If you do a Web search on the phrase "explosions in the sky," what you're likely to come up with are Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Vietnam, fireballs, space debris. And a band from Austin, Texas. The sophomore effort from this band of emo-style prog-rockers, Those Who Tell the Truth Shall Die, Those Who Tell the Truth Shall Live Forever was released in September 2001--and the cover art features the prescient words, "This plane will crash tomorrow." Intense, instrumental music infused with fatalistic affect, this is a requiem for a planet. Expressionist, it recalls a simmering Texas landscape placid for days, suddenly punctuated by a punishing electrical storm. Playing like a symphony in six movements, the album is composed entirely of bass, guitar, and drums. A moody but gorgeous album infused with youthful sincerity, it is cinematic in scope with soothing soundscapes of atmospheric, ambient, and shimmering chimes interspersed with crashing interludes of heavy metal-style guitar explosions and drums with intricate time signatures. File under post-rock . . . or modern composition. --Jillian Steinberger

Album Description

Opening October 15th nationwide, Friday Night Lights (a Universal picture starring Billy Bob Thornton and Tim McGraw, based on the best-selling book of the same name) features an original score by Temporary Residence top-seller Explosions In The Sky!

The film chronicles the entire 1988 season of a high school football team from Odessa, TX (adjacent to Explosions In The Sky's hometown of Midland, TX). It focuses on the ongoing financial and emotional struggles of a small town that places all of its hopes on the team's chances at winning the state championship.

The Universal soundtrack - scheduled for release October 5 - includes Explosions In The Sky's score, as well as a new Faith Hill/Tim McGraw duet and a new track by No Doubt's Gwen Stefani. Universal estimates the soundtrack will top one million copies sold by Christmas 2004. It is expected to debut in Billboard's Top 10.

"Have You Passed Through This Night," from Those Who Tell the Truth Shall Die... is featured in the film's trailer, which began airing in theaters nationwide June 11. The trailer began airing on national television during the Olympic Games.

5 out of 5 stars God be with us.......2007-04-27

'Explosions'' best album. A tale of morality, brought out by the theme of death (as is evident from the album's title), resulting in an absolutely pristine, contemplative, dichotomous masterpiece of emotion. The band's philosophy is in full force here -- before, nor after, have they got their message across with such poignance or thought. On a strictly emotional level, the album is unfaulted, but to truly grasp the truth behind it one must use their creative powers of abstract thought, for while the music is, on an aesthetic plane, gorgeous, ultimately it is the symbolic power that makes it so powerful.

Desperately romantic is a fine way to put it. Poetic. Transcending pretense. For sure, this sort of romantic vision 'Explosions' possess is not for everyone (at least, they tell themselves this); an example of such potential dissuasion? Track four begins with an overlapping of subtle 'Explosions' material and verses from what happens to be my very favorite film within, well, the medium of film itself.

"Who's doing this? Who's killing us? Robbing us of light and life; mocking us with the side of what we might have known."

The last sentence of that quote, for myself, at this point in my existence, marks the most intimate verse I've ever felt. The absolutely tragic pool the words sulk in ultimately lead to the duality behind both the redemptive spirituality and inspiring, hope-ridden Humanism that lovingly transpires. 'Those Who Tell the Truth...' conveys this via music.

Some might deem the thought this album is truly enlightening preposterous, and, over time and meditation, I've come to the realization that until one has accepted the true will of each individual, along with their inherent freedom of choice and belief, impossibility bares itself in the attempt to fully grasp the divinity this album oft-evokes and, at the very least, so admirably attempts to capture through music and spirit. For me, it's difficult to feel anything but reverence for the band and this gift they've generously given us.

Am I a delusional dreamer? Are they? Is it a pathological condition of bogus idealism in the midst of our mortal existence? Certainly possible, but then again, whether the illusion is the divine truth will never truly be known -- thus, the true power, I find, comes from our utilization of will to its limits, creating and believing such things. God -- the infinite -- exists if you believe it to be so. There is objective truth, as our rational minds teach us every day, but the ultimate, existential answer of life will never be truly known to us -- therein, subjectivity becomes the foreground to absolutely unanswerable questions.

