist (the first was USHER and "YEAH!") to release a cRunk & B track. In fact, CIARA co-wrote "Goodies" with "YEAH!" songwriter SEAN GARRETT! CIARA's self-titled Sho' Nuff/LaFace/Zomba Label Group debut is a heaping dose of real life issues conveyed through everyday language and extraordinary production and vocal delivery. In fact, this fresh debut is chock full of "Goodies."

3 out of 5 stars 3 1/2 stars - Fun & Enoyable........2007-07-06

When I first saw the video for Ciara's first single, "Goodies," I instantly (and unfairly) dismissed her as another indistinguished pretty face with an okay voice, just capitalizing on the new fad of "crunk music." Oh, was I wrong! Not only did she garner extreme success with that single, but her album went on to go triple platinum. After almost two years of denying how catchy "1,2 Step" and "Oh" were, I finally caved in and bought this album and I'm glad I did.

I'm not exactly sure why she was dubbed as the "princess of Crunk & B," because not one song other than "Goodies" falls into that category. (Marketing scheme, I suppose.) So as you can imagine, I was surprised with this mellow and fun album. Her voice is not anything special, but she works with what she has to a great effect. I commend her for her confidence and swagger. Not only did I love the previously released singles, (excluding the bland and sappy "And I") I enjoyed most of the album. My favorites actually weren't singles at all; "The Title" is a laid-back, summery mid-tempo and "Pick Up The Phone" is an infectious jam with creative lyrics. The production, mostly done by Jazze Pha, is good and most of the songwriting is great, also. Sure there are a few flaws and bland moments here and there, and no this is not the most deep music out there... but if you're looking for a fun and catchy album, you needn't look any further.

4 out of 5 stars A Dance Record.......2007-03-02

We all know that Ciara has a limited range and ballads are definitely not her strong points so right off the back that "And I" would be the worst track vocally. The rest of the album you could listen to when you're cleaning your house. But she's definitely growing as an artist so i do give her credit. The best tracks would be the singles that were released as well as " Thugstyle", "Hotline", and "The Title".

4 out of 5 stars Keeps you moving.......2007-01-11

The best song on the album is Oh featuring Ludacris. The beat is insane and Luda's rap is on point.
The hottest tracks are Goodies, 1, 2 Step, Thug Style, Hotline and the Goodies Remix.
And I and Other Chicks are 2 sweet slow jams - her voice is so small but it fits with these songs.
The other tracks are not as outstanding but are solid enough to round out an entertaining CD.

2 out of 5 stars Nothing great.......2007-01-02

Ciara debut album Goodies was met with a lot of hype, but she has yet to anything to really impress me to the point where I'd want to see her live, unless she was opening for an estiablished artist like Usher or Robin Thicke. The album yielded three hit singles Goodies, 1,2 Step and Oh. While all of these were great club songs they really didn't have substance.

5 out of 5 stars Very Good.......2006-12-03

Unless you love dancing at nightclubs, you probably don't fully appreciate this CD. This isn't the sort of CD that needs deep analysis by reviewers or that contains deep thoughts about intellectual topics. No, it is dance music, pure and simple. And judged on that scale, I'd say it is a home run. I can't hear this music without wanting to dance.

Besides nightclubs, ther are two other locations where these songs really resonate - cranked up (volume high, not on drugs!!!) while driving at night and in the background while working out at the gym.

I would probably rate it at a 4.5 if there were such a rating, but I'd rather move it up to a 5 than down to a 5.

A worthy addition to any collection.

5 out of 5 stars Good Rockin' Mama!.......2007-06-12

How do you cover an artist with nearly 50 years worth of recorded material
on one disc? Use this as an example. With so many different collections of artists like Ms. Etta James out there, it can be a complicated task of what to choose. Others may focus on one particular area of her recording career, but this one goes all the way back to her 1955 smash of "The Wallflower (Dance With Me Henry)" all the way up to a 2004 recording of a blues recording "The Sky Is Crying" in which her sons take part in the production. Many of the well known Argo/Cadet sides from the '60s are represented like "At Last", "Something's Got A Hold On Me", and "Tell Mama" and then moving on to her gutsy and gritty rendition of "Take It To The Limit" from 1978, which was so chilling and moving, and ending up in the '80s and '90s with some Nashville recordings containing a country tinge to them as well as a Gershwin tune "The Man I Love", and Otis Redding's "I've Been Loving You Too Long." Etta had such a versatile style from cool, refined, and seductive to passionate, gutsy and rollicking. If only some young female singers today could take a lesson from her; she could do it all, and is still doing it today. That's why this package can do wonders for somebody who wants to know which great artists from the past are still performing today and wants to see a dynamic balance and mix of different material in a career-spanning perspective. This one certainly has it. With so much material from her earlier years, some things may be missing, but as stated before, with one disc in a complete career overview theme in mind, the debate rests on what really is essential in representing the artist's entire career. All 23 tunes are very enjoyable. If you're new to Etta, this a great place to start.

