When he was growing up, Andrea Bocelli recalls finding inspiration in a favorite recording of sacred music performed by tenor legend Franco Corelli. Bocelli--who in the meantime has come to inspire millions of fiercely loyal fans himself--returns to the genre as the guiding theme of Sacred Arias, the release of which coincides with the first English-language biography of the singer. These performances are filled with the singer's phenomenally well-known vocal signature: his flair for long, sweetly floating high notes and the gentle sense of cadence he brings to a melody. It's a mistake to compartmentalize Bocelli into a singer of "operatic" versus "popular" styles: in truth his approach is at heart the same. Lack of color and control in his phrasing remains a drawback, but the emotional empathy Bocelli evokes is never in doubt. The arias collected here sample some of the most famous devotional pieces: Schubert's "Ave Maria" and Mozart's transporting "Ave Verum," as well as an arrangement of "Silent Night" in which Bocelli tries out his English. There's also a decidedly odd choice of bedfellows for a program of "sacred" music, such as a song from Wagner's Wesendonck Lieder (whose "angel" is the object of an overpoweringly erotic attraction) and Handel's figurative ode to a tree, "Ombra mai fu." Still, Bocelli sings with an unfeigned directness that is sure to expand his already enormous following even further. --Thomas May

Beautiful music.......2007-01-12

This is my second copy of this CD, I burned the first one out!!
Andrea Bocelli has a very gorgeous voice that is a gift from above. His voice is not affected or braggadoccio but naturally magnificent. I could and do start my day listening to this spiritually uplifting CD almost everyday. It is a wonderful way to get off to a pleasant peaceful start, but also a nice way to come home in the evening if you have a CD player in your car. I highly recommend it to all.

I bought this CD's special edition with DVD, and I am impressed by bocelli's singing in this album. I have heard many voices singing sacred songs, and christmas songs, but very few singers can achieve the "sacred atmosphere" that bocelli devotes when he sings. He may not have a "strong" voice as opera singers, but I think singing these sacred songs, devoting the "sacred atmosphere" to the audience is much more important, the voice actually is just a tool that helps a singer to achieve the result. For real, I have heard some CD by some chorus that perform sacred arias, but they did not move me as much as this CD does, mostly not even close. Personally I like "O come all ye faithful", "silent night", all "ave maria"'s, "domine deus", "cujus animam" the most. When I listen Bocelli's singing I focus on what he tries to devote in singing more than his voice color, because in terms of voice color he surely cant be compared with pavarotti or domingo, so why compares? The way of listening him and listening real opera singers is different man. But the reason I gave only this CD four stars is that I have heard several sacred arias from this album performed by his voice teacher, the legendary tenor Franco Corelli. I tried not to compare both...but I cant, not because Bocelli sings bad, he is already excellent, just Corelli is TOO excellent that cant be described by human language (well I think even Pavarotti is not even close to Franco Corelli, but this is just my opinion). Anyway if you want to "experience" the true beauty of sacred arias, this CD is highly recommended. And this is also a very good sacred aria album for beginning listeners who want to broaden their musical taste to sacred arias.

These are just terrific. How does Andrea acheive the range he does, and the power he has, without sounding too heavy or too light? His voice sounds like the perfect voice for these perfect arias.

I have noticed one concern with the CD. I have heard several clicks scattered here and there in the songs -- but the CD is clean and I feel confident it is not the machine. Has anyone else noticed this?