I hold this album close, as its convictions match mine so dearly, even if my particular Life, at this point in time, fails so very often in truly acting on such ideals (I'm 23 -- those enchanting hormones!). I hope, however, in my heart of hearts, that many of you will find the same vein of communion when listening to it, even if only a little bit. Inevitably, that slight communion will grow truer and truer with future listens, or, put more simply, with time itself.

In short, 'Those Who Tell the Truth' enraptures and inspires the spirit, if you let it, though I try my hardest to understand and respect those who find little fulfillment with it... To each his own.

3 out of 5 stars Eh? I Feel I'm Missing Something..........2007-01-10

I really don't understand the massive acclaim this album receives. I would go as far to say it's...boring!!!

GAH strike me down, (and I'm sure this little review will be...) but I find this album way too monotonous to be interesting. This review may come across as scathing, but don't get me wrong, I think this is decent (hence 3 stars), but I will explain why I don't understand the mass of 5 star reviews.

I am not an expert on post-rock, but I do very much enjoy a selection of bands from it. The best, and probably most obvious choice, being the mighty Godspeed You! Black Emperor, who always manage to create epic, sprawling pieces with monumental climaxes. Bands like Mogwai, Silver Mt. Zion and Fly Pan Am also very much interest me, but this album just doesn't come close.

After giving it repeated listens, and really wanting to like it, I cannot fool myself. My biggest disappointment was the lack of climaxes in songs, not one song here takes me to that 'different level' - that disorientating adrenaline rush that the best of this genre can create. The loud rocking sections are just too generic and the band do not build them up enough, shown instantly by "Greet Death" which just thunders in with a barrage of boring guitars and drums after some ambient (what I originally thought was going to be build-up play) noise.

Too often in the quiet sections the guitar motifs are simply boring. I mean, just noodling slowly up and down a scale is atmospheric to a degree, but quite simply DULL. And then all of a sudden the listener is hit with massive noise, again highlighted in "Yasmin The Light" which farts around for a couple of minutes, then all of a sudden the band just crash out a fast-tempo section with no notable riff or motif, just lots and lots of drums.

And this is another problem for me, the drumming. This guy must be in a marching band, because he ALWAYS opts for the drum roll march build-up, which is frankly repetitive and unoriginal.

The only song that I really enjoyed here, and can easily listen to again is "Have You Passed Through This Night?", with its brooding spoken-word intro which leads to a crushing finale. This song is how the band SHOULD be doing it, creating atmosphere - building - climax, instead of noodling around and then banging the life out of everything.

Disappointing album for me, showing potential to be great, but just never quite reaching it.

5 out of 5 stars A cure for "Modern Rock".......2006-10-31

I had a good feeling about this disc after hearing a few previews here at amazon. I wasn't disappointed. The songs are dynamic, emotional, well arranged, well mixed, and to put it simply, awesome. One of the best discs I've listened to this year.

5 out of 5 stars to this cd i give my undisputed respect.......2006-10-06

I have been into explosions in the sky for a few years now and they are highly influential towards me and my fellow band members writing. This album I find as being their most experimental (apart from "the rescue" which isn't a million miles off impossible to get your hands on an actual copy of, other than it is free to download off their site). This album is my favourite alongside with "the earth is not a cold dead place", every song on this record is extremely well written and timed. The song "have you passed through this night?" is the only song they have recorded with vocals in and is extremely well placed dead on in the centre of the album. The classic formula of a progressive build up to a wall of noise finally isn't done better by any other band, songs like "a poor mans memory" back my point up undoubtedly. By listening to this album you can see how it takes them so long to write and record each track/album (sometimes taking up to six months to just write one track) they are composed perfectly and beautifully. Through my eyes what ever emotion you are feeling before you play this record is only added to by the masterpieces of the songs, sadness, bliss, ecstatic ness, despair etc. this bands ability to fuel emotions and thought patterns is quite astounding, I think that every song has a personal effect to everyone who listens to it. The album artwork is sweet and has a good use of line, textures and tone. Ever person I have recommended this band two has come back to me and expressed nothing but glee towards their listening experience. And so I say two you don't show hesitation towards purchasing this album.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect.......2006-09-14

I can't think of a single bad thing to say about this album. Granted EitS is my favorite band, and I'm biased, but this is truly awe-inspiring music. Yes, its repetitive, but therein lies its appeal. The soul of the music lies in the margins, between the notes, and in the small variations.

