By this time in her career, Whitney Houston had a formula sound, and here she leans on it hard, surrounding herself with adult contemporary heavy-hitters like Diane Warren and Babyface. This wasn't the monster her previous records were, most notably The Bodyguard soundtrack, even though it seems to be an overt attempt at satisfying the same audience. Her voice is as crystalline as ever, but overall it seems a somewhat soulless effort, even though the themes are much more secular than she's braved before. --Scott Wilson

4 out of 5 stars I love Whitney.......2007-04-24

I believe that it is very hard to top a huge commerical success such as the Bodyguard. I bought this CD when it first came out and I liked it then and still now. Whitney is a true vocal talent. R&B, pop, and gospel are all genres that she can perform. You go girl!

I have listened to this soundtrack over and over again. I Love the Lord, Step by Step, I Go to the Rock, Hold on, Help is on the Way. These Songs are my favorites. Step by Step helped me through a very difficult time. I love Whitney Houston and the gift that she has been blessed with. I pray that she will bless the world with more gospel music in the future.

4 out of 5 stars introducing whitney houston.......2006-08-09

i've had this album for years and i'm listening to it now writing this review. i've never watched the movie but the preacher's wife soundtrack is brilliant. whitney takes on gospel and wins--by a mile. every track in the album is good, trhey still sound great over five years later. and the good news is it only goes up from that level. every song is soulful and showcase a mature, strong whitney who has a few collaborations with the georgia mass choir and a few other artists.

it's not as famous as the bodyguard soundtrack

look out for cissy houston on the album, you can hear the resemblance.

5 out of 5 stars Go Whitney!.......2006-05-14

I agree with another online reviewer who simply says "Let The Angel Sing" and I reiterate their opinion that "I Love The Lord", sung by Miss Houston will make the hair on your arms stand up! Whitney is absolutely amazing and she should be. On this particular performance, Whitney is not just a Diva, she is in her element! Her origins go back to the choir of her youth, under the direction of none other than her own mother, Cissy Houston, the awesome soprano from the "Sweet Inspirations" and former back up singer for Arehta Franklin, the "Queen" of Soul. Whitney's gospel performance is awesome and will be a classic for years to come.

After catching heat for 2002's disappointing Masquerade, Wyclef Jean jiggered his "ecleftic" formula a bit; this time he's come closer to hitting the mark. Listeners will be pretty hard-pressed to find much actual rapping on The Preacher's Son, but the former Fugee does a good job showcasing a wide variety of musical genres, all crafted with the highest of production values. Tracks like "Baby Daddy" (an ode to step-fatherhood featuring Redman) and "Next Generation" (featuring Rah Digga and the always tight Scarface) give a brief nod to Clef's MC status while "Party to Damascus" (a duet with the ubiquitous Missy Elliott) helps bridge the gap between traditional and next-wave hip-hop. But the eclectic roster of non-MC guests proves that Wyclef's musical vision is bigger than hip-hop. Where else would you be able to hear Patti LaBelle, Carlos Santana, and Haitian kompa kings T-Vice all do their thing? --Rebecca Levine

5 out of 5 stars A breath of fresh air..........2006-04-20

Wyclef is brilliant, and with 'The Preacher's Son' Wyclef leaves no room to debate. What's great about this album is that Wyclef proves he's more than a one trick pony living in the shadow of 'The Fugees' but is a brilliant artist who is prepared to make his mark, and what a mark he makes. Opening with a jab at the industry as a whole he calls out all the artist with beef pleading with them to end it for its not worth it. Wyclef continues to sing about things that matter by picking subjects that span further than sex and weed. On tracks like 'Baby Daddy' he gives a shout out to all the RESPONSABLE men out there who will take care of their woman and their babies (even if the kid aint really theirs). 'Celebrate' featuring the talented Mrs Labell shines as a classic throwback song to the way things used to be when life was simple. 'Linda' shows the dangers of cheating while 'Next Generation' shows the importance of learning from mistakes to make a better tomorrow. 'Class Reunion' features the beautiful voice of Monica as she and Wyclef take a 'Waterfalls' type spin on the song, singing about young children with bright future's throwing it all away. There are plenty an island vibe to this album as well with slow tracks like 'I'm You're Doctor' and 'Who Gave the Order' and then faster jam songs like 'Party by the Sea' which in my opinion is just brilliant. 'Take me as I Am' is a nice ode to the woman who's always been there, and will always be there, and 'Rebel Music' is one of the best tracks here, beat, lyrics and all...I just love it. 'Party to Damascus' featuring Missy Eliott is freaking off the hook, and the remix which closes out this brilliant album is even better. Talk about made for the clubs! Anyways, Wyclef deserves all the praise he can get for this effort for he gives you great track after great track, but never falls into a mold or a nitch. Every track is unique and refreshing in itself. 'The Preacher's Son' proves to be that breath of fresh air I needed to believe that great music still exists!

