Album Description

Funkadelic's ultimate early classic (from 1971) remastered from the original masters for the first time in 15 years. "Maggot Brain" is rated by, amongst others, Mojo Magazine as an all-time classic. Their critics voted it the fourth greatest guitar album ever, beaten only by Jimi Hendrix and the Who. Guitarist Eddie Hazel's playing on the title track is nothing short of stunning. This 2005 reissue includes the original seven track album plus a bonus alternate mix of the album's title track. It also includes "Whole Lot Of BS", the non album B-side of the album's third single, "Hit It And Quit It", and the 45 "I Miss My Baby" recorded by US Music with Funkadelic, a copy of which recently sold among collectors for $150. The booklet includes in-depth sleeve notes by funk expert Dean Rudland, with details of the history of the band and this recording. The package includes a full color reproduction of the original artwork, contemporary memorabilia and copies of advertisements. Westbound U.S.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Guitar Work.......2007-02-02

I didn't realy know what to expect when I first heard this album in the early 70's. What realy surprized me was the Guitar solos. The best lead riff on this album can be heard on a number called Super Stupid. It's a gem. I must have replayed this song a million times just to hear that lead riff. This album contains a lot of heart and a whole lotta soul. Eddie Hazel is amazing.

5 out of 5 stars Interpsychestellar funk........2006-01-29

If Hawkwind had listened to nothing but Herbie Hancock's Blue Note records, then I have a hunch that they would've sounded like Funkadelic or like Miles Davis, ca. 1975. Either way, they would have been just as good -- only much, much different. But the differences between heavy Funkadelic and electric Miles are not that many or that great. The point is that Funkadelic cherry-picks elements from rock, funk, jazz, heavy metal, and space rock, and they do so very, very well. Unlike records that simply sample a diverse number of styles or genres, this record seemlessly combines, mixes, and matches those genres. The end result is a wonder to behold, and so this record should appeal to many people with different musical tastes. If the Jimi Hendrix Experience had covered CAN, then they would have sounded like this. Soul music meets Krautrock. While that may sound contrived, it's not so difficult to imagine how sensuous would be just such a sound.

Recorded in a single day at Paisley Park, Prince has confounded audiences yet again by recording a progressive jazz album with only four cuts--each named for a point on a compass--and clocking in at 14:00 minutes. If that wasn't enough, there isn't a single lyric on the almost hour-long disc. Like many before him, the musical savant has decided to let the music do the talking. But in Prince's case it does so, brilliantly. He has fashioned a musical lattice of fascinating conversations that are both compelling and eccentric--veering from the anxious and menacing to the soothing and deeply rhythmic--at times conjuring the specters of Sun Ra, at others, strangely Metallica. Begun as a mere jam session among the latest members of NPG, Prince has made his most collaborative record ever as he mostly plays guitar and leads his deft-handed band from the One Nite Alone tour into uncharted territory. They make seamless swings from "North's" ambient cohesiveness--led masterfully by Rhonda Smith's liquid bass--to the almost head-banging lumbering beast of "East," into the smooth elegant jazz of "West," which freefalls from a sinuous rhythmic R&B groove into a majestic and almost funereal slice of brainy pomp rock, before scaling the slippery slope of space rock on "South." It would be tempting to say that this is Prince's homage to his recently-deceased parents' stint in the Prince Rogers Trio, but it is far too forward sounding to only be a tribute. This is a brave step and it sounds remarkably like the future. --Jaan Uhelszki

4 out of 5 stars Good Prince Instramentals.......2007-05-31

This was definitely worth the money. At first I was a little skeptical but as I listened to it over and over again I found a deeper appreciation. I think that I was expecting something else at first. This was similar to One Night Alone but just instrumental.

5 out of 5 stars Better than the rest!.......2006-08-31

As a long time Prince fan, this doesn't disappoint me at all, especially after his Madhouse CDs in the 80s! Prince continues to shine on here with four instrumentals of pure jazz!

