If you really want the full flavor, 100% Aretha Franklin get the original albums - you'll miss so many great songs by getting ONE "Greatest Hits" or "Vol. 1" - it isn't worth it.

Pullin' is a knock out song that I've never heard, Try Matty's and When the Battle is Over are all excellent examples, but, oh, you just want Spirit in the Dark. Too bad, you lose.

Elton John's "Border Song" is literally turned inside out, for the better, but too bad, you missed it.

Do yourself a favor and spend the extra money and treat your stero right, you deserve it - her early work at Atlantic is more than just #1 'hits' it's a body of impressive work by a talented artist. When she accompanies herself on the piano - man, make no mistake - the woman rules.

Aretha's voice, her style, delivery and interpretation of her music is incomparable. These songs are more than just classics; they're a songbook to millions of people's lives who grew up listening to her in the 60's and 70's as I did. They evolk memories of times that changed our world, and showed just how powerful and influential music could be for generations to come. There is not much that came before, and very little that came after these golden years for Aretha, that can compare to this treasury of her music. Sadly the Aretha Frankiln of 2007 pales in comparison to the Aretha Franklin of this time, who was truly and rightfully The Queen of Soul.

Definitive Collection of Lady Soul's Best Work...an Absolute Desert Island Selection.......2006-06-10

If you need validation of Aretha Franklin's legacy, look no further than this definitive collection of her best work recorded for Atlantic Records between 1967 and 1974. I have owned this two-disc set for over twenty years since its release in 1985, and I never tire of it. In fact, I return to it often and would have to conclude it to be one of my desert island selections. Teamed up with the equally legendary production team of Jerry Wexler and Arif Mardin, she sparked magic on an amazingly consistent basis during this period. Before signing with Atlantic, Franklin recorded for Columbia but was erroneously being marketed as a jazz chanteuse. After Wexler's departure from Atlantic in 1974, her work, I feel, declined artistically, and Franklin's subsequent recordings with Arista, although more commercial, were not nearly as memorable.

Disc One opens appropriately with her first breakout hit, the heart-ripping "I Never Loved a Man (The Way I Loved You)". Then the onslaught of classics - her signature cover of Otis Redding's "Respect" which completely eclipses his version; the loping doo-wop of "Do Right Woman, Do Right Man"; the roof-raising take on Carole King's "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman"; the had-it-up-to-here anthem, "Chain of Fools". Her soulful covers of the Band's "The Weight" and the Beatles' "Eleanor Rigby" reflect her personal style without compromising the memory of the original performances. Franklin takes Burt Bacharach and Hal David's "I Say a Little Prayer" quite literally and converts it into a uniquely gospel-tinged love song of longing and regret. Her soaring vocals on potentially inane confections such as "See Saw" and "The House That Jack Built" elevate their substance significantly.

Disc Two continues the hits with particular standouts being a near-inspirational version of Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell's classic, "You're All I Need to Get By"; an almost hymnal version of Simon and Garfunkel's "Bridge Over Troubled Water"; and the cruising "Spanish Harlem". My personal favorites are her dramatic cover of Lulu's 1969 hit, "Oh Me Oh My (I'm a Fool for You Baby)"; the appropriately named "Day Dreaming"; and her last big Atlantic hit, Stevie Wonder's "Until You Come Back to Me" with a playfully sauntering melody an intriguing contrast to its obsession-oriented lyrics. But honestly, there is not a single disappointment among the thirty tracks here and some, especially the religion-fueled numbers like "Wholly Holy" and "Spirit in the Dark", are simply transcendent. This set is the one to own.

When Aretha Franklin signed with Arista Records, marking the end of the 13-year tenure at Atlantic that saw her transform both her own art and the face of soul music itself, she was at loose ends. Aretha Franklin's Arista recordings are filled with as many hits as misses. Whereas her Luther Vandross-produced sets ("Get It Right" and "Jump To It") were both excellent most of her other releases were simply too trendy and overproduced. While I won't deny that Aretha experienced a deserved career revival during the mid-'80s I'll also say that there were many embarassing moments on virtually all of her post-1984 Arista albums. This IS a good collection of her post-Atlantic work but most of her Arista LPs simply don't hold a candle to her 1967-74 Atlantic works.