Opera is in fashion, and the woods are full of pop vocalists who think they have the chops to sing arias. The best contender so far is Andrea Bocelli, who at least has a real voice, if a small one, and sometimes manages a really exciting tenor sound. Unfortunately, he is inconsistent in his tone and production, and, despite the fact that he's singing in his native language, he often sounds as though he has only the barest idea of what the words mean. The Moscow Radio Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Vladimir Fedoseyev, plays stodgily. Anyone with a real interest in tenor arias would be much better advised to check out recordings by the young Luciano Pavarotti. --Sarah Bryan Miller

Bocelli never disappoints!.......2006-07-07

I hate to admit it but it has only been fairly recent that I "discovered" Andrea Bocelli, when he appeared on Oprah Winfrey(or was it Dr. Phil?), and American Idol. His voice mezmorized and touched me so much that I HAD to find out more. Over the last few weeks I have purchased apx. 6 of his CD's, and I can honestly say I love them all, including this one. Bocelli does not disappoint, and it doesnt seem to matter if he is singing in french, english, spanish or italian...as the purity, honesty and richness of his voice goes above and beyond various cultures and ethnicities. From a technical level, there are other well-knows (past and present) who are equal to or above Bocelli. However, what makes Andrea stand alone is a certain something that is hard to place your finger on, or put in to words, but all who appreciate him SEE and FEEL this. Some say he sings like an angel, or if God had a voice, it would sound like Bocelli. My own hypothesis is that Bocelli sings with his heart because his eyes cannot see the words. As such, along with his beautiful vocals pours forth his very spirit. It is this very essense that makes him so unique, and has caused so many people from all around the world to love him.

I just had to write this review. I recently purchesed 3 Bocelli C.Ds and was rewarded with 1 Very good , 1 not bad, n this one that STINKS...IF THE REVIEWERS WERE HONEST I COULD HAVE SAVED SOME MONEY.... I buy a lot from Amazon, ITs a great site, and 99 percent of the time when i read reviews they are on the money and help me out a great deal....With that said

Let me say that this cd entices you with all the big name italian songs, BUT DONT LET IT FOOL YOU..It sounds like it was made in 1 day. Who ever mixed the album has Bocellis voice so loud it sounds like he is SCREAMING ( I THINK HE IS) AND the
orchestra sounds like it is made of 3 pieces as you can only faintly hear it. There is not 1 song on this C.D ID recommend.

But dont worry , if you like Bocelli and dont know what to buy
let me tell you that I Enjoyed (Cieli Di Toscana) The first song Melodramma Rivals Bocellis Con Te Partiro Which is on his ROMANZA C.D AND HIGHLY Recomended, Also Sogno is Another very good C.D. So save yourself money and stay away from this one.
Also his Verdi CD IS VERY well made, not as strong a voice as Caruso , but once you hear Bocelli you wont care. Great Great voice that is very Hypnotic and when you hear him you wont care if he is as good as Caruso because he is Different , totally different and there both great Tenors. Peace

the Perry Como of operatic tenors.......2006-03-25

I found this to be a wonderful cd. This was my first sustained exposure to Mr. Bocelli's art (I first heard his wonderful singing on the Charlotte Church cd "Time To Say Goodbye" -- also strongly recommended) and, on the whole, I enjoyed his singing very much. I also love Perry Como so the comparison above is not meant to be disparaging in any way, but merely to indicate that he's perhaps better in slower tempo pieces where the line of the melody naturally accentuates the richness of his voice. But if anyone doubts his chops, the first selection on this cd should put those doubts to rest -- his rendition of Puccini's "Nessun dorma" is both powerful and dramatic and stands up (dare I say it?) even to Pavarotti's.

Absolutely lovely!.......2006-02-25

Even though it was Andre Bocelli's Romanza CD that introduced me to his wonderful voice, I have to admit that I enjoy his opera offerings more than his popular works. I still enjoy Romanza and his other pop CD's, but it is his opera selections that seem to show the full beauty of his voice.

I am not an opera expert by any means, so I don't get hung up on whether or not someone is techically perfect or not. If I like it, that's good enough for me!

My teenage sons and I were in a pizza place the other day and above the noise, I heard a beautiful song- a male singer- and was shushing the boys, trying to determine who it was. With great patience, my 17 year old son said, "Mom, that's Andre Bocelli. Can't you tell?"

