tight and funky !.......2006-01-30

This is just one of those albums that has one of those VIBES going straight through it... there's just seems to be that magical energy and level of funkativity that you just can't plan out and rehearse... its one of those Jupiter alligned with Mars type strokes of fate... I mean, sure, tight band, great tunes, genius (ex impressions) singer/songwriter, producer, that fat Curtom sound etc... but the truth is, there just happen to be records and sessions where everything is right and HOT... and others where everything is right but... ... ... The case of this album is, you can just tell that it was just one of those sitautions where the boxer walks into the ring, the crowd is pumped, and WHAM, its all over before it started. Virtually all the tracks are examples of this... but in my book, the album's instrumental BUTTERFAT is the real K.O. Sadly, the tune (as well as this album) never became a "funk essential"... My guess is that because the album never panders. Its hot and tight... the musicians obvoiusly have chops, but its just too good. BUTTERFAT reminds me a lot of a Tower of Power/Player's Association type thing... the funk is going, band is working out. I'm a reserved person at times, but whenever I hear it, I have to make sure the doors are shut and curtains are pulled cause this fat boy is going to be dancing. -- Likewise, not only does Hutson shine on the really funky tunes, but he's good at being mellow and funky too... and his tunes always have hooks that pull you in... If you don't believe me check out YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT YOU CAN DO... like almost all the tunes on this album, you can break down virtually any element (the catchy moog bass line, the snappy high hat, sharp horn arrangements) and they're just all there... And the arranging and production are hot and tight too.

This album along with ROY AYER'S MYSTIC VOYAGE is one of my favorite funky albums that fall into the category of high musicianship/high production values/tight band yet ALL TOO OBSCURE. WHY ??????????????????????????????????

ONE OF THE BEST ALBUMS I'VE EVER HEARD.......2005-05-23

A couple of years ago, a friend of mine lent me this on cd...and I couldn't believe how good it was.
My jaw HIT THE FLOOR.
I knew of Leroy being with The Impression's along with the Great Curtis Mayfield, but I had never even heard of this album.
Every song is great! There is not ONE weak track on this entire album.....and it's undeniable.

This album, as a whole, is better than any of Curtis' lp's (except for "Superfly")
Leroy and his band really knew what they were doing when they put this thing together!

All the songs are powerful, musically and lyrically...even the instrumental "Butterfat" is great....

I can't say anymore about this.........just go and BUY IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Some Vintage 70's Soul...With a Little Bit More........2002-12-16

I knew nothing about Leroy Hutson when I saw this CD in my local record store. I was tempted by the albums cover, and the year in which it was from(1976). The chance purchase has been a great musical investment for my soul collection. The album is not a soft soul experiance. Rather it has numerous upbeat and edgy tracks, including some instumental ones that leave the listener craving more. The songs are upbeat and motivational and the disks third track "You never know what you can do (give it a try)" are a testament to the albums songs. The upbeat music continues over most of the cd's tracks but Its the music, lovers holiday, and feel the spirit are the albums tightest tracks. This album is a must have for any soul and funk collection.

why this guy is not more famous is a complete mystery to me. took curtis mayfield's place in the impressions. college roommates and co-writer w/donnie hathaway. unbelievable. his style veered heavily into the cheese as the seventies wore on but love oh love is an absolute masterpiece. having the man in addition is just icing on the cake. if you can't get your swerve on to this, you should give it up and go home...

Great Tasting of Funky "Curtom" Style Orchestral Soul !.......2001-02-07

The cover of the the CD reads "Leroy Hutson/The Man!" and below it states his credentials, "Writer/Producer/Artist/Superstar ! ! !" It shows him in the studio surrounded by a couple of funky keyboards, plenty of mics and whatnot, a pair of headphones, a lead sheet blurred by the camera... the image is pretty clear.

Take a listen, and its apparent, Hutson, former Curtis Mayfield/Impression/Donny Hathaway conspirator has put in a lot of work on this album... funky, orchestral soul... the sweet Curtom sound with that funky tight edge describes it well. The flamboyance of the "Philly" even "Hot Buttered Soul" sound are there... but the grooves have a much harder edge... the drums, basslines, and fuzzy guitar grooves are mixed well above the strings (a faux pas that *IMHO* often softened the Philly sound, even though I happen to be a native Philly-ite)... as you listen, you can tell he's a brilliant and imaginative producer and vocalist and has a brilliant arranger by his side but there just seem to be something missing that seems to put him over the top. I can't quite put my finger on it (! ! ! ) - - am I the only one ?

Nevertheless, these are great grooves... as I listen to them the music of Willie Hutch (soundtrack to the Mack and Foxy Brown) comes to mind... in fact, if you're curious about the style of this album and the sound clips are still not up, I'd definitely check out some Willie Hutch... if you like him, you'll like Leroy (and visa versa.)

Overall, I'd say if you need a second dose of the Curtom funky '70s sweet soul sound... this CD is definitely worth the purchase ! If you like this CD, check out some of the New Birth as well, and keep an eye out for the currently out of print Impressions sound track to "Three The Hard Way" ! ! !

And another and!.....and it appears to have joined it's original album counterpart as now being a "collectible" item. So quickly! Many old-school music listeners may remember listenening to the 1973 release "So In Love (with you)", from the Newark, NJ born native's debut solo album release "Love Oh Love (another nice ballad), when played on local soul airwaves at the time? The multi-talented singer/song-writer (co-penning "The Ghetto" with then roomate Donny Hathaway, while both were students at Howard University)/arranger/producer, was coming off his stint of a several years as the replacement of legend Curtiss Mayfield, as a member of The Impressions. He began his solo career with this stellar effort! The album contains smooth mellow and love song tracks, showcasing his great feel of music. "As Long As There's Love Around" is another romantic song. His albums became hunted bounty for American and foreign record collectors, and for old-school soul music collectors who know of, this release has now reached "bounty" status. This cd reissue even surprised the writer as to how quickly (2003 release) it went from retail release, to "collectibility" status...Whoa...! Unfortunate, but true, reissued albums onto cd, have a limited retail life span of their own. We can only trust the reissued will be reissued. Another good album to have in the collection.

I first Heard Leroy Hutson's Music years ago&I was feeling His Groove&Vibe.His Soulful Vocals along with His Talent as a Multi-Instrumentalist adds so much juice to this Set.when you hear Him you are Hearing the Fore-Runner to Maxwell but with a more SOulful Presentation overall.I Like Maxwell's stuff but this is His thing times 2.Leroy Huston has been overlooked for so long it's not even funny.when you hear this set&His other Albums you'll wonder why He isn't given his Fair due as a Artist??

A true representation of R&B,soulful!.......2000-07-08

This CD goes even deeper into the BEST hits of Leroy Hutson.....his works on this compilation of songs just puts one into a "happy" state of mind. It shows what R&B is really all about...I can listen to this over and over! His voice is soothing, the songs engaging...and it just makes me feel good to listen to music from a time that can't be repeated...Mr.Hutson is one of the masters of this generation of R&B,the true soul, when music was music,and artists really had to give it their all to make it in the industry. True to the bone, mellow soul!