4 out of 5 stars Smooth Experimentation.......2006-05-07

The problem with critics in general, is that they tend to always try to compare and completely define what they are critiquing. Take a different approach and start by accepting and feeling what is there. Prince is roguishly experimenting on this album; having a great time and sharing some musical statements with those that would listen. Laid back, smooth, soulful, jazzy, fun and moderately engaging. Shed any concept of genre and simply enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Directions in Music.......2006-04-02

This is a 60 minute terrific cd. I listen to Prince's music for a long time but I have been impressed for this smooth, jazzy, funky joint. Especially recomended to listen to at night with a fine bottle of wine and a cigar.

3 out of 5 stars POWER FANTASTIC.......2006-03-31

N.E.W.S is an incredible showcase of instrumental jam-fest. John Blackwell, Rhonda Smith, Renato Neto and Eric Leeds join Prince in this 56 minute opus! Prince's N.E.W.S is a 4 track instrumental jazz style album with no lyrics. Perfect album when you have a hard day at work and want to relax. Eric Leeds delivers amazing saxophone depth! Rhonda Smith lays down some infectious bass grooves. John Blackwell is on point with solid drum beats. Renato Neto's beautiful piano will take you to cloud 9. Prince makes his guitar gently weep! N.E.W.S. is a power fantastic journey. Allstar musicians come together to create beautiful instrumental music. Quality album...I just wish there were more tracks. Prince's N.E.W.S will take you away!

Amazon.com essential recording

George Clinton's post-bicentennial message to those in the "chocolate cities" was that America could be theirs, too, without any loss of their own black, regional identities. One Nation Under a Groove remains Funkadelic's most provocative release, as well as one of the funkiest long-players released in the disco era. The band vamps on a world where people of different color play each other's songs ("Who Says a Funk Band Can't Play Rock?!"), lose their inhibitions (the classic title track), and bond together with the glue of shared secrets (the wonderful "Groovallegiance"). Standout: the slow-grooved "Into You," in which a lover vows to stay true or a patriot pledges devotion to a new flag--take your pick. You might think that a complex and moving ode to commitment is out of place on an album with such political overtones, but it's not. It's really the quiet-storm centerpiece. --Don Harrison --This text refers to an out-of-print edition of this title.

5 out of 5 stars Yet Another Funkadelic Best.......2006-09-15

This was too hot to handle if you were not into funk but the ever danceable "One Nation" made you get up. It was a National anthem for "us folks" and gave us some pride in knowing that we are "One Nation Under A Groove" and we had a voice. We had "Lift Every Voice " and now we got "One Nation" what more can you ask for. You have a wonderfully written dance song with the team of george Clinton, Gary Shider and the multi-talented Walter "Junie" Morrisson. "Grooveallegience" is another well done song withe the bass of Rodney "Skeet" Curtis..Another revamp of the funk mob but not noticeable only great music. The are puffing out their chests and saying "Who Says a Funk Band Can't Play Rock?"--The "Promental............enemasquad" was a hilarious treat and I am glad that they put the instumental on the album as it is a good music track--They just lacked the backing vocal tracks that was on "Promental". "Maggot Brain' the live version was very good Eddie or Mike I don't remember but excellent all of the same. This was the year for the Parliament/Funkadelic as they put a flag on the earth and then went underwater---I said it before, and I'll say it again, what a funk mob!!!

5 out of 5 stars One Nation Under a Groove.......2006-07-20

This is one of the most important albums for this group. Though many are aware of the title track,( One Nation Under a Groove" THE Funk Anthem) much of the rest of the album has been over looked. The strong blues background, mixed with bits of reggage and soul make this not only a funky dance album, but also a great album to relax to. It it not to be missed.

4 out of 5 stars good for your mind... good for the dance floor.......2006-05-23

there's plenty of stuff to groove to on this album. it's an awesome blend of funk, disco, rock, reggae, jazz, and messages about unity. if you can get past the outer space stuff, poo humor, and the "bonus EP", you're in for a real treat. get the album Maggot Brain, too. it'll blow your mind.

5 out of 5 stars So many great records.......2006-05-22

There are some many good funkadelic records I happen to own this on vinyl and is an essential in any record/cd collection. If you are thinking about buying this get it on vinyl instead. If you don't have a record player then invest sucka.