Enough said.

5 Stars Discounting Recording Problems.......2007-05-14

The content is terrific. This CD is one of a series of classical music masters. The only problem is that tracks 38 and later have a lot of distortion/static. I returned thinking it was a problem with the disc, but the replacement disc had the same problem. If not for that, I would have rated 5 stars.

Perfect for homeschooling........2007-01-29

The narratives are short enough to keep your children's attention, the music may be short in some instances but if you're playing it in the background for exposure- it doesn't matter. The price is great and the cheapest you'll find in addition to the 4 for 3 deal. We have all 18 of these cds and don't regret it!

I have found this recording series to be a very helpful introductory teaching device for my young children. It gives a brief history of the composer and samples of the musical style.

The music on this CD is all wonderful, and it's a perfect CD toget - if you have the attention span of a soap bubble! Thisis a "sampler" with narrative and very few of thepieces listed are actually played in their entirety. Even pieces which are short to begin with are excerpted. We are given a whole minute of the Hallelujah Chorus and a rousing 45 seconds from the overture from "Ezio". This is a teaching CD which gives some fine examples to support the narration - but they are very short examples. A few bars here and there is all you get.

'The HYMN-a word derived from the Greek 'hymnos'-has been defined as 'a term of unknown origin applied from ancient times to a wide variety of songs in honor of gods, heroes or notable men.'
The founder of English hymnody is Isaac Watts (1674-1748), whose work in reforming congregational song texts culminated in the publication of his 'Hymns and Spiritual Songs' in 1707. Watts' collection was as complete and comprehensive a set of hymns as had ever been proposed for English worship and it raised the profile of the hymn sufficiently to overcome the prevailing psalmody. The great flowering period of English hymnody began with the work of the Methodist hymn-writers John Wesley (1703-1791) and his brother Charles (1707-1788). The Wesleys gave great prominence to hymns within their Methodist worship and published many books.
The modern hymn book is a collection of hymns drawn from various times and places. This most accomplished recording by St. Paul's Cathedral Choir presents 16 well-loved hymns from 'The New English Hymnal'. A great number of the hymns, which originate from many different eras and traditions, are given an extra musical dimension by John Scott's original descants and thrilling brass arrangements.
Over the years, I have found myself purchasing mostly the recordings of English choirs. They seem to have incredible vocal skills, perfectly executed phrases, flawless diction and some unidentifiable ingredient that makes them very appealing to hear. Of course, I personally enjoy the all male choirs sound; boy sopranos and male altos make the difference. This is a very appealing group of hymns!!!!!

As I have said already..I am from espiscopal church..these my songs are well know by me...these songs give encouragement when it seems that all hope is lost..these are tunes that are well received....they are also very simple for the every day person to gain strength from day to day..they will become your daily prayer.....

I did not like one song in this album. Either the musical arrangement was somehow lacking or her delivery of the songs left a lot to be desired. The background vocal and her singing sometimes made me feel like I was at one of those charismatic, "tongues" believing church or a baptist church.

My knowledge of The Cranberries never stretched beyond Zombies for most of my life, however a while ago I got the sudden urge to start listening to them. To The Faithful Departed was the first release I bought. Originally I wasn't impressed at all, but my tastes have changed greatly since I bought it so I decided to give it another chance. Much to my surprise, I love everything about this CD now. Delores' vocals are so powerful and so different from everyone else's that it's almost irresistible. The band, for the most part, creates moods excellently. From the dark feeling of Hollywood to the eery feel of Electric Blue or even the almost upbeat feel of I Just Shot John Lennon, everything just clicks. Such is the case with about 90% of To The Faithful Departed.

Automatically, whenever you say you like The Cranberries you get one of two reactions.

1:) Disgust, and a reply along the lines of "I hate them."
OR
2:) A pleasing reaction, and a reply along the lines of "Yeah, they're really good."

