A bit sad, but absolutely beautiful.......2007-06-09

Nancy Wilson puts such emotion into this music it's almost as if she's been there, done that. She has other recordings of the title song, "Guess Who I Saw Today" but this is the one that pulls on your heart and makes you dread hearing the sadness of that last line. Nancy Wilson is a gem and you can feel her brilliance in this album.

I heard the title song 'Guess Who I Saw Today'like fifteen years ago and remembered being totally blown away by the song-but then being a young twenty year old couldn't get myself to actually go and purchase a Nancy Wilson CD. How un-cool. But the song haunted me and recently I decided to give this CD a try...I'm SO glad I did. Nancy Wilson is a class act who has produced wonderful music. This is the CD to settle back with a nice glass of wine and let you mind flow with the music. This may have been my first Nancy Wilson CD but it certainly will not be my last.

Nancy Wilson is like a fine wine, mellowing & perfecting with time. I could listen to her forever. Choose a song, any song.

This cd is full of sophisticated musical journeys. From the opener, "Love Dance", you are on your way! Sample that hot song "Day Dream". Nancy makes it her own. "I Can't Make You Love Me" is gorgeous, fine and fulfilling. Nancy gives "More Love" depth and sincerity. "Love Won't Let Me Wait" is a real sensual knock-out! Nancy makes "Magic Door" a journey into a fantasy. The finale is a magnificent gospel song called "Your Arms Of Love".

When Nancy Wilson sings a song, you feel as though she is singing it for only you. That's how personal it gets. The beauty of her voice is incomparable. This is a must for any Nancy fan!

Nancy sings of romantic love in all its' forms...sadness, excitement, hopeful, blissful, even sensual. I recently purchased this album along with "Lush Life," and "Today, Tomorrow, Forever." Of the three it is my favorite, as the smooth, quiet songs are uninterrupted by "upbeat" songs. This is Nancy truly at her silky "pop" best, before she was distracted into other venues that I find far less satisfying.

MORE SIXTIES...WHERE ARE NANCY'S CLASSIC 70'S???.......2006-05-24

Make no mistake this is a wonderful release and does contain "Make Me A Present Of You" from the great unreleased to compact disc "Easy" which released in the late sixties features a beautifully maturing singer building up to the finest and most adventuresome recordings of her brilliant career in the seventies which all still (hopefully!) remain unreleased in the Capitol vaults...anyone left in The Capitol Tower have a clue what a unreleased treasure chest of classic and diverse performances this is...and if so what are they waiting for? Nancy Wilson started off the seventies with the classic Gamble/Huff produced "Now I'm A Woman" filled with great songs featuring magnificent and deeply soulful vocals...this release made me a serious fan for life and in concert Nancy Wilson is still stunning as recent as 2003 In Concert with Ramsey Lewis!!! Nancy continued through the seventies releasing one incredible classic after another ("I Know I Love Him" produced by The Crusaders with Joe Sample on keyboards is sublime!!) and these amazing treasures would make THE brilliant Box Set to end all Box Sets!!! Come on Capitol Records, wake up!!!!! No wonder the complaining music industry is in such a fiscal mess with oversights as blaring as this...these cry-baby complaints fall of deaf ears here...get with it!!!

A great beginning of a wonderful career.......2005-11-04

This 2-Fer package collects Nancy Wilson's first two albums, recorded in 1959 and 1960. Only 22, she sounds like she's been singing for many years beyond her age. Her voice is earthy and instantly captivating, and on slow numbers in particular she demonstrates tremendous control: she can do almost anything with her voice.

Although she can sing anything handed her, she is best on ballads that are at least somewhat blues inflected: her ability to get inside songs like PASSION FLOWER, NIGHT MIST, and GUESS WHO I SAW TODAY is incredible. The arranging by Billy May is very supportive of her stylings. This is an excellent CD, and illustrates why jazz musicians such as Cannonball Adderley were so crazy about her. Definitely worth checking out.