5 out of 5 stars Pledge Allegiance to the Funk!.......2005-12-20

Each and every member of Funkadelic HAD to have been high as a kite to come up with the songs on this album. Aside from that, this album showcases some really great musicians. I enjoy listening to it every time.

4 out of 5 stars Good times funk album........2007-05-16

"Good Thoughts, Bad Thoughts" is one of the best songs I've ever heard. This album is a great feel-good funk album with lots of funny improvs and great songs.

2 out of 5 stars CAUTION! Truncated versions of some tracks.......2006-03-06

Note that this reissue has shorter versions of at least two key tracks. Both "I'll Stay" and "Good Thoughts, Bad Thoughts" are each cut short by about three minutes. It's a real bummer for the serious P-funk fan... While the sound on this reissue is cleaner, the EQ seems soft and lacks the strong 'punch' of the previous issue of this title. I am unsure if this is a result of too much high end, not enough bass, or what... While the artwork is an improvement, the bonus tracks do not offer anything that was not already available on Music For My Mother.

This is an awsome album - however I cannot recomend this version... Seek out the previous issue. On Amazon this older listing does not include 'remastered' in the title (however the sound is great).

4 out of 5 stars Great CD, One Major Screwup.......2005-12-12

Funkadelic is certainly an underrated band-And not only in the R&B world, but in the rock world as well. Regardless of the name of the band and the fact that you usually find them in the R&B or Soul section of the store, Funkadelic is actually a rock band, especially the early to mid-70s albums like this. You get some pretty rocking songs, guitar solos and even a tad of progressive rock. They easily earn a spot along side of any classic rock band from the 70s. Of course it's funky as well! Don't buy a Funkadelic album thinking it's gonna sound like the theme music to Shaft, but it's definitely got a groove to it. It's great to see these cds finally getting the remaster treatment coz some of the original cds sounded pretty bad. This particular album is excellent and a great intro to the band, unless of course you want the more dancey sound, then I'd suggest One Nation Under A Groove or Uncle Jam Wants You. I must give a warning to anyone who wants to ditch their original cd copy for the new remaster. Yes, it does sound better and there are a few bonus songs, but I was very disappointed when it got to track 3(I'll Stay) and the song ended halfway through! I remember this song being at least 3 minutes longer. This really bummed me out coz the whole song is good. Imagine listening to Time from The Dark Side Of The Moon and having it fade out halfway through. There is really no reason for this, it's totally unacceptable, and that is why I give this 4 stars and not 5. It is a 5 star album all the way for sure. Those not familar with the album won't be aware of anything, but fans will be like, "What the hell?". I mean, it's not like there isn't enough space on the cd, it's a 37 minute album to begin with. With minor edits(including the last song too actually) and two bonus tracks, it's now 38 minutes!! So you may not want to toss your old cd if you want to keep the entire song. Still a great album though.

Album Description

The legendary second album (1970) from Funkadelic - remastered from original tapes for the first time in 15 years. This album's title track is the sort of spaced-out acid-funk that is a big influence with artists such as Spiritualized and Primal Scream. This 2005 CD features the original six track album plus the non-album B-side "Fish Chips And Sweat", "Free Your Mind Radio Advert", and the radically different single versions - vocal and instrumental - of "I Wanna Know If It's Good To You". The booklet includes in-depth sleeve notes by funk expert Dean Rudland, with details of the history of the band and this recording, and an interview with eyewitnesses to their 1971 UK tour. The booklet includes lots of pictures, memorabilia and adverts related to this release. Westbound U.S.

5 out of 5 stars Free your mind!.......2007-07-25

I know George and company had to been blowed out of their mind when they recorded this album back in 70. But you still can't take away the fact that it was a very good recording. Not to mention, there was a message in Funkadelic's music even if it did sound somewhat bizarre. George Clinton was quite politically aware of what was going on during that era, which was why a lot of their music along with his other group Parliament was so great. I'm proud to have this title along with all of the others in my collection.

