Product Description
Mouse On Mars release their first live document in their decade-plus career (save a limited-edition 7inch and a handful of ''quietly tolerated'' bootleg CD-Rs). The nine tracks on Live 04 were culled from about 600 hours of live material recorded on their 2004 jaunts through the US, Japan and Europe, and plays out like a greatest hits set: reaching back to the ambient techno-dub of 'Frosch' (off their 1994 debut Vulvaland), the prime glitch of 'Diskdusk' (from their 2000 Thrill Jockey headfunk Niun Niggung) and recent hits like the crowd pleasing 'Wipe That Sound' (off last year’s commercial bid Radical Connector). Japanese pressing includes a bonus video of 'Wipe That Sound' and bonus track 'Frosch'. Victor. 2005.

This complete 12-disc survey of The Psalms of David from St. Paul's Cathedral is both a remarkable historical record of Anglican chant at its finest and an astonishing musical experience. Contained here are all 150 psalms in their traditional English garb from the 1549 Book of Common Prayer, with revised or entirely new musical settings as published in The New St. Paul's Cathedral Psalter, edited by the choir's musical director John Scott, itself a revision of the 1875 Cathedral Psalter. As such, these recordings represent the very backbone of the Anglican liturgy, but even a casual listener will be in no doubt that they also offer music that is both contemplative and richly varied when removed from its liturgical context.

The art of "pointing"--or setting--psalm texts has been essayed by many English composers, from William Croft through the Wesleys and William Boyce in earlier times to the great flowering in the late 19th century under Stainer and Barnby, with further contributions from Parry, Stanford, Elgar, Howells, and a host of choirmasters and organists, including Sir David Willcocks and John Scott himself. All are represented here. Recorded throughout in the vast acoustic of their cathedral, the St. Paul's choristers enunciate the words precisely, backed by inventive though unobtrusive organ accompaniment. Taken individually, it's possible to isolate moments when the choir seem to drag their feet or fail to give due weight to the words (Psalm 125, "They that put their trust in the Lord," seems far too subdued, for example), and the massive Psalm 119 is awkwardly split across discs 10 and 11, but overall this set is nothing less than a document of invaluable cultural and musical significance. --Mark Walker

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant Recordings.......2007-06-11

In our view the changes in pointing, and excellent selection of chants, give deeper meanings to the Psalms than those achieved in the "standard?" Parish Psalter.

We found great Spirituality and a wonderful sense of Worship whilst listening to this set. This is often sacrificed for brilliance of musical performance in other recordings.

Unfortunately the "St.Paul's Psalter" is not available (June 2007) but we are told that a new print run may happen within 12 months. This would be a most valuable companion to the recordings when and if it becomes available.

4 out of 5 stars A- for effort.......2006-02-23

This grand undertaking deserves high praise, and I'm struck, listening to chant after chant, how much Anglican chant as it used to be until the changes of the 70s was one of the great Victorian contributions to English life and art. For anyone who wants to hear almost the entire repertoire of Anglican chant deployed in singing the whole book of Psalms, this is an unrivalled source. It is wonderful, too, to hear the Coverdale translation: you realize what the churches have lost by abandoning the proper & regular singing of the Psalms. So one is immensely grateful to Hyperion for putting out this recording. It's not perfect, though.

The rhythmic pacing, though a little slow for my taste, is steady and sensitive, the diction clear, and the organ accompaniment superb (Providing an expressive accompaniment to a choir singing in 4-part free rhythm, and improvising descants to the melody at the same time, isn't easy). And of course there's the cavernous acoustic of St. Paul's, very impressive in the more thunderous psalms. Unfortunately, though, the "forward" style favored for the St. Paul's boys produces a sound that's unpleasantly chesty in the lower registers and reedy in the higher ones. The poorly integrated choral sound caused by this kind of voice-production can be downright unpleasant for anyone used to, or trained in, the classic English choral style. In fact, one has to wonder why this choir was chosen for such a huge project: even allowing for the near-universal decline in standards of vocal training for boys in England, better sounds than this can still be heard.

5 out of 5 stars What can you say?.......2003-01-03

I almost hate to criticize this terrific thing. After all, where else can you get all 150 Psalms in a single collection sung by one of the world's great choirs?

How much do I like it? I bought it *twice*. I originally bought all the CDs separately, before they came out with a single boxed set. They were stolen from my car (and, God willing, maybe they converted some poor thief to Anglican Cathedral Music and got him into church). After they were stolen, I immediately bought them again.

One of the great pleasures of life is listening to the Morning and Evening Psalms while driving to and from work, and making listening a regular feature of Morning and Evening Prayer.

So what's the criticism? The sound is a bit muddy, so the words can be rather difficult to understand without reading along (which is a real problem when driving), and personally, I prefer the Psalter from the 1979 BCP instead of the old one, from the Great Bible. But that's unreasonable. They ARE a British choir after all. Those are the only criticisms.

Anyhow, if you have a taste for choral cathedral music, this is genuinely indispensible. St. Paul's has given the world a great blessing.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent live and FREE show.......2006-10-26

I just noticed that the commenter below me is my friend that attended the show with me. Coheed blew everyone away by playing a free show that afternoon before the regular show that you had to pay to get into. Wish I had the official copy of the album, it was one of their best shows that I've seen.