If you dont already own "The Earth is Not a Cold Dead Place," I would recommend starting there, as it is the band's masterpiece. If you've already heard and loved that one, this record is the next logical step.

4 out of 5 stars Very good show which I hadn't heard of..........2007-05-13

I was very into theatre in high school and college and thought I was up on most musicals, but had never heard of this show until recently. It's comprised of three short stories which were adapted into the musical format. The first two stories are tied together very well, although the last seems tacked on. But the songs are catchy and it's fairly easy to figure out what's happening simply by listening to the songs. There are two songs which are tied for my favoritism: "It's a Fish" from Adam and Eve and "You Are Not Real" from Passionella. Check it out.

5 out of 5 stars THE APPLE TREE (1966 ORIGINAL BROADWAY CAST).......2007-04-10

IT WAS EXACTLY WHAT I WAS LOOKING FOR. I WENT TO THE REVIVAL OF THE APPLE TREE ON BROADWAY IN NEW YORK CITY AND LOVED THE SCORE BUT THERE WASN'T A SOUNDTRACK AVAILABLE SO I PURCHASED THE ORIGINAL VERSION AND I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT!

5 out of 5 stars I still remember these songs after 40 years.......2006-11-05

I saw this show on the stage when it first ran, and have never forgotten it. The key to a good Broadway show is this question: Are you humming the songs when you leave the theatre? In the case of The Apple Tree, the answer is a resounding "Yes." I have been waiting 40 years for this show to be revived, and I have tickets for the revival opening in December at the Roundabout. I hope not to be disappointed, for the trio of Barbara Harris, a very young Alan Alda, and the late Larry Blyden were terrific. The three-part concept can be jarring because just when you're getting into the story, it ends -- but just enjoy the kind of songs they just don't write anymore.

3 out of 5 stars Really 2.5.......2006-07-25

SO this is another show thats actually three one acts. The first "The Diary of Adam and Eve" is the best by far. It has really cute songs and nice plot. Thats the only reason I rounded this up from 2.5 to 3 stars. The rest of the show is nothing great. "Lady and Tiger" is short and boring. And "Passionella" is exactly what it sounds like, a knock off of Cinderella. But hey, its a good show for collectors and "The Diary of Adam and Eve" is nice. Favorite Song: "Its A Fish"

1 out of 5 stars Boring material that you forget very easily.......2006-06-29

According to some reviews, this musical was supposed to be very good and I bought it. Unfortunately, I was quite dissapointed. It's composed of three different tales, the first one referring to the Adam & Eve biblical story. The lyrics here are very silly and tedious. The second tale, "The Lady or the Tiger?" contains songs that are simply awful, probably the worst ever written for a Broadway show. The third story, "Passionella", contains music that does nothing to make things better. The album contains a good informative booklet in English, German, French & Italian (as Sony uses to do)which says that Time magazine defined this show as "three moldy figs". I entirely agree. I would recommend this musical to those suffering from insomnia: it will put them to sleep right away.