With my experiences I get the first of the two, which leads me to believe The Cranberries are an extremely acquired taste. I can't see how people don't like them though. Most of their songs are insanely catchy and quite accessible, so with music where it is nowadays, I'd think The Cranberries would be getting only more fans.

I mentioned a few of the many different moods included on this CD but that was just the tip of the iceberg. Basically, any mood you're in, this CD has a song with that same mood. Hollywood is dark, almost with a depressing vibe, Free To Decide has a nearly uplifting feel, War Child is a terribly depressing song, I Just Shot John Lennon is dark but with an almost happy feel, and Electric Blue is one of the more dreamy tracks included. So there you have it, a CD full of different emotions.

My favorite songs are Hollywood, War Child, I Just Shot John Lennon, Electric Blue, and I'm Still Remembering. I won't say this CD is perfect, but the good parts vastly outweigh the bad. If you're new to The Cranberries I'd start with the Best Of that they have, it's a suitable starter, but by all means, this is well worth the money.

Read a significant number of these reviews and you'll get a sense of the band's following whining about the more aggressive musical tone to the songs, complaints about "over-production" by Bruce Fairbairn, and the political nature of several of these tunes. While the 3rd plaint is a valid one (O'Riordan's lyrics are often the weak link to the band) the first two are NOT. Taken as a whole, this is a better collection than EVERYONE ELSE is frankly and probably more cohesive than NO NEED TO ARGUE (though the highlights of that disc are better tunes than the best work here).

HIGHLIGHTS:
"Salvation" is an anti-drug screed that would be sunk by the vapid lyrics ("To all those people doin' lines/Don't do it/don't do it/Inject your soul with liberty..") were it not for the relentless drive of the tune and some great quirks (the brass section that comes in in the song's 2nd half). "When You're Gone" is Irish doo-wop, O'Riordan's accent combining with the "doobie da" backing vocals and a chord structure that recalls 50s rock. "Free to Decide" is another anti-war anthem, more or less asserting the individual's right to refuse to fight. The rollicking lament "I Just Shot John Lennon" is another standout, calling the December shooting of the ex-Beatle "a sad and sorry and sickening sight". "Will You Remember?" is a despairing look at marriage as O'Riordan asks if her fiancee will remember the details of the nuptials (her lipstick,dress,the black limousine,the champagne) before concluding "I won't remember the things that we swore/I will just love you in vain".

LOWS:
I agree with what others have said about "Hollywood"..it simply feels like a rehash of "Zombie" musically but not as potent. "Sarajevo" is political commentary on the level of South Park's Mr. Mackey (you know, the counselor who says "Drugs are bad..you shouldn't do drugs). Witness this couplet: "Bosnia was so unkind/Sarajevo changed my mind". It's all produced to sound big and anthemic (a children's chorus contrasted with O'Riordan asking "When do the saints go marching in?",orchestra,musicbox flourish at the end to indicate the spent innocence of the kids in the war ravaged land) but it isn't enough to salvage the mess.

BOTTOM LINE:
This disc is an easier listen overall than either of the 2 discs before it, which were either spotty at times (NO NEED) or tended to blur together (EVERYONE ELSE). This is probably the most accessible disc if you've already got the STARS compilation and you're wondering where to go next.

A Fantastic Album.............2005-11-12

Often called one of the worst Cranberries records but this is easily one of the best. The songs are great... the vocals are beautiful.... and the music intense. When I first bought this cd I played it constantly for months on end and still do on a regular basis. Since other reviewers break down the tracks in depth I'll just stop there and say don't listen to the naysayers.

I have to say that although this album diverged from the more conventional sound of the group in the first two albums I really like this one the best. Not only does this album carry some of the sane style of tunes that are signature to the group I personally admire the majority of the album that tries to expands their horizons. I feel that this particular album is full of so much raw emotion that it is priceless for any fan. You get the anger to what was happening to the band plus the sorrow towards the current events. I like this album because it was so politically charged and affected by what was going on in the era it was made. Sure most of the songs aren't that great, they are a bit weird, but I think that it is albums like these that really make a group different and true artists.

