The title of the Planets' debut album, Classical Graffiti, aptly encapsulates the latest project by Mike Batt, whose career has long steered a path between camp and classical, from serious orchestral concerts to pop hits, from film scores to masterminding the Wombles. Recently Batt gave the world Bond, and the Planets are even more of the same--four classically trained young women, this time partnered by four classically trained young men. The result is 16 Batt-arranged and produced tracks, both originals and covers of famous classical melodies, some acoustic, most given a polished MOR rock-dance twist. The Planets made their public debut supporting Deep Purple's 2002 UK tour and there's more than a hint of 1970s prog-rock, which, combined with an energetic feel, should go down a storm with an enthusiastic audience. Opening with an up-tempo, beat-laden "Adagio" from Rodrigo's Concerto de Aranjuez, the set includes "Contradanza", a Vivaldi-influenced Batt dance originally penned for Vanessa Mae, and a beautiful, slightly adapted version of the traditional "She Moved Through the Fair." --Gary S Dalkin

Nice Cross Over .......2004-12-30

One can hear and appreciate the classical training of these fine musicians, and this attempt to cross over into more hip crowd. I appreciate that their attempts to do this with classical pieces did not venture too far out, e.g. Rodrigo is my least favorite piece. I do enjoy the Carmen Caprice pieces and the Brandenburg Varaitions are well done.

The pieces unfamiliar to me are quite good: The Journey of A Fool, He Moved Through the Fair, A Letter from New England.

The Christmas Trilogy is nice ending, with its swirling, winding version of What Child Is This, Holly & Ivy and In Dulce Jubilo.

This is just sad. If you want to hear crossover done right, get Vanessa Mae's best of and bond's born, shine, or classified.

Great talent ruined by terrible songs.......2004-08-27

It is obvious that they have a lot of talent. The first song has a lot of energy and is quite good. But after that, the tempo of all the songs is moderato at the fastest. Most of the songs that were chosen were just to slow of songs. It does not match up to the caliber of Bond, where I thought it would have.

A Light Hearted Delight.......2004-03-25

As a music teacher I found this album delightful. They seem to blend pop and classical in an interesting way. My general music students, many modern pop or rap fans really enjoyed the selections. It is generally very difficult to sneak in good quality music and have it appreciated. High school students do not listen to very much that is musical these days. After only a few tracks they kept asking to hear more. This is quite an accomplishment. I thoroughly enjoyed their reactions. I hope The Planets will record again.

Has potential, but lacks direction.......2003-07-16

The CD opens with a fantastic adaption of Rodrigo but goes downhill from there. Too many of the tracks have a generic, slow, elevator music sound to them, something I would not have expected from a CD produced and arranged by Mike Batt. Other tracks lack direction and come off as poor imitations of Vanessa-Mae. The Planets' rendition of Contradanza, a piece composed by Mike Batt originally for Vanessa-Mae, makes my ears bleed.

If you're a fan of classical crossover (as I am), this CD is still worthwhile to own. "Rodrigo" and "Classical Graffiti" show the potential of this group if they can develop more of a style and tackle some tougher material. Buy it with the caveat that you're not going to find the same creativity or dynamism as with the early albums from Vanessa-Mae or Bond.

Nice Debut!.......2001-11-03

Earwig records is a small label that has signed some pretty decent talent over the last several years including Big Jack Johnson "The Oil Man", Homesick James "Goin' Back In The Times", Pinetop Perkins "With the Blue Ice Band" and the lesser known Jimmy Dawkins "Kant Sheck These Bluze", Lovie Lee "Good Candy" Louisianna Red "Driftin' and H-Bomb Ferguson "Wiggin Out".

Despite the lack of a handle, Liz fits well with this group offering a traditional, gospel-tinged, approach to the blues. Like her colleagues, Liz does more than belt out a few tunes. On this CD, she also proves to be a capable composer, guitarist and vocalist. Her low down and somewhat gruff voice sets the table for some rather tasty numbers and her guitar work is pretty darn good. Best tunes on the disc are the title track "Ready To Cheat" and the slow-blues slide guitar number "Reefer Woman". With this release, Liz appears on the verge of a breakout.