If wyclef continues with such nonsense,i'll stop possessing his albums. What is he? a rapper, reggae singer or what? You are agood lyricist clef, but you need to decide what you want to do

4 out of 5 stars This album is the mature side to Wyclef.......2005-12-17

Wyclef definitely delivers on this album. Hip-hop's biggest problem these days: Underground aside, almost everything mainstream out there has a sameness to them, so many thanks to Clef for snapping the neck of monotony, and once again coming out with an inspired and different piece of work.

On his fourth album, "The Preacher's Son", his first for J Records, Clef puts the outside the box collaborations and flamboyant genre mixing on the back burner and the result is a strong and cohesive collection of quality and soulful songs. Musically, the album stays mostly in Clef's comfort zones of Hip-Hop, Calypso and Reggae. Lyrically Clef combines the folksy story telling Calypso tradition with the swagger and pop culture references of hip-hop. On "Industry", he rides and hard baseline in a style halfway between rapping and singing and turns in a heartfelt plea for peace in the hip-hop nation.

Missy Elliot stops by to add her characteristic energy and staccato flow to a jubilant island groove on "Party to Damascus". And Reggae super stars Wayne Wonder and Elephant man kick laid back reggae verses in-between Clef's melodic Calypso grooves on the chorus. Clef even ventures successfully into Latin sounds with Carlos Santana on "Three Nights in Rio", and vintage quiet storm R&B on the seductive "Baby". The album keeps a diverse but consistently fun groove through out, but the highlights come at the end when Clef gets a little more serious. "Next Generation" mixes themes of rebellion and spirituality over an intense hip-hop beat and Caribbean inspired melody. "Rebel Music" follows with a groove bouncy enough for the clubs, but dark enough to resonate as Clef sings about the plagues of urban society and the music business. And on "Who Gave the Order", Clef channels the spirit of the great Bob Marley for an anthem of defiance, righteous anger and ultimately spiritual resiliency.

While not quite the aural feast of "Carnival," The Preacher's Son is better written and conceived than Masquerade, and more cohesive than "Ecleftic". Any fan of Wyclef definitely has to get this....non-fans might seriously want to consider this album, Other than that it's a solid album.

5 out of 5 stars This Is The Best CD I Own!.......2005-02-02

Ok, you just have to buy this cd if you like wyclef... and even if you dont, you will love this cd... i listen to it first song till the last one over and over... i do have my favourites: industry, baby daddy, grateful, take me as i am. But i love them all.. the only one i kind of like a little bit less is party to damascus remix... but its still pretty good... well, i really do hope you buy it... because i surely dont regret it!

Album Description

Mountain Preacher's Child features tracks from Ralph Stanley's magnificent but often overlooked Gospel recordings of the early 1980s. The material included here--all of it available on CD for the first time--comes from three albums: I'll Wear A White Robe (1979), Snow Covered Mound (1982) and I Can Tell You The Time (1985) (the lone exception, "Looking for the Stone," appeared on the 1975 release Let Me Rest on a Peaceful Mountain featuring Keith Whitley).

Stanley's group of Clinch Mountain Boys during this period of the late `70s and early `80s was arguably his best lineup. The band on most of this collection--Charlie Sizemore (rhythm guitar, lead and harmony vocals), Junior Blankenship (lead guitar), Curly Ray Cline (fiddle), Jack Cooke (bass and harmony vocals) and Ralph Stanley (banjo, lead and harmony vocals)--remained together for over nine years, the longest Stanley ever went without a personnel change. No doubt, this longevity and stability contributed to the group's hard driving, cohesive sound, and, with Stanley in his prime, it resulted in some of the best music of his career.

4 out of 5 stars Reverent, uplifting (& occasionally cautionary) messages simply make us feel good.......2007-05-02

Playing Time - 36:06 -- At track eight on this disc, Ralph Stanley and the Clinch Mountain Boys exclaim "give me that old time religion, that's for me!" Ralph Stanley once stated he felt a little like a preacher when performing gospel music -- "You have a different feeling in the gospel. I can put more in a sacred song than I can just an ordinary song. I can feel more. I feel like I'm doing myself, and maybe other people too, more good." That is the emotional resonance and musical ministry imparted on this album, a compilation of 14 bluegrass gospel songs drawn from three of Ralph Stanley's LPs previously released by Rebel Records. The three albums are I'll Wear A White Robe (1979), Snow Covered Mound (1982), and I Can Tell You The Time (1985). There are six, five, and two songs from those records, respectively. Perhaps a few more songs from the later albums, like "Harbor of Love," would have made this compilation even sturdier. The rhythmically and vocally strong closing track of "Looking for the Stone" was taken from a 1975 album called Let Me Rest on a Peaceful Mountain.