5 out of 5 stars The kingdom of heaven is within..........2007-04-21

This album broke some barriers between rock and soul music that Jimi Hendrix had only begun to break down before his untimely death. No worries, Eddie Hazel was doing similar things on the guitar, though with another approach, and the vision of George Clinton to play through. If you think Neil Young's 'Tonight's the Night' captured a mood of drug/alcohol-addled redemption, you really should listen to this song cycle [song-psycho?]. Clinton nails acid-rock and the band bursts through it, full of raw power, humor, and divinely-inspired re-alignment of the planets. This stuff can be enjoyed in one long monster jam, or song-by-song, and the desired effect is what you'll find when you improve your interplanetary funksmanship. Dig!

5 out of 5 stars Pharmecutical Explanation........2006-10-20

When i first heard this album, i was hypnotized by the funk. Honestly, this album was recorded while the fellas was all high on acid. (That's what George Clinton said). My fav is "Some More" with Bernie rockin' the Hammond B3. It's a bluesy type of song, but oh so funky! The late Eddie Hazel in my opinion was the greatest guitarist (other than the late Jimi Hendricks. If you like rock, and I mean acid rock, cop this peice here. The title cut is also a good song to just listen to ...as a matter of fact, put ur headset on and I guarentee, you will think you're trippin on some stuff! I can't believe how far these guys have come. 5 out of 5 stars I Know That It Must Have Been Good To You Baby.......2006-09-15

"cause you're still buying Funkadelic albums! This album was out there!! "Friday Night" is a hard jam as well as "Free Your Mind". this is all rock baby! "I Wanna Know If It's Good" the "Funkadeletts" give you a taste of their sensual yet strong voices--George really knows how how to pic 'em. This album I did not appreciate when i first heard it but, as I grew up I was like wow! This stuff is tight!! The funk is in your face and these musicians really rock a house--The original Funkadelics should be inducted again into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Very excellent work for some very young musicians. The Parliaments are truly doing their thing with the vocals and this album has a lot of energy. Funkadelic set a tone and my hat's off to Bernie Worrell! He rocked those keys like Eddie and Tawl rocked those guitars! There is no other keyboard player like Bernie Worrell in rock music ---probably never will be. These are very innovative people who moved a world--they are still rockin' and funkin' all over the planet.

3 out of 5 stars I guess it's about time.......2007-04-25

Well, I guess after digging deep into the vaults, this was bound to be released at some point. "By way of the Drum" is a pretty lackluster effort from the once glorious Funkadelic. What made this album so desireable was its unavailability. I was fortunate enough to come across a low generation copy of this album a few years back. I suppose the most essentail track is the "Sunshine of your Love" with vocals. An instrumental version of this track has been available for some time on George Clinton's collection of rarities released sporatically.

The album pretty much sucks, due to overproduction and lackluster songwriting, but it is still something of interest to anyone who obsesses over the funkmob's output like I do.

5 out of 5 stars Funk used to be a bad word........2007-07-01

This is another example of how creative the music was in the 1970's. "Chocolate City" was already doing something. Funkadelic's album was a little more "coarse". With intense guitars, booming bass', pocket drum beats. Slick vocals, they were at thier best here. The album cover almost made me not buy the album. Every song here is a favorite. The opening song "Good To Your Earhole. I love Eddie Hazels guitar solo. Better By The Pound was also a great dance number with "Billy Bass" Nelson on the bass. "No Head" is a funny song about a girl trying to get backstage but the bouncer told her "No head, no backstage pass" (blush). Be My Beach is a slow song but it's a hot one. Bootsy Collins on bass & Lead vocals who sounds a lot like the late Jimi Hendricks. He's sharing vocals with George Clinton, the late Sting Ray (Bass singer) Davis & Calvin Simon, who sounds like Walter from the O'Jays. Title Cut is slammin'. "Get off your ...& Jam" was the song. Eddie Hazel sho nuff plays a hysterical guitar. "I Owe U Something GOod" WIth Garry & Calvin on vocals, they are holding it down, while the guitars sounds like some middle eastern play! Stuff & Thangs is great. Bernie Worrell is holding it down. "The Song IS Familiar" sounds real churchy. Garry Shider again, singing that song with so much soul. "ATmosphere" Bernie takes a stab at the Hammond B3& other keyboards, while George is obviously saying something "common" in the intro. This is one of the best albums that was ever released. RIP Eddie, Ray, & Tiki Fulwood!
THis album concept was actually the stuff going on backstage at the time. Who's going to go on first, equipment being sabatoged...stuff like that. I heard that some times fist fights happened. Funk says....Let's Take It To The Stage......