Blues Perfection.......2000-11-15

I've had the pleasure of listening to Liz in concert regularly for the last five years. And though no recording can compete with the "live Liz" experience, this CD comes about as close as you can get. Though afraid at first that her second album wouldn't meet the high musical standard she set for herself with her debut, I had no need to be--this is even more polished, more versatile, more musically accomplished and lyrically rich. Though she's been compared to Bonnie Rait, Janis Joplin, and Etta James, Liz actually embodies the breadth of the best of the blues. A little Howlin' Wolf asserts itself in the gritty "Quit Doggin," and a little John Lee Hooker haunts "Goin Home." And yet, all in all, it's all Liz, especially on numbers like "Other Pants" and "Great Big Man," which are her prototypical, inimitable mix of humor and raunch just set to great music.

All the songs on this CD are original and there really isn't any better blues music being made today. Nor is there better blues music being performed or produced. Liz has the most accomplished blues musicians around bolstering her voice, which is not just powerful, but dynamic and beautiful to boot.

I first heard songs from this CD live pre-release. Liz reminds me very much of Bonnie Raitt in her blues period before she found popularity as a country-pop crossover artist. Her original works reflect situations anyone might encounter on Life's road, but with a new twist in problem solving!

I'm not sure why I bought this cd. I listen to the cable digital music channels in the afternoon and when I hear something I like, I put it on my Amazon to buy list. My birthday was coming up and this cd was on that list. So I ordered it along with a few others. This IS ONE OF THE BEST CD's I've heard in a long time. Bluesy and a little raunchy. My husband has gotten so lucky since. It just touches the soul and everything else. Great job Liz! Do it again!!!

I don't remember how I found this cd. But I bought it for myself, for my birthday. It is great!!! I'm not familiar with Liz, but ANY woman out there, that likes soulful, meaningful music, you will love it.

Great CD!.......2003-09-23

I picked up this CD after seeing Liz and her band live while on a business trip to Chicago. They were very tight and entertaining, and the songs were superb! I especially like the lyrics to "Johnny and Me", a tongue-in-cheek song she wrote about her relationship with her dog (the one man that won't let her down - lol). This CD is great for working out or cruising on the freeway. I'm looking forward to picking up the others and seeing the band again the next time I am in Chicago!

A friend of mines turned me on to it and it is very rarely that you can go out and buy a CD and like every song on it. I must say that I made a good decision with no regrets about buying this one. As I write this review I am listening to "Mary" from this album. This song alone is destined to become a true classic - and believe me, there will be more to come from Kristin Hoffmann, who is the most talented singer and songwriter I have heard in years and years. She does it all: she writes both the words and the music, plays the piano (she is classically trained), arranges the music - but most importantly, she does all this with the most beautiful, expressive and soulful voice and heartful talent. She has her finger on the creative pulse of this extraordinary universe, and we are the lucky ones who benefit from the generous sharing of her gifts. Buy every album she has or will produce, and go see her sing in any venue you can - you will be happy you did.

Music To Last a Lifetime.......2004-10-05

Just because one may not have heard of this wonderfully talented musician does not mean she is not among the best songwriters, singers and performers out there. This album which was produced in 2002 is incredibly current in its themes and universal in its appeal.
The variety of music coming out of one album and the meaningful messages offered by the artist definitely make it worth your while to immediately purchase this music. It will be the best investment in a C.D. you can make, not just becasue you will enjoy it for a long, long time, but because it will introduce you to a very gifted and wonderful person who happens to love to share her talents with others. Her voice alone will astound you.
I have been listening to this album since 2002 and never seem to tire from it. Whether you are into folk, pop or any other genre of music, Kristin's music will most powerfully speak to you as well as entertain you for a long time to come.

Soulful, searching, beautiful........2004-10-05

I was at a function where Kristin Hoffmann performed a few of her songs from this album. I had chills... her voice and emotions were so perfectly manifested through her songs. She is obviously a seeker and her lyrics seem to narrate her exploration of the spiritual (spiritual--not religious). I tend to buy a lot of CDs but only a few songs make it onto my all-time lists of favourites... I have added 3 tracks from this album. When I play it at work, people always -- always -- stop by to comment. Why this woman is not getting a tremendous amount of airplay shows that talent is not the deciding factor of fame. (Visiting her website, I see that she rejected an opportunity to be signed by a major label so she could maintain control and integrity over her creations. Their loss is our gain.)