Granddaddy of the Hollywood studios, Paramount Pictures is rightfully proud of its century of contributions to both American cinema and the art of film scoring. But the first disc of this 43-track double-CD anthology merely hints at the studio's musical peaks, blithely skipping through its first seven decades in just 17 tracks. Indeed, the package as a whole seems more interested in marketing its post-'70s catalog of hits and blockbusters than it does in paying real homage to history and roots. Even rarities like Double Indemnity and The Lost Weekend are served up via modern budget-line rerecordings, as is Ennio Morricone's epochal Once upon a Time in the West). Contemporary recordings of Aaron Copland's rare score to The Heiress and Franz Waxman's great Sunset Blvd. fare better, but soundtrack fans may miss the originals. The studio's rich pop-crossover successes in the '60s are documented via Breakfast at Tiffany's "Moon River" and excerpts from Romeo and Juliet and Love Story, while successful franchises like Star Trek and Raiders also get their due. Too often the '90s-focused second disc only underscores some uncomfortable trends in contemporary scoring--orchestral nervous tics punctuated by booming crescendos, treacly piano Muzak--and makes one wonder if the music of The Rugrats Movie and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider are really film music milestones. --Jerry McCulley

Only Disc 1 Is Worth Anything.......2006-07-19

Normally I have a lot to say in my reviews, but not this time. The main problem with this collection is that all the most memorable film scores are just on one disc, with the second used mostly to play out stuff from the last ten years that, really, musically isn't very memorable and only includes three pieces anyone will recognize just because, like the movies they come from, they're based on old TV shows - The Addams Family, Star Trek, and Mission: Impossible.

And that brings up another problem. With all due respect to the late Jerry Goldsmith, who has provided some truly great classic movie scores, was it REALLY necessary to include TWO versions of the SAME Star Trek march in this collection? This seems evocative of the milk-it-for-all-its-worth attitude Paramount has had lately toward its now-tarnished crown-jewel franchise. Where's James Horner's theme music from Star Trek II and III? If they're gonna put Star Trek on here twice, they should have provided a little diversity. It wouldn't have taken much, I'm sure.

I'm sure that Paramount's had other films with far more memorable music (even Harold Faltermeyer's Top Gun Anthem could have helped on Disc 2). This just seems like a lazy attempt at something that really could have been great.

More of a propaganda CD.......2002-10-30

There are some really great songs on this 2 CD set. However, those really great songs seem to be lightly interspersed amongst a large number of forgettable songs whose main purpose seems to be to remind you of those movies you enjoy(ed) so much.

It seems a little odd to me that out of 90 years of film making the most memorable scores have been largely released within the last few years. I was pleased to find themes from the Godfather, Indiana Jones and Witness. I was perplexed with the inclusion of songs from Rugrats, both Mission Impossible movies (one would have been more than enough) and Tomb Raider (memorable???).

This is my own personal bias, but I do prefer movie soundtracks that evoke a feeling of excitement. With this collection I just couldn't get excited. I kept finding myself being let down by songs that didn't in some way complement the preceeding song.

There are certainly some great tracks here, but overall I was disappointed. My advise would be to look elsewhere.

Great selection of Film Hits!.......2002-09-25

This one was a pleasant surprise! I thought- how could any CD that had "Baby Elephant Walk" be all that good? This one is. Lots of great scores- classics and a few hidden treasures. After hearing the beautiful title score for "Children of a Lesser God", I had to buy the entire soundtrack - very soothing. There are a few that may seem too overplayed ("Love Story", "Raiders of the Lost Ark",), but most are a welcome addition to any compilation. Try NOT loving "Building the Barn" from "Witness" or the "Hymn to the Fallen" from "Saving Private Ryan". Hours of great listening.