My attitude towards Aretha Franklin is multi-facetted. Some twenty years ago I started to be intrigued by her voice, but these were always just brief moments of thrill. The problem was that I had picked the wrong times in her career: too early and you're stuck with gospel music (which I happen too enjoy at most in church, but not on records), too late and it's bland disco. In particular, in the present compilation spanning 1980-1994, "Another Night" remains the only OK track, once you've experienced the real Aretha. For me that happened recently when I bought (after listening to many 30 second sound bites) the 4cd collection "Queen of soul" (the Atlantic recordings). These cds capture her at the peak of her power (1967-1974). This is R&B with FIRE. With me and A.F. it works like this: the harder the better. (In her slow songs there always is a kind of Gospel feeling that I dislike; as opposed to e.g. Ashford&Simpson who did gorgeous slow ballads.)

Most people know Aretha Franklin for classic hits like Respect, Think, Natural Woman, The House that Jack Built and others. Some think that she's still on Atlantic Records since she had many hits there. But they should know that she moved forward in her music career. Which brings to this Greatest Hits album for her Arista era. This has her finest efforts such as Freeway of Love, Who's Zoomin Who, Love All The Hurt Away, Jump To It and many others from the 80s/90s period. But I love Honey, the new song that Babyface did for this album. I play that more than Willing to Forgive, the song that was a hit. Pride (A Deeper Love) proves that Aretha could tear it up on a high energy dance song with the Clivilles and Cole team! Aretha's efforts with Narada Michael Walden, Peter Wolf and others here were just superb efforts that I still listen to today. That she continues to amaze and excite listeners today is quite something. She is a true Queen of Soul!

I enjoy this album this is a nice album I really do like this album itcontains some of Aretha's hit from the 80's thru 1994.
I think that it is a very nice album and it contains some nice songs. It contains Jump to it, Jimmy Lee, Get it Right, I Knew You Were Waiting For Me, Who's Zooming Who, Freeway of Love, Everchanging Times, and manymore great songs I would reccomend this album to any Aretha Franklin fan you would definitely enjoy this album...

Hits from the 1980s and beyond.......2004-07-28

Aretha's star seemed to fade during the disco era of the middle to late 1970s, but then she made a comeback. This collection covers her time on Arista from 1980 to 1994 and distils the best work from five albums. It includes the huge hits Freeway Of Love and the duet I Knew You Were Waiting For Me (with George Michael). Other impressive songs include Jump To It, Doctor's Orders (with Luther Vandross) and Get It Right. I also like Willing To Forgive, Ever Changing Times, A Deeper Love and this version of Natural Woman featuring Bonnie Raitt and Gloria Estefan. Her version of Jumpin' Jack Flash is quite a tour de force with Keith Richards doing his thing on electric guitar. Although I prefer her classic work from the 1960s and 1970s like Spanish Harlem, Respect and her exquisite rendition of Bridge Over Troubled Water, this collection demonstrates that she found lots of new spark in the 1980s and contributed a memorable body of work in that and the following decade.

The previous reviewer is being way too harsh on this double CD collection. Both CD's are ery good although the first one is a little better. The second one has a more mdoern feel.

The first one is just laoded with classics. Chain Of Fools, Spanish Harlem, Respect, and one of my two faves-Say A Little Prayer. The other fave is the bouncy gospel flavored SonOf A Preacher Man. The cover of Let It Be is super and The House That Jack Built is super spunky.

The second side is less comemrcial but explores some jazzy elements(Aint No Way), blues(Today I Sing The Blues), and R & B(Freeway Of Love, A Deeper Lover, Sisters Are Doing It For Themselves). Very engaging cover versions of Jumping Jack Flash, Border Song, and The Long And Winding Road.

Very minimal or any flawed numbers on this compilation. Aretha has such a repetoire that a two CD compilation is the way to go.

