Nice sound -- give it a listen!.......2007-03-04

Not all children of celebrities have the talent of their famous parents. But Deana Martin sounds as good -- in her own way, of course -- as her father. This album is a collection of songs from the 40s and 50s (at least mostly -- I don't recognize a few of them), the era when her father was making a name for himself as a singer, and includes many songs that were Dean Martin's hits, as well as some songs that are better known by other artists (like Judy Garland's "Trolley Song" and Rosemary Clooney's "Mambo Italiano"). And she does a good job on most of them. (There are a couple of false notes in some places, but not enough to hurt the overall rating.)

In general, she does not imitate her father's style, a good thing because the female voice sounds so different from the male. (An exception is "That's Amore," where it does sound as though she made a conscious attempt to sound like Dean Martin.) She comes closer to the originals on the Garland and Clooney covers mentioned earlier in this review. In the main, when she does a Dean Martin hit, she sounds less laid-back and more jazzy, and it works for her.

I think she's about as good a singer as her father was. Neither is one of my very top favorites, but both have (had) decent voices and are certainly worth listening to.

I'm in the business and very rarely actually listen to the CDs I receive. This one has been in my car cd player since I received it! It's a great new perspective on timeless music and a legendary voice. You can feel the pride of a daughter with every note she sings. Its like the kindergartener proudly pointing out "her daddy," Deana sings her father's songs with love, honor and respect. You're a Dean fan before you play her CD, but by the third song, you've unwittingly become a Deana fan. Do your cd player a favor, let the smoothness of Deana's voice set the tone for all the other music you may play on it. Memories are truly made of Deana Martin's new cd.

Deana has a pleasant voice but nothing spectacular about it. It is just a
soft voice and not memorable that you just can't get enough of her. I did enjoy hearing Jerry Lewis although he wasn't fantastic he was very acceptable and brought back a lot of good "Memories"

It was so special listening to this CD...I have been a Dean Martin fan for many years...To hear his daughter sing his classics as well as songs from Frank and Sammy, as well as her mother...This was a special CD...And most of all the duet with Deana and Jerry Lewis was precious...what an ultimate tribute, by his daughter and partner...Deana has a wonderful voice and I was pleasantly surprised...This was definitely a class act CD...Kudos for Deana for recording these timeless treasures...Thank you...Amy Leddy, State College, PA

I love this cd, I listened it when I was a child, and I was very impressed with this collection of great songs, don't forget that this album was a gold record; beggining with the title song MEMORIES ARE MADE OF THIS, the beautiful TAMMY, the great THREE COINS IN THE FOUNTAIN, the lovely NO OTHER LOVE, the Elvis's hit LOVE ME TENDER, the Platters' ONLY YOU (what a wonderful threatment of the song) and ending with great surprises like YOUNG LOVE and AROUND THE WORLD... SIMPLY RAY CONNIFF!!

"memories are made of this" rightfully deserves its reputation as one of conniff's most exquisitely arranged recordings. the selections are mini masterpieces, and the members of this ensemble are some of the top-notch studio musicians of their day. in addition to billy butterfield's rich and sassy trumpet, we hear a young doc severinsen's bright stratospheric horn. the songs for this recording truly do bring back memories of the 50's, but conniff translates them into way-better-than-the-original renditions.

this recording is a MUST for anyone who loves the conniff sound. one of his very finest.

I love all Ray Conniff music ;particularly the earlier songs that were using the voices as instruments with no actual words. this album like many others released in the sixties contain a rich and wonderful sound that to me is a great alternative to well known tracks presented in a different way that you never seem to tire of.I loved his style when i was in my teens and i still have not tired of it at 55 years of age. This is one of the most memorable of Conniff's early albums, in that it provided exquisite, traditional Conniff treatments of some of the most popular songs of the middle and late fifties. For anyone who appreciates truly good music, this CD, and its immediate predecessor "Somebody Loves Me," will fill your head with some incredibly full and rich sounds.

If there is one artist that captures the great sound of music it's the late Ray Conniff! His orchestra and chorus put out some fabulous albums in the 50's to the re-release C.D.'s of today. The C.D. version of Ray's albums are great to listen to. No skips and pops like you would hear on an album. Anyway "Memories Are Made of This" is wonderful listening. I like to pop on this C.D. and the others he made when I busy writing e-mail. "Only You" is my favorite on this entire C.D.! Enjoy!

Arguably "The Best" English "Merry Widow ".......2006-09-12

This is the "Merry Widow" with English translation by Christopher Hassel sung by June Bronhill. I loved this rendition ever since I first heard it in about 1960. What's to love? First the translation is the best I've heard. The language doesn't sound "stilted" as some others. And, you can understand almost every word sung. Plus, the famous song, "Vilja" has some wording that moves me every time I hear it: The soprano sings, "Love me and I'll DIE for you!" with the word "die" somewhat emphasized. I don't know, there's just something "powerful" about someone saying they'd "die" for love! AND, at the end of "Vilja" the chorus and soprano raise to a crescendo hitting a high note together. In many renditions the chorus is heard but not the soprano on the final high note. In THIS version, the soprano, June Bronhill, can be heard rising to the final high note with an incressing crescendo and fortissimo louder than the chorus and holding the final high note---which gives a very thrilling effect as she holds that final note, I assure you!