Older recordings, main themes only.......2002-08-27

This is a great album concept, but I really wish Paramount had re-recorded these scores as they deserve to be heard. The tracks range from 1944 to the present, and the older recordings sound just like the cleaned-up older recordings that they are.

I would also personally have enjoyed more "secondary" music themes (otherwise it becomes like reading book summaries that always only quote the opening paragraph), and I could easily have done without the "pop" tunes (like Baby Elephant Walk and the Rugrats theme). In fact, it would have been very nice to listen to an album comprised of tracks chosen for their strong musical value rather than apparently for their box office and/or hit song popularity. But, to be fair, that may be precisely what draws some people to this CD set.

Film score music constitutes the single most significant body of classical music of our time. I hope some of these tracks will entice listeners to buy entire soundtracks and listen to some of these works as a whole.

One of the most beautiful Christmas albums .......2005-11-22

I love Kathleen Battle's voice, and to get such a great collection of beautiful sacred music, it was like a dream come true. She sings many traditional carols like Holy Night, Hark! The Herald Angels Sing, Silent Night, which is possibly my favorite here, you may think you have heard this song so many times, but Kathleen's voice really shines in it. Her English diction is so incredible, you can understand every word, which is not something many opera singers can achieve. Her singing is always so natural and lovely. Many other songs are oustanding on this album, I love the two version of Ave Maria and the Italian song Gesu Bambino. If you are looking for a really beautiful collection of Christmas music, this album is a great choice.

A Christmas Collection For The Ages.......2005-11-13

If there is one performer I miss hearing on a regular basis, it is Kathleen Battle. Anytime I knew that she'd be in a Metropolitan Opera radio broadcast, I knew it would be a performance to remember and more often than not, I was correct. She has a light voice that reaches the upper reregisters with ease and has as a gorgeous sound. She not a regular at many opera houses these days, and in likelihood, if she still did perform on the world's opera stages, we'd be hearing critics say her voice was not what it once was, but thanks to her recorded legacy, her voice will, always have that youthful, energetic sound.

Overall I believe that Ms. Battle performs better in complete opera recordings than recital albums, but most of her recital recordings are of at least good quality and this Christmas collection is outstanding. She handles all of the works with apparent similar ease, but since the recording is so varied, this is a compliment to her skill as a performer. She begins and ends with "O Come All Ye Faithful" where she does a few vocal acrobatics but it's never overdone. Each time I think of what the bets part of the collection is, my mind changes. She brings her skills from the operatic stage in her renditions of "O Holy Night," "Gesu Bambino" (only Pavarotti sings this better, but it's a very close second), and "The Zither Carol" which sounds so much like something that could come from the mouths of Oscar from UN BALLO or Zurbinetta from ARIADNE AUF NAXOS, two of her signature roles. The music from the African American Spirituals tradition and American background are well done and the accompaniment of the Harlem Boys Choir, used to great advantage here adds so much.

With so many Christmas collections from the world of opera available, choosing one can be difficult, but this is one collection that has proven to be a joy for almost fifteen years and will continue to give holiday pleasure for years to come.

Kathleen Battle, My Madam Christmas.......2004-12-28

I probably have 50 Christmas albums. I love many of them. This is my favorite. Leaves me astounded and breathless every time I enjoy it.

Pure Joy.......2003-12-07

In a world where disturbing things are all too common, Christian scripture guides us to dwell on that which is lovely. Kathleen Battle's blessed voice is most certainly one of those lovely things.

I bought this CD in the early 1990's, and I am here to buy it again because I have worn out the original with scratches, etc. I only listen to it during the Christmas season, but I enjoy it enough to hear it all year.

