Customer Reviews:
MICHAEL TILSON THOMAS GLORIFIES GERSHWIN.......2007-05-13
ANYONE WHO LOVES GERSHWIN WILL CHERISH THIS GRAND MEMENTO OF HIS MUSIC. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT.
A treat for the ears.......2004-01-11
Given all the recordings available of Gershwin in general, and the Rhapsody in Blue in particular, and given that there are three versions of the Rhapsody, and given that even those who love the Rhapsody most likely came to it through the full symphony version, there is a real treat in store here for those who've never heard the jazz band version, or who have heard it, loved it, but have never been able to find it anywhere.
The jazz band version was the first, and is unrelenting fun from beginning to end. There is an almost infectious joy written into the music, which is completely missing from the symphonic version. Listen to this disc and rediscover an old favorite.
Fall in love with Gershwin.......2003-08-05
This CD by Michael Tilson Thomas was one of the first I picked up to start my collection of Gershwin's music. His splendid way of bringing out Gershwin's flair is invigorating. I listen to this wonderful CD more often than any other CD I own; the music is impossible to get bored with. Thomas's unique Second Rhapsody particularily grabbed my attention and I find myself humming it often. This CD is an excellent starter to your very own Gershwin collection and a unique, valuable addition to those familiar to Gershwin's tunes.
Great Jazz Rhadsody in Blue But..........2002-10-05
I recall this recording when it was issued as an LP several years ago. The jazz band recording of Rhapsody in Blue is quite a novelty since we usually heard the version for full orchestra. Both orchestrations by Ferde Grofe are wonderful but the jazz band version with its smaller forces is refreshing to hear. The short pieces recorded here like Short Story, Sleepless Night and the Promenade (Walking the Dog) are quite great compositions and are seldom recorded.
However, I have serious reservations about Mr. Tilson Thomas' performance of the Second Rhapsody. This piece is called a "recreation" from George Gershwin's manuscript. One wonders what this means. The Second Rhapsody was originally a sequence in the film Delicious (under the name Manhattan Rhapsody where it was part of a New York setting) which Gershwin developed into a concert work. Gershwin said there was no program for the Rhapsody. The theme Gershwin started with was one he refereed to as a "rivet theme." I think the title given to the Rhapsody (Rhapsody in Rivets) would not have originated with Gershwin.
The Second Rhapsody has not been a popular piece but has been played and recorded before (notably by Oscar Levant with Morton Gould and his Orchestra). Gershwin recorded the work with an orchestra he hired (available on Music masters) before making some corrections to the score for publication. It is an unfortunate fact that Mr. Tilson Thomas performs the Second Rhapsody with his own embellishments. He was asked by Ira Gershwin to stop this practice but, as far as I am aware, Mr. Tilson Thomas never did, so the recording here should list the Second Rhapsody by Gershwin-Tilson Thomas.
Sorry but I cannot recommend a disc where too many liberites have been taken.
Fantastic "Rhapsody in Blue" and more.......2002-09-07
Tilson Thomas on piano and the LA Phil behind him, it is the other end of the piano roll restoration version. You know MTT is inside the music and he draws you into it too. This album is a rock in my Gershwin collection.