5 out of 5 stars Super Fine Lady of Rock and Roll, Blues and Soul.......2007-02-21

I've been a fan Of Etta James's singing ever since hearing her sing "My Dearest Darling" and my true, true, favorite of all her songs, "At Last". I think she's a rare and very touching soul singer. Her singing always has touched my heart and soul in a very emotional way. This lady sings feelings and emotions that you know she's really lived through. And when she sings happy more upbeat songs she rocks and rolls your heart too. In fact I did'nt even know that that was her singing "Dance With Me Henry" back in the fifties. Of course I was just about nine or ten and I was just discovering all the great rock and roll music of the fifties. That's why when I hear her singing "Something's Got A Hold On Me" "Tell Mama" , "All I Could Do Is Cry" "Stop The Wedding" whew that girl's singing still blows me away. Etta has that powerful voice that even in her later years can still sway your heart just listen to her version of the Eagles "Take It To The Limit" or Otis Reading's "I've Been Loving You Too Long", her voice is a little deeper but can still grab your soul. God Bless Etta James she's a national treasure.

4 out of 5 stars What a Singer.......2006-01-18

Etta James is Queen of the blues in my book. I remember the first time I herd her sing her signature song "At Last", I just had to find out who she was, and if there were any more CDs by Etta James. I found them all here on Amazon. I bought every one of them so far. When Ms. james sings in her soft voice, my wife and I just want to cuddle up together and watch the sun go down slowly. When Etta sings in her bawdy blues voice the listner will find him or herself wishing they were in a somkey blues joint sipping on whiskey and chugging a beer. You just can't keep you feet still when Etta James sings the blues.

This collection of songs is good for the beginner, or for a person who does not want to delve very far in to Ms. James music. When you get hooked on "The Queen of the Blues" you'll need to check out the Chess collection recordings of Ms. Etta James.

Amazon.com

The most consistently enticing disc in the Rock Instrumental Classics series, this is both a great party and driving record and a window on the rhythms that powered soul music in the '60s (and early '70s, in two cases). In addition to some obvious choices (the four Booker T. & the MG's tracks, the Mar-Keys' "Last Night"), it also offers some left-field picks, such as the varied approaches to Latin music offered by Ray Barretto, Mongo Santamaria, and El Chicano. The stock of virtuoso performances here is all but endless: the bass-and-drums breakdown on Cliff Nobles and Co.'s "The Horse," the glinting guitar solo on the Bar-Kays' "Soul Finger," Hugh Masekela's questing trumpet on "Grazing in the Grass." --Rickey Wright

This cd has all my favorite instrumentals from the 60's. The sound quality is good. There are also some songs I don't remember, but all the tracks are good to listen to. I will check out other cd's in this collection and would buy others. They were not remakes but original artists.

5 out of 5 stars Music Happiness.......2007-03-22

I love this cd. The songs in it such as "The Horse" by Cliff Nobles, are a nice addition to the cds I already have. Instrumentals are a nice get away from the regular kind of music. Instrumentals bring music happiness to people like me. They go along perfectly with the vocals. God bless you Amazon for having this cd in stock and thank you. You are my absolute favorite of all department stores when it comes to shopping. Thank you.

4 out of 5 stars This one's a keeper!.......2005-10-18

I am extremely happy with this CD. I recognized only half of the 18 tracks by their titles before ordering, but the ones I did recognize were good enough to sell me on the CD.

It turned out when I first played this CD that all of the songs that I had failed to recognize by title were very familiar tunes and very good ones. This was a very pleasant surprise.

This is a great CD! I remind everyone that I intend to save the "five star" rating for CDs that just absolutely blow me out of the water, so the four star that I gave this CD means that I really, really like it and heartily recommend it. I have just started buying and reviewing classic rock CDs, so I have not as yet given a five star rating to any CDs.

Go ahead and order this one!

Tom

5 out of 5 stars Too cool for words.......2004-10-02

This is a great collection of soul instrumentals. Every single track here made the Pop Top 40. There is not a single bad track here. The CD begins and ends with Booker T. & The M.G's, and rightly so, since they were the most dominant soul instrumental group of all time. In between, you get one great instrumental after another. Highly recommended.