5 out of 5 stars This is good for your collection.......2006-09-15

You cannot have a Funkadelic collection without "The Stage" album. It totally works in the chronicological order of things and Funkadelice let's you know, "We don't care what you think, if you can do better, let's take it to the stage". They would win the battle hands down! I saw an interview with Earth, Wind and Fire and when they were descibed as a funk band they said they thought they could funk but Parlaiment/Funkadelic could funk! What does that tell you? They put out some good stuff here. "Baby I Owe You Something Good" with lead vocals by Gary Shider was superb and "Get Off Your A__ And Jam" just let you know as they always said, "Ain't nuthin' but a party baby"."Let's Take It To The Stage" is a ribbing of other groups and it was good advertisement for the Funk Mob. Read all the liner notes you can and you will see that the U.S. Funk Mob were "musical thugs" who could back up all that they spewed out. Nice "in your face music George".....

5 out of 5 stars Back & Forth.......2006-08-26

I go back & forth between this album and Standing on the Verge being my favorite Funkadelic albums. Gun to my head, I'd probably say "Let's Take It To The Stage" most days. My father brought this home for me on 8-track (I was 14), and to this day I still don't know if he had any idea... The album smokes from start to finish, from Earhole to Atmosphere. More accessible than the earlier stuff, not as commercial as the later stuff, this is the band at the peak of its powers.

5 out of 5 stars So good to your earhole..........2006-03-02

It bothers me when Parliament and Funkadelic are lumped together as the same entity. For example, VH1 claims that the 99th greatest rock act of all time is Parliament/Funkadelic. Although both groups, spearheaded by George Clinton, had rotating line-ups of musicians that usually overlapped, each band had their own sound and boasts an impressive catalogue of music that is not related to the other in any way. In my opinion, BOTH Parliament and Funkadelic should be included separately in any "Greatest" list, and both in at least the top 20! I just had to get that off of my chest. On to the review.

Let's Take it to the Stage is easily a top-3 Funkadelic album, maybe even the best. It opens with the rocking one-two punch of "Good to Your Earhole" and "Better by the Pound". I've always considered Funkadelic a rock band that is extremely funky, not vice versa, and these two tracks add credence to that way of thinking. Next is "Be My Beach" which is one of the most unique, trippy songs they have ever made. Bootsy's vocals are fantastic. Fourth is Clinton's updated take on Sly and the Family Stone's "Jane is a Groupie". "No Head, No Backstage Pass" is hilarious, sleazy, biting and to the point. It's also on the verge of heavy metal, a concept that was being invented by Black Sabbath and, to some extent, Led Zeppelin at the time. Next is the title track which is the biggest "hit" off of the album. Memorable for the funk mob's playful skewering of their contemporaries, this statement of dominance doesn't hold up as well, to me, as the wonderfully crafted tunes that surround it. One track that holds up exceedingly well, however, is "Get Off You're A$$ and Jam". Fueled by Michael Hampton's frenzied guitar solos, this live staple practically assaults you when you listen to it. Hampton (along with his predecessor and inspiration, Eddie Hazel) still ranks among rock's greatest guitarists, and his performance on this album is one of the reasons why. "Baby I Owe You Something Good" is an epic track with tremendous vocals by Gary Shider (I think...). "Stuffs and Things" is a ludicrously suggestive and goofy track that lampoons traditional R&B's less than subtle use of innuendo to talk about sex. It literally cracks me up every time I hear it ("I'm gonna do my utmost to your stuff..."). Musically, its the funkiest track on the disc with Bernie Worrell's synths doing crazy things in the background. Alas, Funkadelic can't quite keep up the incredible pace, and the last 2 songs are somewhat of a drop-off. "The Song is Familiar" is a nice-enough ballad, and "Atmosphere" is an eerily catchy little keyboard experiment.