Manic Street Preachers have come a long way from the raw Clash-style punky shoutings of their early singles and their later Guns N' Roses infatuation. Both The Holy Bible and Everything Must Go were albums to die for (almost literally: their old guitarist Richey James still hasn't been found since his disappearance a few years back), and this Welsh trio still have the capacity to enrage the most placid of souls. Some find their contradictions far too great to handle, others (this critic included) find them wonderfully inspirational. This Is My Truth is an elegant, epic album full of the huge choruses and direct slogans we've come to know and love. The No. 1 U.K. hit "If You Tolerate This, Your Children Will Be Next" is a deceptively subtle groover with a Motown-style beat--almost Jam's "A Town Called Malice" for the '90s. The windswept "Tsunami" uses sitars to get its message across, while "The Everlasting" is simply beautiful. OK, James Dean Bradfield may have a limited vocal range, but he sure has passion to spare. Four albums after they promised to break up, the Manics are still as impassioned as ever. --Everett True

4 out of 5 stars Scratching My Head a Bit..........2007-03-29

All these glowing reviews and not one mention, 'cept from the Editorial Staff, of their majestic masterpiece, 'The Holy Bible'? Blasphemy, I tell you! Blasphemy!!! =B=

5 out of 5 stars A Fantastic Recording from a great band, Manic Street Preachers.......2006-03-06

Every song is compelling. The tracks are chock full of good melodies, harmonic richness and intrigue, some good hooks, a bit of politics and a bit of lyrical weirdness, punk attitude, melancholy, love, anger, and overall musical lushness. This is one of the best largely unheralded bands (they come from Wales and came to prominence in the 1990's with some alternative radio airplay); they would appeal to a much wider audience if given the chance. This particular recording is their best one overall, in my opinion, and certainly their most accessible. The earlier albums are even more political, edgy, raw, punky, and gritty but still just
as oddly compelling and melodically and harmonically rich.

2 out of 5 stars Sadly good songs, however not a good album.......2005-05-25

I love the Manic Street Preachers. Always have. I even loved it when they changed direction and went off doing If you Tolerate this. I still like them when they further went on and released their next album know your enemy (Rage Against the Machine Fans maybe???). But both albums lack the direction of Holy Bible or Everything must go. Although singular tracks such as "nobody loves you", "if you tolerate this then your children will be next", "Black Dog", "Ready for Drowning" and "You stole the sun from my heart"; the album slowly plods along playing tracks that sound too similar and too unlike the manics to be memorable. Although it complete's my record colletion its not one that is played often... or at all

4 out of 5 stars Not as good as Everything Must Go, but still good.......2004-12-16

This 1998 follow-up to Everything Must Go isn't as good as it's predecessor, but it still has some great songs. My favorites are The Everlasting, If You Tolerate This (Your Children Will Be Next), Tsunami, and My Little Empire. However, this album gets really ponderous and sluggish towards the end, and songs like Black Dog on My Shoulder and Born a Girl are bordering on rubbish.

4 out of 5 stars But now unforgiven, the everlasting!.......2004-06-17

This is a much more relaxed offer by the Manics and it's really good. It starts perfectly with one of my favourites songs ever "The Everlasting" and the first half of the record is excellent. However it starts to get way too slow in the middle and in the end.

Lee Roy Parnell has been scoring country hits and tearing up Texas roadhouses for many years now, but he's never had a better album to tour behind than Tell the Truth. Partly that's because he's never written a more personal batch of songs--nearly every composition here is charged with self-discovery. "How can true love ever find us, if we're just someone we've made up," he wonders over the title track's steamy sway. On a Pentecostal house wrecker called "Brand New Feeling," he testifies joyously: "I found a brand-new me." His music's reborn, too. Parnell's blues and boogie-woogie licks have more bite here than he's ever allowed them (witness the slide guitar on "Crossin' Over"), and the country singer he used to work at being doesn't show up once. Granted, Parnell's vocals are rarely distinctive. But when he's paired at the mic with folks like Bonnie Bramlett and (on the sure-fire crowd pleaser "South by Southwest") Delbert McClinton, it hardly matters. --David Cantwell

5 out of 5 stars I really like it. .......2006-09-28

This is one of the few country artists my wife really likes also. Lee Roy does it all very well. A true talent. I think this is the best of his albums. And there are some others that are very good.

5 out of 5 stars Parnell's best, and one of the industry's finest records!.......2004-07-29

Lee Roy Parnell isn't the most intimidating singer/songwriter. I don't even know if he's had a number one hit (I've heard he hasn't, but I can't testify to it). That doesn't mean he's not good, though; hell, with this album, he proves that he can be GREAT if he sets his mind to it.