Customer Reviews:
What a beautiful CD.......2006-11-10
This is a lovely CD, that tells a story of a overnight candlelight vigil. From beginning to end, full of hope and quiet, despair, joy, relief, lots of emotions and all told without a single word - all piano and instrumental. You can hear strains of some old gospel favorites, like Amazing Grace, in a special and new arrangement. I am a massage therapist and my clients love getting an hour long massage listening to this. Very highly recommended.
A Wise Decision ..........2005-09-10
I originally purchased "The Vigil" as a gift for my brother; however, curiosity got the better of me, so I just had to hear the CD for myself. Well, as it turned out, I liked it so much that I ended up buying one for myself.
David Nevue's music has both a soothing and spiritual effect on the listener. If I had to name a "favorite track", I'd say #7 - Chasing Shadows"; however, without hesitation, I can also say the entire album is a winner.
"Once upon a time", I studied the piano, and after hearing "The Vigil", it inspired me to want to start playing again. It's been a long time since I've felt this way. Music should be an "inspiration", and I give the artist full marks for the wonderful album he has put together here.
So make "a wise decision"! Get yourself a copy of "The Vigil" today!
Spiritual, Grounding and Uplifting.......2004-07-24
David Nevue's piano works on this CD are intensely spiritual and helped me to connect more deeply with my soul and life purpose. Thank you, David, for this incredible gift you are sharing with the listeners.
Haunting Indeed.......2003-04-29
As I was preparing to write this review, I read the words from the CD's liner notes, "hauntingly romantic." Indeed, this is a wonderful description of this CD. I was preparing to write that this CD is "hauntingly beautiful." The Vigil is an outstanding work. David Nevue's heart and soul are revealed in each and every song. You will love this CD for a "hauntingly romantic" and "hauntingly beautiful" evening. In my book it is a "must have." But, so are all of David's other CD's. Find out what you've been missing and discover what his fans already know. David's music is simply wonderful. It will take your breath away and renew your spirit.
My favorite David Nevue album........2003-04-26
From the first notes of track #1 be prepared to be drawn in for an emotional rollercoaster unlike any other! I've been a long time fan of David's since I found him ...and probably will be until he stops making music altogether. I cannot recommend the current 3 albums enough that Amazon has listed and his 3 other albums previous to The Vigil (The Tower, While The Trees Sleep, The Last Waking Moment) and 1 more after Postcards From Germany (O Come Emmanuel; A Christmas Celebration)! Get them any way you can and prepare to wear out your CD player 'til the CDs can play no more!
David, thank you for making your wonderful music available to amazon. Continue to bless the world (both Christian and non-Christian alike) for many, MANY more years! God Bless! :)

Customer Reviews:
An excellent record.......2007-01-10
I had this record when it was released in the 80's but lost it. Probably someone who liked it as much and stole it from me... It's excellent musicians and he has a great voice. There is just one song that's not up to the rest of the songs and that is the title song. It's not often you find records were more or less all songs are great.
I'm very fond of artists like David Foster, Jay Graydon, Eagles, Don Hneley, Chicago, Toto, Bill Champlin and so on. If you like this type of music you will enjoy Alan Gorrie a lot. It's a bit 80's with the sound but it's actually one of the best records from that time. I just wonder what happended to him and if he released any more records?
I can really recomend this record. It's even better then what I remembered!

Album Description
American pianist Richard Dowling performs virtually all of Gershwin's original works for solo piano along with several new transcriptions of Gershwin improvisations from disc recordings and player piano rolls. Dowling transcribed several of the tracks himself including a world premiere of Gershwin's own three-minute rendition of the main theme of "Rhapsody in Blue." Rounding out the disc are Earl Wild's Seven Virtuoso Etudes on Themes by Gershwin.
Customer Reviews:
This guy is AMAZING!.......2002-12-08
I heard one of Dowling's concerts and he's awesome! I play this CD in my car and almost got a speeding ticket because of it. Richard really knows the Gershwin style. It's upbeat and a lot of fun to listen to over and over.
He's Got Rhythm!.......2001-08-31
Richard's got the most amazing fingers (and ears)! He's such a good pianist that you'll swear you're hearing old George playing himself. If you love music from 1920s and 30s New York, this is about as authentic as it gets. The Earl Wild pieces at the end will blow you away. You'll want to listen to this CD over and over because the music is happy and the execution is perfect.
Richard Dowling has found teh Gershwin Way to play.......2001-08-17
The masterful work displayed on this CD is a pleasure to listen to. The speed with which the keystrokes are perfectly executed is simply astounding. I have only had the CD for about a week and have enjoyed it completely many times.