While Let's Take it to the Stage doesn't get the recognition of Maggot Brain or One Nation Under a Groove, it is every bit as essential. Clinton and company were at a song-writing apex, giving us several 2-5 minute blasts of brilliance. The assertion that Funkadelic is the "black Beatles" is not far off base. Strip away the psychedelia, the dark humor, the monstrous bass of Bootsy and the general Funkadelic craziness, and you've got a perfectly crafted pop album. Of course, strip all of that away, and you don't have Funkadelic.

5 out of 5 stars Get Off Your WHAT And Jam?.......2004-09-12

I personally believe that Funkadelic were hitting a peak when they made 'Let's Take It To The Stage".They had certainly perfected their mix of funk and psychedelic rock and
had it down to a science. And in the pure funk-rock idion
"Good To Your Earhole","Stuffs And Things" and the unforgettable
"Get Off Your Ass And Jam" are the real deal! The zany title track and the cryptic "Better By The Pound" are P-Funk basics with the latter featuring a brilliant percussion section. And the
whole shabang ends off with the dirty, dirty "Atmosphere",nothing
but gospel organ and a filthy lyric-it so sacreligious I LOVE it!
"Be My Beach" is one of those psychedelic Bootsy ballads that just punches you out (at least it does me) and
"No Head,No Backstage Pass" is trashier then anything I've
heard Aerosmith or Sabbath or ANY groovy hard rock band do!
"This Song Is Familiar" is yet more of Funkadelic at their
irreverant best-almost acapella gospel of sorts! To me this is
one Funkadelic album that got pretty overlooked at first but that the years have treated VERY kindly! This is the kind of music that Digital Underground and Outkast have cut their teeth on and as it is it's still out and out FUNKY!Not to mention how
it steers out of the long winded jam band style that had become a Funkadelic clishe'.I'd actually recommend this to anyone as the Funkadelic album to start with-their first album is at the
same level but this is somewhat easier to get into!

5 out of 5 stars Raw and Raunchy.......2006-09-15

Funkadelic--a name a place (Funkadelica) a state of mind. This is a start of something big--What is Soul? I don't know--Soul is the ring around your bathtub! What is Soul? i dont know--Soul is a hamhock in your cornflakes! Mommy, what's a Funkadelic?--A Funkadelic is a Billy Bass, an Eddie Hazel, A Tiki Fulwood, a Tawl Ross and a Bernie Worrell on a plate with a George Clinton,a Fuzzy Haskins,a Ray Davis,a Calvin Simon and a "Shady" Grady Thomas--The Parliaments..When the system tries to put you on hold you call on Funkadelic to Free you Mind and "I'll Bet You" that you won't be the same! Very excellent debut album for Funkadelic as The Parliaments had to lay back but not down--The musicianship though I understand there are Motown musicians lurking--The album is smooth, not too heavy not too drug induced (well, maybe a little) but all in all a well put together album. Funkadelic was on it's way to being one of the most influential rock bands who played funk around. Although there have been many personnel changes, this album is raw, smooth and gritty. What is soul? Idon't know--Soul is still buying a Funkadelic CD when you have the album....

I ordered this and several other hard to find P-Funk cds. I waited more 2 months. Then, the week they were supposed to arrive, I received an email that my credit card had been declined. I found out that was simply a lie. I had just used the same care the week before this order and used it after, all on Amazon. I don't know why Amazon is offering these cds if they can't fill the order.

5 out of 5 stars Hamhocks in your cornflakes........2005-12-21

Well, when this album came out. I was in awe at it because it was most def different. I was into the Tempts at that time, so you know this was something diffrent. Like finding a magic box or something. I was 12 when it came out. The opening song "BEHOLD! I AM FUNKADELIC....it's been history since. I love this because of the soul that's mixed with acid rock. "I'll Bet You" Their vocals are off the chain. Harmony like they did in the 1950's. Tite and rite. However I recommend this cd. The closing song "What is soul" "Soul is a hamhock in your cornflakes.