The 'Christmas Celebration' CD should be enough to convince you to also purchase Kathleen's 'A Carnegie Hall Christmas Concert'. Ms. Battle's wonderful soprano voice is joined by that of the mezzo-soprano Frederica von Stade, and the blending is more than memorable. There are a couple of songs which are on both CD's, but you'll want to hear both. In fact, the video of the PBS special is also available, and I recommend buying all three. You won't regret it.

Some of my favorite selections from 'Christmas Celebration' include 'Bring a Torch, Jeannette, Isabelle' and 'Fum, Fum, Fum', both of which are from a culture different from my own. I found such glimpses into unfamiliar favorites to enhance my own enjoyment of the Christmas season, as long as all of my traditional American favorites were included. They were. "I Wonder As I Wander" and "Oh Come, All Ye Faithful" are there among the other favorites.

This CD's music is the kind that sets a wonderful Christmas mood. It can establish memories that say "Christmas" in the memories of children for life. Along with other classics like 'A Charlie Brown Christmas' and 'The Nutcraker' (from your favorite orchesta) and George Winston's 'December' and a few others, you will slowly be able to assemble a Christmas music library that will stay with you for life.

Faithful x 3.......2006-10-31

Having been one of the "faithful" for only 5 years or so, each new venture brings back the crispness and vibrance of when I first heard the band. 'Junkie Faithful' is the best example of Ike's wit, humor and artistry to date. "22 Hours.." and "The Mixture" are classics already. Buy the album and go see the band and don't be surprised if you become one of the faithful too.

Viagra for the brain?.......2006-07-05

Having practiced medicine for 21 years I unfortunately suffer from left brain atrophy. Despondent and resigned to a one dimensional existence I happened to stumble across the Ike Reilly Assassination. Stimulating rifs, clever thought provoking lyrics, a James Dean personna and an outstanding band have generated activity in previously dormant synapses and enhanced blood flow to ischemic neurons. Ike is sort of like Viagra for the cerebral cortex. Just as a diabetic requires insulin for sustenance, I have to listen to Ike occassionally to make myself whole.

Now - just so you don't think that Ike and his assassins are some geriatric fix for this old fart, my two daughters aged 16 and 19 are fighting over who gets to borrow Junkie Faithful.

And speaking of Junkie Faithful - it's a wonderful CD - not one bad cut. Versatility rules and the band has never sounded better.

"22 hours of darkness" is a haunting song about self examination and depression and blatantly asks "do you think that this is just your life".

"The Mixture" is a masterful mixture of Ike Reilly lyrics. How can you describe this song? You can't. You just have to listen.

"God and Money" starts out with an almost psychedelic "strawberry fields" flavor and asks some critical questions. I don't know if I completely understand exactly what Ike is saying but it's all right because I'm "living a good life".

"Kara Dean" is a jaunty, clever tune which talks about "wiggling in the rain" and later tells of Ike checking out his neighbors wife while she's bending down to pull out weeds. Very catchy - one of those numbers that you end up humming for days.

"Farm Girl" is funny. Something happens at the grain elevator at the co-op then after five times we hear that the farm girl somehow has grass in her teeth.

"Suffer for the Trust" is a great song. Provocative lyrics! My wife and kids spent about half an hour discussing the meaning of the song. Listen and tell me exactly what the "face on the monument pays me a compliment" means.

"Edge of the Universe Cafe" almost sounds like an Irish folk song. Another solid song which showcases Ike's lyrical genius.

"Heroin" describes the evil of this poison in a way that Lou Reed and Neil Young never could. I love the guitar work - simple but beautiful.

"What a Day" talks of the day that "we buried my mother". Everyone said that she "looked pretty and peaceful" so Ike concludes that that means "I guess that means she's better off dead". Having just come back from my mother in law's funeral I agree with Ike - "what a day, what a day, what a day".

"I Will Let You Down" is witty and Dylanesque. Ike describes coming home late to his sleeping lady. While drunk he mumbles "Wake up pretty baby, we're gonna party hard tonight. I heard about your birthday so I brought you home a clown."