With the exception of that last track, the mountainous band includes Ralph Stanley (banjo, vocals), Charlie Sizemore (guitar, vocals), Junior Blankenship (lead guitar), Curly Ray Cline (fiddle), and Jack Cooke (bass, vocals), a configuration that was together from 1978-86. The closing number (from 1975) has Keith Whitley and Ricky Lee instead of Sizemore and Blankenship. "Snow Covered Mound" is the only a cappella quartet with guest Chester "Pop" Marshall singing bass. There are three a cappella trios, six accompanied trios, and four duets sung together by Stanley and Sizemore. The a cappella trio does a particularly fine job on one of my favorites, the title cut from "I'll Wear A White Robe" led vocally by Stanley. Sizemore had only been with the band since late-1977, and he was filling big shoes that had been worn by singers Larry Sparks, Roy Lee Centers and Keith Whitley. Charlie, only 16 when he went to work for Ralph, felt the pressure. He had a style of his own, and his smooth vocalizing, especially from the 1979 album, lacked some of the powerful hard edge to blend equitably with Ralph`s in a duet like "Walking Up This Hill On Decoration Day" and "Oak Grove Church." Perhaps the blend was also a function of Charlie's vocal projection, the songs' keys, and/or how they were recorded. "I'm in a New World" is the type of number that could have really been imparted with more energy and enthusiasm, but it comes across with some tentativeness and uncertainty. A determined overachiever, Sizemore definitely gained confidence, grew in the role, and learned from singing with the master. He is more comfortable and soulful on numbers like "Troublesome Waters" and "The Man in the Middle" from the later 1982 and 1985 LPs. By then, Sizemore had learned to phrase better with Ralph, and the result is that the later recorded songs exude even more conviction and believability than the earlier material.

While each person can relate to some of the unpretentious songs better than others, the messages are poignant and everlasting. Lyrically, the songs encourage us to think about the meaning of the words. Melodically, the pieces are provocatively simple. Instrumentally, there is Ralph's solid driving banjo, and I always enjoy hearing Cline's rustic fiddling and Blankenship's lead guitar work (e.g. "Oak Grove Church"). Pop Marshall contributes flavorful harmonica on "The God That Never Fails," written by David Marshall. Conceptually, "Mountain Preacher's Child" has competent, joyful music that is strong and durable.

Mountain Preacher's Child reinforces the status of Dr. Ralph Stanley as a legend. I certainly appreciate the band's emphasis on powerful yet plaintive singing in fairly complicated vocal arrangements. But, perhaps even more than that, their reverent, uplifting (and occasionally cautionary) messages simply make us feel good. (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now)

5 out of 5 stars This album is way better than those other reviews say.......2003-10-07

IF YOU LIKE CANNONBALL THEN YOULL LIKE THIS DISC. SIMPLE. THE TIME, THE PLACE, THE CROWD, THE PREACHIN, THATS JUST AS MUCH A PART OF THE MUSIC AS THE INSTRUMENTS. CANNONBALL DOESNT SEPARATE MUSIC FROM THE PEOPLE AND FROM CULTURE. MUSIC USED TO BE ABOUT COMMUNITY AND CULTURE. I THINK ONE OF THE NICE PARTS OF THIS DISC IS THE FEELING YOU GET OF THE EXPERIENCE. THE MUSIC ON ITS OWN IS GREAT TOO. CANNONBALL IS SOUL AND IF YOU WANT SOME, CHECK THIS.

3 out of 5 stars Not bad as a slice of history.......2003-05-28

This CD is quite interesting largely for historical reasons. The (very) young Jesse Jackson used to host Saturday morning events in Chicago that were filled with music, his oratory, special guests and civil rights discussions. Cannonball Adderly played at one such event in 1969 and that's what this CD captures.

Things begin with some uplifting early Jesse preaching and we get into some soulful jazz with the Adderly crew. This version of "Walk Tall" is a bit faster than the version most jazz fans are familiar with, but it fits the mood of people in the ghettoes getting together to make meaningful change. Joe's moody "Country Preacher" touches the spirits of the crowd, who responds with enthusiasm. "Humming" and "Oh Babe" (where the Adderly crew do a takeoff on a Flip Wilson Comedy routine that may escape modern listeners) are just ok.

After this, the band gets off into some avant-garde stuff that has it's moments, but would only appeal to hardcore fans of this genre, unlike Adderly's more popular and accessible soulful style of jazz. I agree that for the CD, this should have been placed on seperate tracks.

Overall, it's a good time capsule of an interesting time in American history, and the first half of it (at least) is very entertaining). BTW-This original LP had a first cousin in the form of a gospel/soul/jazz album from 1968 called "The Last Request" by Ben Branch and the Breadbasket Orchestra and Choir (who also performed at the young Jesse Jackson's early rallies). Now THAT really needs to be on CD too!