    Album Description

Almost as if Clinton and company wanted to atone for parts of One Nation Under a Groove, Uncle Jam Wants You takes not merely a more daring musical approach but a more forthright political stance. The cover art alone is brilliant, front and back showing Clinton in Huey P. Newton's famous Black Panther pose. Originally released in 1979. Digitally remastered. Priority Records. 2002.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars I Got this!!.......2006-09-15

When you look at the cover with the Flashlight, The Bop Gun, The One Nation flag and George Clinton known to us as the good Dr Funkenstein and now "Uncle Jam" is saying, "I Got This". This was us all along and if you didn't know well now you know! The album in itself was not the best. the two best songs on this album are "Freak Of The Week" whick leads you into the hot "Knee Deep". george was putting the world on notice. I just have to give you one good track and the rest you can buy off my label! well, that did NOT happen! george, you shouldnuv bit fish! This album is commercial and not very funky- I give it 5 stars just because of "Knee Deep" and the excellent work of Michael Hampton on guitar and Phillipe Wynn (a former Spinner) scattin' his way through the song--Nice!! Knee Deep carried this album and did better than his sister GloryHallastoopid--
If George used his head, he would have given some space for some other music on this album instead of saving it for Uncle Jam records. When all else fails, let the musicians do their thing! this is one of the very few albums by Funkadelic where the musicians seemed to have restraints on with the exception of Mike Hampton's guitar solo. You do not get to hear the true playing of the greatest drummer Funkadelic had (Next to Tiki) Dennis Chambers. I am biased when it comes to the 5-star work of Eddie, Billy,Bernie,Tawl and Tiki but, you have to give credit to Dennis Chambers,Jerome Brailey, Tyrone Lampkin,Gary Shider and Boogie. This album had more lows than highs and thank YHWH that "Knee Deep" is on the album otherwise we would have to tell George, "Get the funk out my face"

3 out of 5 stars A Lonnnng Way From "Maggot Brain".......2006-03-18

My my my, what a difference 9 years make. In the early 70's, Funkadelic was the most socially conscious, in-your-face, explicit band this side of The Last Poets. By 1979, Funkadelic's mission was reduced to 'rescuing dance music from the blahs'. Dance, dance, dance. And yet, they still did it better than everyone else. "Knee Deep" was, and is, one of the most funkiest tunes to ever grace the airwaves. It still sounds good, over 25 years later. I had the privilege to see Funkadelic in concert, at the Apollo, when this LP first came out. Needless to say, they turn'd the mutha out. They even had a 'Freak of the Week' contest, with George, Bootsy, and Phillipe Wynne acting as judges. But, getting back to the LP, someone once said that half of this album, put together with half of Parliament's 'Gloryhallastoopid', would've been the album of the year. I whole-heartedly agree. The LP is great up to "Uncle Jam", then it kinda meanders along. "Field Manuevers" uses the main riff from an old George Clinton song from the 60's called "Can't Shake It Loose". I think that they should have had just remade the original song with the vocals. Believe it or not, I think "Holly Wants To Go To California" fits in on a Funkadelic LP, because it's a weird and crazy song, with George straining to hit the notes, and finally laughing at his own creaky voice. "Foot Soldiers", well...the music was good. But, instead of yelling "Move it!" over and over again, George could have used this track to espouse one of his cerebral spoken dialogues. With this LP, I think George was mainly concerned with getting the word out about his Uncle Jam Records label (which has been long defunct).