"Devil's Valentine" is short and melodic. Lovely.

"Everything is Gonna Be Alright" intros with Ike's harmonica with shades of Neil Young. It changes course with a melodic "everything is gonna be alright" then redirects.
This is a great song!! My favorite cut on the CD. This can stand up to anything I've heard in the past ten years.

In closing, I'd like to say that as good as the CD is, Ike shines even more in concert. My daughter, Hannah and I were lucky enough to see the band in North Carolina and it proved to be a nice father daughter bonding experience. After the concert I asked Hannah what she thought - she replied, "Dad, he is REALLY COOL!"

A Must Buy!.......2006-04-03

Ike Reilly has a very refreshing sound and this CD is my favorite of all of the 3 CD's I own of his. I just heard about him on February 10th and went to see his show that night. He played most of this CD and it was great. Not too often do I see a band that I've never heard of and love the music as much as I did Ike Reilly and the Assassination. I bought this CD at the show and his other 2 also. They've been part of my regular rotation since then. Ike Reilly is, fortunately for music lovers and unfortunately for the band, a well kept secret which will be getting out soon. The entire CD is, IMO, strong. There aren't really any throw-away tracks on it. Do yourself (and the band) a favor and get this CD. Then, watch for the band to come to your town. Yeah, I recommend his other two CD's too. BTW, I own probably over 800 CD's (and 700 vinyl records) and have seen hundreds of bands in concert, so it's not as if I just fell off he turnip truck when it comes to music.

Another Great One.......2006-01-07

Not too many people know about the Ike Reilly Assassination, those people are missing out. Junkie Faithful marks a departure from the loud, crazy rockers of Sparkle in the Finish and Salesmen and Racists, but the music on this disc is no less amazing. Reilly and company continue to pay their dues and create great music. If they remain a secret pleasure, you won't hear me complaining.

Everybody's favorite precocious sprite of a soprano comes out with her third album in Dream a Dream. It's only been two years since Charlotte Church's smash debut, Voice of an Angel, but that's a big chunk of the Welsh singer's life span so far. This latest is basically a Christmas album, so full of festive cheer you'd never guess it was recorded in the summer. Even the glummest of moods will disappear when you hear Charlotte's infectious take on chestnuts such as "Winter Wonderland" and "Little Drummer Boy" (and having the London Symphony Orchestra as your backup band doesn't hurt either). You know charlotte church has received so much harsh critismn about her,I find that people were jeolous of her voice, and of how a young girl can sing, she is definetly my dream ome true, (So back off johnathan flanders),this girl in the past has done some wonderful music which is inspirational and she is a wonderful person, I dont care whether she has changed, anyway her rock albumn has given me a lease on life and has given me potential in my singing,I love your voice very much, and this reviewer hasnt been written by a kid at all,if charlotte church is reading this,good on yeah girl,you definetly my dream come true,and I hope I will see you one day. your best friend JJCox

A must-have for Christmas music lovers.......2006-12-07

this cd is pure magic...almost 20 great christmas songs on one cd sung by the voice of an angel herself..there may be a few mixed reviews by some people who must be opera voice teachers because there is nothing wrong with this cd...it is flawless....charlotte's soaring vocals, the beautiful orchestra and background singers, the whole cd has the christmas feel to it..."o come all ye faithfull" has to be heard to be believed...it is breathtaking...i love charlottes take on "winter wonderland" and "ding dong merrily on high" ..made me want to go dance in the snow or something.....she hits every note beautifully..buy this cd...i bought it back in 2000 and have listened to it at every Christmastime since or Christmas doesnt feel the same.

Charlotte Church has done it again! She is extremely talented. Even if she was 25 when she put this out, she'd be amazing. But she was only 14-15 years old when she recorded this! Beautiful. This album has great choral accompaniments and fabulous orchestra arrangements. It is a little on the high side in certain songs, but it still sounds amazing. I love her voice.