A Young Singer On Her Way To Stardom.......2004-10-20

Don't let Nancy Wilson's young age fool you at the time she recorded these excellent songs. She was only 22 when "Like In Love" was made and a mere 23 years-old for the "Something Wonderful" sessions, but she was already an old pro. "Something Wonderful" can also be used to describe this great 2-fer (2 albums on one CD) EMI Import from Europe. The sound remastering is superb. You can hear every nuance of Nancy's voice and each instrument in Billy May's great orchestra comes thru loud and clear. I hate to say it, but these European and Japanese Import CD's of jazz artists really put the American CD versions to shame. For some reason, the Import CD's just sound so much better.

Back to Nancy Wilson......again, don't let her age fool you. She may have been young, but her voice carries a world of experience, sounding like someone who's been thru decades of joy and heartaches in the game of love. She gives some words just enough "bite" to add emphasis to a phrase or syllable. Ms. Wilson's phrasing has always been impeccable, it's just unconceivable how someone so young could pull this off. Every song here is well chosen and demonstrates Nancy's remarkable artistry. Not too long after these recordings were released to the public, Nancy Wilson became the best-selling artist at Capitol Records, and it's easy to see why. A "Must Have" for any Nancy Wilson fan ! You won't regret it. The sound quality alone is worth it.

Tart, swinging, and sexy.......2003-12-02

It's amazing still to hear such musicality and personal style in a singer so young at the time of these recordings. Her sources (Dinah Washington, Jimmie Scott) are clear, but
it's already pure Nancy.

Dreamy and romantic is the beautifully sung "Shangri-La" and hauntingly gorgeous is Esther's vocal on "Moonglow" which is the stunning theme song from the motion picture "Picnic" staring the incredibly beautiful Kim Novak. Too bad this vocal wasn't recorded in time to be in the Original Score as it truly becomes an unforgettable classic all over again by Esther. "Out Of The Blue" is another example of excellence in both phrasing and dramatic content at its peak in a song and "People" takes on a new life all of its own while "Makin' Whoopee" sounds superb here! Old chestnuts such as "The Girl From Ipanema" and "I Wish You Love" are given fresh and haunting interpretations which hold up to the original versions beautifully and Edith Piaf's "If You Love Me, Really Love Me" is dramatic, full of pathos and quite a stunner!!!! Esther turns "Too Soon To Know" inside out and matches Dinah's version in classic fashion in "Make Believe Dreams" and one can understand why veteran arranger-composer Ray Ellis kept calling for coffee-breaks just so he could play back the finished tracks for KICKS!!! This incredible singer really had it all and we are the lucky ones as this is just the finale of the 1st great LP on this incredible two-fer!!!! Next is the 1966 classic "Esther" which kicks off in high style with the Cole Porter classic "It's All Right With Me" that has never sounded quite as cooking as it does here!!! Oliver Nelson does the arrangement on this classic version and shares arranging honors with Ray Ellis on this overlooked masterpiece! "The Shadow Of Your Smile" has never sounded quite as haunting as it does here and "Crazy He Calls Me" is definitely the definitive version of this Carl Sigman classic who also composed "What Now My Love". Soulful is Esther on "He Touched Me" and classic and stirring in the standard "A Taste Of Honey". Jazzy and funky with "Let There Be Love" and haunting in the gorgeous "You Can't Go Home Again" which is definitely classic Esther at her finest!!! "Just Say Goodbye" is another example of what a great jazz singer Esther was and how sad it is that she was so overlooked and "I Could Have Told You So" shows Esther again matching the great Dinah and doing it in her own brilliant way. Cole Porter's "Every Time We Say Goodbye" is given a real workout here that is stunning and a definitive reading of Mick Jagger's "As Tears Go By" show how versatile this great DIVA was and what a crime it was that she was so underappreciated!!! Hot and jazzy is the finale and "The Party's Over" is a real cooker!!! Thanks to Collectables that this masterpiece is available for all who care about great singing to enjoy for all time!! This is really an example of what Great Singing is all about-and it is All About Esther who is truly a once in a lifetime brilliant talent! BRAVO ESTHER AND THANK YOU...