    5 out of 5 stars Funkadelic's Vision of "Commercial".......2006-02-11

This album, though perhaps being more "commercial" than Funkadelic albums of the past, is way funkier and groovalistic than anything that was out there at the same time. If you listened to this album without knowledge of who the band was, you would still easily tell that it was a Funkadelic record by the uniqueness of it. "Freak of the Week" is an extraordinary track starting off the album in a super funky style with great vocals by George and the whole gang. Beautiful bassline. "Knee Deep" is the obvious masterpiece of the album. Running for more than 15 minutes, it can get rather repetitive at times, but from the starting seconds with that classic synth horn riff all the way through the blazing Hampton solo and to the fading vocals it just rocks some soul through your body. The Gang would try to copy this success with future singles, most notably with "Agony of DeFeet" from Parliament's TROMBIPULATION and "Electric Spanking of War Babies" from Funkadelic's album sporting the same name, but none would quite match up to this original dance monster. Philipe Wynne shines on the next song in "Uncle Jam." Bootsy makes his sole appearance on the album with some great lines that helps to propel the second song in a row that lasts through double digits in minutes. After the halfway mark in the album, it is very evident that Funkadelic had evolved to band much more like Parliament in the late 70's than the incarnation that we all saw in the first part of the decade. "Field Maneuvers" is a short but very effective Michael Hampton instrumental work out that is very catchy and is one of my favorite songs from the album. "Holly Wants to Go..." is a "ballad" that only George could do. Very forgettable track that probably was really more made as a joke rather than a serious track. (Just listen to George trying to sing, it's horrible!) Bernie Worrell makes his only appearance on the album working from a grand piano. The last song ends this album nicely and really encompasses the musical setting that George and the boys were really trying to obtain on this album. "Foot Soldiers" is more of an instrumental and chant song but done in a very appropriate way. Funkadelic struck gold with "Knee Deep," but took a lot of flack for deviating from the in-your-face funk/rock that made the band so popular in the mid-seventies. I actually feel that the musical style is appropriate. Milking the same formula to death is a problem many bands have suffered throughout the course of their careers, but the P-Funk cog seldom stayed the same from album to album during the 70's. In the 80's the P-Funk Allstars would be met with reduced success due to the lack of parity in their music, perhaps because of the critics of this album, but they always tried to evolve as a musical group. They set their own standards, and for that reason and the fact that there are some great songs here, this is a must have. However, if you are a fan of the earlier Funkadelic it does not mean you will be totally on board with this album. Funkadelic would go back to their more rock and psychotic ways on their '81 album ELECTRIC SPANKING OF WAR BABIES, but this album is a much more benign funk journey than the raunchy days of MAGGOT BRAIN. I highly recommend this as a starting point with Parliament's MOTHERSHIP CONNECTION for those wishing to start a P-Funk collection. Just remember, what Funkadelic considers "commercial" is probably pretty foreign to a lot of other people. Great and essential album all true funkateers must have.

    Funk On!

5 out of 5 stars KNEE DEEP!!! NUFF SAID.......2004-04-01

THIS CD IS WORTH GETTING JUST FOR "KNEE DEEP" ALONE. MANY DO NOT REALIZE IT, BUT JUNIE MORRISON (FORMERLY OF THE ORIGINAL OHIO PLAYERS- "FUNKY WORM", "PLEASURE", ETC.) OVERDUBBED AND TRACKED THE BASS, PIANO, AND ELECTRIC PIANO PARTS ALONE WITH A BEAT BOX. THE DRUMS, VOCALS, AND OTHER INSTRUMENTS WERE ADDED LATER. THE SMOOTH YET FUNKY GROOVE OF THIS SONG HAS YET TO BE DUPLICATED IN MY OPINION.
NOW THIS DISC HAS BEEN REMASTERED. ALL I CAN SAY IS IT IS WORTH THE MONEY TO GET THE LAST OF THE 70'S FUNK BEFORE GEORGE STARTED ATOMIC BARKIN' (BOW WOW WOW) :)

    5 out of 5 stars Funkadelic@ their finest!!!.......2004-02-18

First, i would like to say this is one of the most funkiest bands that will ever grace this earth. This album was made when Philippe Wynne of the Spinners was with the group this is also is my favorite version of "Freak of the Week" that lasts close to 20 minutes and Philippe sings "I got ants in my pants and I need to dance I love that part and George Clinton and the P- Funk can jam !!!!