Always a pleaser, Parnell explores his rootsy side on this album. Forgoing the radio-friendly tone of such hits as "On the Road" and "A Little Bit of You," he delivers an album of rugged, country blues, that didn't garner any radio airplay, but gave him a status even better than hitmaker: true, genuine artist.

You'd be hard pressed to find a better slide player on the Nashville scene. And his "ragged down-home voice" is remeniscent of sawdust and fireflies. On the country blues of "Right Where It Hurts," he digs into you and hits you where it's most enjoyable: your heart. On the rowdy blues of "Crossin Over" and "South by Southwest" (the last featuring Texas blues icon Delbert McClinton), he gets down n dirty--blues style. With the confessional "Tell the Truth" and "Love's Been Rough on Me," he shows his softer, tender side. With the organ-choir gospel of "Brand New Feeling," he'll bring you to your feet clapping and singing "Hallelujah."

"Tell the Truth" is definitely Lee Roy Parnell's best album, and is in fact one of the great albums released so far this decade. True, no radio hits, and probably no overwhelming sales--but that just proves that too many people are missing out on a great thing. Don't be one of them: convert! Lee Roy Parnell is one of the industry's best, and he's waiting to play you his down-home music.

3 out of 5 stars Lee Roy Tears it Up.......2002-12-15

So there I was, on a layover in Chicago during (lucky for me)the Chicago blues festival. Saw Lee Roy's name on the bill and wondered what a country boy was doing in Americs's premiere blues city....After the opening chords of "right where it hurts" it was obvious! Lee Roy explained that the major labels continually discouraged him expressing himself in a way other than the top 40 country format, and this was his "coming out party". Ya had to feel his pain....All in all, this CD satisfies in the way old sweatshirts do, comforting and familiar. Buy it.

4 out of 5 stars this is punk.......2006-06-25

The 4 stars in this album don't come from the albums immense popularity, because while it hit #25 in the UK on it's release in '78 it's not THAT popular. They also don't come from the albums breakthrough sound and arrangments...because there's nothing "new" here. The guitars are loud, the vocals are screaminingly hoarse (and VERY british), and the attitude is pure and true. This is punk [period]. And the proof lies within the albums first six tracks which were recorded live and capture and rarely seem image of punk past.

5 out of 5 stars hey, it's otis Redding.......2006-01-18

This is the album I take to that deserted island. Otis Redding was incapable of making a bad record, but this one, this one is brilliant. The fact that it's better heard than adequately described by anyone, won't stop me from trying. A little on the pop side and not the Otis of 'These Arms of Mine', it's still deep pocket, extremely affecting southern soul music.
I've been listening to this for way over 30 years and damn if it isn't better now than it was then.
Every song got an ear candy hook and brothers and sisters I say unto thee, that tracks 4-5 and 6 are three of the best songs he -or anybody- ever did.....that 'Slippin' and Slidin' cuts the original, and 'Match Game' and 'Swingin' on a String' are as good as 4-5 and 6. Ain't nothing wrong with the one's not mentioned either.
I Love Destiny's Child, Cray, Lucky Peterson, Ricky Fante', Alicia, Prince....good is good, but this album is incomparable. 50 stars if they had it.

One question I might find among the more difficult in my life would be - which is my favourite Handel oratorio? I suspect that my answer would generally be 'the one I heard most recently', and that, as I write this, is Belshazzar. It is a magnificent thing, a heavenly thing. It has taken me longer than it should have to come to an appreciation of what makes Handel the phenomenon - as a genius, as an artist, as a craftsman - that he is, but I am comforted to reflect that no less a genius than Haydn, at the age of nearly 70 gaining a more thorough knowledge of Handel in performance, was driven to say that he felt a mere apprentice. In his sense of how to pace a dramatic narrative, in his instinct for how to use the human voice in song and above all in chorus, in the matchless flexibility and adroitness he displays at word-setting and in the audacity of his melodic and harmonic effects I can think of nobody who can approach Handel on his own terms.