5 out of 5 stars You should own this.......2006-02-06

So after their show with AFI was cancelled, my friend and I actually attended this free concert in austin during SXSW. The talkbox solo is out of control. There is nothing wrong with claudio's vocals at all. Some people just don't understand that a live performance isn't the same as a studio recording. He isn;t going to sing anything too high, but as i said this is amazing musicianship

    5 out of 5 stars excellent.......2005-09-18

This live EP is in no way sub-par. The recording quality is pretty good, the musicianship is still flawless, claudio's singing is just as good as ever, and the talk-boxes used on Everything Evil's "Prog Wankery" is worth the purchase alone. 10/10

1 out of 5 stars Not their best - rather embarassing actually.......2005-08-03

Ok, first off let me say I LOVE Coheed, they are absolutely incredible. I saw them play live 3 times last month and was thrilled when I saw this album... but then I listened to it. Claudio's usually stellar vocals are absolutely horrendous here! It also sounds like they're rushing through every song, like some thrash band gone horribly wrong. I don't know if they just had a really bad night when they recorded this or if they have improved dramatically since this recording, because the shows I went to sounded a bazillion times better. Do NOT judge their live shows by this recording, because they are capable of so much more.

I think its in everyone's best interest if we just pretend this album never happened.

5 out of 5 stars Great Little Live EP.......2005-08-03

Coheed and Cambria is an excellent band in the prog-rock genre. This EP show's Coheed's excellent live side. I am a huge Coheed fan and follower, so I know my Coheed.

It's true that Claudio messes up the vocals on a couple of songs, but that's part of the Coheed experience. He also rips on the guitar, playing stuff you've probably never heard unless you've seen them live before, with a 7-minute prog-rock out during the middle of Everything Evil (something not to miss!).

    Track Listing:
    1. Intro
    2. Devil in Jersey City
    3. Delirium Trigger
    4. The Crowing
    5. Blood Red Summer
    6. Everything Evil

So if you love Coheed, get this CD, it's definetly worth it.

    5 out of 5 stars A Work Of Beauty.......2006-02-15

I had the rare pleasure last year of finally getting to see my beloved American Music Club playing live in Glasgow , Scotland and it was absolutely superb , one of the greatest shows i've ever seen. The music was beautiful and Mark Eitzel's voice so strong and perfect.I'd longed to see this most under - appreciated band for years and i was not disappointed in the slightest. On sale after the show (from the bassists suitcase !) was this little gem of a CD which captures the band at an absolute peak . I cannot beleive they were ever better all those years ago than they are now , it's not possible. Please , if you love beautiful , sad ,heartbreaking soulful music give this band a try and let them into your life. Roll on the next AMC albums and please , someone , rerelease all those classics from way back like California (my favorite album of all time) and Everclear (2nd Fave!)...... and come back to Scotland soon lads.

    5 out of 5 stars Must have..........2005-12-27

This is an incredibly great live recording of an incredibly great band. If you don't know American Music Club, buy this right away. You won't regret it. These recordings sound better than the originals. The band is in perfect form, and Mark Eitzel's vocals are beautifully delivered with an emotional intensity that is not to be missed.

5 out of 5 stars Great band, bad city........2005-09-25

Recorded live at the Rex Theatre, an old movie theatre turned into a live music venue for a city that has precious few good live music venues. Oh wait Pittsburgh does not have a good live music venue to see live music. That's why bands skip over this old and dying steel mill city.

American Music Club says, "VENUES TO HARD HIGH HELL! WE SHALL TRAVEL TO THE LAND OF NO VENUES AND PLAY THE OLD MOVIE THEATRE!"

Despite all that goes against them (a city that could care less for the greatness that is AMC, a "venue" that should not be opened to humans and the less than stellar crowd. What you have here is a board mix of American Music Club giving 150% to an indifferent beer drinking pittsburgh yinzer crowd.

I think AMC can play any sh$%hole in America after hearing this incredible performance.

    5 out of 5 stars Reliving.......2005-09-21

I saw AMC live five days prior to this recording at the legendary Maxwell's in Hoboken, NJ. Seeing this band live is so sublime, and I am grateful to now have this CD so I can relive that night over and over. The humor, fury, power, beauty, pathos and passion of this band are all on fine display here, and this is an essential CD.

5 out of 5 stars Dripping with Guido Sweat..........2004-06-07

Guys, if you like to dance pec-to-pec with shirtless, sweaty, italian men, then this is the disc for you. And ladies, if you like to have random afterhours sex with New Jersey guidos, then this is the disc for you.

(...). Recorded the night of the infamous "Von Dutch Riots", if you listen close, you can here the local sounds that have enticed travelers to the Jersey Shore for hundreds of years -- the waves crashing on the beach...the water guns being shot in the mouth of a ceramic clown...the girls named "Bella" mooing.

No matter where you are, this disc will relieve you of life's drama, and let you relive the times driving down the GSP in the leased import luxury sedan your parents gave you for "graduating" community college. Simply put, this is the most unique, unforgettable music that you will ever vomit to.

Denny Tsettos [known overseas as the "Irish Horse Face"] plucks each beautiful song like a boisenberry and throws each one in your face, splattering the juice and seeds all over your cheeks and neck. Yeah, take it like a shot of dbol, you vixen you.

Oh, and the song "Hot Shot City" is particularly good.

5 out of 5 stars Every day can be a hot summer night at Temptations.......2004-06-03

If you are a club goer from the tri-state area, Denny Tsettos is a household name to you. For those who aren't, Denny is a reknowned DJ, remixer and producer who has been packing the dancefloors in the tri-state area for years and equally kicking out some of the dancefloors biggest remixes. This CD captures the essence of a hot summer night down at the New Jersey shore club Temptations. The cd is full of Tsettos' signture style, banging beats with spices of vocals. Don't think this is any other mix cd with beats for over a n hour and once its done all you have to show for it is a splitting headache, because this cd is not that. Denny keeps you moving from beginning to end. For all NY'ers, on those cold snowy January Saturday nights when you are stuck home because of a snowstorm and its 3 degrees out, pop on this cd and it will be a 95 degree hot August Saturday night!!!