The "problem" is that this June Bronhill, Reid, and Hassel version is hard to find on CD. For example, this CD is made in Holland and "there is one left" so it says on Amazon. But, if you can find it, I think it would be very much worth a listen. Then, after hearing it, if you think there's a "better" Merry Widow, please let ME know! Thanks. Email:boland7214@aol.

I love this Box set! All my favorite Dino songs plus all of his songs from the Martin & Lewis movies...the awesome rendition of thats Amore, with Jerry Lewis I LOVE THAT VERSION!!!

The novelty records with Jerry Lewis highlight this awesome collection of Dean Martin's early recordings, If you ever get a chance, buy this set, you will not be disappointed, All the songs he sang in the movies with Jerry Lewis are here, plus most of the studio cuts of the same songs...

I thought a lot about buying this because of the price, but now that I have it in my hot little hands, I wish I would have bought it sooner. I love it -- I have now put the other box sets on my "list"!

Dean is truly my all time favorite singer and I adore his older recordings. You can't find a better collection.

This is the best Dean Martin collection money can buy! When I first listened to it some of the songs were not so great, but the more I listen the more I like every single song. Just remember to turn the radio down when Jerry sings, if you don't you could hurt your ears! lol

The Complete Dino 1946-55.......1999-12-04

"Memories Are Made of This" is a beautifully packaged 8-CD set that provides a detailed overview of Dean Martin's early recordings. Admittedly, not all the songs are gems, but the obscure singles from the late 1940s reveal a self-assured vocalist whose style was truly his own. In retrospect, Dino was a more versatile singer than Frank Sinatra -- he could perform Italian love songs, country, jazz, blues and pop standards. When listening to Martin's version of "I Don't Care If the Sun Don't Shine," you can hear some of the vocal stylings that Elvis Presley would utilize in his remake at Sun Records. The duets with Peggy Lee and Nat King Cole are priceless, but the same cannot be said for the irritating novelty recordings with Jerry Lewis. Apart from the title track, perhaps the best song in the collection is Dino's stirring interpretation of "Come Back to Sorrento." If you're a Martin fan with only a few of his CDs, you will save a lot of money if you purchase this box set. The Bear Family has done a masterful job in restoring Dean Martin to his proper place in the history of popular music.

Highly recommended. Audio quality is great (with obvious allowances for some tracks given the source material). Also includes the old movie songs.

A search for Deep Purple's "Smoke on [in] the water," brought up this title. I rate it only #1 because I could not locate the "Smoke on the Water" listing. Amazon seems to be having an indexing problem.

From his early Nashville rooted days ('I Can't Stop Loving You', 'Carolina Moon') to his later easy listening hits such as 'Moon River' and 'Danny Boy'. The first CD contains studio tracks while the second features eleven live tracks taken from various stages in his career. RCA. 2005.

Following the success of Gentleman Jim (a double CD containing all of Jim's big UK hits and many other classics), his British record company released this compilation. The first CD contains Jim's covers of songs made famous by others while the second CD is an edited version of his live album, On stage.

The covers show that, while Jim's roots were in country music, he recorded songs from a diverse range of sources. There are some country songs here, of course, including I fall to pieces (Patsy Cline), From a Jack to a king (Ned Killer) and Waiting for a train (Jimmie Rodgers). I can't stop loving you began as a Don Gibson country song though it is better known via the R+B cover by Ray Charles. Similarly, Fool such as I started as a Hank Snow country song but Elvis Presley made it into an international pop hit.

Goodnight Irene became an American top ten hit in 1950 for Jo Stafford, Frank Sinatra and the country super-duo of Ernest Tubb and Red Foley, but the Weavers and Gordon Jenkins had the biggest hit, spending three months at number one and selling over two million copies. Another song popular in 1950 was Mona Lisa, which also charted in America for several singers but Nat King Cole's version was the most popular.

Several songs here pre-date 1950 including Danny boy, Take my hand precious Lord, It is no secret, Have I told you lately that I love you, Moonlight and roses, Someday you'll want me to want you, over and It's only a paper moon. The continuing popularity of these songs is proof of their quality. Carolina moon also pre-dates 1950 (it dates from 1929) but will be forever associated with Connie Francis, who revived the song almost thirty years later.

Moon River became Andy Williams' theme song though it was never a hit for him. In the UK, the song was a number one hit for the unrelated Danny Williams. Memories are made of this (Dean Martin) and Roses are red (Bobby Vinton) are other covers of songs that were fairly new at the time Jim recorded them.

This is a fascinating and entertaining collection. If you already have a collection of Jim's hits (perhaps the double-CD I mentioned earlier) and want more of his music, you will surely enjoy this. If you haven't got such a collection, I recommend youstart with one of those before worrying about this.

The bonus cd is the concert that was released on LP in 1968,here it is edited so there is little talking between songs.I gave it 4 stars out of 5,because the concert cd is edited.Main cd contains an unusal choice of songs,not the one you get on other cd`s.Buy it from the Amazon Uk division,it will be much cheaper that way.