Nobody can accuse Fazil Say of having a bad time while recording this disc of Gershwin classics. He brings a jazzy improvisation and plenty of spunk to these well-worn tunes, creating one of the most enthralling Gershwin piano discs around. Some pianists make Gershwin sound grandiose (Helen Grimaud, for instance), but Say makes this music fun. His alternating takes on "Summertime"--one slow and pensive, the other dizzying and swinging--are unforgettable, while his "It Ain't Necessarily So" is spiky and mischievous. A small rhythm and horn section keeps up with the pianist on a few of the shorter works, while Kurt Masur and the New York Philharmonic get in on the action for Rhapsody in Blue and the lesser-heard "'I Got Rhythm' Variations." Featuring some of Gershwin's most technical, modernist writing, "Variations" is a real discovery, as are Say's inventive interpretations of the shorter solo miniatures. Throughout, he's clearly in his element, having a blast and showing off. Gershwin seldom sounds this good. --Jason Verlinde
Customer Reviews:
This is one of my absolute favorite Gershwin CD's.......2001-12-26
There's some rather rare pieces on this CD--including the wonderful cakewalk Novelette in Fourths. Gershwin wrote some wonderful jazz-style preludes for piano, but usually only three are recorded. There are a number of other short piano works that are delightful and practically impossible to find on CD. Fortunately, they are here, along with some favorites from Porgy and Bess and other piano arrangements of Gershwin songs such as the virtuoso "I Got Rhythm" variations.
What's really great is that Fazil Say plays these with humor and lightness. No heavy, pseudo-scholarly seriousness here. He makes the most of his pianistic skill and yet retains the spirit of Gershwin's playfulness and fun. This is definitely a must-have if you love Gershwin.
An Exceptional CD of Gershwin's Music.......2001-11-11
Fazil Say demonstrates his familiarity with Gershwin's music in this excellent Teldec CD. Unlike other classically trained pianists who have opted to play Gerswhin as though it was traditional classical music, Say instead performs these scores as the lively, danceable jazz tunes that they are. He does a fine job emphasizing the connections between Gershwin's music and earlier forms of jazz such as ragtime. Indeed Say demonstrates not only his familiarity with Gershwin's scores, but shows he's having much fun playing them. So do the classical musicians who accompany him on several arrangements. Kurt Masur and the New York Philharmonic accompany Say on "Rhapsody in Blue" and the variations on "I Got Rhythm" with excellent performances of their own. Without question, this is one of the finest CDs I've heard of Gershwin's music performed by classically trained musicians.
Great and subtle pianist.......2000-12-28
Although everything on this disc is also heavily recorded by others, Fazil Say has indeed found new arrangements to the songs and pieces, which made George Gershwin famous. Maybe The Rapsody in Blue is the one that has been recorded most, by any standard. But nevertheless the comparison between versions is always interesting, mostly due to the work itself. Fazil Say has a more jazzy approach than let's say, Michael Tilson Thomas or even Alicia Zizzo (the latter is better than that of Tilson Thomas). With Fazil Say you hear that Gershwins music is firmly rooted in ragtime and music hall, the piano being the one they use in a bar, in most other interpretations there is the tendency to use a grand piano, typically concertlike. Although Gershwin craved to be a concertcomposer (he even went to Paris to ask Ravel to teach him), his strength laid in jazzy, vaudeville-like sharpness, and above all, syncopated music. It was music to dance to. His songs mostly transcend the lightness of musical (music hall) songs, which he wrote together with his brother Ira. In addition, especially Porgy and Bess, which is an opera true to the word, is simultaneously impressing and touching, though halfheartedly unemancipating in its use of so called Negro language. However, Fazil Say has nothing to do with that, and his interpretations are wonderful, in the songs his piano really sings, you do not miss the voice of the singer. In addition, I will not forget to mention the New York Philharmonic under Kurt Masur, who gives an outstanding performance, surprising and full of the necessary rhythm and drive.
The sound quality is excellent, especially brass and percussion. The quintet that accompanies Say in the first four numbers is up to its job and more. The sound of the piano is very well captured.
FANTASTIC INTERPRETATION.......2000-06-27
This is a MUST HAVE CD for all Gershwin fans. You feel the sadness, joy, happiness, all in this CD. Fazil Say is once again showing his virtuousity as well as his understanding of Gershwin through all the pieces he played, both on solo, quintet and orchestral performances. One feels fully satisfied with the pleasure of Gershwin's fantastic interpretation. Very highly recommended..
I heard this CD highlighted on the radio today.......2000-06-22
My local public radio station was playing cuts from this CD all morning as a way to get people interested in pledging money. I already made my donation, so I thought I would give Amazon.com some attention for a change. I was very impressed with what I heard. The arrangements are a mixture of Fazil being backed by a small quintet and the New York Philharmonic. He can play piano! Enjoy!

Customer Reviews:
Solo piano recordings of Gershwin are few.......2006-01-08
Solo piano recordings of Gershwin are few, and I am in search of one that will transport me back to my childhood, when my grandmother played Rhapsody In Blue for the family. The recording quality is excellent. Sara Davis Buechner is amazing. Her fingers fly flawlessly over the keys. My criticism is that the music often sounds rushed. Overall, this is an enjoyable CD if you love Gerswhin, but I prefer Alicia Zizzo's interpretation and playing of Rhapsody In Blue.