Great 1st disc (all available elsewhere), mediocre 2nd disc.......2002-04-24

I fell for the allure of a "foreign" release and half-way wasted $... for this compilation. 1st disc is full of great classics, but 2nd is all rock-funk marginal-at-best material. My suggestion is to find the classics on a $... single CD. I'm going to throw away the 2nd disc in this collection. Aretha, like Streisand, has recorded the best and worst ends of the music spectrum.

THE essential Aretha for '80's & '90's fans!.......2000-07-04

Critics may cackle, but those of us who remember the line from Steely Dan's "Hey Nineteen" ("Hey nineteen--that's 'Retha Franklin/She don't remember the Queen of Soul") know that Aretha would not have been so well remembered today if not for the '80's hits like "Freeway Of Love" and "I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me)". Yes, they are SO '80's, but they're why today the "Hey Nineteen" girl (now pushing 40) is more likely to remember Aretha than Steely Dan. If not for them, Aretha would be just the "former" Queen of Soul, not the timeless legend that made Time's top 100 people of the century when Elvis didn't.

That's what makes this THE best Aretha compilation for those of us who caught onto her in the '80's and '90's: It's the ONLY Aretha set that covers BOTH her "classic" Atlantic years (22 of the cuts from the much-loved "30 Greatest Hits" set, plus a slightly different selection of lesser songs) AND a dozen of her Arista hits from the '80's and '90's--all the way from "Respect" to "A Rose Is Still A Rose" (a VERY long time when you remember that the former's writer, Otis Redding, died years before the latter's writer/producer, Lauryn Hill, was even born). It's a shame that it took the British divisions of Warner and BMG to bridge the gap between the two halves of Aretha's career, and that their American counterparts can't do the same...

Excellent collection of her Arista hits!.......2005-10-28

Most people know Aretha Franklin for classic hits like Respect, Think, Natural Woman, The House that Jack Built and others. Some think that she's still on Atlantic Records since she had many hits there. But they should know that she moved forward in her music career. Which brings to this Greatest Hits album for her Arista era. This has her finest efforts such as Freeway of Love, Who's Zoomin Who, Love All The Hurt Away, Jump To It and many others from the 80s/90s period. But I love Honey, the new song that Babyface did for this album. I play that more than Willing to Forgive, the song that was a hit. Pride (A Deeper Love) proves that Aretha could tear it up on a high energy dance song with the Clivilles and Cole team! Aretha's efforts with Narada Michael Walden, Peter Wolf and others here were just superb efforts that I still listen to today. That she continues to amaze and excite listeners today is quite something. She is a true Queen of Soul!

I enjoy this album this is a nice album I really do like this album itcontains some of Aretha's hit from the 80's thru 1994.
I think that it is a very nice album and it contains some nice songs. It contains Jump to it, Jimmy Lee, Get it Right, I Knew You Were Waiting For Me, Who's Zooming Who, Freeway of Love, Everchanging Times, and manymore great songs I would reccomend this album to any Aretha Franklin fan you would definitely enjoy this album...

Hits from the 1980s and beyond.......2004-07-28

Aretha's star seemed to fade during the disco era of the middle to late 1970s, but then she made a comeback. This collection covers her time on Arista from 1980 to 1994 and distils the best work from five albums. It includes the huge hits Freeway Of Love and the duet I Knew You Were Waiting For Me (with George Michael). Other impressive songs include Jump To It, Doctor's Orders (with Luther Vandross) and Get It Right. I also like Willing To Forgive, Ever Changing Times, A Deeper Love and this version of Natural Woman featuring Bonnie Raitt and Gloria Estefan. Her version of Jumpin' Jack Flash is quite a tour de force with Keith Richards doing his thing on electric guitar. Although I prefer her classic work from the 1960s and 1970s like Spanish Harlem, Respect and her exquisite rendition of Bridge Over Troubled Water, this collection demonstrates that she found lots of new spark in the 1980s and contributed a memorable body of work in that and the following decade.