Belshazzar was not a great success at the box-office, although this may have had more to do with difficulties in the casting than because it was deemed insufficiently biblical for oratorio, which seems to have been the fate of Hercules. It seems to me to be perfectly well described as oratorio in other ways too, with (for one thing) the extensive use of the chorus that we find in, say, Samson but not in Hercules. The one passage that cries out for visual effects is of course the apparition of the moving finger itself. Even here the composer can go a long way with sheer power of suggestion, by the strange unaccompanied violin figure creeping upwards and the frightened brevity of the vocal numbers. Otherwise for me Belshazzar is as much an oratorio as Samson is. It has the same librettist too, the crusty and formidable Jennens, who had also collaborated with Handel on Saul and on Messiah itself. Jennens' full text is not provided, but I think if you read the synopsis first and then follow the work from the headlines to each number you will have no difficulty in catching the words, so clear is the enunciation by soloists and chorus alike. As usual, Handel was driven to make alterations to the score for practical reasons. He had been a little concerned about its length, roughly 2 hours and 50 minutes in this performance, but where he wishes to be expansive he gives us full measure - two arias in Act I scene 4 take well over 7 minutes each. The liner-essay (a good one, by Anthony Hicks) goes into the issue of the version of the score used here, and I personally have no problem with it.

I have no faults to find with the performance in any way. Pinnock is an established specialist, the instruments are period instruments and vocal cadenzas at the end of the arias are kept minimal. Anthony Rolfe Johnson, James Bowman and David Wilson-Johnson are tried and trusted Handel singers and at their best here, and Nicolas Robertson and Richard Wistreich in the smaller parts are every bit as good. The part of Cyrus is a soprano part, taken by Catherine Robbin, and when I thought I heard just one touch of strain in `Destructive War' in the final scene she makes up for it instantly in her superb duet with Arleen Auger in the following number. Auger as Nitocris the mother of Belshazzar has the biggest part, and she covers herself with glory all the way through.

The recording is perfect, and when I saw an aria entitled `Destructive War, thy limits know' near the end I felt a sharp sense of irony in the year 2005. Cyrus, Handel, Jennens, you should all have been living at this hour.

3 out of 5 stars Enjoiyable, but lacking, too........2004-08-16

This 3CD set of George Frederic Handel's (1685-1759) "Belshazzar", from Archiv Production, a division of Universal Music, is proof again that transfer from vinyl to tape to disc brings with it improvements in listening that make the purchase a worthwhile addition to anyone's listening library. Written in 1744, "Belshazzar" is an oratorio in the operatic style that is wonderful oratorio, but lacking the true depth one expects to hear in an opera. London opera audiences of Handel's day agreed, as both "Belshazzar" and Handel's other offering of the period in the same style, "Hercules", were not terribly successful. Instead of the scheduled 24 performances only 16 were given and Handel never offered a full season of oratorio again. The Libretto by Charles Jennens (1700-1773) is, as the production notes say, meant "not only to show the fall of Babylon but to show it as a fulfillment of divine prediction and to confirm the biblical testimony by reference to classical history." There's only one problem, as good a quality as the CDs are, it is not possible to follow the full libretto and the accompanying booklet includes no text, which is a shame. I think the listening experience would have been increased immeasurably if one was able to follow the text of what is being sung. Nonetheless the dramatic narrative is fluid and even, and the English Concert and Choir provide nice balance to the less full vocal passages, as in Disc 3s "Oh Glorious prince", cut 10. There is enough of this throughout to keep one's interest, but disappointing if what one expects is another ""Messiah".