3 out of 5 stars Soul Power.......2001-10-30

Essentially, this is the Cannonball Adderley Quintet as the house band for a Jesse Jackson revival meeting in Fall 1969. The Reverend Jesse begins the program exhorting the congregation to 'Walk Tall,' and the band launches into a set of its brand of soul-jazz dominated by Joe Zawinul's riffing on electric piano. Cannon does some preaching of his own now and then, and the audience shouts approval with every applause line and musical cue.

If it bothers you to hear the audience intrude into the music on a recording, consider yourself warned. Still, the music on the first side is full of spirit and a lot of fun. The second side is dominated by a four-part "Afro-Spanish Omelette" that is supposed to represent the breadth of Black Music or something, but really it's just an individual showcase for each member of the band (except the drummer). The pieces don't hang together very well as a thematic suite, and someplace around where the trumpet feature meets the bass solo, some of the momentum from the first half of the show gets lost.

Tying together gospel-soul music, Sketches of Spain, and the '60s avant-garde is just a bit beyond the powers of this band. But it's OK. If you are looking for some more advanced, adventurous jazz content, try some of Cannonball's earlier work (like from '58-63). However, as an expression of instrumental soul music in the spirit of Ray Charles, this is hard to beat.

4 out of 5 stars a good solid disc.......2000-01-10

i highly dug this disc and the music on it.i liked it as a kid and still do to this day.i've often liked many of cannon balls discs.this one has alot of groove and speech.

3 out of 5 stars A couple good tracks but too much preachin'!!.......1999-04-04

I believe this cd only has a few tracks where the quintet is just playing in a groove. There is a lot of preaching between tracks that is unwanted. I bought this cd because it was "live" and I expected the producer to leave it "uncut". Instead, it is very short for a "live" disc and probably only represents a small percentage of the entire show. This cd would be great if the tracks were a little longer and the bs preaching was eliminated.

Fun. There's no better way to describe guitarist Joe Louis Walker's Preacher and the President, rife as it is with chunky riffs, killer solos, and a groove smooth enough to skate on. Topping things off is a healthy dose of attitude, leavening solid material and tight arrangements with warmth and humor. Walker's backing band is as on target as anyone could wish; just check out that bass line and those horn punches on "Lyin' in the Name of Love," or the driving drumbeat on "Yveline." Walker can lay back, too; there's a real tenderness on "Pride of a Fool" that's enough to reaffirm anyone's waning faith in love songs. It just doesn't get any better than this. --Genevieve Williams

    3 out of 5 stars Album= 3 stars, Artist= 4 stars.......1999-05-16

Joe is an excellent guitarist and a capable singer. The quality of his singing is uneven. He has a decent voice, but he doesn't always pick songs that "fit" his voice. He does an excellent job of singing in "Pride of a Fool". But I frequently find his voice irritating. Very nice guitar soloing on "I'm Not Messin' Around". But the 2 songs I mentioned are the only ones I liked. --You might like the album "The Story of My Life" by Guitar Slim, Jr. -- You might think that with songs like, "Preacher and the President", "I'm Not Fooling Around", "Lyin' in the Name of Love", "Pride of a Fool", "Uhh!", "Tell the Truth", and "My Real Fantasy" that the whole album is about Bill Clinton. No, you don't see anything directed specifically at Bill ("I never!") Clinton.

4 out of 5 stars A Great Blues Artist for a New Generation.......1998-09-22

I first saw Joe Louis Walker in concert when he opened for Huey Lewis and the News in 1991. I was blown away by this man and his band (then called the Boss Talkers). Through the years Walker has changed to a bigger lable, but his music and sound is still top-shelf. His arrangements and song writing is getting better and better. On his latest release, JLW has no less than three excellent songs. My favorites are Preacher and the President and The Pride of a Fool. If you have never purchased a JLW disc, the best news is they are all great! I recommend Live at Sim's Vol 1 & 2, plus his early The Gift. From the later years I like House of the Blues and Great Guitars. Go JLW!

4 out of 5 stars a great piano based power pop record.......2004-10-22

I really only checked out Mark Mallman for two reasons: He's on Badman records and the record store guy I trust seemed to really like the record. I only heard the first two tracks at the store and they convinced me to check the record out with no real prior knowledge. I was pleasantly surprised to see that Mallman was able to keep his songcraft up to par with the only songs I had heard. "Hardcore Romantics" is the first single off the record, and rightfully so, but the record is full of songs that have single material written all over them. His melodies are edgy, yet fun and his voice seems to fit the music perfectly at almost all times. Mallman's strong suit is definitely the rockers. This isn't to say that the ballads are bad, quite the contrary most of them are great, but at times it seems that Mallman's vocal style does not always fit with the more laid back structure of the songs. It seems that Mallman is making an attempt to bring retro-arena rock to the world of indie rock and to be honest, I really hope he succeeds.