For the four decades he's been on the scene, the Chicago-born guitarist Phil Upchurch has made music with the best and brightest in the business: from Curtis Mayfield to Quincy Jones to George Benson. With that impressive résumé, Upchurch knows how to move and groove and rock the house, and Tell the Truth offers ample aural evidence of his skills. Blessed with a rich tone that blends the earthiness of Albert King with Kenny Burrell's finesse, Upchurch delivers a radio-friendly program that samples the best of straight-ahead and contemporary jazz, progressive rock, and urban contemporary genres. Upchurch swings Steely Dan's "Jack of Speed" and brings out the Latin flavor of "La Costa," a '70s hit by his former employer, Natalie Cole. With his South Side edge and downtown sophistication--as evidenced by his stirring solo take on W.C. Handy's "St. Louis Blues"--Phil Upchurch knows and plays a good groove when he hears it. --Eugene Holley Jr.

      5 out of 5 stars RIVETING TALENT!!!!!!!.......2006-09-25

Phil Upchurch has got to be one of the most amazing artists to ever lay his hands on a guitar. If you don't believe it, then you simply MUST listen to this cd. It will knock your socks off!

Every song on this cd reveals a unique style and/or experience. This collection flows perfectly from one song to the next! Some of the song titles are familiar standards but have fresh arrangements. Phil's legendary guitar style is multi-dimenional. David Arnay's accompaniment on the piano adds an awesome depth.

Upchurch has played with some of the brightest names in the music industry. Seldom seeking the spotlight for himself, his music has helped many other artists shine. This time it is Upchurch who takes center stage on every track. Anyone who enjoys listening to guitar or plays the guitar will be in music heaven! It doesn't get any finer than this!

5 out of 5 stars Beyond 12 bars and three chords.......2004-01-27

Phil Upchurch is a Chicago native who was heavily influenced by the fertile Chicago Blues scene. In much of his playing you can hear the Blues, but he takes it beyond the traditional 12 bars and three chords. This a very Good Jazz CD. I loved it from the moment I listened to it. Lately mmost cds have 12 or more songs but only about three to four songs are worth listening to. However, all 13 songs on this CD are great. Mr. Upchurch and the other members of the band sound great together and they all do some good improversation. While Phil is considered a Blues guitarist by many he shows why the lines between blues and Jazz can be easily blurred. After listening to this CD I could see why Mr.Upchurch was sought after as a session guitarist by Whitney Houston, George Benson, Michael jackson, Grover Washington Jr., Bobby "Blue" Bland, Aretha Franklin, Quincy Jones, Carmen McCrae, Marvin Gaye, and the list goes on. I highly recommend this CD it will appeal to Jazz, Blues, and R&B lovers. Don't delay order your copy now.

      5 out of 5 stars Beautiful!!!!!!!!!.......2001-11-24

Didn't even know this outstanding Jazz Guitar CD was out until I heard the super version of Take Five on local Jazz radio KUAZ! Immediately ran out and picked up the CD, laid back, and took it all in! This is 75:55 seconds of some cool, relaxing, yet exciting quartet action! Kudos to Mr. Upchurch and his awesome backing band, great stuff!!!! Do yourself a favor, pick it up, you'll be glad you did.......

      5 out of 5 stars Upchurch Rocks.......2001-07-26

In the Tell the truth by Upchurch I especially like Misty and La Costa... There is also the wonderfully done, Girl Talk its so hard to really pick a favorite on this masterpiece, when all of them are so good, not forgetting of course Jack of Speed and Home Again this is a wonderful CD and I think Grammy is written all over it. Its about time!

5 out of 5 stars The sweet "Truth".......2001-07-09

In his four decades in the music business, guitarist Phil Upchurch has established himself as an extremely versatile player. First making his mark as a session player for the legendary Chess label in his hometown of Chicago, he also penned the instrumental hit "You Can't Sit Down" which later became a huge hit for the Philly vocal group The Dovells. He also played on George Benson's classics "Breezin'", and "In Flight". In recent years he's released albums on Ben Sidran's Go Jazz label, but his latest album for the Evidence label is one of his best. Combining tasteful, well chosen covers with original tunes, Upchurch sounds very relaxed and home on "Tell The Truth". The best cuts on the album are "Jack Of Speed", "Take Five", "Manhattan", "Long Gone Bird" and the title track. One of the best jazz albums of 2001, and one not to be missed.
